Jonah's good at not letting Howard constantly interupt him and take over the conversation
Loved it when they were talking about sinkholes in Mexico on "This is the End" and Jonah ad libbed "Sink hole De Mayo".
That was probably the best line in the movie or at least the most memorable lol I remember that being in the trailer
For some reason I thought that this line was in The Watch
Arnold didn't want to say the now classic line "I'll be back".. sometimes writers do know better
I don't think he's arguing that they don't. I think he's saying as I've heard other actors say, it's not as fulfilling or enjoyable to stick to the script.
It wasJames Cameron
It was James Cameron

@juraj_b Wow thanks for that hot trivia! Will be great over the holidays when I need to fill silence with facts thst make me seem knowledge about something and superior then everyone else
Ad-lib is fine for brainstorming funny/alternate dialogue, but what I hate is when it becomes obvious filler.
There are some films (usually Judd Appatow style comedies) where it's painfully obvious when the actors
are going off-script and indulging in their improv routine.
To me, that's more of an editing issue. There's plenty of great things that come out of those improvs, but knowing what to keep and what to leave out is key.
Must be fun for directors, trying to herd all the actors and their different 'styles.'
They know what they're getting into when they hire the actor.
The Coens apparently didn't 😄
It's not. Trust me. It's also a nightmare for the editors as well
If you cast an improv actor and expect a Shakespearean performance the problem is you.
@@shane864 Well, if robin Williams could adapt to different styles then so can these other fools
Martin Scorsese demonstrated this in The Last Waltz
"a good friend of mine named Sam Rockwell" as if Sam hasn't been a household name for decades lol
Jonah....your killing me 🤣

@@Aaliyahchannel2024 spell check 😅...really?....no.....
We need you back in studio Howard, so much more intimate. Waiting and wishing
Don't listen anymore. He's not in the studio? Where is he now?
They're PAYING you to learn your lines bro. Learn them!
You care too much about an interview from 2016
It's really up to the director, some don't want that. I get that Tarantino pays people to read the dialogue, but he wants to be fully in control of all things in his art. He's the writer, director, producer, etc. Scorsese wants actors to fill in the shoes of THEIR character, Tarantino wants actors to play HIS characters. It's a different approach, both valid since both are generational directors of our time.
“Anyone bring any extra bags?”
"no! Nobody brought an 'extra bag'!"
@@mortytheorgre1500 he is just asking.
"I think we can all agree, the bags were a good idea."
That’s my bag, baby
Don't ask me or my wife for none
Strikes me as he wants to standout and do his own thing, rather than serve the movie.
"Any decent actor could have said those lines".
Seems a bit egotistical, especially in a Coen Brothers' movie.
It was just a word, he wasn't improving. Many actors make such mistakes
Sam Rockwell owes me 100 bucks. He dipped on his bill when i was serving him. Im not grumpy;)
You're lucky it wernt Cordon mate!
Bs. You turn up and say your lines. The writer pored over that dialogue for months maybe years. And you're going to turn up, a small cog in the machine and "add your bit"?? Learn your lines, perform them creatively and go home.
Freestyle if you’re a pro ala Larry David. But freestyle rarely beats honed out thought. It’s a bit childish, in a “I don’t eat broccoli” way.
I was thinking of the Coens before the interview started lol
Sam Rockwell is one of the most under rated actors ever
Some directors are also writers and some are only directors. Martin Scorsese allows actors to improvise because Scorsese is not a writer, he is not "married" to the words. Tarantino and the Coen brothers are writers, so they are passionate about the dialogue being verbatim.
Just different styles for different reasons.
I hear many actors talking about how they adlib their lines. All actors on board. Robin Williams probably adlibed most of his lines as well
Not in his dramatic films.
The difference was in many of his scenes (especially in the Mork and Mindy show) they wrote something along the lines of “Robin adlibs” and let him go nuts. And that was in his comedies, not serious dramas.
In comedies, it might not be as big of a deal, but the more serious the film is, the more likely they should learn their lines.
@@christiancrocetti9940 This show This Is Us and Sterling said he used to adlib all the time. That was a drama series
Damn he’s got baby hands 😮
Yes, you are apart of someone elses painting! so don't bring your own damn paint.
Well, “and” & “or” are pretty different words and can mean something very different.
I can see where he's coming from, but if you're hired for a part and the director has expectations to stick to the script, that's why you're being paid.
Some directors are what I call “toy soldier” directors - you are their plastic toy soldier and they are going to manipulate you at their discretion as they play make believe.
Kubrick is a good example.
That's basically the job of all directors, to direct the actors to bring about of a vision of art
I ate 8 pieces of chicken wings today.
👍proud of you🙂
where they good?
HAPPY 39TH BIRTHDAY JONAH HILL !!!
Not a Jonah Hill fan.
You're not?? Oh no! He's going to be so disappointed when he finds out
I use to be. Now he just seems to be a nutcase.
Extremely cool interview. Bravo to all
I won't be sad when he finally dissapears from the entertainment
*Jonah Hill on the directors that don't allow him to eat hot dogs on set*
Justifying himself as a slacker. Ego maniac
And Atticus Ross
Wish him and McConaughey swapped screen time in Wolf of Wall Street
Jonah was the best part of wolf of Wall Street
Excuse me?? After Leo. I know it's a cliche to credit the lead, but he was outstanding and so was Jonah

So, very little respect for the craft of writing.
You could say the same about Scorsese then
so, he doesn't take direction and thinks that he knows better than those great directors. got it
He's a great actor and improviser. Also the director isn't some omnipotent god, no artist should ever claim to be above suggestions and critique.
🎯
Misleading.
Jonah putting Tarantino and the Cohen's in their places, competing with Scorssese
Scorsese doesn’t write his movies so makes sense he is less particular about the lines.
@Deep Cut Reactions that is the point I was making
@Deep Cut Reactions Scorsese did help to write Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Age of Innocence, Casino, SIlence and Killers of the Flower Moon. I guess it just comes to down the different directional styles.
Scorsese is nothing compared to Tarantino and the Cohen's.
Marty 👍🏻
Wow
Na, I'm gonna have to go with a serious actor
I am surprised JH got this far in his career. The fact that he is not well educated shows
