Then the movie would have been really a disaster jaja But IDK, maybe he works better when he's not directing, he's appearing in a new movie with Greg soon (I think it premieres next year).

low angle shots like the running scene looks like it is going for a cinematic biopic. they should've had a cheeky camera man running around recording every moment of tommy wiseau because that legit is what happens with almost every production. just look up tommy wiseau in la la land.
My biggest issue with the movie is that I read the awesome book (and listened to the audiobook, which is also incredible). The book is an interesting look into the life of a struggling actor in Hollywood from two points of view: Greg and Tommy. The making of The Room is a big part of it, but there is a lot more going on underneath it all. It actually became one of my favorite books by the time I was done with it. Its funny, answers some questions about the making of The Room (while also raising all new ones), but also captures struggling, perseverance, and the trials and tribulations that go hand in hand with that. This movie adaptation felt like it was made just so James Franco could play Tommy Wisseau (which he does quite well) and recreating moments from The Room. This is fun, but by making it a vehicle for expressing fandom for the best worst movie ever made, it also kind of misses the point of the book.
Yes, this is so true it hurts. I have to admit I didn't have high hopes regarding this as soon as it was announced that Franco was directing/starring in it with his brother. It is passably enjoyable, though.
I was extremely disappointed. Having read The Disaster Artist, I got a very definite sense that as time wore on and the shoot dragged out, the people working on The Room were growing more and more resentful of Tommy. Tommy to this day seems so oblivious to the fact that how he sees himself and how others see him are worlds apart. Probably the best illustration of this is when Greg Sestero is offered a small part in a show by that guy who used to be in Malcolm In The Middle. I am not even sure that happened in reality, but one thing that *did* happen in reality was that Greg was getting small dribbles of work here and there, even getting himself an SAG card, when his agent called him and told him that one director who was directing a film he appeared as an extra in responded to a query saying said director did not remember Greg at all. As Greg Sestero explains in the book, saying you were on a film and having people not even remember you were there is a firing offense at talent agencies. Fortunately for him, the agency saw him for the semi-gifted new kid on the block that he was and just quietly warned him that in future, you should only put things on your resumé that you know directors are going to remember you for. In The Disaster Artist According To The Franco Brothers, Sestero wants to take a day off shooting The Room so he can work on his offered role at this project previously described. Somehow, Wiseau talks him into staying on The Room and shaving off his beard. What makes this particularly disturbing is that whilst an agency just might forgive you for putting your work as an extra where nobody remembers you on a resumé, talking yourself onto a project and then failing to turn up is probably very much an agency firing offense. So the effect of this scene is not merely reaffirming Fictional Greg Sestero's loyalty to Tommy Wiseau, it is basically showing that Tommy Wiseau guilt-trips and emotionally blackmails Fictional Greg Sestero into ruining Fictional Greg Sestero's career. Gee, and we are supposed to sympathise with these guys. Basically, the problem with The Disaster Artist According To The Franco Brothers is that it takes too many liberties with reality, and almost every liberty that it takes is not an improvement.
Sucking the enjoyment out is how we get at it and make use of it. It's like how spiders eat insects by liquefying their innards and sucking them -off- out.
It's so clear that this is kind of a fluke for Franco. He's not taking criticism seriously or improving his craft, he just took on a project everyone would love no matter what. Really glad you pointed that out, he needs all the criticism he can get. Movie still looks like a lot of fun though.
I went to see it with my brother on Hollywood Blvd at the Egyptian Theater in 2018. It’s gotta be the best theater experience I ever had. Everyone was throwing plastic spoons whenever a spoon showed up on screen.
if you want the genuine article get the disaster artist audiobook It very very clearly shows why tommy couldn't have played himself, as I'd hope this movie would have as well, so not sure why adam wonders about this
Fun Fact: the James Franco interpretations of the William Faulkner books were so bad that I wrote my first independent research essay on why the movies sucked dick
About the dubbing problem, doesn't this movie just show the making of the movie? Specifically the shooting part. Like they don't show the end result which was dubbed right? I haven't watched the movie so I don't know, but I think they're not wrong there
Things from the book I wish had made it into the movie: - The post production dubbing - Kyle Vogt having to leave production like he said he would, and his character getting unceremoniously replaced. - Tommy's SAG commercial for Street Fashions USA - Street Fashions USA in general - "Hospital on Guerrero Street" being an improv line to get a rise out of Tommy - Tommy's five minutes of silence on the anniversary of 9/11 that he kept restarting if anyone made any noise - Calling Dan back to play Chris-R in the rooftop reshoot of his scene, and my favorite exchange from the book: "Did Tommy blow up the studio yet?" "No, but he's working on it." I'm probably nitpicking, but still, it was a fun movie.
After reading the book I can not only safely say that the source material IS in fact too good for James Franco, but I also legitimately believe that Tommy Wiseau is portrayed as a far too likeable character in this film.
Damn bro, you were there? We should have met up. That screening at the Rio was easily the greatest theatre experience ever so far in my life. Can't wait to watch this movie again!
I recently started watching Funhaus because of a friend, ended up binge watching their GTA videos and was surprised to see Adam rock up in one of the videos in like 2015. Had never seen any connection between the 2 channels before that despite watching Adam for years. And now right after that you suddenly bring up a Funhaus collaboration for the first time that I've ever seen on this channel, the coincidence is tripping me out.
Not having seen the movie I can't really comment too clearly on this, but the criticism that they recreated the scenes visually while messing up the audio sounds very odd. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the point being made, but considering the recreation of these scenes are in real time as they're being filmed there is no "dubbed" feel to recreate... Scenes are dubbed after the fact. Again, maybe I'm misunderstanding the point, but that criticism seems very off.
Actually, the cameos make this film brilliant. Tommy wanted nothing more than to be famous, so the joke is that all of these famous people are playing ordinary people in Tommy's life. It's so good.
How much money does Tommy wiseau make from all this? I hope he didn't just accept a flat fee for the rights to the room, if he gets a percentage of every screening of the room, and the disaster artist...man he'd be wealthy.
Yeah I’ve seen posters outside of various movie theatres for midnight screenings of the room in Camden, London and SanFrancisco. always wanted to see it but unfortunately was just walking by to do something else at the time of seeing them, deffo on my bucket list.
The movie was okay-pretty watchable and I thought the cameo's added to the fun, but the book is far superior. There are so many stories left out. Tommy is quite unlikable in the book which has been massively altered for the film.
When I tweeted Tim and Eric about making this movie I intended Christopher Walken as Wiseau. Imagine a Tim and Eric style telling of this story with Walken attempting to sound like Wiseau. Would have been glorious.
I don't understand why people want to see untalented and unfunny people such as James Franco and Seth Rogan pathetically leech onto something that actually IS funny, the original The Room.
I actually saw the TIFF premiere for it back in September with my brothers and sister in law and it was awesome, Tommy and Greg were at the screening along with James and Dave Franco.
What annoyed me was how they acted like Kyle Vogt stuck with the entire movie. They make no mention of him leaving and show him reminiscing with co-stars at the premiere like nothing happened. It's a known fact that Kyle quit production before the movie was finished because he got another gig, which is why Peter was notably absent from the party (hence, the mysterious Steve). I don't see why they needed to leave that out.
They also left out the two DP's leaving and the crew's storming out which were fascinating stories [especially as a fight nearly broke out for the first crew, then one of the second stayed, asked if he could take over and got the job!]
I saw this with my friend who has never seen the Room, and he enjoyed it. He knew a few of the lines but didn't know they were from the Room. This film opened his eyes to the history of the film and interested him in watching The Room on his own sometime soon. Just in case anyone was curious what someone thought who didn't know about the source material.
Hey, Adam, glad you covered this. I've read the book a couple of times but I have yet to see the film (and obviously I'm familiar with The Room). One of my concerns was that from what I could tell, it seemed like they were 'sugar coating' Tommy, emphasizing his childlike craziness, but not much bringing up all the manipulative stuff he did to Greg. I was also a little miffed that during the Golden Globes, they brought Tommy up on stage, but Greg, the GUY WHO WROTE THE BOOK, just got a quick camera shot, still sitting at the table.
"I did not hit her oh hi mark." Is something I want written on my gravestone, and I'll leave a completely bullshit cryptic note to my children saying "Find the Ancient Wiseau."
Hi Im Adam, and I'm going to complain about every aspect of this movie for the next 10 minutes. but don't think this is a negative review. What's that? You want me to point out some positive things? James Franco has a good stoner face. 6/10 see ya!
"The Room has achieved such a cult status that it regularly plays sold-out midnight's screenings across the world." - YMS 2017. Not in Poland. Nope. *2017* was the year I first heard about The Room. *Was.* Happy New Year!
Narco Psycho I feel kind of bad for people that still call people faggots as a way to insult and hurt feelings. Makes them look extremely febel minded. It makes you kind of look incredibly stupid. It's okay if it takes you a few minutes to respond I know you're going to have to Google search what febel means.
Well if the recreations of scenes are in the context of watching them be filmed, as it looks from the clips you are showing, it wouldn't make sense to have them dubbed. A scene of them recording in post production is a missed opportunity for sure though.
Hate me all you want, YMS fans. I think you're nitpicking the hell out of this movie. Like you treat their neglect of the dubbing as though it's the Original fucking Sin. And the "unspecial" directing is a criticism you could apply to most directors who are not super-famous. Not a perfect movie, but you're bloating up the 5-8% imperfection just for the sake of criticizing it. And sorry, those attempts at criticisms are just too damn petty to take seriously.
This handheld shit tells you that the movie misses the point of the source material in terms of direction. The story in the book is a grand story of aspiration to the noblest dreams. Two men, become frinds, sharing the idea that dreams are to be won, not to be unreachable. Therefore the cinematography should have been grand and glamorous, it should have looked like a timeless story, it should have been grandiouse.
If you enjoyed this film or even "The Room", please read the book. There are so many fascinating little details about Tommy that they left out of the movie since there is simply not enough time to add extra backstory about Tommy while focusing on the main story of The Room's production. The book paints a much better picture about what Tommy is like as a person. I was slightly disappointed by this movie because I love the book so much :)
I enjoyed the ending despite the inaccuracy. They pretty much compressed Wiseu's slow realization in a single moment, basically it's a sped up summary of what The Room has become over the years. It's fictionalized but I think it's pretty effective.
"The source material is the best part of this movie." YES. The book is so much better and honestly think it would've been better with a good Greg and being more Greg-centric. I got so excited when I saw you read the book and met Greg Sestero (I also have) so I was hoping you'd feel how I did. You definitely liked it more, though. Still glad you didn't give it an excellent rating.
I saw this film 3 days ago and I have to say that every one of your complaints are completely unfounded. If you're going to criticise the direction at least point out specifics of what you didn't like rather than just saying "almost everything that could be attributed to the directing and cinematography was kinda lame"

watch the room beforehand last time I checked the whole movie is on UA-cam
i haven't seen it in full but its like troll 2 or anything nicholas cage worked in you can get the gist simply by references made to the source material
Caol McHugh I do plan to watch the room.
I think the whole thing's on UA-cam. After hearing everything about it I finally sat down to watch it a few months ago. It's probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen but it was painful too. You won't regret it though.
0:58 We would have gotten this review earlier but yesterday Adam was watching Shrek
I mean, I understand why Wiseau didn't play himself, but I don't see the reasoning behind not having Greg Sistero play himself.
Antiform You mean his brother who's never been in a movie with him before?
Antiform He's been in those types of comedies but never with James himself.
Because he sucks at acting
I’d say the handheld was to try and make it feel like it’s a documentary, and that you’re watching what happened
low angle shots like the running scene looks like it is going for a cinematic biopic. they should've had a cheeky camera man running around recording every moment of tommy wiseau because that legit is what happens with almost every production. just look up tommy wiseau in la la land.
A double feature of The Room and The Disaster Artist sounds great.
Now we just need a Chris Chan movie
Tommy Why-though? We don't really need a movie about the Internet memes and such, do we?
But there is no happy ending
oh no
@@andeggbreaks That comment aged perfectly, like a fine cheese
This aged perfectly
It is passably enjoyable, though.
im fed up with this worl
Adam you're always trying to play psychologist with us!
I highly recommend the book which is actually fantastic in my opinion. I'm already reading it for a second time now and I bought it in september.
The oh Hai Mark was not dubbed. I read the book.
James Franco is unspecial
The Widows Son his acting is so lazy I'm always so surprised people think he's funny
I imagine James Franco is ready this comment right now as he sheds a single tear
The Widows Son true, he's the definition of class B and so are his movies
The Widows Son James Franco is the room of actors. He's so bad i love him
Non-special
I found your channel when Adam at Funhaus mentioned it like a year+ ago, glad I did and its always a nice bonus when you guest in their videos.
goddamn Adam, you're a critic man, I absolutely love how you constructively tear shit to shreds. It's extremely refreshing.
ZacharyJTA especially when most reviews are fanboys giving films the benefit of the doubt.
Also a good way to suck any and all enjoyment out everything.
Sucking the enjoyment out is how we get at it and make use of it. It's like how spiders eat insects by liquefying their innards and sucking them -off- out.
I was so happy to see you collaborate with Funhaus again. It's a perfect pairing!
Wait, this video with around 50k views now #39 on trending?!
Nila Callejon stop it scammer
Tommy Weezoo, Tommy Waiso, Tommy Whezau, Tommy Wisey
Adum, are u even trying?
James acting was damn near perfect but I do agree if they had another director it could of been so much more..
I've binged your videos too. So through Funhaus, you have a new fan.
if you want the genuine article get the disaster artist audiobook
It very very clearly shows why tommy couldn't have played himself, as I'd hope this movie would have as well, so not sure why adam wonders about this
Zach Efron was cool as Chris R actually.
It was the funniest scene.
It was a good movie.
I haven't watched the movie so I don't know, but I think they're not wrong there
Things from the book I wish had made it into the movie:
- The post production dubbing
- Kyle Vogt having to leave production like he said he would, and his character getting unceremoniously replaced.
- Tommy's SAG commercial for Street Fashions USA
- Street Fashions USA in general
- "Hospital on Guerrero Street" being an improv line to get a rise out of Tommy
- Tommy's five minutes of silence on the anniversary of 9/11 that he kept restarting if anyone made any noise
- Calling Dan back to play Chris-R in the rooftop reshoot of his scene, and my favorite exchange from the book: "Did Tommy blow up the studio yet?" "No, but he's working on it."
I'm probably nitpicking, but still, it was a fun movie.
There is such a weird contrast between this review and Chris Stuckman's.
Also, did you just give away the ending... That's fine, I guess.
the dog in the "hi doggy" part is. so cute. i love that part!
I didn't even realize the room was dubbed. That's funny
I just moved to Vancouver so I'm still getting use to the area... it seems that the Rio Theatre is only 20 minutes away from my apartment.
Will you do a review on murder on the orient express?
I love the use of the room music in the background
After reading the book I can not only safely say that the source material IS in fact too good for James Franco, but I also legitimately believe that Tommy Wiseau is portrayed as a far too likeable character in this film.
Damn bro, you were there? We should have met up.
That screening at the Rio was easily the greatest theatre experience ever so far in my life. Can't wait to watch this movie again!
I definitely have breast cancer.
... *sips tea*...
Could be worse, imgine having breasts so small they cant fit in the mamogramme.
wh
Got to love The Rio love
I stopped watching the Lord of the Rings for this....
Varinder Bhandal has borimoir died yet?
L33TBrownGuy yep. Me and my brother are on the second movie now. We're at the scene where Gandalf is fighting the Balrog while falling.
Has the tour commercial ended yet? Or are they still walking?
What kind of porn is 'Lord of the Rings?'
Varinder Bhandal At the beginning of the movie, or later?
Great review.
Also I'd love to see you on more Podcast.
You on Funhaus was hilarious.
It wouldn't make sense for those scenes to be dubbed because we're watching the perspective of the initial filming.
Any news about more music from An Unkindness
Album comes out march or april 2018 i think, but im not sure
I've been looking forward to this for months
I don't understand why people want to see untalented and unfunny people such as James Franco and Seth Rogan pathetically leech onto something that actually IS funny, the original The Room.
Me and room have the same birthday I was born June 27th 2003. The same day room premiered and I’m so happy about that fact
What a funny story Aiden
>seth rogan
>pretty enjoyable
pick one
To me, the flower shop is funny mainly because of how rushed and insane it is.
This feels more like a Negative Review than a Positive Review. What did he say was positive about it?
James Franco's performance
It's funny you posted this today because I'm going to a screening of the room tonight
this is the most negative positive review ever
I saw this with my friend who has never seen the Room, and he enjoyed it. He knew a few of the lines but didn't know they were from the Room. This film opened his eyes to the history of the film and interested him in watching The Room on his own sometime soon.
Just in case anyone was curious what someone thought who didn't know about the source material.
They couldn't have brought on Tommy. He wouldn't have remembered his lines.
Adam should have played Tommy Wiseau
Can't wait to see this honestly
Who Films Homosexual spotted.
Narco Psycho Also your first comment wasn't very original or funny either.
Who Media figures
3:31 Fucking Nathan Fielder is playing Peter.
Adum, keep your dumb comments in your pocket!
I enjoyed the ending despite the inaccuracy. They pretty much compressed Wiseu's slow realization in a single moment, basically it's a sped up summary of what The Room has become over the years. It's fictionalized but I think it's pretty effective.
IT'S NOT TRUE! I DID NOT HIT THE DISLIKE BUTTON! I DID NOOOOOOOOOT! Oh, hi, Adum.
I'm really excited for this movie. I still need to see The Room though. I've only seen bits and pieces.
The Disaster Artist looks great.
