Why you should upgrade your 1990's Mountain Bike

- There are a lot of middle aged riders out there either starting to mountain bike or getting back into it. Whether it is to get fit, for fun, or both, if you have an old bike you are trying to hold on to and it is taking a toll on your body; try a modern bike. It can make the difference between giving up or rediscovering a sport you love! Specially on more technical terrain.
This Cannondale Super V still makes a great XC bike when riding twisty tight single track and in those conditions my times are actually better on it. My son still uses it since he only MTB's occasionally. I also use it as a lender when friends want to go on the trails. - Спорт
Hi there! I'm planning to upgrade my front suspension i just don't know what is the size and brand of the adaptor that you use? I appreciate your help. Thank you so much!
Google Headshok to 1 1/8 adapter. A few options out there. The one I used is not available anymore.
@@TonyHob I got it. I appreciate your help. I owe you one! Thanks alot.
I have an FSA headset on my F300.
4:10 If you go to a professional welder, he will TIG weld a rear disc adapter on the Cannondale. I've had it done with a 2004 Norco Mountaineer. Yes its 90.00 but seeing discs on an old school bike is dope!
@IntuitionPCS Do you remember the eBay seller? I'm thinking about converting mine. Thanks!
@PCS I have a cannondale super V 1000. I want to install disc breaks on it . What do you have to change on the bike to do it ?
90s mtb are good to convert to urban commuters.
I'm working on a rebuilt 96 Pro Flex 856 for a commuter bike.
I have the 1995 1000. Over the years I tried out new bikes but could never find one that I liked more. Finally in 2018 I bought a Specialized Levo EMTN bike. Still love my 1000 & continue riding it. All original.
The older bikes with 26" wheels are just better. Thanks.
I do still love this old bike ua-cam.com/video/31R6gDz0lr8/v-deo.html
Agreed I have one and it’s better than any new bikes I’ve tried
I LOOOOOVE my old 26'er. 2002/3 Saracen, it's not old enough to be classed as vintage MTB but it is DEFFO retro.... I love it. Older rides need more finesse and bike handling skills than these modern monsters
Very good video......love the older Cannondales
morgan roberts sr thank you, this was my first FS bike in 1996. I still ride it and works great. I have a video of it on the trail from a couple of months ago.
Still riding my Super V900, but with slicks and road only. Love the aggressive geometry.
The nostalgia I get from this bike.
I had mine set up for Street and the head shock I would never replace
Cool!
Ive got a 99 gary fisher Joshua f4 with upgrades... 26er nation
26 life
Nice DiamondBack! I have the same color and really upgraded it! Yours looks great too!
Your Own Adventure thanks, it has been an excellent bike
Found your video looking up vintage Cannondale. I recently got a Super V carbon 900 to fulfill my childhood dream of getting one of these cool looking bikes instead of one from Toys R Us. These bikes are like buying a vintage muscle car. Cool to look at but not to be used as it once was. Just ride it around the block, keep it shiny, and repeat.
👍
Just went through this with my old bikes. ProFlex 856 and a 99 Raleigh M7000. Went with a Trek Fuel EX8 after trying out their demo bike. Keeping the ProFlex for nostalgia, my brothers getting a free Full suspension bike out of it.
Trek fuel is an excellent bike. You were smarter than me and you went high end right off the bat. I bought the Atroz Comp, got hooked back into mountain biking really bad and then ended up buying a DB Release 4c. I remember the ProFlex, such a cool bike back then!
I got one of those but the super v 700 model with the moto 120 and fox rx vanilla at the back got it cheap a love the vintage look
White587 same!!
Super nice :)
I have a '94 Nishiki Cornice 26" 21spd that I've been thinking of modding into a 69er commuter-camper/flow-trail hybrid, I have to do _something_ with it cause as my daily it's really showing it's age with the shifters, cables, and front shocks with like maybe a 1/2" of travel left in it. And talking about body aches, my back & neck ain't too thrilled with hunching over the old bar either so I'm probably gonna go with a wide 2 piece bmx bar so I can lash my sleeping bag to it too.
i have a old 1992 Alpinestars AL-mega
had a guy we;d a tab to convert to disc brakes , also install reducer in head tube for a 1/8 forks ( original was 1 1/4 ")
I really love my 1996 cannondale
I ended up giving this one to my nephew, he loves it!
Tony's Hobbies oh that’s awesome I got mine from my dads friend at work for free so I’m really happy.
I'm still riding 26" and triple chainring 🤞👴
I have well over 10 bikes and all but the 1 bmx are 26 inchers.
I still enjoy my top of the line 26” Cannondale Deore XT SM2000 from about 1992 and 2016 and 2020 Scalpels. Yes, the 1992’s got the speed uphill, but really NO comparison - the newer bikes are way, way, way better.
Yeah, and they're way, way, way more expensive.
I've found a 90 mm stem works well on my large frame Cannondale.
Great work on that bike!!! I have a Cannondale super V 1000 . I want to rebuild its suspensions DD 50 and fox alps 4 . However I havent found the replacement parts . Please could you tell me where could buy them ?
Luciano Vives most of the parts are no longer available. I found a kit for the original front shock on eBay years ago. My Alps 4 is still working great without a rebuild after all these years!
@@TonyHob , My fox alps 4 is dead , do you know what would be a good option to replace it ?
@@LucaVV1900 not really. I searched in the past and could not find anything. Try a seal kit: www.ebay.ca/itm/153747374413

Can anybody give me some ideas about resolving the bottom bracket fixes for a 1990 Fisher Supercaliber. I don’t want to locktite the new bearings in. Has anybody found workaround?
Hey Tony, would you be so kind to tell me what reducer you used for the fork swap? I'm 66 and ride every day and fixing up a 1999 Cannondale F-700. Much appreciated your video. Thank you! Aloha
The one I used is no longer available. Search for a 1.5 to 1 1/8” reducer headset.

Crane creek sell an adaptor, and I have seen offset adaptors that change the fork angle, they were English made.
I just bought this same exact bike off ebay last summer. Can you let me know what parts you ordered for yours. Really love your upgrades. One main problem I have is on the rear swing arm has a brake anchor that’s been snapped/broken off. Wasn’t sure where to get a new swing arm at? Unless you wanna sell me yours since you got a new one? I really love this 95 V700. I just wanna be able to ride this year on it since I wasn’t able last year.
I gave mine to one of my nephews. Finding a swing arm is going to be hard. Maybe try a Cannondale or vintage MTB group/forum
@@TonyHob Right on, thank you 😊
I got a old kinda cheap mtb, but i can't seem to find the bushing near the bottom bracket
Quimerateck .....try a company called Enduro Bearing
I'm 75 and have a couple of 90s vintage bikes.. A couple thousand 90's dollars invested. I have a full suspension Schwinn (ca 2001) and a fat tube Cannondale from about 1996 with no suspension. I love the Cannondale. , At my current level of fitness and age, I'd like to get the Cannondale back on the trails... Nothing too aggressive, but out there. Here in Phoenix we have tons of trails, but not too friendly to a fully rigid bike. I bought the Schwinn on sale on a whim one day when i was pissed at my Cannondale for breaking my butt. The Schwinn was $1500 in 1990s dollars and I have only put about 20 miles on it. I think I might just take a loss on the Schwinn and upgrade the Cannondale with the proceeds.. Thoughts???
.
If the Schwinn is a Homegrown you can probably get good money for it. Cannondale is not what it used to be though still good bikes. I would look into selling the Schwinn and checking out something like a Trek or Specialized and can probably find a better value than Cannondale and with easier to upgrade parts.
I've got a 95 Raleigh MT400 rsi Technium...has a rockshox Quadra 10.
Worth upgrading? I'm 40ish & ride bike paths. Kinda want a front disc and some wrist relief.
TheeJoeyLee I think that it's still a great bike for bike paths. Service the brakes. You will be surprised what a difference fresh soft brake pads will make. The rubber hardens with time.
@@TonyHob They are unthreaded cantilever.. Biggest pain to adjust. Especially in the side of a busy road.
I have some kool stop salmon pads on order in the mean time
rear brake, go for maguras, rim crushers!!! HG22 I think there were.
Last year someone local put a Super V for sale on FB with those Magura brakes fo $50. I contacted the seller within the hour but needless to say it was already sold.
I bought the same front shock for my old super v . Did you cut the steert tube to install it on the frame ?
Yes, I had to cut it
Awesome !!!! How do you install the front shock ?
I used a 1.5” to 1 1/8” headset adapter
@@TonyHob Thanks. I have one Super V 1000 active 1996. I´ve been looking for the cannondale KP058 adapter. but when I found one that is out of stock or other diferent option. But It is the same.
Tony the cost of updating my cannondale super v 1000. It's around US 700 . Do you think that is worth to spend that money on that ?
I would get a newer bike
I have a Delta v 2000 and I need to change the head shok to a fork shok can you please tell me were and what to get to do this please let me know
You need to buy a head tube reducer from 1 1/2" to 1 1/8". I bought mine on Amazon but they don't have this particular one anymore. Search headshok to 1 1/8" reducer and you should find it.
Found it thanks so much 😁
What parts did u need to fit the new fork on this bike ?
They are NLA
What is your new bike make and model?
The one on the video is a 2015 Diamondback Atroz Comp. I sold it and now have a Diamondback Release 4c
Always hated those frames, just realized it was all the forks fault. Really ugly little things. This one is looking real good
Can I change my retro bike's mechanical disk brakes to hydraulic brakes?
If it already has disk brakes it is easy to change them out for hydraulic ua-cam.com/video/ZToPlkNiHv0/v-deo.html
What stem and handlebar did you install ?
The handlebars are the original Coda that came with it. The stem was a cheap Wake from Amazon that in retrospect was too short (20 mm I think)
Have a 2001 Jekyll 600. I had to replace the seals on the rear shock. Mine has a headshock.
By the way I like the rims you have on your bike what site did you get them from I converted my Jekyll back to rim brakes from discs. Originally it had rim brakes. I like the old school feeling of not having control.
but I don't have a 1990's Mountain Bike though! :(
(I bought one anyway, rockhopper restoration incoming)
What front shock are you using on your bike ?
It is a 26", 100mm Rockshox with anti lever brakes. I don't know if it is really available anymore
@@TonyHob thanks !! Do you know is possible to change the v-brakes to disck ones on super V frames ?
I have been told there are brackets for this or that you can have a disk bracket soldered on but I have not tried it.
@@TonyHob thanks you for the information.
Is the front shock coil or air ?
Coil
What stem did you replace the old one ?
You have v brakes, NOT cantilever brakes on the 95 Cannondale..
Correct
technically a v brake is called a 'linear pull cantilever'
