These poor souls always look terrible sitting in those little cups. I don't know anything about caring for Betta fish but even my untrained self could see these fish were not being cared for properly. Even at a store like Petsmart where they are suppose to know what they are doing the poor fish are in the same terrible conditions. Thank you for saving this beautiful Blue Boy💙
Betta left in jars like that end up with urine burn on their skin and in their gills, which alone can kill them. They are living in their waste and develop fungal or bacterial infections in the burns. They suffer pain and fear just like we do. If you watch this video carefully you will see they also feel happiness and form a relationship with their owner. Betta are very smart and need an environment they can explore. They can be taught tricks. There have been reports of bettas who could come to the owner for a cuddle or pet. I had goldfish who did that. We think because they are cold blooded they are emotionally cold and have fear needs than warm blooded animals. Nothing could be further from the truth.😊
The first time I saw a bunch of bettas in a cup in a chain store I just stood there and cried. WHHY do people insist on doing this? Why are bettas treated so terrible. Even just yesterday I saw a video on a youtube channel who is a manager of Maindenhead (sp?) Aquatics indicate the "beginner" betta fish could be put inside an 8 ltr tank. I have heard this before but I really disagree it is okay to do this. It's so much harder anyway to have such a small tank where water goes bad so fast. Unless people start changing the flow of information that is horribly incorrect about bettas more often than not, the situation will never change. I'm glad you showed what a human heart is capable of achieving. It was uplifting so watch your betta regain his health and spirit. The betta isn't an easy fish to keep in my opinion. Unfortunately most bettas we purchase are not ideally bred and kept. Their genetics make them more disease prone and lessen their lifespans. Yet I have taken a few in from their terrible cup to a decent living situation and watching them grow and regain their color and spirit is the best experience. Thanks for presenting your betta's story and I am glad to know he's going to have a fun and healthy life.
Beautiful story, thank you for saving him! I understand your dilemma about the Bettas in cups. I can't stand that this is an approach, but these little creatures deserve care and kindness. I don't know how this practice will change. But I do love that you saved Jonny! ❤
I'm a little late, but i added a samurai Betta four days ago to a 10 gallon tank that i decided to redo. I've been having issues with him that i think has a lot to do with the stress of acclimating from the tiny cup he was in and being introduced to a much bigger environment, as I'm pretty sure the little dude most likely had never even seen more than a gallon of water in his life. He's eating, so i have hope, really just want to get him acting normal like my other three. As of now, when i do see him, I've noticed one or both of his fins clamped to his side, he lays motionless on the bottom, he'll occasionally swim to the surface for air, then he'll go hide behind the big piece of driftwood in his tank, to which i can't get a view of him so i don't know if he's on the bottom or not but judging by his behavior when i do see him, he probably is. His belly doesn't look as full as I'd like to see, but it's not sunk in neither. I am considering transferring him to a bare enclosure and trying a low dose salt bath to see if it has any effect. I'm hesitant on that though, as he is in a black water environment, which I've heard would pretty much have the same effect as salt, so I'm not sure the salt would do any good or not... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Bless you. This is such an inspiring story. Makes me want to go bring home a betta that has been sitting in a mason jar at my lfs for several months. Hes so stress faded that nobody but me gives him a second glance.
Wow he looks like a jewel toned silk scarf fluttering in the water now! Amazing job bringing him back to glory and health Dani! I'm here from the MOG channel but your aquarium vids are now going to be in my fall asleep rotation. So soothing :D
You folks have a wonderful heart. Once I have my tank set up to received the Betta fish. I will start recusing Betta and give them a chance to live. Thanks for bringing this situation to our attention.👍 God Blessed. 🙏🙏🙏
Oftentimes, if you see a betta that is sick you can ask the manager for a discount or even get it for free, depending on its condition. This gets the betta out of the poor conditions while still cutting their profits. I always ask, even if the fish is just under-colored from stress, and they usually dont care enough to argue (or they agree and hate corporate too), and just give the discount.
Lovely Johnny ❤ I have similar concerns about Bettas not being given the best quality of life, so would love to see how you have tackled this in not supporting animal abuse/lack of care but also helping the fish that need it? Have you managed to successfully keep a Betta with peaceful tankmates such as corydoras? I feel bad that they spend their life alone once hatched ❤
Most breeders (myself included) keep Bettas together until they start showing signs of aggression at a couple months of age. And I've kept most of my pet Bettas in communities with various schooling fish and corys! Just need a decent sized tank and make sure their little fish friends aren't fin nippers. Pygmy corys and micro rasboras like the chilli rasboras are my favorite Betta tankmates.
Hi, well my principal is getting the animal for free, or heavily discounted and the shop owners here will give me a sick fish for free. I don't live in a big country so we don't have big chain petshop stores like in the US, owners do the best they can, but animals get neglected usually by hardship, unexpected events and expenses, or other things related to personal or business issues out of people's control. It's rarely about not caring about the animals, that's why I get the animals for free and owners are happy to give them away. But I can see how in other countries it's due to not caring, so best thing to do is demand animals for free or veavily discounted and feedback on how they are treated.. but again, I can't really talk about big countries, only lived in small ones 😝
Thats a lovely experience. I bought a crowntail betta just fr the same reason.saw them like that in the shop .came home and read about how stressed they r .went back and brought him home along with a couple of goldfishes . He enjoyed being free but fr a short time .he passed away the next day .was similar in colour as yours. Went back ,got a new one and put hin in a big oversize candle holder i guess.,till i got a new tank 2ft and put him along with the container.he is happily going around investigating his surroundings, plants etc.eats well.only have flakes and freeze dried tubiflex and brine shrimp flakes .and guppy feed. Hope he lives a longer life happily .he is blue and maroon named him keshu❤
So I purchased a sick betta a couple weeks ago-clearly has swim bladder problems-he cannot swim straight/ only floats on his side/can’t go down. I fasted him for 4 days then gave him a pea, put aquarium salt in his tank, gave him an epsom salt bath, now I put maracyn in his tank. It’s been 2+ weeks and he hasn’t improved. Is there anything else I should try or would it be more humane to euthanize?
Saw a Galaxy Koi Male Betta at PetCo on Monday fish was being sold for $25 I bought him for $10 my hopes was to help him recover but idk man looking grim I tested his bowl water he was in ammonia was reading at 8.0ppm which is bad I think his gills have been burned from it and not sure what else that water gave him but he's struggle if he can make it through the night I think he might be fine I hopeI dumped all his old water out and put water from my other betta's tank I know he's healthy and has no issues and added to this bettas bowl. If he's not at the bottom then he's at the top like a bubbler not even moving.
You have made a very good job and video is nice . That were your way . O'K . But I am , first all , make a bath with sea salt and some medicine and only then put a new fish in to aquarium with fresh 2-3 days water with indian leaves , Malafix and good temperature. If I see something wrong, the next day do the same bath , only 40-50 minutes
I hate that petstores put bettas in cups but they fight so badly and u can’t make like multiple big tanks for each one but I would have it set up so each betta gets a water change everyday in the cups and fed everyday until they r rehomed it’s either that or stop selling them but everyone always wants a betta fish because they are easy and hardy fish just pop a filter heater and some nice decor and ur done. I just got a betta like this he is yellow like this emoji 😊 and I’m trying to do what your doing he’s happy in his hide 🥰
4/5 litre small tanks should be managable and better than cups also i see that most large chain fish shops r the ones with the most cruel treatment to their animals my local fish shop has their bettas in 5 litre tanks that look clean and much better than the nasty cups

New studies show fish feel pain but only in mouth and gills i dont know if that make it better or worse
Thank you for helping him❤
Such a beautiful story. He looks amazing. Thank you for sharing.💖
I just purchased a sick betta today for the same reasons. This video was very encouraging, thank you! 😊
did it survive?
Update please!
This video made me really happy. Beautiful Betta
Well done! He is beautiful 💙🎉

Rescue a single lucky betta among the crowd of unlucky sufferers who didnt deserve to go thru all that pain?

What a great ending. I always feel bad that they don't have a partner in their tanks, but i guess they are that way. Beautiful colors. Thank you

question: how much pellets do you feed him? I see you use micro pellets.
As recommended for size of tank Salt is good 👍 😊
well done
That’s a great long term tank the treatment tank

My beta fish also looks same like this one but he recovered and bulling other beta 🤣.
If your bettas try to fight each other, you may have to separate them.
wtf
Show him mirror it would be helpful

.. in separate small aquariums instead of cups :) but the world isn’t perfect 🤷🏻♀️
It seems wholesome, but that store bought 10 more the next day with the money. Don't give those people money.
I said I got it for free 🤭
