The WISE assumption to make when determining the potential risk of a man being a predator/danger is INCREDIBLY high if said man is a conservative cis het with some measure of success. They're defending him by saying, "Maybe he's just a complete idiot who doesn't understand how admitting to things works." Imagine for a minute that in response to allegations, one puts out a multi-paragraph tweet admitting to messaging a minor repeatedly, and we know it was repeatedly based on him saying, "These conversations sometimes verged on inappropriate," conversations plural, meaning multiple over time. Now, imagine you didn't actually know that person was a minor, and when you found out, you made it clear that you couldn't talk to them anymore. Would you weirdly leave that fact out of your admission? Would you leave out a fact that makes what you did at least somewhat more defensible? Sure, it would still be weird, but it would be much easier for people to defend. Leaving that out doesn't make any goddamn sense. That is the first damn thing he would have said.
