Try the Ping Zing 2’s! They look weird for sure, but give them a few rounds and you’ll find they’re a unicorn iron. Player’s sole design and control with GI level MOI. There’s a reason Westy played them for so long
The W is a 50. If one throws away preconceived notions of distance and work backwards from the distance rather than from the number on the sole, they’re just fantastic irons.
Years ago I tried every club in the shop new and used… they felt so good and I hit them straight. I bought them used. I took them to Ping where they fit them to me free of charge. They re-gripped them for a small fee. They looked brand new. The lofts are not the same as other clubs so when my friends ask me what club I’m using… I tell them don’t ask me… I had to take them to the range and figure out the distance for each club. After all these years I still love them.
Think I first played Ping Eye 2s back in 1984. Thanks to you, I’m going to T&D Golf in Oldsmar tomorrow to pick-up a set of White Dots & an Anser putter. Hope the time tunnel trip pays off!
I bought a complete set in orange dot from barber's point pro shop when I was in the Navy for 512.00 and my game improved 100%. I sold them when I got out of the Navy and regretted it. I later bought a set of the copies which are very nice but couldn't get over the loss of those irons. So I recently bought another entire set off of ebay for about 165 dollars. I love em
I started playing two years ago at 50 years old. Not wanting to spend a lot as a beginner, I found Ping Eye 2's in a 6, 7, 8, 9 and W at a goodwill. I love these irons despite still shooting in 90s. I don't know anything different so these videos are fun to watch.
Legendary Pings! The Ping Eye 2 clubs certainly set the standard in golf clubs with Karsten and his NASA engineering background. I still own a complete set of Eye 2 + (2-SW) and ISI Nickle (2-PW) to go along with my new G430s. I've been a Ping player since the early 80s and collect the older putters. Actually prefer the older "classic" putters better than the newer PLDs.
I am 27 and I play ping eye 2's from 2-9 and W and a Callaway 60° Forged V. I want to get a wedge to fill the gap between the two. What would you recommend? Also what putter would you recommend for someone that loves the old ping putters that make the "PING" noise but don't really know what to get or are they not worth playing today?
@@Treyz44 As far as wedges go, it really depends on the turf conditions where you normally play. I use a low bounce MG4 for all but winter conditions. And this time of year I game the Cleveland Smartsole wedges. The grass here is generally dormant bermuda with awful lies. The smartsole wedges are ugly, but really perform well. For putters, I recommend maybe a Scottsdale Anser either in BeCu or Nickle. I have several of these that are such a joy to game. But the putter in my bag today is a PLD Anser D.
@@MikeBriggs24Thank you so much for your response. I am looking into all that you listed. Wow those are some amazing putters! I am looking at them now. Also your putter in your bag is such a cool style.
Gabe, what an awesome video! I share your enthusiasm on older clubs with a passion. Although I currently play JPX921 Hot Metals my #1 somewhat older irons I love, and still own to this day are the Ping Rapture V2’s from about 2009. I have a full set 3-LW with the TCF-939i graphite shafts and they are my treasure! They only have about 12 games use as I have about 4 sets of irons I rotate just for fun but they are a treasure. I love your enthusiasm keep up the great videos.
These irons brought back so much memories for me. I learned to play golf using a custom set of Ping Eye 2 Orange dot when i was 12 years old. Won my first tournament with them at age 13. Kept them all thru college and i wish i hung on to them. Biggest regret of my life was selling them. Would love to find another set for nostalgia. Enjoyed your video !!! Thanks for the memories.
I would still game Ping Eye Twos. I actually kind of prefer the feel of older clubs. Recently I’ve been using Titleist DCIs. Not much distance, but I do like how compact they are.
Living in the PHX area, I’ve been collecting Ping stuff for several years. Out here you can find Ping clubs in the Goodwills from time to time and I found a Black Dot 4-GW set of Eye 2’s about 4 years ago! 🥰 I’ve played with them off and on over the years and they’re my favorite out of the 3 sets of Pings I’ve collected. If you find em, scoop em up, friends…you won’t regret it!
What was so great about this video Gabe, was that we are accustomed to which clubs you hit on your home course on certain holes/situations. So it was such a great comparison to see how these sticks have held up over time! If you ever see any TaylorMade RAC irons, these play soft & long, and are my favourite classic "Sunday set." So many of us upgraded from RAC to the Sim or M2, it would be interesting to see how these stack up against modern clubs. Great work!
And to think the score was the same if not maybe better (and went irons only from the tees). Pretty crazy stuff! I'll def look out for those RACs. That would be a great comparison.
I bought sets of 3-SW for my daughter and my son. Orange dot and black dot. Both purchased last year for $90 and $120. Same week I bought a set of beryllium Ping Eye 2+, 3-LW with matching serial numbers. I hit them at the range some. They are old school standard lofts (PW is 48 or 49*, 7 iron measured 35*). By today’s jacked up clubs they are short distance. Ping Eye 2 will last 50 years. My current putter is a 40 year old Ping Zing. I normally play blades, and this week received my new Takomo 101T irons.
I still rock my Ping G15 irons. There's not a chance I am changing them for anything modern. I hit straight almost always with them. There's a lot to be said for older ping irons and newcomers shouldn't look elsewhere. They are very forgiving clubs and never cost a fortune.
I had a set of Ping Eye 2+ (I think the + was a change in the grooves, not certain) and I played with them for several years back in what I would guess was the mid-90's. I loved them and maintained a low single digit handicap with those clubs. The lofts on them are so much weaker than what the modern clubs have. As I recall, the 7 iron was something like 35 degrees, weaker than most modern 8 irons. Now, at age 72, I need all the distance help I can get.
@@LetsPlayThru The tommy Armour 845S Silver Scotts still perform very well, any of the old mizuno blades would be cool to test vs the new mizuno pro irons
Bought Ping Eye2's new back in early 80's. Loved those clubs. You could shred the cover off even with the old hard balls back then. Those stainless steel irons were so tough. No need to worry about banging around in the bag.
Great video. I also had a full set of ping eye 3-pw in beryllium copper and 2 ping zing 2 sand wedges in beryllium copper. To this day I can’t believe I sold those clubs on eBay 😢
I've been playing some old Taylormade RAC OS irons with lots of offset for years, and I think they would play similar to the Ping Eye irons. Very playable. I would buy a set of the Ping Eye
I have been playing these irons (ping eye 2 + orange dot) since 1994 would not change them for any of the modern clubs except for maybe pxg. Great clubs and very nice review!!
I still have my set. 2 through wedge and don't really care to buy or play anything newer. I take care of them, don't hit as far as my playing partners, and really don't care. Never getting rid of them. Just think about this. Will some of the "new" stuff be around as long? Only time will tell!!!
I had those in steel and copper back in highschool in the 90’s. Your yardages are exactly what I used to hit them at. 140 8 iron, 190 4 iron. I loved those clubs. I think I’m going to get a set to learn to again….I can’t hit my Mizuno MP29s after a ten year hiatus. 😂
That….was….AWESOME! I had a set of Ping Zing 2’s back in the late 90s…loved them! Wound up selling them to my buddy and bought King Cobras…he wound up kicking my a$$ every time we teed it up…I still miss those puppies! Thanks Gabe! Now I’m going to check the Replay Sports stores around me to see if they have any!!!! LOL…
These and the Tommy Armour 845s were ubiquitous in the 90’s. Those two sets are still the greatest irons ever made. You can talk about all the technological advancements you want, but when you hit these irons flush, there was no better feeling!!
Still see the old Ping irons in some second hand golf stores in Scotland. Ping was so far ahead of the rest when you look back and factor in custom fitting as we now know it.
Apart from when I knew nothing about golf (just getting started and wedges) I only play second hand clubs now. These result prove the theory right. I've learnt how easy it is to regrip clubs.
People love those clubs and i see them everywhere. Second hand stores and garage sales. Market place. I didnt play back then and im not a tech guy but those are so legendary even i have heard of them.
I’ve got a set of Ping ISI irons, I’ve had from new since 1998. I’ve only returned to golf after 15 years off (kids get in the way) and picking them up and hitting them again was like an old friend. I wanted to embrace the modern tech and so bought a set of PXG 0211 but i'm struggling to hit them as accurately and as well as the Pings. Sure the PXG go a lot further, 7 Iron of PXG is equivelant to the 5 iron in the Pings but I hit the 5 iron of the Pings with such a nice strike and the sound is amazing. What I want is a set of the Pings with the modern lofts and tech but with the feel and sound of the old clubs. You suggested Wilson may be close, what about Srixon forged? Have you tried them?
Yeah, that sound is so sweet. I did try Srixons but didn't seem to get along with them personally. Although when I brought my dad for a custom fitting that's what he chose - ZX4 to be exact. So I'd say def try them out. And yes, Wison has those classic vibes in both looks and sound/feel.
Nice!!! I just bought some red dot from eBay seller last month!! Just started playing golf and these are solid. Still learning the game, got them for 150.00 3-PW SW I feel like it’s buy far the Best Buy of the year for me 😂 they are unbelievably brand new crazy
i got Ping/i2s (blue dots) from my dad as my first set. Still have them even sent the 3 and 4 irons back to Ping to have them updated (shaft/grip replaced and loft/lie update blue to black dot) to match my G425s. They're not the same distance wise, but it's nice having them in the bag still.
Would be neat to see you build a bag around the eye 2’s. I just picked up 3-PW Becu’s and have same vintage ping putter. Thinking of newer driver, long hybrid and need to add atleast a SW.
I was always a fan of the Forged Hogan Edge irons, main competitor with Ping. I would stare at them in the pro shop wishing I could have that set. So I would be curious to see an old school head to head between these two set of irons.
I just picked up a set of 8 irons, missing the #2. Orange dot, copper metal. New Golf Pride grips and Grafalloy attack Lite shafts. have not tried them yet. thanks for the video.
I want to know why I don't see other golfers playing on the course? Nice irons too. Ping Zing II's in orange dot are fantastic also. stay safe PS if you can find a good set of Wilson Staff RM's for sale snatch them up too, just picked up a full set and just wonderful forged irons.
Just saw this video, great snag on the Eye2’s. I’ve been playing these since my college years. Tried many times to knock them out of the bag but nothing, I mean, nothing plays as good as these irons. I see you play at Carolwood, played there many times over the years. Great track.
Thankfully the set I received was in excellent shape! All I needed was new grips. The old Ping Dylagrips were in tact, but very fragile from sitting all those years.
Great review!! I've been a ping fan boy for a while. I wonder if you had them bent to a stronger loft like newer clubs you would pick up the distance they currently lack?
having owned every set of irons made for several years the best clubs were the Ping eye2s and the Taylor Made 320s by far the best for me when it came to working the ball
As I said before good to see you playing irons every shot. When testing them you can still play the same under/over game your viewers like. No driver needed.
I'm assuming these vids were made before the hurricane. I hope you made out ok. My wife's folks pretty much lost their snowbird place in Fort Myers. I had these. Everybody had these. One of the iconic irons of the time. I had a couple of buddies that played them in high school and I was jealous. It was a few years until I was able to buy a set myself. An icon of the 80s and the grand daddy of all game improvement irons. I do like that pullover. I don't think the color is mine but still nice.
@@LetsPlayThru Yeah, the course looks great. A shout out to your greenskeeper and crew there. I'm not sure if my dad's course in Bradenton is back up yet or not. It might be a little bit wetter than yours. I know it didn't get the same weather that down south did but I wouldn't have been surprised to see some tree limbs still down. My wife's folks were luckily in Illinois when the storm hit so they were safe but they lived in one of those little hurricane magnet trailers in the winter and it looks like they pretty much lost everything. The storm surge came up to the windows in the place which means the thing is going to be a structural loss. They are holding off on going down until the situation stabilizes a little bit better.
I just watched this video. I’m thinking of getting a set of eye 2’s. But I was reading through the comments & found this one. I live in Fort Myers. We got lucky. I’m sorry to hear about your family’s house. We had a few friends lose everything. I hope all is well now.
Mr. LPT- What a fun video! Too bad you had no long irons in your set. Nowadays the manufacturers tend to only sell sets with the 4 iron as the longest club but in my thinking that's because they want to offer "long hitting" irons (read: "jacked up lofts") as a selling point. I still like my 2-PW Eye 2 irons!
I had to cheat and look it up...Eye 2's introduction was 1982. Fresh grips, perhaps a re-shaft? Might also want to have the loft & lie checked as well. Could be a set for a lifetime of enjoyment.
I have always loved the Ping Eye 2s but I honestly think its a tragedy that the Tommy Armour 845s from the same period (while still very popular) werent the best seller in the time period. I thought they looked better and to my swing were a smoother iron. Less chunky and a bit less offset.
Ive played the p790s, the p770s and the ping i230s Then, for the fun of it i bought some eye 2s, I played according to loft not according to Iron and dropped 6-8 strokes a game right away, these will be in my bag forever
I got a set of red dot last season. The clubs go as far as i remember. Didn't play for a long time. Only different outdide of looks with modern clubs is...degree of club face.
Callaway big Bertha tungsten titanium next f you get a chance. Them things are huge but I've e never hit a club like it the ball flies of like a cannon! If you ever find a set with the Memphis steel shaft grab em😃 great video I love the retro clubs.
Have these with the copper finish. They are about 40 years old! Usually them as part of a rotation I do. 😊. I always think Ping irons feel pretty good.
@@LetsPlayThru oh so many as I buy second hand. JPK 919 forged at present, Ping Zing 2, Ping G5’s, Mizuno T Zoid comp ez and Wilson Launch Pads. I am very experimental! Got some old XXIOs coming! Love your enthusiasm Gabe. PS I always change the grips!
they feel buttery i played em most of tthis year. i got 2 birdies in a row last year when i tried em and that never happens so i rocked em for most of the year.
Oh wow, I bought those clubs in 2002…I saved up for months and got a used set on eBay. Purest looking clubs I’ve ever seen. I could not hit them for the life of me 🤣 I hope you fair better!
Gave my ISI~k's to my son when i got new clubs. I always missed those clubs because I played some amazing rounds with them. Saw a set in my local club store last month for 99 bucks. I grabbed them and I've played a few rounds with them. Not the distance of my P790's but laser straight and accurate.
The company is not out of business, but the Tampa location closed because they could not renew the lease. They are hoping to open again next year in a new location.
From late 1990's into early 2000's I played Ping Eye 2 with ZZ Lite Cushin shafts. I've bought and sold at least 8 sets of clubs since then. And I can still fondly remember the feel and performance of the Eye 2. Though I would not return to the club over my current set of Honma TW / World with graphite shafts. Newer technology does offer better performance.
Hi, I'm a golfing musician as well. Jazz guitarist. Anyway since my October 2022 post about Honma clubs, I traded those in to buy a set of Titleist T200i. Returned to steel shafts after the Honma graphites. Overall my long shots are more consistent , 10% longer and more predictable. So happy with the Titleist that I also bought the TSi2 driver, 3 wood, 5 wood and 5 hybrid.
This is the only classic club that Ping still sells. The Eye 2 Plus has a bit more distance. I think that they have sold 500K sets?? The ISI S is even better, not the K the S .
I love my ping eye 2 coppers . 2 through pw in a whole bag of clubs at a garage sale for 60 dollars. Sold rest of clubs for 175. I play my best rounds with them.

A 3 iron in the ping is probably comparable to a modern 4 iron i imagine, so just choose a # less than contemporary lofts

Nice!!! I just bought some red dot from eBay seller last month!! Just started playing golf and these are solid. Still learning the game, got them for 150.00 3-PW SW I feel like it’s buy far the Best Buy of the year for me 😂 they are unbelievably brand new crazy
Great video Gabe!! It was clear that you were having a blast playing the Eye2 itons!!
Might have to break them out Sunday, John
@@LetsPlayThru A fine idea!!!
All of us in the good old old days hit 8 irons 130-140....You'll get that ace soon !
What is the on course tracking launch monitor you are using
i got Ping/i2s (blue dots) from my dad as my first set. Still have them even sent the 3 and 4 irons back to Ping to have them updated (shaft/grip replaced and loft/lie update blue to black dot) to match my G425s. They're not the same distance wise, but it's nice having them in the bag still.
That’s awesome that you kept your dad’s clubs and improved them
Old PINGEYE2 irons were definitely ahead of their time. Your videos are really helping me as I recover from the surgery.
Hoping for a speedy recovery Gil 🙏
Would be neat to see you build a bag around the eye 2’s. I just picked up 3-PW Becu’s and have same vintage ping putter. Thinking of newer driver, long hybrid and need to add atleast a SW.
I was always a fan of the Forged Hogan Edge irons, main competitor with Ping. I would stare at them in the pro shop wishing I could have that set.
So I would be curious to see an old school head to head between these two set of irons.
Oh good call!
Are they the tour model 3s knock off of these
I just picked up a set of 8 irons, missing the #2. Orange dot, copper metal. New Golf Pride grips and Grafalloy attack Lite shafts. have not tried them yet. thanks for the video.
My Copper Ping Eye 2..Lob wedge is a staple in my bag since the 80’s. It’s been re-groved twice….LOVE IT…..
Sweet!!
I want to know why I don't see other golfers playing on the course? Nice irons too. Ping Zing II's in orange dot are fantastic also. stay safe
PS if you can find a good set of Wilson Staff RM's for sale snatch them up too, just picked up a full set and just wonderful forged irons.
Just saw this video, great snag on the Eye2’s. I’ve been playing these since my college years. Tried many times to knock them out of the bag but nothing, I mean, nothing plays as good as these irons. I see you play at Carolwood, played there many times over the years. Great track.
They still hold up! Yes Carrollwood is a great track 😀
I was gifted a set of black dot Ping Zings and I love them. I’ll game them until they’re completely toast. Love these old Ping irons.
Have you looked into getting the grooves sharpened? They even sell sharpeners on Amazon pretty cheap.
Might be worthy of a test to find out :)
I've always wanted to try Ping 2's. Still a classic club all these years later. Thanks for the great content, I really enjoy your vids.
Highly recommend it, I’m happy I finally took the plunge
These clubs are bringing back such good memories
Oldies but still goodies
Did the super driver video come out yet? Just wanted to check I’m not missing it, I recall you talking about it during the Takomo review video.
Very soon, I had to take the super driver to get fixed. Just got it back yesterday
having owned every set of irons made for several years the best clubs were the Ping eye2s and the Taylor Made 320s by far the best for me when it came to working the ball
As I said before good to see you playing irons every shot. When testing them you can still play the same under/over game your viewers like. No driver needed.
Are all the Edwin Watts stores closing now, or just the Tampa store? I was just at the one in Orlando off of I-4 a couple of weeks ago.
Just the Tampa one, they weren’t able to renew their lease with the plaza.
Oh I’m so sorry to hear that. Horrible devastation down there 🥲
This was yesterday here. It’s amazing how quickly they got the course back in shape.
They are a great club, They just have a little too much offset like you said.I had a tendency to end up left of my target too often.
Nicely done
I must say I’m glad you didn’t chip that last one in…didn’t want to go to sleep tonight having images of you running off the green shirtless! LOL!
I really wanted to re-create the Brandi Chastain moment 🤣🤣
@@LetsPlayThru Oh my…
That was worth a watch 👍
Giddy Up!
I had to cheat and look it up...Eye 2's introduction was 1982. Fresh grips, perhaps a re-shaft? Might also want to have the loft & lie checked as well. Could be a set for a lifetime of enjoyment.
I still have my gold dot ping eye twos...should I put new shafts in them? If so what?
First time out and you’re positive on what the yardages should be?
Impressive.
Wish you would have included a close up of the back of the clubs so I had more information on the year and grooves.
Fabulous video Gabe.
Thanks Mario, that was a lot of fun to make
I have always loved the Ping Eye 2s but I honestly think its a tragedy that the Tommy Armour 845s from the same period (while still very popular) werent the best seller in the time period. I thought they looked better and to my swing were a smoother iron. Less chunky and a bit less offset.
Ive played the p790s, the p770s and the ping i230s
Then, for the fun of it i bought some eye 2s, I played according to loft not according to Iron and dropped 6-8 strokes a game right away, these will be in my bag forever
I still have a set of these sitting the garage with the Memphis steel shafts. Might break them out for my next round after seeing this video
How much did you pay for the set of you don’t mind me asking?
This is a very good video. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m still gaming a set of Ping Eye 2+ BCCU irons - just incredible irons!
How about re-shafting those irons with a modern shaft fit for you and doing another video comparing the irons and results?
Have these with the copper finish. They are about 40 years old! Usually them as part of a rotation I do. 😊. I always think Ping irons feel pretty good.
Nice! What are the clubs are in the rotation Paul?
@@LetsPlayThru oh so many as I buy second hand. JPK 919 forged at present, Ping Zing 2, Ping G5’s, Mizuno T Zoid comp ez and Wilson Launch Pads. I am very experimental! Got some old XXIOs coming! Love your enthusiasm Gabe. PS I always change the grips!
Mizuno T Zoid comp ez - nice
Bought a set of beryllium ping eye 2 last year ! Its brilliant! On course performance just as good as my costco calloway edge clubs
Oh I'd love to try those coppers out. Congrats
I bought some Ping Eye 2s 1iron through Pitching wedge for $20 earlier this year. They have been so much fun to play.
Whoa!!! That’s a serious steal!
I have 2 sets of Eye2's. My white dots are so old it says patent pending. I have 1-L wedge
My dad bought me my eye 2s red dot in 1990......never played anything else and haven't found anything better either. Best clubs ever made
they feel buttery i played em most of tthis year. i got 2 birdies in a row last year when i tried em and that never happens so i rocked em for most of the year.
Just bought a set of green dot, paired them with the Taylormade Stealth2's. Watch out!!
Great video, also looking sharp!
Many thanks!
My buddy plays these as his regular set! I just bought a set of forged Ben Hogan Apex Edge 2001 or so!
Oh that's a sweet deal!
I live in Tampa too…did you say that Edwin Watts is out of business?
The company is not out of business, but the Tampa location closed because they could not renew the lease. They are hoping to open again next year in a new location.
From late 1990's into early 2000's I played Ping Eye 2 with ZZ Lite Cushin shafts. I've bought and sold at least 8 sets of clubs since then. And I can still fondly remember the feel and performance of the Eye 2. Though I would not return to the club over my current set of Honma TW / World with graphite shafts. Newer technology does offer better performance.
Love all three sets of Honma irons that I own.
@@SONOMA_VALLEY_TOM I have two sets with steel and one with Vizard graphite.
The steel shafts work better for me as well.
These are still legit. The Ping Eye2 and Taylormade R7 changed the game.
I've been wanting a set of those for a while
To complete the 80's trip you need some Titliest Balata's for the ultimate feel.
Haha, definitely. Good call
@@LetsPlayThru Then you'll know how good you're hitting it😅or how badly🤣
I bought a set of ping eye 2 black dot 1-Lob for $75 last year really good clubs hit the 1 iron 275 yards
That’s a sweet deal, congrats
@@LetsPlayThru thanks and thanks for the response
Great vid
thank you
Always regrip them. Keep a set myself because they were the best selling iron at one time
This is the only classic club that Ping still sells. The Eye 2 Plus has a bit more distance. I think that they have sold 500K sets?? The ISI S is even better, not the K the S .
Still prefer my Macgregor custom 985's. I found the offset on Pings not pleasing to my eye.
I love my ping eye 2 coppers . 2 through pw in a whole bag of clubs at a garage sale for 60 dollars. Sold rest of clubs for 175. I play my best rounds with them.
damn, that's one hell of a deal!! I'd love to get my hands on the copper version
Still great irons, even after 4 decades. I still see them in peoples bags around here. I've thought about grabbing a set also.
Crazy stuff!
