It's funny to see why Dave was so enthusiastic for Kurt to do this by himself during the show.
That wasn’t enthusiastic.
He was mocking Kurt with a smug : “wow. He didn’t screw up?” With an added drumbeat which was kinda shitty of him because Dave knew how much he hated being ridiculed.
To which Kurt responded kinda aggravated: “Am I gonna do this by myself?”
Dave was obviously flabbergasted since he didn’t expect such a harsh respons. “Dddd-ooo-do it by yyy-yourself?
It was Dave’s time to play the guitar and be in the limelight. (Which he obviously envied Kurt for)
I’m glad Kurt did this song by himself and showed that Nirvana equals Kurt Cobain and Dave will never be as good.
He just gives me bad juju. Idk why.
Especially during the whole MTV Unplugged show. It seems to me his whole “nice guy” act was dropped and we got to see another Dave.
I definitely feel there’s bad energy between the two of them and you can even see how Krist was feeling awkward about it.

@@dimeterchevaeros8480 Kurt in late 93 would complain alot about dave's playing, kurt would say he wanted Dave to play like the melvin's drummer and would go on about manic frenzy rant while being high, One time in New York (i could be wrong correct me if i am) July 1993 after the Roseland show in a hotel room with Michael Azzerad, kurt was criticising Dave's playing and was shouting really loud that It made Michael Azzerad To tell him to lower it down in which Kurt's response was: I don't care, Dave probably heard it, and it was likely he knew.
The MTV December 10 1993 interview when the band was interviewed after the Roy Wilkins Arena show, you could see clearly Dave and Krist sticking together while kurt being a bit spaced out from them both, And you could sense that bad energy between them, I know it's pure speculation but it's something you cannot notice, Dave himself admitted that things were weird in early 94 and they really weren't a tight knit band they were as before since they were on the verge of breaking up.
@@dimeterchevaeros8480 I was thinking that dynamic was there but maybe I was imagining it, because after the song, Dave earnestly said, "that was good" and Kurt responded "shut up". In one of the books, someone back stage said Kurt felt bad about saying that, like he came off too mean, he was just overly sensitive and assuming it was an insult in the moment. The Dave and Kurt dynamic definitely needs to be explored more because it's a weird one... In their early interviews, it seems Dave is trying to mirror Kurt's personality so hard but completely failing with weird jokes and flubs that have Kurt and Krist giving side eye. Kurt also mocks Dave for being "the most well adjusted" and Courtney has since stated that Kurt hated Dave and they used to mock him all the time for being so basic. She said 'we joked that ppl thought we would die of drugs but Dave's actually be the one to die young of bungie jumping' bc he's such a bro. Some of their tension was definitely real but its kinda hard for me to imagine he really hated Dave. Some of it seems ego on Kurt's part as Dave was getting in on the song writing, royalties, and very aspirational. But tbh, I also get it as personality and style-wise Dave never should have been in Nirvana.
@@mirata7748 Although they definitely had tensions at that point, I think you're reaching on the 'bad energy' in the 12-10-1993 interview, they are all talking and joking, sitting close together on the couch, and Kurt has his arm around Dave and they share a cigarette lighter, looking very naturally like friends.
That's why Kurt says "I'll try in the normal key" on the live show.
Yea I always wondered why he said “I’ll try it in a different key” when E flat standard was the original key for the song anyway. It looks like they were playing a whole step down in the rehearsal, then just said fuck it during the live show.

Yes. From about Feb '92 the band tuned down half a step to relieve the strain on Kurt's voice. Everything from this point was played and recorded half a step down - including In Utero and Unplugged.

Favourite band. Kurt will be missed. Seriously one of my favourite personalities, I had a very similar childhood to him and his music has really helped me over the years, I wish I could of seen Nirvana live (especially reading). He didn't care what ethnicity you were, gender, or sexuality. There are good people in this world and he was definitely one of them. WILL TRULY BE MISSED.
