Hello I'm Dave from Scotland. Enjoying your club reviews. Purchased Takoma 101 (4 to PW + SW) a couple of months ago. Very pleased with them. Thanks for your efforts of keeping us informed. Happy New Year
Thanks Gabe great job on the rating of these clubs. I have to thank you for something you would never know! I have watched all of your videos recovering from Cancer that was caught early. You made my chemo process smooth and I lived my golf through you and your enthusiasm just rubbed off on me. I am a low handicap player and am back just now after this missed season getting ready for 2024. I bought the Takoma's due to your in dept reviews and comparisons and love my irons. I also added the Titleist TRS because of you and can't thank you enough for the great info and the impact you had on my recovery process. I am cancer free and still building myself up but you should know that you touch your audience in many different ways so I had to give you a shout out and thank you from the heart. I can't tell you the impact you and your site had on me and the pure enjoyment of your videos! Thank you! You're a really good person and your sites a main stay of mine! Love ya Gabe!
Got my 101s this week and they were 10x better than what I ever expected, feel and sound is amazing, forgiveness is also crazy. Absolutely love them well worth it!
I actually bought the 845 max irons after watching your review and love them. Silver scots were great in the day, these are so much more forgiving. Thanks for your reviews.
Picked up the Takomo 301 cbs a few months back and I am so happy that I bought them! I have a feeling Takomos prices will not always be this cheap since they have made such a big name for themselves in such a short time. Great irons!
I just bought the Takomo 101 irons about three weeks ago. They are truly amazing. I have played 7 or 8 rounds, shot from 71-78. I did just buy the heads. I get tendinitis using steal shafts. I bought some fujikara speeder shafts and built them myself. Have a friend that wants me to build him some. Nice review, excellent club.
Everyone always says these are such a budget option but to me 570 after tax and shipping really isn’t that budget it is $80 per club so I really don’t know if it’s a better option, for example I found a set of 2020 p770 for 400 on fb marketplace
Love it, and I agree as I have the Takomo 101s in the bag, they are awesome and glad that through watching your videos I was introduced to them, awesome feel, great sound, amazing forgiveness.
I play Cleveland irons that are a couple years old, but I absolutely love them. Would have loved to see how the newer Cleveland Launcher Max irons would match up to these others.
Found the Head Irons on Ebay after looking everywhere for a week! You were right about being "hard to find". Thanks for the tip! I was surprised to see how well they did in your shoot out against the Paradigms.
I was glad to see the Wilson D9s on the list, and I can attest to their quality and playability for high-handicap golfers. I especially like that you can get these in different shaft types and flex. That is especially helpful for both seniors and women. I would have considered the Tocomo brand, but they aren't offered in graphite or senior flex shaft. Thanks for an excellent review; I love your channel and appreciate all the work that goes into it. Happy New Year to you, and I look forward to more of your videos in 2024.
Nice, thorough review. I'm glad you included the Golfworks stuff. I would like it if you reviewed other models for different categories. In my opinion, they have the broadest, most affordable line of DTC forged irons and wedges. Now that Hogan is back, please consider including them. I play the Icon/Ptx pro, and the feel is as good as it gets. I also owned the Maltby TE's, and they were excellent. The Hogans use a slightly softer forging, and I noticed a very slight difference when I hit them side by side, but very happy with either.
I would like to add that for left handed golfers, many of these brands are near impossible to get. For instance,Giga golf will flat out not make you a set until the winter months ????......I actually tried to buy a set of Wilson D9 irons also and simply could not do it. Finally,Takomo will not only sell you LH 101's( some other of their model 200 and 300 series only available in RH)but let you customize the length, lie, shaft, andgrips. I am awaiting my clubs as I write this. Thanks for a fair, balanced and thorough review.
So happy and excited to see a content creator who is reviewing Maltby. Would love to see ts3, ts4, ts1-IM, TE+. They have some great clubs out right now!
@ugafan3 in case you haven't seen some of the other messages, Gabe will be reviewing the TS1-IM's next. Unfortunately Maltby doesn't send out clubs for review like the others do so a bunch of us have rallied and are lending him sets of clubs to finally represent some Maltby. Hopefully he'll be able to get the TS3's after the IM's, and then TS4's but Gabe's also crazy busy and it might not allow for everything. We know that Maltby has the most extensive lineup of any of the DTC's. Stay tuned!
@@paulmcgee1867 exactly. All the irons have great reviews, but I was between KE4MAX and STi2 and wasn't sure which would be best. Ordered the KE4Max and we'll see how they are when they get here.
Love to see the Maltby's on here! Hopefully you get to try out some of the other line! Even if you try them and sell them you will like them. Maltby's are under rated. I tried a 7 iron of the MAX and STi2 and I am building a set of TS3's. Fantastic clubs for the price. Thank you for your reviews.
I bought the sub70 TAIII and love them for the price. You can totally customize them with shaft, lie and grip. Many of these, you can't get them fitted.
If you liked those ke4 max irons from maltby just wait until you try the TS line the TS1 IM are amazing irons but they also have an amazing deal on the 1st gen TS1 irons going for 40 dollars per head I think they would be a great contender to go up against the 101t since they are the same lofts.
I just bought a set of Irons and wedges from a company called "Logical One". They had a great Christmas deal so I gave them a shot and I really like them. They have blades and cavity backs with a couple shaft and ferrule options starting at $600. You can also buy the components.
I told myself before I press play on this video, if you listed Takomo 101 in your top 3, I would pull the trigger and buy them tonight, just in time for my birthday. Watched it all the way through, and gosh darn it…you listed #1 😅
Great videos. I just started playing golf and the videos are great. Would you do a video for used clubs on the same price range or are we better off buying cheap off brands?
Glad to see the TA 845 on your list, I bought a set last season and I’m glad I did! I was using old set of Calloway big Bertha’s with R flex true temper steel shafts. The TA’s have senior flex carbon fiber shafts, which better suit my slower swing speed!
Gabe...Hppy New Year to you...Just wanted to mention that Ben Hogan Golf is back in business and have some great models to fit all handicapers...On line and direct only sales...
Thanks Gabe, great review. Based on appearance and the loft/lie specifications, it looks like several of the iron heads (i.e., Takomo, Caley and Sub 70) are produced at the same forgery -- probably from somewhere in China. What separates them is the extent to which you can customize the shafts and grips for a modest upcharge. Certainly offer great value for the mid-higher handicap golfer!
You are 100% on the money. Great review, and looking forward to picking up some of these quality, consumer friendly, clubs. My buddy bought p790 and after seeing your review feels totally ripped off.
I just started and I really enjoy your videos. For someone that had been in the industry a while have you heard of the company Merchants of Golf? I purchased a set of the Mg28’s and wanted to see what your opinion was.
Another great comparison vid. I think you have come to get better at these with every vid you make. Question: did you find any problem with controlling the distance of the pitching wedge in the hollow back irons?
This is the by far the best review/breakdown I've seen so far on DTC brands. For my next set of irons, and first I've ever bought new, it can be hard to decide which DTC brand to go with. I looked at Takomo, Caley, Sub70, and Maltby. They're all priced close to the same, reviews are all good, and look similar so it can be hard to decide which brand to go with for a long time! Although there are other similar brands out there, it seems Takomo just does it the best. PGA Tour player Wesley Bryan also gamed the Takomo 301CBs in 2023, so they must be doing something right! Liked and subscribed 👍
You have to try out the Maltby TS3 and TS4 irons. The TS4’s are a very forgiving blade and the TS 3’s are a players cavity. I play them with SteelFiber shafts and they are butter.
Hey Gabe, I know this video has been out for a while, however, I watch your videos & some others as well. I have been looking for the best Game Improvementy club for me. I have considered all of the same factors that you have mentioned in your videos, i.e., price, options, etc. As of last week (Sept/2024) I just ordered the Tacomo 101's. Their online fitting tool was dead on with the fitting I got from a major retailer. For me, it came down to the Wilson DynaPowers, Tacomo's, & the PXG XCOR 2's. But watching your video & others it just seemed that they were perhaps the best Bang for the Buck! Their website was easy to navigate and their available options (lie, loft, shafts, grips, etc.) were terrific. I hope to get them soon and I will let you know how they turn out. Thanks for everything you do.
I bought the TA 845 max irons after this review and I must say your review is spot on. These are probably the best irons I've ever hit. I've got a set of Mizuno 923's in the bag and I hit the 845's better believe it or not.
Ive had the PXG 211 for three years now and love them. I told my friend to by the XCOR 2 version and he loves them too. I was shocked at how forgiving they are as had been using perimeter weighted clubs for a long time. And the shafts are high quality too. The reason you think they are the longest in the test is primarily due to the fact that they are hollow core. You get a trampoline effect with them as the face flexes more than a solid iron. Mine were at least a half club longer than my previous comparably lofted clubs. Think Ill buy the upscale ones next. Shocked that a top tier manufacturer could come out with such a superb bargain line club. And they were packaged beautifully too.
Really great video! I bought the Callaway Edge set last year for $500 and have been very happy since I don't play much. I'm curious what you think of the irons included in that set vs what's on this list. What rank would you put them?
Totally agree with you on the Takomo 101’s. I’ve played them this entire year and they not only play/feel well, they’ve held up really well. I play at least once a week and they still look great.
I just ordered my set today. I ordered heads only and plan on getting them fitted to me at my local golf shop. I will say, I was a little weary due to not seeing many long-term reviews, but I'm glad to see this one!
Gabe, I just ordered the Takomo 101 ‘s a couple days ago. $350 for the heads 4-PW since I already have shafts for them…can you believe that?!?! So pleased to get your endorsement on those sticks. Let’s see how going super forgiveness on the irons will impact my handicap. HNY!
Love it, love it, love it. Fabulous video for those of us who spent $1500 + on a set of irons, it is great to see a playable selection of budget irons.
Nice list. I've always wanted to build a full set of irons. I've been playing JPX hot metal Pros as my main irons. I decided based on looks and price to buy the Takomo 101s heads only, and put them on senior graphite shafts. Long story short the 101 are now my "regular" iron set. I love the look feel and performance (forgiveness) is better than my Mizunos!!! I can see why they would be your number 1 rated "inexpensive" clubs. For me they are the best irons I've ever used... (I did use the same graphite shaft I play in my Mizuno clubs) so my comparison is really heads vs heads... Not bad for inexpensive irons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the Takomo
Nice list, it would be interesting to see how the top couple sets stack up against Taylormade M4 and Callaway Matrix. Maybe even the Cobra F-Max to see how big name brands compare at a similar price point.
Love your #1. I am using a set of WS D7 Forged which I bought new for a used price when the D9 Forged came out. I liked the D7 Forged better and, even though I traded in my previous set of Pings I walked out for $599 4-PW and that included regripping in my spec. I am currently using them due to winter conditions (colder and softer). I have Mizuno JPX 923 Forged for the summer (warmer and firmer) but I would get rid of the Mizunos before I get rid of the Wilsons.
I have the 845’s and have been playing them for 2 years now and love them. Wanting to switch it up so I ordered the takamo 101s now that I’m stringing the ball better. Super stoked to see them at the number 1 spot.
Great review as always! I played the 101s last year and your assessment is spot on! The feel of the clubs is incredible. One item of note, I do pull the higher irons quite a bit left (due to the offset). I’m thinking about the 101T but would like your input on any notable differences in the feel?
Hoping to see reviews for Maltby TS3, TS4, and TS1-IM irons this year. The new adjustable 3, 5, and 7 woods will be out in a couple of months according to Britt. The Ke4 TC and Max drivers are a great value, too. Maltby clubs as a whole should be dominating the DTC market, but they don't go out of their way to do social media marketing. GolfWorks is under the DSG umbrella, and I would love to see them phase out Tommy Armour in favor of Maltby clubs.
I’m a club maker hobbyist and source most of my parts from Golfworks. The major drawback for me personally with their irons is head shape. Their shape just doesn’t fit my eye. But that’s very personal. I have no doubt that their forged heads are very soft feeling based on feedback I’ve read over the years. If they could just make an iron with thinner/rounded top line, and minimal offset I would definitely give them a shot.
I had a Takomo 101 set for couple years. I loved the clubs. Only reason I sold them is I wanted to give one length set a try. Sold them to my friend who is enjoying the Takomos.
Great video! You showed some brands I haven't heard of before but now I'm intrigued. I myself bought a set of Takomo 101s and I haven't been disappointed with them.
Very thorough list. Thank you! I would like to see the MacGregor MT86 and Ben Hogan ptx pro irons now that they're back. Have you tried the Sub 70 699 V2? Now that you've tested the maltby tsi 1m where would they be on this list? Thank you for your great research and reviews.
It's got to be pretty cool to be able to review all of these different clubs! The tacomo look so good! I swear I'vd seen another set of maltbys that looked closer to the p790s
Great vid.. I have Miura 201/301(4,5) combo set but recently I have lost consistency and distance, not getting any younger! (59). I thought about Tkm 101s but am nervous of the thick top line , I would like to see them ,through the set , behind the ball. I played of 5 , now 13!
I bought a set of Takomo 201's last year. I liked the performance but the top line was a bit thick for my liking. What I think the direct to consumer companies should do is send demo's to the PGA Super stores, Golf Galaxy and Club Champion. That way people could look at them and test them. If they don't like the shafts offered, they can just buy the heads. Thanks for all you do. For me personally, I will buy what works, regardless of brand or price since I will be keeping the irons for a couple of years. Clubs are the cheapest thing in golf when you consider how much you pay per year to play.
I got the Takomo 101T irons in October and I have been blown away with their forgiveness and workability. I can't wait for spring/summer golf so I can see how the distance compares
1st time watching , loved this test session ! Some of these companies I've not heard of , but will be doing alot more research on , especially the Tokomo brand , very intriguing !
Oh no… all this maltby talk here in the comments sounds like I’m going to be explaining to the wife why another set of irons just showed up at the door…
Thanks for the review, Gabe. I’ve been considering the Takomo 101’s for a few months and I found one comment you made interesting. You mentioned the feel of the Takomo’s is better than the similar hollow body versions tested. Do you believe that’s due to the type of shaft installed in the Takomo’s? I ask because I’d want to purchase the 101 heads only, and then install a set of Aldila graphites that currently work well for me. Would I be making a mistake by not purchasing an assembled set that may have been matched based on component testing? Or, do you feel the component head alone is the major contributor to the feel you’ve experienced?
You also gotta get your hands on a set of the new Macgregor MT-86 irons that where designed from the ground up by Austie Rollinson so you know the performance matches with how amazing they look.
How would you rate the irons? The old grenade 2 driver was absolutely insane and sounded so good imo. I got away from even thinking about the irons when I tried a driving iron from them and hated it (stupid idea anyway) but I still miss that older style grenade 2 driver that thing was awesome and the only driver I could hit dead straight
Got my Stealth HDs for 799.00 and they are really easy to hit and added height and lenghth to my game. I have 2 bad hips so I need all the help I can get. Last round on holes I would hit a hybrid I hit 6 and 5 irons and hit the green. Def an ego and confidence booster when playing with the guys.
My experience with BT is they are decent for the money, if you like your clubs heavy. I did not like the wedges. They was very little feel with them. and the woods didn't live up to the hype. The irons were OK, but nothing to rave about.
If you are in USA you can visit Sub 70 in the small town of Sycamore, IL just west of Chicago and get fitted with their simulator studio. They will help you select the optimum clubhead, shaft and grip. They will then build the clubs at their factory in Sycamore and ship the clubs to you.
Had my bag stolen last August. PXG was running a $99/ea sale on last gen 0211. Ended up buying 5-W + Gap + Sand (56). Had them bent a bit weak (higher loft), but I'm still up one club in length over my (traditional loft) Mizuno HMBs, higher spin and better descent angle. Was fitted w graphite shafts at the Scottsdale store.
I started with a second hand set of Titleist DCI 822 OS clubs. Those, even second hand, are the best beginners clubs imo. You can still find many sets that are barely used too. Those clubs even hold up to today's irons

Great job Gabe. Very informative video as many of us move toward budget clubs. I'm definitely considering Takomo for future purchases.
Totally agree with you on the Takomo 101’s. I’ve played them this entire year and they not only play/feel well, they’ve held up really well. I play at least once a week and they still look great.
I just ordered my set today. I ordered heads only and plan on getting them fitted to me at my local golf shop. I will say, I was a little weary due to not seeing many long-term reviews, but I'm glad to see this one!
very helpful, thank you. YOur videos and info are excellent content and will guide in my purchase of my first set of new clubs.
Yes!! More Maltby please.
These are some really good reviews on budget irons.
Looking forward to you reviewing more Maltby clubs. I love my TS1 irons but would be interested in seeing you review the new TS3 irons.
TS1 IM up next
@@LetsPlayThruawesome!!! I hope you're amazed as I was
Gabe, I just ordered the Takomo 101 ‘s a couple days ago. $350 for the heads 4-PW since I already have shafts for them…can you believe that?!?! So pleased to get your endorsement on those sticks.
Let’s see how going super forgiveness on the irons will impact my handicap.
HNY!
I think you are going to love them, congratulations 🍾
Great video. I’ve just purchased tokomo 101 and am waiting delivery so here’s hoping I love them too
Love it, love it, love it. Fabulous video for those of us who spent $1500 + on a set of irons, it is great to see a playable selection of budget irons.
I would be interested in your evaluation of the Adams Idea irons that can be direct ordered.
Keep up the good work.
Just bought the Wilson d9 forged and they are absolute class would highly recommend
Thank you so much for ALL your videos. Waiting for your video review on the SMT 579
Great review ! Is Takomo also among the most forgiving iron set on this list
Yes
I have the 845’s and have been playing them for 2 years now and love them.
Wanting to switch it up so I ordered the takamo 101s now that I’m stringing the ball better. Super stoked to see them at the number 1 spot.
I'd love to see a review of the Snakeyes 685x irons. The standard package is now priced at $367 with customization available.
Great review as always! I played the 101s last year and your assessment is spot on! The feel of the clubs is incredible. One item of note, I do pull the higher irons quite a bit left (due to the offset). I’m thinking about the 101T but would like your input on any notable differences in the feel?
Great video Gabe! For my money the Tour Edge Hot Launch series is also fantastic. 😊
@mariofonseca9267 have you checked out the TS line? All the new 23 TS line up have a great shape, top line and barely any offset
I had a Takomo 101 set for couple years. I loved the clubs. Only reason I sold them is I wanted to give one length set a try. Sold them to my friend who is enjoying the Takomos.
Thanks for the information. Very well made video!
Glad it was helpful!
Spot on! Great video thank you for all the great detailed information
I'm a Marine Corps vet and I was surprised to find that Stix ALSO offers a veterans discount!
that’s great to hear 🙌
Great video! You showed some brands I haven't heard of before but now I'm intrigued. I myself bought a set of Takomo 101s and I haven't been disappointed with them.
How are they still after 3 months?
Some people complain about the bad turf interaction what is your thoughts on that as well
Looking for my first set that was not from Goodwill and this has really helped.
Just ordered the Takomo wedges, picking between the 101s and 101ts next
I got the PXG 0211XCOR2 for $75 a stick on sale from PXG! Thanks
What do you think about 201?
Appreciate the review 👏Always honest and fair.
Nailed it! Takomo's are the bomb.
I love my giga one length irons. My buddy plays the cobra one lengths and i like the feel of the gigas more than his cobras.
Really good irons.
Another great year of content Gabe! Well done!!
1st time watching , loved this test session ! Some of these companies I've not heard of , but will be doing alot more research on , especially the Tokomo brand , very intriguing !
Thanks for checking the channel out!
any thoughts on Bombtech Irons? Great review. Not aware of some of those brands. Thanks
I would love to see you review KZG forged irons. Especially their forged cavity back irons
Do you think the Tommy Armours 845 are as good as taylormade sim 2 max?
You also gotta get your hands on a set of the new Macgregor MT-86 irons that where designed from the ground up by Austie Rollinson so you know the performance matches with how amazing they look.
Would you recommend the Takomo 101s or the PXG 0211 with military pricing?
Well of those two I ended up gaming the Takomos, so they would take it by a nose for me personally.
Great question. 👍
@@LetsPlayThru thank you very much for replying and the great reviews you do; I just subscribed.
good list but how about Bombtech Golf? budget clubs usually on sale and have lots of different club offerings.
I play a full set of Bombtech and absolutely love them. Great customer service too.
Just ordered Takomo 101 heads going to get fitted as soon as they come in. Been rocking stick Mizuno JPxs since 2010 so we’ll see how it goes
Any chance you’ll do a budget review on Strata’s?
Never played them but would really like to see how the Ben Hogans perform after reopening. Maybe one day you can make that come to life!
I have the D9 firged irons, absolutely love them
Got my Stealth HDs for 799.00 and they are really easy to hit and added height and lenghth to my game. I have 2 bad hips so I need all the help I can get. Last round on holes I would hit a hybrid I hit 6 and 5 irons and hit the green. Def an ego and confidence booster when playing with the guys.
Good list just wondering what you think of the bombtech irons?
I’m not a massive fan of the Bombtech stuff TBH
Oh that stinks David, sorry to hear. Glad to hear that new set is treating you well though.
I started with a second hand set of Titleist DCI 822 OS clubs. Those, even second hand, are the best beginners clubs imo. You can still find many sets that are barely used too. Those clubs even hold up to today's irons
Did you consider Adams Idea? 5-A, 7 clubs this holiday were on sale for 399 or $57 per club. Nice clubs.
Me too. Love em.
