I miss Petrolia Bowl.
Sad ending to that place.
Great story very well done. One of the narrators, Charlie Whipp, was a good friend of my father George Smith. They shared a love for history and a passion for the quest of knowledge. Charlie was well spoken and a great newspaper man. He did a wonderful eulogy at my Dads funeral! The photo of the foreign drillers in Persia,1908, is one I have not seen before. The gentleman second from the left in the picture is my Great Grandfather Duncan McIntyre. We have one of his original visas, signed in 1905 by the Marquess of Lansdowne guaranteeing him free and unfettered access during his travels to Persia.I gave a copy of the document to the museum in Oil Springs.According to family lore, during his last trip to the area he was seriously injured and given up for dead. His obituary appeared in the Sarnia Observer. He was subsequently nursed back to health by a trained medic and returned to Sarnia many months later.
Strange that your grandfather Duncan ( 16:50 second from left ) had the same name as the railroad tycoon ( Duncan McIntyre 1834 1894 ) who ended up on the board of Canadian Pacific. If I recall, Duncan McIntyre had a nephew named Duncan also... and all of them were related to John Ferguson who built North Bay. Ironically enough, Lord Landsdowne was GG of Canada in 1883 when McIntyre, Worthington, Ferguson and the CP moved lines from Callander to Sudbury Junction. In 1895 Landsdowne succeeded his mother as Lord Nairne. This title had belonged to the Murray in Scotland who had married the Oliphant ( Lady Nairne ) name along the way. Just a curiosity which may not be real... Another Oliphant changed his name to Sandy McIntyre in the process of moving towards the north where he took up a claim next to the Hollinger claim. The Timmins and the McMartin helped Hollinger develop his mine. Meanwhile, Sandy ( Oliphant ) McIntyre ( 1869 1943 ) and his group ( likely Pennsylvania steel wealth ) developed the Porcupine story which was the story of Timmins gold mines. .... or not.... i guess Duncan McIntyre was your maternal grandfather ??
interesting tidbits found here and there that add mystery to the bigger story .. ( His wife and children stayed at home. Duncan became a stranger to them, a guest in his home during his infrequent visits. McIntyre left for Persia in 1905. ) . Gary May book - Hard Oiler... and this from a bio of Lord Strathcona, aka Donald Alexander Smith - ... anxious for a foothold in Persia and for fuel for the British navy. ... In 1895 he acquired Duncan McIntyre's adjacent mansion to use as a guest house........
likely all coincidental... lol
