Does anyone else remember that Nintendo patent for scroll wheel style buttons? The patent basically depicted the shoulder buttons on a controller having scroll wheel functionality. And now the rumor is that their new Joy-Cons might behave like a computer mouse... I'm just putting two and two together here.
Ever since Nintendo have been saying they want to leave the whole idea of console lifecycles behind, I've been getting the feeling that they want to turn the Switch (and the Switch brand) into basically "Nintendo's Steam". The ability to use a joycon as a mouse is genuinely so exciting to me-there's so many TYPES of games and other things (simulation games, builder games, point and click, shooters, drawing, ingame editors, etc etc) that the Switch can run perfectly fine, but which simply aren't as comfortable to control without a mouse. I'm being reminded of the Wii U GamePad. It was pretty cool, but exactly BECAUSE it was so unique and hard to ignore, people behind third party games who wanted to provide the same game experience across platforms would often skip the console. It was a feature that widened the gap between the Wii U and other consoles, asking them to do things in a way that was more tailored specifically to the Wii U. Being able to use a joycon as a mouse feels like it'd have the exact opposite effect: instead of widening the gap with other game platforms, this would bridge a large gap in controls between PC and console, because you could just keep the exact same mouse controls with no compromises and no peripherals! And imagine all the games that are already on Switch 1 (Minecraft, Stardew, Mario Maker 2, Game Builder Garage, Balatro, Ōkami, all the Pikmin and Ace Attorney games) that could suddenly become so much more comfortable to play......
If it’s a sensor similar to a mouse, I think it’s a good idea for some games for example city building games, theme, park games, tycoon games, and other games that require a lot of point and click
If they were attempting to make it a mouse, it would make sense as to why the new Professor Layton is rumored to be a launch title, what a great point and click to show off new hardware
Its pretty obvious the IR sensor is intended for the joy-cons to be used like a computer mouse when you place them sideways on a desk. The new shoulder buttons are bigger and curvier than the Switch 1's and literally mimmick the left and right buttons of a mouse, with your thumb resting on the control stick for character movement in fps games. Those round parts at both edges in the inside of the joy-cons are those glide pads that mouses have at the bottom. Whoever at Nintendo had the idea to re-purpose a regular gaming controller into a mouse simply by placing it sideways: That was a genius move and never been done before in home consoles 👏
I remember a few weeks back a leaker was saying the Joycons had a surprise related to the triggers, saying "think lasers." Suddenly that comment makes all the sense in the world.
The idea of using a joycon as a mouse is certainly interesting, but it seems like a novelty to me. I’m also not convinced that it could actually be comfortable to hold unless they shipped it with an accessory you could slot it into to make it fatter
I'm sure there will be choices. Accessories that go over the JoyCons, mice from Nintendo and/or third parties, you can even plug in the dongle for a wireless mouse (already can be done in Switch 1, I doubt they will break that feature).
They might add that to the shape of the black joycon guard. It might shaped like a mouse. Imagine if we can use this "mouse" during portable session in the plane playing Borderlands or COD
i really hope it is a mouse! It would make so much sense for them to double down on the whole "switch" thing and add more "modes". Desktop mode would fit right in.
My god, using a mouse would be incredible. I've been trying to find a choice for analog joystick movement on PC, but having a mouse for console would be great.
I think they’re just trying to balance addressing the elephant in the room, without jeopardising their positive relationship with Nintendo. Most channels who’ve been going all out milking the leaks for every last click don’t have that relationship.
I'm with Alex.. an IR pointer that can see the size of your TV A mouse is a good additional option, but only with an accessory to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome
Over the years since the Switch launched, I’ve heard many UA-camrs (Nintendo Life included) complain about how point and click games are rough on Switch. This makes so much sense if Nintendo has heard those complaints too.
I don't think it'll work for Splatoon as a mouse, most competitive players have more than 13,000 hours of gameplay counting Splatoon 2 and 3. Changing to a mouse-only option won't work. However, it could be just an option for some new casual players
6:15 I'm on the opposite side of this. An optical sensor needs a frame of reference to capture position. That's why you have the sensor bar on the Wii and WiiU. Without a frame of reference is impossible for the joycon to capture the position through an optical sensor. It would depend on the color of the wall, the things present on the wall like frames, paintings, plants, anything that obstructs the view. It would depend on the illumination too. What happens if you take your switch to a friend's house? Besides all of that, that's not how "lasers" work. A laser is a very focused ray of light. It goes in a straight line and not like a "cone". So if you point to a wall and you are NOT PERFECTLY PERPENDICULAR TO IT, the laser will miss the sensor when reflected. Plus, what happens when the joycons are attached? You would loose that functionality when the joycons are attached to the console and when they are attached to a grip. And... wouldn't it be too easy to accidentally cover the optical sensor with your fingers when it's so close to the "R" button? That would be a very bad design mistake. I don't know... for me, everything seems to point more to the "mouse" function and not "sensor bar" one.
Where there's smoke there's fire. All of these leaks and images aren't fake in my opinion. The Switch 2 will look like a more refined Switch 1. Why is this so hard for some people to comprehend?😐 Nintendo struck gold with the Switch and won't deviate too much from the design.
I heard someone mention that you can have the joy con on the side and slide your finger along the sensor to have essentially a second stick for camera control. There is a lot they can do for this. I hope the mouse thing is real, but I wish they could have figured out the scrollwheel shoulder buttons thing.
For me the MOUSE function is the most likely one. Think about this: when you are in HANDHELD mode, you have a touchscreen to interact with games and menus. Now a MOUSE would do EXACTLY THE SAME when the console is docked. I picture myself using Mario Maker, Mario Paint, Brain Training, Kirby's Magic Paintbrush, or Return to Monkey Island in DOCKED MODE with a Joy-Mouse and everything works! The joy-mouse would close the gap between HANDHELD and DOCKED a little more.
I really doubt that it will be used as a mouse. It just makes no practical sense, even by Nintendo standards. A mouse only works as a concept in tabletop mode. It would be awkward as hell in handheld and docked mode to use it as a mouse, if it would even work at all. Alex's suggestion of it just being used for more accurate motion capture sound far more likely to me.

Exactly. Since those pictures in internet, they must be true, because everything in internet is true and we should believe them without questioning. What a clown...
Oh my god, RTS and tower defense games easily ported to the Switch 2 because of the mouse configuration. The Riftbreaker on Switch 2 with DLSS3.0 and Ray Tracing, plus mouse controls with the left joy stick at the same time! Imagine the possibilities!!!
My idea for a new launch ip is Nintendo theme parks game. Like roller coaster tycoon. You get special rewards to use in game using the new street pass when you visit Nintendo theme parks and stores. Maybe they even have splatfest type events to see what people want added most to the real in life theme parks. Great use of the mouse. Nintendo Land 2.
I’m speculating both a blue accented left joycon and orange accented right in both a black and a white color way (like the 2DS XL). As well as the Switch 2 tablet itself in matching black and white shells. Or maybe the white Switch color way may have both joycon with the orange accents and the black with the blue accents 🤷🏽♂️.
I wonder if a Joy-Con-as-mouse would have a usecase for Wii emulation? Imagine playing Animal Crossing City Folk and being able to switch to mouse mode (by just turning your JoyCon and perhaps pressing a button) for menus.
Wish the kirby game port switch rumor/leak is true... it would be soo awesome with the kirby collection of triple deluxe, epic yarn & planet robobot... also another 3d all stars with mario 64 ds, kart 64, galaxy 2 & 3d land..
Official support would maybe be cool. We used a mouse with Hypnospace Outlaw. I can’t imagine playing that game without one. Hopefully this extends to using regular mice as well.

I can’t wait for them to release this thing, so we can get the Switch 3 speculation industry off the ground.

should've mentioned that it was a valid serial number on the actual image itself, someone put it into Nintendo's warranty system to check
Why was that outro so ominous
“Play some games on your switch…while you still can 🔫😈”

The idea of using a joycon as a mouse is certainly interesting, but it seems like a novelty to me. I’m also not convinced that it could actually be comfortable to hold unless they shipped it with an accessory you could slot it into to make it fatter
Novelty? Just like how the Joy-Con R contained an infrared depth tracking sensor. This is Nintendo; they are all about novelty and less about comfort.

@cwega2463 they mean the ones made for this video
Looks like Mario Paint will make its return with the mouse feature!
It's so random but that's Nintendo for you. Either this gets completely forgotten after a year or gets gemuine support from various devs.

Nintendo's UA-cam channel has been oddly quiet. They haven't uploaded anything for a couple of weeks.
Nintendo left the market.
Mario paint 2 coming to Nintendo switch 2, soon!
My prediction: these recent leaks are real and we're gonna get an announcement as soon as this week.
If it does have mouse capability, they will make a full sized clip in mouse grip for the new joycon (similar to the wiimote clipping into the mario kart wheel)
Third party manufacturers would probably come up with something too.

@sparkypack the switch dock has USB outlets.
