my fish has been rotting to death slowly for a month now, i thought it was dead so just bought another one. When I got home and tried to remove the fish it was still wiggling, and alive. But they can’t even swim to the top without falling back down. I’m so sad I didn’t check on it earlier and made it go through that pain this long

I work for a chain petstore (legally cannot tell you which one) and I found out they use BAKING SODA to euthanize fish. Because I’m in charge of animal care, I stopped that shit immediately and went behind management’s back to instruct all other animal care employees to use clove oil. No animal deserves that, even if it’s “just a fish”. Fish have feelings and feel pain too.

As much as I love fish, and keep them as my own, it’s been scientifically proven fish do not feel a conscious pain like humans. It’s primarily instinct and reaction. This doesn’t mean you treat them like garbage and stuff, but I would go as far as saying “they have feelings too”

Good job!! Pet store chains are notorious for this stuff. My friend works @ petsmart & we recently caused a huge stink about the hermit crabs not having adequate conditions (painted shells, no sand - all coconut fiber substrate, having to do surface molts which is torture for them). It worked for the local stores, but not store wide, grrrrr. Frustrating.

My beta named Reginald that I’ve had for over a year has pretty severe dropsy. I’ve tried to treat him for a long time but he just keeps getting worse. I know dropsy is very hard to treat and it’s most likely that it won’t go away, so I’ve decided to euthanize him. This video is super helpful, thank you. This decision has been really hard for me, but it’s been really sad to see him being so still in the corner of his tank when he used to be so lively and was a great swimmer. His bloat has gotten really severe and I don’t want him to suffer any longer. I’m going to miss him so much, he’s my fish son and I love him so much. I do feel good about the fact that I gave him a better/longer life than he would have had if I left him in the Meijer I got him from or if he was bought by someone who didn’t know what they were doing. I know he’s just a fish but I really did care for him and I just. He’s a really good fish. I hope he knows I love him :’) I’m going to try and find clove oil today. Hopefully I can muster up the emotional strength to euthanize him today. Sending love to anyone else who is in a similar situation, this is hella hard. 💕
Update: he’s gone now. Rest In Peace, Reginald 💔

I wonder what illness my Betta has?
Hes normally a medium color-tone of pink and turquoise blue.
He still has some pink to him but he's turned mostly pale white. He won't eat and he barely moves.
It started 3 to 4 days ago. He's miserable and I don't know what to do for him.

Chloe Tan Yeah it used to be considered humane due to the fishes lack of reaction, but they've since found the nerves are still very much reactive, the fish just can't move or express it's discomfort due to the cold temperature slowing it's heart rate.

I appreciate this video. I am a new aquarist and each and every creature I take in is very special to me, one of our corydora got really sick and didn't seem like he would make it, for days we treated and checked and tried to feed and nothing. Thanks to this video I was able to quickly and painlessly let my fish rest without doing something gruesome and mutilating to him. I know this video was painful to make but it is necessary information.

My little Fitzy passed about a month ago. He was sick and I debated whether to euthanize him or see if there was any chance he would recover. He was "healthy" for about 5 more months. By healthy I mean alive and eating but stuck at the bottom of the tank and not my normal happy boy. He passed on his own. Love you Fitzy.

I know your pain and I'm so sorry. I had to put a betta down that I rescued, he came from a friend in a very small tank a 1 or 2 gallon glass bowl tank my friends brother no longer wanted him and was going to flush him to get rid of it, the water was so dirty and only an inch or so deep, you could hardly see him and the gunk covered the inside of the glass and everything inside of his tank. he had no filter or heater and he had ick and the water reeked horribly. So I got some water and I heated and cooled it and conditioned it in a large bowl to the same temp as his tank after I used an old thermometer with the mercury inside (yes it was unbroken and safe to use my grandmother took care of her things lol), he was literally so lethargic I could physically scoop him up in my hand and put him in the other container. because his water was so shallow I couldn't use a net. I washed his tank with dawn dish soap and extremely hot water I got rid of his gravel all together and rinsed new gravel for him and once his tank was cleaned and everything he came with I went and got him the medicine he needed. He lived with the previous owner for a few years, then with me for another two years. I knew he was still sick as he lived with me, and I did all I could to make his life quality. I used different youtubers that kept and bred bettas as well as online sites that were trusted, but finally he wasn't swimming, he was laying on his side and was just like Candy Cane, So I did research and got the clove oil. I felt horrible having to do it, but I'm just glad that now I know he died happy at least. Thank you for all of your videos even ones like these, i feel your sorrow in this time and I'm so sorry, much love to you!

Thank you so much for sharing this video. My Betta that I've had for a little over a year has developed a protrusion on his right side and isn't his normal active self. I've been monitoring him for a week and his protrusion has not gone down, he perches, and he spends more time at the bottom of the tank. I thought it was dropsy and was preparing to euthanize him. But days went by and he was showing to be very responsive he still jumps for food and engages with my fingers. I wanted to allow him to continue living in his tank but feared I was being cruel and selfish. I will now only euthanize if he shows more signs of discomfort and becomes less responsive. I'm am so sorry for your loss. I know you really become quite attached to these little guys and it's always difficult to lose one.

I have a fish suffering from Fish TB. As being a Freshwater Tropical fish disease newly known of, especially in the fish community. Hopefully it has not infected my tank completely, so as I lose my entire personal aquarium fish family. Research this disease as to avoid it, sometimes it’s unnoticed or misdiagnosed. Other times, you get lucky and can save your fish and its tank mates. There is an actual fish vet who has his own channel and has in detail reviewed Fish TB. This video has helped tremendously for sound advice so as to give final relief to my lil Gourami buddy. Thx.

The past year, I’ve struggled a lot with my bipolar disorder and I’m only 16 so on top of Covid it’s just made me very depressed. Floyd has a semi proper tank setup. The only thing he lacks is lots and lots of plants (still has foliage just not real and lots of plants). I will admit I neglected him and honestly it got to a point to where I would call it abuse. I did not mean to do this, and I should have asked for help and I know it but I was scared and embarrassed and my poor boy had to suffer because of my own feelings. I am filled with so much dread and regret and guilt for MAKING him to be live this. He had fin rot and a fungal infection on his tail. I wish he could understand how deeply sorry I am. As I got better, he started to. Then it hit again. I missed water changes and feedings. He suffered all because of me. He got better again and I’ve gotten better and remained better and so did he. Until recently. His fin rot AND fungal infection are both back. I’m so sorry I couldn’t do better for him and I just wish he knew that. I know he’s a little fish who would’ve died naturally in 5 years anyways but he means a lot to me and I failed him:( I let him down so badly. I feel so ashamed to say I love him and then go on to talk about how poorly I treated him. I had to share this with just anybody. I feel so terrible. I might euthanize him tomorrow because I can’t stand to see him suffer because of me anymore. I’m so sorry Floyd. I hope one day you’ll just be completely at peace and ease and you won’t feel the pain I’ve put you in anymore. I am so, so very sorry I let you down.

My wife's giant female koi betta has been suffering from a fin tumor and developed severe dropsy. We lowered the water level, kept the bubbler on, tried the medications we had on hand (we didn't have any better products locally, its almost all thru Amazon), Epsom salt, and almond leaf extract/boiled leaf water. We eventually got some Kanaplex and since then she has received 3 doses....sadly, she has not recovered. I was going to use an ultra-fine insulin needle to aspirate, but I'm too shaky, nervous, scared, so on. This method is all I can do to help her, and I thank you for your information.
    Farewell, Hinode. 💔

Found Sancho gasping at the bottom of the tank when I came home from work today. his fins were nipped up and torn and he's had huge tumors growing for months, despite all research I did there is no good cure for fish tumors. He went blind and I finally couldn't bare to see him suffering any longer. Thank you for this advise, swim in paradise Sancho.

Im debating euthanizing my fish, I don't know yet. He has severe fin rot and I got him a medicine, I tried 2 kinds and I can't see if hes getting better. He's very stressed out and his gills are flared and red, I'm not sure what it is as the nitrates are at 0. He's doing real bad, and I don't know. Hopefully once I finish this treatment he'll be ok, but if he doesn't improve I may have to say goodbye.

Thankyou for being so caring for these beautiful fish. I have noticed that the bright lights dimmed help not stress my bettas out! Maybe something to think about in the future. I try to match their natural habitat to the best of my abilities, even when sick. When they’re sick, I think dimmed lights or even a dark environment helps keep them more comfortable. Just an opinion. Regardless, I really like your set up. You can tell that you truly care for these babies.

I had fish in my early teens (guppies mostly), and one female got dropsy, after giving birth. I was told by some “smart” people that the most humane method was flushing it down the toilet!!! That it would kill them instantly. I didn’t really believe them, but “who was I to argue?”
I felt so terrible afterwards that I donated all my fish to someone I knew and never had any pet fish again, because I didn’t want to experience that again.
I still feel bad about it and I’m 30 now...
However, I just bought a new aquarium, and want to keep fish again. Feel more ready for it now, and I will be having clove oil handy, just in case. :)

My Veiltail "Feather" is doing the same thing Candy Cane was doing here. Laying on his side, struggling to breathe and only occasionally swimming to the surface for air. He's been like this for well over a week now. His water is good (0 ammonia, 0 Nitrite, and 30ppm Nitrate), he's in a heavily planted 10 gallon, so the Nitrates aren't too high. I do a 50% water change every Wednesday. I did try fasting him for a few days and then feeding him 1/4 of a blanched pea. But, he didn't eat it. Then I filled a 1-gallon fish tank with water from his main tank, added 1 tablespoon of Epsom salts and put him in it for 15 minutes in an attempt to make him poop. That didn't work either. I haven't seen any improvement at all. If anything he's getting worse. Am I a piece of crap if I euthanize this fish? Is there anything else I can try first?

I went to a job where the owner didn't seem to give a shit about her Beta fish. I was so pissed and heartbroken. I moved the little guy from the kitchen where some remodeling was happening. The debris from the construction was all over the air and I could clearly see a thin film developing on the surface of the water- despite that I opened the window and placed him right under it. So I moved the little guy to the bathroom down the hall from everything.
Sadly, I couldn't take him with me for obvious reasons. But it hurt so much to watch him just go from being super energetic and swimming in his bowl, to slowly being less active. After I moved him, he improved a bit the next day. I really don't like that home owner.
How dare people like that claim to be all about peace and Buddhism. Etc.. and not care about another living little defenseless critter.
I'm glad people like you exist. People that care so much and have this amount of respect for other living organisms.

thanks for the video, girlie. tough subject. one method that I used that I don't see often is super cooled water.
I've only had to euthanize a fish once and it was when I was relatively new to the hobby and I didn't have the money to get clove oil (or the time, since he went down hill really quickly and I thought it would be more cruel to let him wait until I could get clove oil than to just try and euthanize him at that moment)
basically what I did was use ice and salt to super cool a bath of water. I made an ice and salt water bath and then put a separate dish of water in the ice and salt bath to get cooled. when the water was basically ice cold (but no ice in the dish) I put the fish in. I was worried that it would take long (which is why i didn't do the normal freezing method), but it was only a very short moment of possible discomfort for the fish before he gone. I suggest it for people who can't bring themselves to cut the head off or don't have clove oil. from what I've read of other methods, compared to my experience the super cold water was much more effective and faster

I have to put down my sweet boy smudge. I am so heartbroken. He’s my first fish and he really made me realize how sentient and entertaining such small creatures can be. I’m moving houses and had to transport him 2 hours and the stress of it all as well as his old age and chronic illness put him in the worst shape I’ve ever seen him in. And we have to drive 2 hours again. He’s pale, unresponsive and almost lifeless. I feel so guilty that he has to be in pain and I know that he can’t handle another move. I cant let him keep suffering. I love him so much even though he’s just a fish. He’s the best fish. Soon he’ll be swimming on the other side, not in pain anymore, that’s the only thing left for me to give him.

This is very obviously a hard decision to make, however, I would suggest investing more time in the future. You don't want the fish to suffer, but allowing it to do so for 1-2 days is okay if it means the rest of his/her lifetime of happiness. You obviously know best, but I would just encourage you to explore different options in the future, she looked healthy enough to have a strong recovery.

Thank you for this video...I had a betta for a year during the pandemic. I was a first-time fish owner and could have done a lot better, but he was a little sickly when I first got him. Lately he looked bloated (without pineconing), so I assumed it was constipation and didn't feed him for a few days before giving him a bit of pea. Today he began to pinecone, and his fins are quickly dissolving. I'll probably have to put him down very soon if I don't want him to be in pain. • @allysonb210

Flushing dosnt kill them. Decapitation you know they are dead.

    • @armoredwings4182
      @armoredwings4182 5 років тому

Decapitation severes nerves and is painless.
Flushing a fish isn't humane because the fish is introduced to a lot of chemicals in the water, like chlorine, that are normally removed before it goes in the tank. Chlorine can take days to kill a fish. Not to mention you're throwing a fish into a sewer or septic tank of human waste where the bacteria and ammonia can really hurt the fish before it dies. Also, if the waste is transferred to a river and the fish somehow survives all of that from being flushed, you may now have put an invasive species into an ecosystem where it doesn't belong, and we already have a huge problem with invasive species fish that doesn't need to be added to.
