I was working for Wilson as a production engineer and actually built these clubs. We made 5 of them at our plant in Tullahoma, Tn. I sent 4 to the headquarters in Chicago where John picked out one to play. I STILL HAVE THE ONE I KEPT. NO IT IS NOT FOR SALE. It is a very playable club and I have hit it a few times. It is now put away and is a great story for me.
A lot of people caddy so they can play golf for free. And nobody wants a caddy who doesn’t know the game inside out. A lot of caddies are as good as the club professional.
I once played 9 holes with a guy who only had 3 clubs. He had a zero iron, 9 iron, and a putter. I was a 10 handicap at the time and long story short he beat me by 3 strokes. It was a crazy day to say the least.
My brother in law played on the Nike for a few tourneys before joining the Marines (and played for the Marines) and he carried a custom Merit 1 iron. That thing was like hitting a boulder with a hockey stick. He could shape it out to about 260. It was madness.

Long irons especially off the tee are severely underrated. I love my 2 iron off the tee which I get about 220 to 245 yards. I am sad to say not really much far behind my playing partners using their drivers.
Learning to play golf in the late 60s then high school golf late 70s one irons were quite common, I carried one for years my dad called it the stroke saver, for when you driver went bad. In highschool and college it was always in my bag. My favorite club was my ping 2 wood. When lynx made the black cat the one got replaced with a 2 iron.
In the 90s I found my dad’s old golf clubs that he played while he was in his 20s (he’s almost a hundred years old now). I took it to the driving range just for pure curiosity. Apart from harden grips and I believe, super stiff shaft and those tiny driver head which made of real wood. I can’t hit those damn things with any good result. Made me amazed of professional and amateur golfers in the past generations hundred of years ago. Fast forward to a decade or two ago… I tried my son’s brand new driver that’s, ridiculously, as big as a baby’s head. Omg, it’s so easy to use. Golf manufacturers are so great at R&D to make golf much more fun for average players. 3-4 decades ago I know a lot of friends who gave up golf because the slow progress were simply too upsetting for them. The technology does helps a lot these days.
Saw this bad boy in full action as a steward at birkdake in 98......had no driver at all abd just hit this. Got on the 16th, with Mark calc and hit 3 unbelievable shots with hit.....straight, long draw and power fade.....just fantastic to watch, the strike on the ball and power was something else
I actually purchased a 0 iron in Japan in the early 90's it was made by an unknown (to us in the west) Japanese company. but it was little advantage to the 1 iron I carried
not quite - the Staff RM irons only came out in 1995, and the 0 was developed from there. He was still hitting a 1-iron (Wilson Staff Ultra 45) back in '93

But I'm pretty sure I'm good with saying it was a 1, as the actual irons from the 1993 tournament was auctioned a few years back. I tried to link it but I don't think youtube allowed it. Entire set of irons sold for only $500 at the time, but more importantly it was a 1-iron in the set. I think the 0 came out in 1995, after he had won the Open at St Andrews. I carry a 2 iron...but it looks nothing like that 😂. I remember trying to hit a Cobra 1 iron back in the day. It was the smallest head I had ever seen. I tried hitting it a couple times...the vibration was unreal...it stung like crazy.
25-30 years ago I carried a 1 iron for specific courses that were more narrow. At that time my driver club head speed was 128, so one iron off the tee was not as difficult as for others. I could get it out there about 250 and straight. I couldn't hit it off the deck for anything.
I was playing a money game with daly at MSU two weeks prior to him winning the PGA Championship.................... an example of his length: on a 239 par 3 he hit a 5 iron ( I would hit 1 iron or 3 wood depending on conditions, and on most drives he was 60 yards ahead of me :( Thats with balata balls and lofts nowhere near what are on irons today.
He was a beast back then. I watched him play on what was then the Ben Hogan Tour the season prior. Wish he would have taken his health and fitness half way serious through the rest of his career

I have an adjustable I can set to 0 degree needless to say it impossible to get off the ground but you can get like 100 yards carry due to the spin and if you hit it well

Yea i have a set of tommy armour 845 evo cavity v31s. And i have a 2 iron everybody is always shocked that i have one. Nobody is used to seeing any irons above 3 lmao. Excelent clubs though. Very accurate and true. The 2 is a bitch to hit tho
I have a Jack Nicholas 2 iron. I am terrified not to hit it pure 😂 At 62 with arthritis it pains me to do otherwise.A good hit for me is around 200+ yards
i would love to have this club it is a perfect inbetween club for that one situation you need for distance and spin to have a gum ball the perfect impact landing where it stays in place for medium distance sake but good for the tight shots too.
In 1998 my T-Zoid pro mizuno 1 iron was 15degrees, almost no spin (except side spin 😆) but into a strong wind it would go about 2/3 in the air 1/3 along the ground and down wind it was 50/50 so al long as you knew where the line to land the ball was , it was good of the tee , but compared to my 17 deg PXG 0311 hybrid i use now for the same stuff all these years later , mehh .
As long as your hands are leading the clubhead through impact and your bottoming out in front of the ball, it doesn’t matter what club you’re using. You’ll have consistency in your strikes. Problem is most people suck at golf.
Back in this time I was playing HS golf with 845s and nuking 8 irons over the green from the center of the fairway. Not the best era for clubs but the long irons went a mile.
I have a friend who, 45 years ago, could hit his Ping 1-iron 10-15 yards farther than pros hit their drivers. He was as long as Evan “Big Cat” Williams!
I just bought a Silver Scott 845 0 Iron (14*) but haven't hit it yet but I'm not worried as I can hit old school blade a 1 irons (16*) no problem. Now I have to find this Wilson and buy it to try out but man 12* will be tough. I love collecting these weird clubs. Also just snagged a Mizuno 13* driving iron but havent received it yet. Lets GOOOOO!
Played College golf 91 - 94; had a Ping Eye2+ bent to 12, x stiff titanium shaft. Using school provided Titleist Tour 100 balata balls I could count on 265+ off the tee, 240+ off the fairway. We Had a good enough team to attend state regionals my final year, but the rest of the team focused on liquor and weed, so we did not advance, even when schools we had trounced during the season qualified to state finals. I still have VIP 1 irons, Muirfield 1 irons, Apex II 1 iron, Titleist 1 irons. Due to shoulder injury I can no longer use them, and no one is interested in purchasing them.
a friend of mine was telling me about his one iron...he was in his yard and teed up a ball....he said he hit his one iron pretty good...went inside and poured a cup of coffee and came back out...when he got to where he could see the shot...the ball was just coming down in the field next door.......I was amazed....heres your proof mike....
it's called a "driving" iron for a reason obviously, but most golfers don't need it for accuracy, rather due to the fact that average players (Daly included) couldn't turn a driver over right-to-left not only from a lack of loft but also the pulling motion they use to keep the face open at impact to get the driver off the ground. 12 degrees is more than enough. Micah Morris made a video with Kyle Berkshire on this very subject
On one of the few occasions Daly visited my country, I took the opportunity to watch him play; I really wanted to see him rip his driver. But he'd just started his 'play irons-only' period, so that's what he did, I was very disappointed. He was paired with Norman and Woosnam, and was only just behind their drives with this zero iron.
For whatever reason as a kid learning the game with my father I naturally hit irons sky high and was/am a good iron player never liked the way fairway wood felt looked something in my head couldn’t get past a driver looking head that you can’t tee up so instead of 3-5 woods I’ve always had well I call it a driving iron, a 2 iron 3 iron so fourth

Yeah I have a Mizuno hitogami 1 iron in my set just because it was sitting with old used stuff in a bin and I snagged it for like $20

It was fairly well known that JD didn’t like fairway woods but did like long irons. Also, this was before hybrids were in existence.
pretty sure a 7 wood lines up with more of a 6i/5i distance. a 3hy would carry 60 yards more.

I have an Aussie Lynson 2 iron. When you find the sweet spot😮💨, eventually, it is so fine. Much better than some of my 3 irons.
Second dude up had a beautiful swing. Balance was on point, just came out of it a bit.

As a Jr golfer my favorite club was a 3 iron. Could get distance with accuracy, hit from the tees with that club so often. So I feel it
