The funniest thing to me is when Chase is like ; Lets try and see if we can write this down on this whiteboard for you, and then, The sun is getting in the way, this doesnt work, I guess I have to figure this out later, who cares, anyways, and then just continues and goes straight into the video.
This is so great and fascinating to me, because my fucking Se inferior would 100 % stop and do like 5 re-shoots of this shit until its basically "perfect" . At this moment I was thinking to myself, I like this guy. I just love that he just dont care about the visuals and estethics of these videos. Because the focus is 100 % on the Content in these videos, which actually makes me trust him 100% more,. I think this is One of the best moments in this entire UA-cam channel in my opinion 😆😆

As an INTJ, I think it's not always just a need for credentials per say. Status does motivate us to speak and impress with our knowledge. Also, in terms of trusting those with credentials more, I think that is mostly true but I would also say its significantly has to do with whether the source is trustworthy or has proved itself. For example you, you have no credentials but I trust you because you made complete sense in your first video so I stuck with you. You have the status of a trustworthy source I suppose.

    • @savvageorge

The reason why C.S sounds trustworthy is probably because he's extroverted and good at public speaking. When it comes to introverts our ideas are normally blown out of the water by Te personality types. Even introverts with credentials struggle to have their ideas taken seriously. Einstein was a good example of this, he worked for nearly 10 years in a patent office because nobody took him seriously as a scientist.

Te is such an awesome cognitive function to have in the dominant regions of the ego. I have mine in the inferior position which sometimes sucks only because for some reason I feel like if i'm in a room with people with more credentials than me I feel really lame and shy but in conversations where I have more knowledge I can be an awesome teacher/ debater almost to the point of being a little arrogant. I'm pretty sure these are lower functioning aspects of this function, but Te also is a great systemizer. It's the part of me (and maybe other INFP types) that drives my hunger for knowledge and sometimes status, motivates me to study my butt off, and RATIONALLY organize my millions of Fi feelings and Ne possibilities.

  • @SJaye-zv9er

INTJ here. I love reading these comments. I'm noticing things I hadn't noticed before.
Like that I want people to think I'm smart, so if there's someone else in the conversation who has evidence of knowledge (e.g. a degree or work experience) of whatever we're talking about, I keep my mouth shut even if I have something to say. I hate to be embarrassed or look stupid.
There's a type out there that makes me feel like a child just by being there. I feel timid, unimportant and kind of blank as if I were in the background instead of right there in the conversation. Sometimes I even forget that I have a point of view. It's always a man, never a woman. I hate it.
Is it likely for that type to be ENTJ?
I love ENTPs. You're interesting and I feel safe talking to you. I forget myself, which is amazing and wonderful. Thanks for that.

As an INTJ, for me Te is more about empirical evidence and the statistical probability that something is true. I don’t ignore someone without credentials. But I do think it’s ignorant to discredit something purely on the basis that you don’t understand it. For example, I was trying to describe Jungian Typology to a coworker ENTP and within a few minutes he made up his mind that it was false. I’d never (or at least I try not to) make up my mind before examining the validity of the claim. I might explain my initial thoughts or theories for the fun of it, but I wouldn’t put any weight on my claims till I gathered more information. I think that’s more intellectually humbling, to realize that your initial thoughts could be wrong, and that you never start off magically knowing a topic. It also sorta annoys me when people bring up influential people in the past who thought outside the box in relation to their thoughts being valid. The fact that we know their names, and not the names of the vast majority who discovered information through building on an already set concept, shows that trailblazers are statistically less common. Also, the person themselves are more likely to have a false theory than be discovering something new. And if a whole bunch of people believe something, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true, it just means it’s statistically more likely to be true than some conspiracy theory. Ti can be right, and it’s brilliant when it is. But it’s like winning the lottery.

I mean we don't have these functions, two people must disscuss it (INTJ and INTP/ ENTJ and ENTP / INFJ and INFP, etc). As INTP I always looked up for sources, INTJ professor made me inconfident when asked on what bases I made my assumptions, first I realised study books are very forgetful because the authors avoid complicated tasks for general audience, then I decided to rise up the confidence by learning information straight from pubmed, so my answer will be "Well I've read couple of articles on this subject recently, don't remember the authors but it was about this and that the title was this, you can check it out".

That's a really good point man. A close friend of mine has inferior Te. I'm starting to realize now just how him and I create a log jam in a lot of conversations now. I will present a piece of information toward him, and his judgement of that information is so much more subjective than I had originally thought when I first knew him. Just like that ENTP you mentioned. It's not logic that is first met with his understanding of the information, it's how he feels about it. I've started to recognize how I wont even finish speaking, and he will already express a judgement about something with a certain tonality in his voice. Like I can already see he has worked it out as factual or truth even when I havent reached the conclusion of that information. Does that make sense? It's starting to wear on our relationship, as I cant fully express and idea, concept, piece of knowledge, without him grabbing 30% of the information, and just disregarding it all. He's a wonderful friend in many ways, but yeah... Leaves for a pretty shallow relationship

I'm an INFP and I actually wondered how did you learn everything you know. I started watching your videos after seeing many people commenting in the MBTI community that you knew what you were talking about (Yeah, external opinions. Hello, Te). I'm an INFP and I swear, confirmation bias is a BIG ISSUE for me, and I think this is the most aware I've been of it thanks to your videos, not because you've told me so (which would be a humilliating irony, XD) but because you've encouraged me to check my own thinking. A good example of my poor Ti is that when I got ENFJ the first time I took an MBTI test, I completely believed it and it "totally made sense for me". Then, when I got INFJ (it TOTALLY made sense for me again, lol), I believed it for a year and didn't bother to do my own research. I legit thought I was an INFJ based on standard behavioral trends and confirmation-biased myself through memes, Instagram posts of dubious origin and most upvoted quora and personality cafe comments (I'm not proud of that but my only interest in MBTI back then was finding info I could relate to and give myself a pat on the back from time to time). I'd go like "well, I'm very empathetic and I don't think I'm selfish and I have door slammed people many times so I must be an INFJ". But then I'd start to doubt my type again when I didn't fit with the stereotype. For example, I always end up listening to people's problems like an INFJ would, but I... don't? always? want? to???? And many times I find myself silently questioning how did I end up talking about the childhood traumas or the deep desires of x person, while still listening to them. When this happened I'd tell myself that if I was a true INFJ I'd thrive on listening others. That I'd feel kind of self-realized and not drained. In fact, I secretly tend to feel intolerant towards others' lack of self resolution, and I can definetely feel irritated if someone dismisses my POV or advice and still complains about their problems (but I rarely smack others about it {unless it becomes unbearable, or I'm in a bad mood} because it makes me feel really uncomfortable and I fear I can come across as harsh, Te inferior). Learning about the functions has been the only way for me to make sure which are the ones I use the most. I don't relate to INFPs who complain about your videos. I personally love your content and your authentic, no bullshit, laid back attitude makes everything more dynamic. Your examples are also pretty cool and I'd really appreciate you used more. You're super passionate about this topic and it shows, keep up the good work!

I can completely understand and in some way metnally adopt a system even when I don’t believe in it. Believing something is true is not a requirement for me to be willing and able to understand and be interested in a system. Take for example astrology. I don’t necessarily believe in it but I found it fascinating to study it and understand its thinking and the perspective it offers. The same goes for various religions. I can throw up and associate and half believe in a theoretical way many divergent systems at the same time, which allows a creativity and flexibility in thinking that many - much more accurate and truth driven - Ti users can’t achieve. This allows me also to ve able to help others with very divergent belief systems understand each other and to mediate between them as well.

All humans are thought vampires to a certain extent. Its the ability to make true/false judgements regarding thoughts which separates Te and Ti. If CS Joseph was fat, had poor hygiene and spoke like he was from Alabama would you still take him seriously? This is the difference between Ti and Te. We are able to extract truth from experts and unreliable sources that society shuns because our truth is generated internally from our own personal true/false judgments.

@@savvageorge Not really. That last part is more associated towards Ti going down deep rabbit holes. Ti is more likely to look at sources that consensus would view as unreliable because Ti cares less about certification experts and more about what they think about it not what others think. Ti doesn't care about consensus because it's about personal understanding and individual thinking which means it will consider many things including data that is outside the realm of what the collective deems relevant. Consensus Te has it's place in society (in fact consensus Te rules collective society for good reason) but it's difficult for Te to wrap around their heads and take in ideas that don't conform to the majority especially if those ideas aren't proven or the sources aren't certified (peer reviewed etc).
Te really exists to challenge individual Ti users. If Ti users data and subsequent ideas proven through the information they provide are good enough to challenge the status quo and consensus to the point Te recognizes it, it then becomes a part of consensus where the collective collects it and zeitgeist knowledge grows.

As an example, when I interview people for a job interview, I read their credentials out of courtesy, but that's not what I am looking for. The best clerical person I have ever had was a junior college drop out (because of a pregnancy). In the interview, with an intent look on her face, she said, "if I don't know how to do something, I will find out how to do it, then from that point I'll know." I hired her, and she was par excellance.

    • @CSJoseph
      @CSJoseph  6 років тому +21

Mark Odekirk , awesome, I do not disagree with you. However, the vast majority of Te users, especially Te child and Te inferior are very focused on the “status” that such credentials bring them. Furthermore, I have experienced it plenty with Te parents and a few times with ESTJs. ENTJs however are different. They don’t care about credentials that much which is why ENTPs like myself jive with them so well. So for an ESTJ, traditionally speaking, prefers an “expert” and will not take the risk on non-credentialed people. ISTJs draw a lot of pride out of the letters that are passed their name and they take it very seriously. INTJs its a mix, depends on how mature they are etc. Anyway, I don’t disagree with your anecdotal evidence, but when looking at all Te users compared to Ti users, there is a definite bias towards people who have credentials vs those who do not (yet have proven track records to be more effective than those with letters after their name) The younger the Te user, the more they value credentials.

Same! I am an ISFP, but as soon as someone starts to bring up any kind of credentials, red flags go off in my mind. I am more about the strategies and experiences someone brings to the table. I'm especially skeptical with religion- as soon as someone even says they are "such and such", I take everything with a grain of salt. I'd rather see their actions and decide for myself. However, I have been burned with religion and marketing schemes in the past, because I did go along with it and found out the hard way all the lies that exist there. So perhaps as an ISFP with inferior Te, because of those negative experiences, it might be a Ti demon response? I don't know, I'm just starting to figure all this out.

In this video at least, you don't understand Te at all. You go on to apply Si/Te and Te/Si behavior to intuitives, which is a grievous error. Because it's those function stacks that cause someone to cite facts, and sources, and undervalue original thought (in their defense, they just want to know you are an expert, and compare your opinions to other experts, before deciding to listen to you). But if you think that NTs like XNTJ are only about citing the known facts, and not having original thoughts, you don't know what you are talking about. Sorry. Tesla and Elon Musk might beg to differ, as will any XNTJ who is busy bringing their creative ideas into fruition in the real world. In reality, all 4 NTs are abstract thinkers, though the XNTJs tend to be more practical.
Te isn't at all what you said it was. Te is about testing our thoughts external to us, rather than internal. Te will test ideas in the real world, with real people, and real objects. Ideas will be refined via discourse. Theories will be tested. Plans will be implemented. Te is practical. Ti users might see this as "speaking before you are certain about a topic". Which is true. That's exactly what Te does. 2 heads is better than one, so the sooner you air your ideas, the faster you will find out about their flaws. Says a Te user, anyway. Te doesn't mind making mistakes (even if Ni does), because those mistakes can be corrected as you go.
Ti is a little different, as you will tend to polish your thoughts internally before revealing them. A Te user might see this as a waste of time. Ti is mostly theoretical, caring less about application than understanding. "Have a good idea what might be the truth, before you speak to others about it", says Ti user. Ti seeks understanding for understanding's sake. And airing ideas before they are fully formed might be seen by Ti as "Misleading others".
I understand this is one of your earlier videos, and that you don't actually understand Te that well as an ENTP. So I'm not trying to discourage you here. But your understanding of Te is misinformed in this video. Looking at the comments, it's clear you've been educated about 1000x over, so I'm sure you have a better understanding now. I caught one of your season 13 videos which was excellent, so let's not obsess about the past.
However, If you want to understand why people are quite disturbed by the video, imagine yourself if ENTP was described as ESTP. As if the two were identical. "You like sensory experiences, you ENTPs, but you're not big on deeper thinking, preferring only to bully people into agreement. You know, that's ENTPs, right? Not much about original thought, just about senseless debate for the sake of ego". This should help to illustrate why people object to you conflating XNTJs and XSTJs. I'm going to shut up now, because I know that ENTPs can be quite wounded by their past mistakes.

We all have all both Ti and Te. You need to go watch his other videos in which he describes how each function behaves in each function stack. The xNTJ thing you said, if you're one, just look back when you were immature and you can see that you only collected fact and never thought about them because you saw a UA-cam video or read it on some site. Then when you actually started using Ti critic or nemesis and Fi is when you became more mature and thought critically. I started using these when people would point out that I didn't know what I was talking about and was just spiting out facts to impress them.

My moto is, "All my best ideas are other peoples'." That's why I'm quick to give credit to someone else when I steal an excellent idea. I know I'm terrible with a blank page. My close group of friends have played table-top RPGs for 30 years. I usually run the game. When I come up with a cool idea for a game, it's always something from another source that inspires me, and then I grab 5 or 6 concepts from other sources and piece them together to "make it my own". Usually, I start with a general concept that I want to create a scenario for. It's kind of like having a very general idea for a story arc, but without any details or actual plot points. Then I find a set of major plot points across multiple media that I can use to craft the arc I wanted to create. Then I tweak the details and fill in any cracks to make it more "unique" and cohesive. For me, the creative aspect is finding the pieces that accomplish the goal, not creating something from nothing. I'm an INTJ.

    • @qua7771
      @qua7771 5 років тому +2

IDK. That is debatable. What is original thought? If you come up with a new invention it's still going to be made of existing earth elements that you didn't create. The processes of melting gold with mercury for example. It depends on how you look at it.
I assume the INTJ would see a complex web of everything being connected somehow. Others may see your game idea as being a brand new concept because it wouldn't have occurred without your input. A matter of perspective IMO. It took creativity for your game to evolve, otherwise you would just be shooting dice. If ideas came from other people then where did they get theirs?

Amazing video @CS Joseph, as an ENTJ this is really illuminating for me and incredibly applicable. My question is in your experience with those who have high Te do you find that their "credential requirements" vary? For example, you not having a degree in psychology is not a turn off for me because I see the work that you've put in, the information that you've provided, and the credibility that you've built up on your channel. You don't have to be a part of Myers Briggs, for me to consider you credible. It's the same in business for me, someone having a degree isn't a turnoff if they can show me documentation that their business is flourishing and they know their stuff, it's more of a production/results oriented credential for me rather than having a title. Some of the best mentors I've ever had were high school/college dropouts but had real world experience and resiliency to keep learning and growing.

I run my own practice as a philosophical counsellor. I find I don't care for elected authority or really authority in general. But people who just move up in companies with no other reason but being given the job never registers as status to me. I see quite a few people disagreeing with your viewpoint of Te, but I think you have a point. I disagree in the sense that Te itself is simply one cognitive function, and a personality constitutes of a precarious balance between multiple. It would have been better if you mentioned that this is what Te does, not extraverted thinkers (as they refer to actual people, and people are multidimensional, not just Te) but I agree in you saying Te has no thoughts of their own, as they function on 'extra' and rationale. Especially as an ENTJ, it's really easy to get lost in trying to make sense of the world around me and what is there. That is the reason I think Fi is so important for ENTJs to function. I find that amidst the whirlwind of information and opinions of the modern era, the only thing that actually enables me to come up with thoughts, ideas and solutions of my own is Fi. As hard as it was to develop my Fi, it gave me a sense of moral compass, a broader sense of empathy and depth in identity, not superficiality.

And I did write this prior to finishing the whole video, and the more I see it, the more I think you've had bad experience with unhealthy extraverted thinkers haha. Those are just the manifestation of overworked Te + possibly repressed Fi, not extraverted thinkers in general. Any function has the potential of toxicity, just in different forms. Te does tend to be a bit obnoxious in the manifestation, hope you don't think too badly of it lmao

Hey, Chase! I know you don't mention that question that much in the video, but I wanted to talk about Te inferior. I've it as inferior function and what I think is that there's something lacking in your explanation, and it's how much we distrust it (as well we desire it). I mean, we use it too, but at the same time, we oppose it with our Fi, so basically, at least how it works for me, is more or less like this: Oh, this is what people think! What do I feel about it? Do I agree or not? If I agree there's no problem, but if I don't... well, that will provoke a HUGE conflict. Because a part of me trust it and wants to do it as well (for example, in my personal case it's above all: academic field and relationships, for example) but the other part is like: NOOOOO! You don't have to trust what society tells you to do! It's wrong! People don't consider your OWN needs or feelings! You don't have to do it if you think it's not the right thing!
Another case of distrusting it is for example when I meet new people. I'm super anxious about what they will think about me and trying to be as polite and "normal" as I can (I've suffered bullying as a child, so having Te as inferior and Fe as nemesis, well... you can imagine what happens... xDDD) but a part of me wants to be true to "what I am" as well... So it's actually a hard time for me to meet new people, above all group of people because I distrust them (that's probably my personal experience, as well).
So yeah, I would say that a part of us really wants these credentials or approval but it's always in conflict with our Fi who tells us to stay true to what we feel. Until you mature and you try to balance your Fi and increase and accept your Te (I think is a huge deal for us to accept the Te because it means admiting that we actually want some of the things we constantly critisise).
I hope that was helpful and not too out of place!
And thank you again for your videos! :)

Very interesting. I'm an INTJ, and it took me a while to understand this explanation. I'm a guy who has earned a lot of success in life in spite of the fact that I'm mostly self-educated. My highest degree is an Associate's Degree. So, I don't put much stock in titles/degrees/credentials in others, nor do I look down on those who lack those things.
Having said all that, I realize that my personal status is very tied to how people see me and my integrity. I also realize that I tend to pull out the old "I'm an industry expert with 20 years of experience", as well as the fact that I used to give talks for an industry group. So, you're absolutely correct that it's important for my own self-worth.

I nearly quit my current job, because I had a couple of people tear down my integrity behind my back. I just like to have proof that it is correct. If there's proof then people can't say something is false. I do like to take in other peoples ideas and what they believe to be true and see if it actually lines up with reality. I think Ti is more of something being true without any proof of it being true. It's like having an idea in theory ,but never putting it to the test. I think Te users need it to be tested out to see if it really is true within reality.

I don't really think I'm te or ti heavy. But as an Enfp, I find it weird that I haven't found my te really. Like, I love watching informative videos and I hate when people just say that something isn't true and they're right because they studied it. My sister who had zoology 1 year said that octopi weren't smart, she also wouldn't argue about it she said she studied it so it's true (i think she's either estj or entj).A lot of my functions are quite underdeveloped it seems. But the thinking functions most of all. I also find conversations about stuff that isn't opinion quite boring mostly, cause it's just a look it up thing or never know for sure.

A lot of extraverted thinkers value the opposite of credentials just due to our current times. So, as they want to feel special and have merit, they pride themselves on not having a degree; therefore, learning everything they know by themselves and standing out in the process due to having a degree being the norm, and so, they become the exception.

To assume that credentials are important to Te users is assuming that they are all logically fallacious by definition. Some of us understand that an argument from authority is a fallacy and are unwilling to operate from it. I think you've had some valid points, but I do not always take my opinions from people with credentials. We can, however, appreciate credentials and tend to pursue them because of the way we are perceived by "what works" in the world. Credentials do carry weight amongst a lot of different people, and if having credentials gives us one more step in the right direction, we'll take it.

Bullshit. To add to the other corrections in this thread... Te links with Fi which judges the value of stuff. Ti wanders down paths which have no value and makes logical connections that may be factually flawed and therefore reaching an incorrect conclusion. We Ti folks need the Te folks to gather accurate data for us to work with and correct our foundationally flawed logic so we achieve wisedom where our logic is cemented in reality.

So "Te is based on believes and opinions of others" - good point. Probably that's why I keep arguing with INTJs and they drive me mad - as their Te pairs with Fi - which means their believes are based on ego, and opinions of people with high social status ( high status in the domain of "being authority" or "being publicly perceived as wise" - not exactly in the way of economic, or power status).
It means INTJ will never ever challenge the ideas of "famous and respected philosopher" , because they have no apparatus to think by they own about the reality. They can think about their own experiences, though, they can logically process knowledge and opinions of others, but they cannot connect the dots into logically consistent big picture. There is other thing which they can do on their own - they try to dig deeply into other people psyche and they judge their morals and intentions (usually in very biased way).
But that's not what drives me mad.
What drives me mad is when they indirectly emphasize their superiority - by comparing themselves with "those stupid and irrational people". And instead of focusing on the matter of the topic, they try to morally undermine the position of person with whom they disagree.
I probably should also say something nice about INTJ to not become an asshole, but well...

On the other hand, when we're debating whether a movie is good or not (or any emotional/value concept) I'll say something like "I liked this movie/value/idea. It's good."
And he'll say "People don't like the movie/value/idea, hence it's not good. It got 10% on rotten tomato" and sometimes he'll tell me some weird social controversies (which I seldom care about).
And in those cases, I get very annoyed because he thinks there's an objective standard for what you're supposed to like. Makes no sense. I'll like what I like, just because more people like a movie doesn't make the movie better.

I have watched 30 of you videos so far and found your analysis to be brilliant.
I have recently found out that I have an INTJ personality.
Unfortunately I find that you have made a generalisation in this video at 09:07 that may not be true. You state that Te results in group think.
From personal experience I seek the truth. In a meeting with 9 others I suggested option A whilst the other 9 suggested option B.
I certainly did not agree with the group (group think) and said I would not accept option B. I was prepared to escalate to middle management. If option A was not agreed, I would escalate to upper management. If upper management did not agree with option A, I would be prepared to select the nuclear option and 'go public'.
In the end, upper management agreed with me and the other 9 group members made a U-turn.
Subsequently I was found to be 100% correct, but this decision was so stressful.
I don't know if Ni or a lack of social skills
contributed to my decision making? I don't care for group think, if it is a bad decision.

I know what group think is.
Psychology today- definition: 'Groupthink occurs when a group of well-intentioned people make irrational or non-optimal decisions that are spurred by the urge to conform or the discouragement of dissent. This problematic or premature consensus may be fueled by a particular agenda or simply because group members value harmony and coherence above rational thinking'.
INTJs are iconoclastic so less likely to go under groupthink. INTJs are thought to be the most independent of the 16 personalities. Knowledge is power and Te helps a lot.

Extroverted thinking sounds a lot like the 'Ethos' which Aristotle talks about in his book on rhetoric. He says that ethos or credibility is the most important requirement for winning debates, more important than logic or feelings. I guess that's why ENTJ and ESTJ are considered the most powerful leaders because they love collecting credible knowledge and looking credible.

ENTJs like creditentials but that’s just an example of the credit we seek. We don’t care if you don’t have a creditental, we only care about having some concrete proof that you’re worth listening too. We seek some form of results or concrete credit and this can (but usually doesn’t) come from a credential.

Could it be that the reason Extraverted Thinkers desire credentials (for themselves and from those providing thoughts) is because today, at least in the US culture that I know, credentials are typically seen as a symbol of academic achievement? So credentials are valid because we agree they're valid.
