NASA’s Design for Message Heading to Jupiter’s Moon Europa

- There's a legacy of NASA spacecraft carrying inspirational messages into the cosmos, and Europa Clipper will continue this tradition when it launches in October 2024 to Europa, a moon of Jupiter that shows strong evidence of an ocean under its icy crust. A triangular plate seals an opening in the spacecraft’s vault, which protects Europa Clipper’s electronics from Jupiter’s radiation. The plate will carry a special message into the cosmos.
At the heart of the artifact is an engraving of U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón’s handwritten “In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa,” along with a silicon microchip stenciled with more than 2.6 million names submitted by the public. The microchip will be the centerpiece of an illustration of a bottle amid the Jovian system - a reference to NASA’s “Message in a Bottle” campaign, which invited the public to send their names with the spacecraft.

imagine if you were an alien trying to figure out human communication, and the only thing you find is a list of ONE word in a bunch of different languages. It's like the opposite of a rosetta stone, but even worse because you don't know any of the languages on it.
If aliens found this they might figure some stuff out but they'd always wonder what the point of the audio files on the other side was. If they were really smart they might guess that it was decorative.

And they might use eigenvectors to get a rough map of languages and continents of Earth from the names. Apart from that, I think it is quite incomprehensible.

@j-rich In the lamb book, what? Is that one of those fairy tale books for kids? No, this is about something real, the mission, that is. The naming microchip is really just a product of human ego and vanity. It's negligible compared to the 'intormation,' i.e., data, that will be coming back to us with trillions of bits of never-before-seen information of this new world. That is explorering the Jovian worlds.

That message is terrible and would be basically impossible for any alien life to decipher. Imagine we received one of those and spent hundreds of years trying to decipher their language when in reality its just names, and the audio forms are completely different languages instead of one single on trying to communicate anything of value.

Seems like a waste of money. There is no intelligent life on Europa so this is the equivalent of flushing money down the toilet. I support the mission in general, but we should not just wastefully spend money.

What makes scientists think that alien life would communicate the same way as us. It’s dumb. Humans are the only species on earth we understand. And now we are going out of our way to send some scrap of metal across space to communicate with the possibility of life.
