Yes you are right, Songpyeon originally is made from Short Grain Rice Flour. But it is very hard to get the flour especially in my hometown and I’m sure there’s a lot of people out there have the same problem. So I create this recipe to make it easier, hopefully this can be an alternative to solve the problem. Thank you again for your info.
Thanks so much for sharing this great video! I have a question: if I wanted to make them ahead of time, would they hold up well if I store them in the freezer right after shaping and steam before serving? Appreciate any thoughts you have to share on that!
Hi Amanda, it’s always been a pleasure… Yes, you can freeze uncooked Songpyeon and steam it later. When freezing uncooked ones, freeze them separated on a tray first so they don't stick to each other for a few hours until they harden; and then you can transfer them to a Ziplog bag and throw them back into the freezer to use later. To cook the frozen Songpyeon; Steam uncooked frozen Songpyeon over high heat for 17 minutes instead of 15 minutes. Hope this helps.
I REALLY want to make it but I have some questions that I will be so grateful if you can help me with 1 I use any type of rice flour +glutinous rice flour right? 2 can I add icing sugar and vanilla to the dough?
1. Yes, any brand works well; just make sure that you use “Unbleached” Rice Flour and Glutinous Rice Flour for best result (because bleached flour treated with chemical agents so it usually has unpleasant taste). 2. I don’t recommend to add any icing sugar to the dough because sugar will add moisture to the dough; which can cause the dough more sticky and hard to shape. For the Vanilla, maybe about 1/2 teaspoon should be OK. Hope this helps
Sorry to hear that and thanks for sharing. If you want to try again next time just make sure that you use unbleached rice flour and glutinous rice flour (preferably Thailand Brand) for best results. Hope this helps.

This is a superb video. It's great to see natural colour harvest. The rice cakes are beautiful. Such talent
Thank you for your compliment, I’m so glad that you like it.
Songpyeon is made with short grain rice flour, not glutinous rice(찹쌀가루). Or you can try dry rice flour. You can get it at Korean super markets.

Also, this is very pretty
Thank you for your compliment.
Unfortunately you must use rice flour in this recipe.
