Why is this movie good? Because it's real Hollywood Movie!!!
Kevin Lazaro I LOVE it, can't believe the toilet thing was not made up for comedy purposes but something that ACTUALLY happened... hahahaha hahahaha OMG
Hey google Tommy Wiseau as the Joker audition
I'm not joking - he actually does a Great Performance and honestly - hes better than Jared Letto and looks Scarier than Heath Ledger looked - I am not joking I think he should replace Letto
I did not hit her it's not true it's bullshit I did not hit her I did nawwwt...oh hi Doug
How ironic that a guy who wanted to make a great hollywood movie ends up being one of the worst. Yet a "movie" about one of the worst hollywood movies can end up being one of the best movies. My mind is racked.
neoasura Maybe that was his intention?
Lets be honest, it probably was not.
neoasura - Even more ironic that James Franco made a movie to mock an actor/director, but the movie he's mocking is better and more successful than the new one.
Are you secretly Tommy Wiseau or something, mate? You seem really adamant about attacking the Disaster Artist and praising the Room.
theAngryscotman - Only Tommy Wiseau could agree with me, right? What a story. I guess Tommy Wiseau upvoted my comment on 3 different accounts too.
I just find your standpoint bizarre. The movie's based off a book written by a close friend of Wiseau's, it's not like you really need to defend him from the big bad Hollywood system.
I did not sue them, it's not true, it's bullshit, I did not sue them, I did naaawt.... Oh hi Doug
Now I just have this image in my head of Tommy Wiseau constantly getting angry and trying to sue people for making fun of The Room and Greg just being there like, "Tommy...come on man."
It's a shame Doug doesn't get a cameo in this movie, at least as himself
Ben Wasserman yeah, I was hoping he'd be one of the cameos at the beginning.
I expected the movie to address the publicity The Room got after its release and show a clip of the review.
@SALT It would have been funny if instead of Seth Rogan Doug was the director
Lol y’all are delusional if you think anyone in the film industry gives a shit about Doug walker.
@@alexmaverick6647 Ok, I wouldn't have been that curt, but it is kind of a good point. Plus, otherwise, it doesn't really allow him to review the movie. Or maybe he could, but it would feel like there is too much bias.
“You are tearing me apart Lisa!” One of the greatest movie quotes ever.
no that is the second best quote of all time, the You are tearing me apart Lisa!" when he is in the bathroom is funnier
It has overshadowed. 'Adrian!!' from Rocky and 'Stella!!!' from A Streetcar Named Desire combined.
"So Johnny, how did you score on your SATs?"
"Oh, high mark."
The book is so fucking excellent. I've read it like 5 times and it never gets old.
A lot of the criticism I've seen leveled at the movie are from critics I greatly respect but who I don't think have read the book. They were all talking about how the movie should have focused more on The Room as a cultural phenomenon, how it grew, etc. ALA Best Worst Movie, but that's not the point of the book. The book is about the horribly fascinating man that Wiseau is and a young actor's friendship with him and his experiences making the worst movie ever. And the movie adaptation does that.
I think should should try listening to the book instead, much greater experience.
Funnily enough, I watched the Double Toasted review of it, and of the four guys, the two that loved it hadn't read the book, while those who simply liked it had read it and felt it didn't live up to it.
puffnisse - Greg Sestero's impression of Tommy is much better than James Franco's. The audiobook of The Disaster Artist is better than the movie, and so is the book, and so is The Room.
Agreed, the audiobook was excellent. Sestero's Wiseau impression is so good. Some of the most fun I've had with any story.
Look like a proud father who's showcasing his child's book in the thumbnail.
"If alot of people loved each other the world would be a better place to live."-Tommy Wiseau
"The bald head... the lack of skits... the serious review... what's going on here?"
You betrayed me! You're not good. You, you're just a chicken. Chip-chip-chip-chip-cheep-cheep.
Tadicuslegion78 “Nobody insults my favorite farm animal!”
-That Guy With the Glasses
I believe Tommy Wiseau is an legal alien on Earth and one day he came to the government and said "I want make movie, I want to be star on Earth, please give me some help". The Room was financed with the government's money and it's a recreation of how Tommy sees the complex human interaction, and he does his best to pull out his most brilliant impersonation of a human being. And nothing is gonna change my mind.
Is Doug aware he is in big part responsable for how big The Room got? before his NC video, the movie was just popular in the US, after the review, the movie became a phenomeon all around the world.
Btw, love how Doug describes Greg as the alien/human translator between him and Tommy.
I'll be honest. When I first saw 'The Room' I thought it was a soft core porno.......
"Two sides of a different coin" has got to be one of the best and most-apt misspeakings I've heard in a long time!
I just have seen this movie a few hours ago. This was an amazing experience. Very funny and kinda moving. The audience was laughing at loud, cheering - just having fun. At the end there was an ovation. That was one of the best screenings in my life!
This movie is this generation's Ed Wood
KaleLikesWaffles I agree! The Room is pretty much Plan 9 From Outer Space for our generation.
I feel sorts bad for Tommy in a small wah he was a dude who actually wanted to "make a movie " just a guy like many of us who said I wish I could make a movie
kevin texter well so was Ed wood. There is a cross of respect and humor.
From everything I've heard, it's basically been concluded that he suffered head injuries in a car accident a while back, so he literally has some brain issues. In other words, he probably *was* a normal guy, initially, but then he had an accident that fucked with his head, and he became this weird dude who wanted to make a crappy movie, because he didn't know any better.
Matthew Dekker If that'a true, that would make me feel guilty for ever laughing.
+UberKrassMann I think the mocking should be playful with undertones of understanding. You can sympathize with Tommy even as you're throwing spoons at the screen.
What a story doug!... hah-hah
I feel like a freaking hipster knowing about 'The Room' way before 'The Disaster Artist' movie!
yeah Nostalgia Critic introduced me to the Room back in 2010, and since then i've seen it multiple times over the years and its kinda fun seeing how it's blowing up because of the Disaster Artist (which was my most anticipated film of the year and did NAHT dissapoint lol)
I'm in 10th Grade so I'm a high-school student and I did my book report in front of the whole class about the Disaster Artist
Bat Spam101 when I was explaining the book my teacher could not stop laughing
It could win. The Oscars LOVE movies about making movies.
too bad, Oscars don't like director with scandal. Unless you're really good
Wait....tommy tried to take you guys down? After you saying it was a good movie in the end and for everyone to check the movie out? Getting more money and views and free positive publicity?
What some people will do to treat their hurting butts
Doug never said The Room was GOOD. He said it was so bad that you have to see it to believe it.
Nostalgia Critic's review of The Room has A LOT to do with the popularity of the movie.
It's cool that Doug has really been enjoying a lot more movies lately. Last year, a lot of movies he said were simply good. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I really missed that enthusiasm when he really enjoyed movies.
Anyone else hoping for a cameo from Doug in the movie? His review was definitely apart of The Room's success in gaining a cult following and popularity.
It's ironic, because you guys were a huge part of the reason why the room is a major success. I only found out about it in the first place through channel awesome!
So the fact that Tommy wisseau even contemplated a lawsuit is very disappointing news to me.
Emperor Reign i found out through cinemasins and this video called "100 cheesiest movie lines"
Dont try to find sense in Tommy Wiseu, I really think Greg Sestero is the only person on Earth who can comunicate with him.
I have a feeling that Tommy was deliberately exploiting the Streisand effect acting like he didn't want people to see it but he did.
I think much like with Family Guy, Adult Swim played a big part in it the success....when they aired it on April Fools Day they put a big spotlight on it imo. I know that was my first exposure to the film and I thought it was some Tim And Eric sketch at first when I flipped the channel. I didn't know what the heck they were doing until I finally realized it was an April Fools prank.
Oscars 2018: Tommy Wiseau on the red carpet. Let's make it happen
Seriously, if that happens I honestly will feel very good about him, pretty much everything he set out to do, he accomplished. Didn’t go exactly the way he wanted, but still.
YOU ARE TEARING ME APART DOUG
Ha ha, what a nice review Doug! So, *how's your sex life?*
This is going to be long.
Just my personal opinion, I think the movie doesn’t hold a candle to the book. James Franco did a good job, and the movie is a decent watch, however I had a few things that bothered me as a person who read the book.
For instance, I think they showed Greg in an overly positive light. In the book which is written by Greg himself , he is a chill guy who is an aspiring actor and his relationship with tommy is pretty complicated. You constantly keep getting this feeling where Greg may have used tommy as a means to an end to advance his acting career, but every time you are about to make that conclusion, there’s a genuinely endearing moment of friendship between him and tommy that nudges those suspicions away. In the movie, the friendship is very direct and Greg is made almost a perfect guy.
Moreover, they made the “pinkie swear” a big part of the movie when I don’t think it’s mentioned in the book.
Another thing is how the inspiration of The Room actually came to life. It was not when Greg talked to Tommy on the rooftop as shown in the movie, it was actually after Tommy and Greg had watched a movie together called “The Talented Mr.Ripley.” I think showing how Tommy was inspired to make a movie after watching a movie is more powerful than somebody suggesting him to make a new movie.
But more than anything, I wish they had cut the opening scene where they show a series of celebrities commenting on the cult phenomenon of The Room and used that time slot instead to show some other moments from the book. Specifically, the time gap before Tommy hands Greg the script of The Room. In that time gap, Greg actually goes on to have a normal life away from acting. He works at a clothing store and is doing pretty well for himself(which he credits being away from Tommy to). He then gets a random phone call from tommy who apparently was not in America and was crying over the phone, leaving a suicide note for the only friend he had. Had that scene been included and then we would’ve seen tommy later in the movie, I think it would’ve been a little more inspirational to see tommy being able to channel such a dark feeling into something creative that is the script for his movie.
I can go on more but I have a feeling I’ve already bored a couple of people. All in all, if you haven’t read the book then please go read it because it’s a wonderful homage to those who want to pursue a career in any creative medium and by all means please watch the movie.
Yeah I rewatched the movie recently and I remember thinking, “Greg was not always this complacent and supportive of Tommy’s decisions in the beginning.” Plus that Bryan Cranston scene was so obviously fiction and felt so forced. Shit like that just simply does not happen. The movie definitely streamlined a lot of events but it’s still a decent film that’s held together by the performances of the two leads and its sincere adoration of The Room.
I don't remember if it was Tommy, Greg, or both, but he/they said it's retroactively true. As in, they ARE friends now, and have genuinely really supported and helped each other out (e.g. Tommy only attended the Golden Globes because of Greg's encouragement).
At the time, Greg was fascinated by Tommy but also weirded out and using him. But Tommy was also "using" Greg to some extent. So the movie isnt accurate but does reflect how Tommy and Greg see things in hindsight. And it's never brought up how its INCREDIBLY invasive for Greg to write all that stuff...like damn, Tommy is chill as fuck.
It's funny how many parallels there are between Doug and Tommy's directing style if the stories about the anniversary movies are true.
Wow... I saw your interviews with Sestero and Wiseau, but I had no idea you were actually regularly acquainted with Greg Sestero! I love his book, and think it's a riot. I can't wait to see this movie. I'm so glad I checked out your review!
I really like your candor in this review. You're a bit ballsier with the way you talk about Wiseau than I'd be, but now that I think of it yes, he did frankly do a lot of "scummy" things.
As for Oscars, hey, I was pleasantly blown away when "Fury Road" took away the awards it did. So anything is possible.
My only issue with it it's that there was no explanation to the fucking "hi doggy" scene my favorite fucking scene!!! And they barely put the "chip chip chip chip" on it which is literally one of the best lines!!!
I think they just wanted to be done with the damn movie and stopped questioning the scenes
Also, there is no explanation.. Tommy has never given any. When asked, he just gives non sequiturs.
Great Video
Epic Music Movie no it's not a great video, Doug didn't get his promotion, he got drunk last night, and he hit me
I have this weird feeling that if James Franco wins an Oscar for this that Tommy Wiseau is going to go up on stage and try to accept it for him, take it his own house, display it, show it off as "his Oscar" even though it will still have James' name on it and after waking up every morning he will leave his bedroom and say "Oh, hi Oscar."
Everyone in this movie was great but props to James Franco. He allows the audience to sympathize with Tommy to a certain extent without exonerating him of his faults.
Hahaha, what a story Doug!
All due respect, I find The Nostalgia Critic kind of irritating, but whenever you do reviews, or commentaries, in your own voice you consistently reveal yourself to be intelligent, articulate, and worth watching. Really enjoyed this review.
Probably because the Critic is deliberately meant to be juvenile and irate, whereas Doug seems to be a pretty chill guy IRL.
I didn't know Tom Bissell co-wrote the book. I went to school with him. He's done several video game scripts that I really enjoyed. I'll have to catch up with his work.
It's pretty ironic that there are possible Oscar nods for the disaster artist considering the movie it came from. Life is weird sometimes.
Been looking forward to this movie all year. It's so nice to hear that it's getting positive reviews and even some Ocsar buzz. People need to see this movie.
So anyway, how is your sex life?
Nobody respect his vision... so he got James Franco to make an Oscar worthy movie about him. Anyways how rich is tommy wiseau?
He was rich before he made the room. It said he spent about 6 million of his own money producing the movie so i think he still has so serious currency in his bank.
Yeah. Despite being bad at making movies, he made good on doing retail.
He was rich before making The Room, he became even richier after, and if he is getting royalties for this movie...damn, he might be able to buy the planet where he came from.
Greg Sestero did a phenomenal impression of Tommy Wiseau though. When I saw that impression of Tommy on your channel, I thought he nailed it. He has that crazy ass accent down. I also adore the friendship between Greg and Tommy. They talk so highly of each other and I admire that about them a lot. I didn't see this movie but I did see clips of it and it does look really good. I'm surprised at how accurate they got with everything in it I mean right down to the timing, the lines, the really bad acting and above all, the Tommy Wiseau impression. Great job to any and all who were a part of such a cult classic like The Room.
There should be a tie for Best Actor at the Academy Awards James Franco for The Disaster Artist and Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour
Not gonna lie Doug, I wanted to see this movie. But before anything, I wanted to see your opinion on it first. A lot of people reviewed it, but your opinion was the one I was waiting for. The Room is one of my favorite of your reviews. It was one of the first one I’ve ever seen from you. I go back and show it to so many people because I just love it. Even if I am depressed, I still laugh. And I’ve seen every interaction (that you’ve shown) where you promoted this movie. I look for the book at book stores because you’ve drawn attention. Not to sound like too much of a kiss up, but I am so glad this movie is doing good. I believe great things can come from bad things and I am glad that this shows it. I will try to see this movie just for a good experience, and because it it deserving.
Well, this video just took an entirely new meaning recently right?
You're the reason that movie was made.
Hernard Badloght ya i had never heard of the room before nostalgia critic
I really feel like Doug should get a producers credit for this film. Without his review, I doubt the book even sees the light of day, let alone the movie.
I thought Doug shaved his head for a bit, why is he still keeping it so short?
Because he's a creepy Brad Jones fanboy trying to imitate his idol in all ways.
Two movies in a row that Doug really liked (Coco & The Disaster Artist), must be a good month for movies.
I'm glad you never spoil any scenes in this type of review
To show how great Franco is as Wiseau, my dad (who loves the original film just as much as me) thought that Wiseau was actually acting as himself. He didn't find out it was Franco until the ending (which I won't spoil).
YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, DOUG!!!
I saw this at Loew's Lincoln Center. The crowd was filled with people who had obviously seen The Room. The way they reacted, it was like the 2003 Room premier must have been like. Everyone reveling in incompetence, and when Johnny blew his brains out, it was like the Miracle on Ice, the Joe Carter home run, and the Brandi Chastian goal rolled into one.
"Keep the change. Hi Doug-E."
While I don't really agree that comedy is just misery and tragedy like how Doug believes (I believe it has to do more with the bigger picture of irony, surprise, etc.), in this case, I can definitely see how it can work in regards to this film.
This movie is the closet Tommy Wiseau will ever get to an Oscar.
Your The Room NC review is the reason why I know this film. Eternally grateful.
Really surprised none of the comments are paralleling this movie and the Channel Awesome drama.
11:25 "I'm so happy to see this come as far at is has". And I love Lisa so much.
We saw this at a preview screening, and the line to get in went out the door and down the street.
can you imagine if this movie gets an oscar? I want to see tommy at the ceremony, in some strange way it would be both his dream come true and some kind of ironic fate for him.
Went to my local theater asking for this movie... but was disappointed when they informed me that it doesn’t come out globally till the 8th... 😔... a must watch for us.
I'm 100% sure this movie wouldn't exist if you hadn't mocked The Room in the 1st place, I wish you had a cameo there
I mean, he’s not the only person to point out how ridiculous The Room is, nor was he the first.
Thank you for your comment about Greg Sestero! He is very under-rated :) I hope he gets the recognition he deserves :D
Rogan and Franco are guerrilla marketing hard, aren't they?
No, they filmed the movie 2 years ago in 2015. But the movie sucks, so they didn't bother to release it on time. Get The Room on DVD or Blu-ray instead.
You're the reason i've ever heard of the room and love it. I have bought the movie years ago and read the book countless times. Cannot wait for this film.
I'm so happy that everything worked out fine for everyone in the end.
i love your channel so much, i've been watching you for 8 years now , love your humour and everything else...
Honestly I think Doug is part of the reason this film was made
@@ericoung4602 The review he did the Nostalgia Critic was one of the most major reviewers of it
I just want to say Doug I finally got the chance to meet Greg Sestero and you’re right he is an absolutely nice guy. He also happened to be the first famous person I ever met in my life!!
I want to hear someone say they watched or read The Disaster Artist first and THEN watch The Room and hear their thoughts on the whole experience.
You are TEARING ME APART, DOUG.
*Spoilers*
-
Having not read the book, the part in the film with the water/heat and the ass scene had me turning to my partner, who was laughing along with everyone else, to say "I feel bad for laughing".
I think it's a weird combination of seeing this ridiculous character, mixed with having seen the original film and also feeling uncomfortable at what's transpiring on screen. It's kind of a coping reflex.
Whereas with the premiere scene, when everyone on screen is actually laughing, the audience in my screening were dead silent, because it's the key humanising scene for his character in the film.
Basically, it's a great film!
Tommy Wiseau told Doug that he submitted The Room to The Academy for an Oscar.
The Disaster Artist might actually win an Oscar.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!! 😂😂
It is funny & sad at the same time how he criticises Tommy Wiseau for not providing water to the actors and having someone faint when now alegations have come up that this also happened during several channel awesome productions.
The great part of the entire saga is that Tommy got his wish but Greg got HIS dream, too. To begin with, Greg wanted to be a screenwriter and even submitted a story to John Hughes, back in the day. A VERY happy accident.
well seeing how Doug's review of "The Room" is about 2million views now, i would say that if it weren't for Doug, and many others, but i would say mainly Doug who IF didn't do the review of "The Room" it wouldn't have ended up as an actual movie about this "Character". In other words DOUG made you famous..
I first saw the Room on adult swim like 10 years ago, really late one night. The guide just showed regular programming. So I watched it, insanely confused. And for years I tried to figure what it was, and no one knew what I was talking about. And now it's super popular. Sort of funny.
But I thought the Diaster Artist was really good. Doug nailed it, however, in that it definitely did give Tommy way more humanity than anyone had given him before.
Especially with the ending and how torn he was when everyone laughed at his passion project, but he just owned it. It was great.
Only issue was Dave Franco was just himself and that kind of took me out of it, but everyone else was pretty wonderful to watch. James was pretty swell though.
*Doug uploads a new video*
Me: In a few minutes bitch
Oscars - I call wining best original screenplay & actor. It will probably be nominated for a lot of categories, I feel that even if my picks didn't win, it will walk away with one Oscar.
Olivia Cabrera It won't since the film is based on pre-existing material but I definitely do believe that it'll be nominated for best adapted screenplay.
"Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheeep!"
WAIT WAIT WAIT!!!! You were at the Music Box Theatre to?!?! When did you go?!?! Did you go last night on December 1st?! If you went last night then dam it would've been awesome to see you there!!
Edit - Also to those of you who aren't from Chicago the Music Box Theatre is an awesome place. The theater itself remnant from a bygone era going all the way back to the Golden Age Of Hollywood. Just stepping in there sometimes, especially going into that large theater room is like going back into the past. Seeing the Disaster Artist there was awesome. I'm surprised the Music Box isn't considered a tourist attraction. Definitely try and go it if you can whenever you visit Chicago. ALSO one other thing The Music Box Theatre is having a midnight screening of The Room on December 8th at the Music Box Theatre show up if you can!
Ha ha ha, what a movie Mark!
"WAKE UP man, what planet are you on??"
Even Tommy Wiseau loves this movie.
"In the middle is the Tommy Wiseau filter" You mean....the "Timey-Wimey Wiseau Ball"?
Actually Johnny Depp was nominated for Pirates of the Caribbean
'The Room' has the power to become life changing for millions... if not billions... of people... heavy!
Yooo betray me! Effribody betray me!
Ahm feddap wid diss wurold!
Sincerely, Doug, I'm glad you shared the movie with us, otherwise I might have missed it or I would notice it too late. Glad it will show in theatres in Montreal, I'm really interested it checking this out! ^^
i swear you and your review are the reason The Disaster Artist was made, not discrediting Greg Sestero but your review went so viral that a lot of ppl started paying attention to the movie, me included, i laughed so hard at your video that i HAD to check this movie and it became such a cult movie! seriously good job :D
"If a lot of people loved each other, the world would be a better place to live." So true Tommy Wiseau
"You can read all about it in my book, The Tao of Johnny. It's real good, hahhh."
"You know what they say, love is blind"
No that's just an orgy.
Knitpicky is fine as long as you dont insult the movie as a whole based on the franchise I didnt see it yet but I might check it out
You made an interesting observation about real people being portrayed in movies. It puts more perspective on the real Patch Adams’ dissatisfaction with the movie.
