You can't beat some tank maintenance, I've just done mine. Mrs. takes the kids out with her mum every Sunday. Nice water change, filter service and clean, and a glass scrub.
@FishShopMatt certainly is Matt, I'm currently fighting a hair algae out break like yourself. It's infected my elodea forest, something rotten. So weekly water changes and maintenance is a must !
Always love seeing a pup or two in your videos. I wish you would video your trips to the shop when you go pick out your new fish. I miss seeing the shop and the staff there.
Thank you. I should really film in the shop tomorrow. I'm in there often enough. The problem being is every time I go in I end up talking to customers and staff for ages and forget what I'm there for. Maybe I'll try and sort something out.
I'm so happy to support your channel. 5 quid a month is a bargain for not only the information you share, but the intelligence and enthusiasm in which you present it. Defo my fav fish dude! Keep up the great work!
@@FishShopMatt My pleasure. I may or may not be buttering you up to get you down to Torquay to hire you to scape/stock a few tanks/pond for me next year!
Just wanted you to know, that you are my go to channel when I need motivation to do my tank maintenance. I sit here knowing I have 5 tanks that need attention, and I have to be in the right mindset in order to do the job well. I’m currently watching your channel now, and it will continue to play during the next few hours of my aquarium work. Thank you Matt, you always get me motivated to do the task many fish keepers just need a push to start, on these days where we would rather be surfing the web 🐟🐠 🦀🐡
Matt boy I wish you to grow with this channel, so that you don't have to go to work. You really have a hand for it, you arrange nicely and naturally, the bubbles are well thought out and pleasing to the eye:)
Years ago, I was moving to a country house and had to sell my aquariums. As I was breaking down the 29 gallon one, putting plant and fish into a transport insulated box for the buyer, there were my 2 Khuli loaches!! I had not seen them for two years!!!
Love seeing what's new with your tanks,if you want green shrimp, feed the crystals spirulina, part of them will be green lol💚 great video, thanks for sharing
It makes sense (at least in my mind) that the dragon stone would be the likely cause of the algae, as it is clay based and we often use clay for nutrients. Certainly wouldn't have thought of it without your video
Great video as always Matt. It feels such a treat when i see a new video from you has landed. Lovely fish, lovely aquascapes, your friendly company and lots of new fish things to learn - thank you so much! I put botanicals in my tank and agree the fish seem happier and display much more varied behaviour as they are interacting with leaves, pods etc.
I also had a white wizard snail named gandlaf the white. He survived, twice, a completly drained leaking tank (happened twice in the middleof the night so we found him nearly crispy in the morning). He also survived an amonia spike in a electric shortage that killed half my population, and died naturally at the ripe age of 2 and a half year.
Kuhlis do hide a lot, but they're also very good at stirring things up in places you can't see or get to. They're also wonderful at coming out when it's late and running races along the edges of the tank. Your son would love to watch that.
Nice video and always good to show ‘issues’ in the tank and how to tackle them. From my own experience, I would use far less nutrient rich substrates in those biotope style tanks. Sand or fine gravel with some root tabs where needed is usually enough and keeps the algae away. I do think your new American flag fish need algae so keep that in mind. Nice fish.
Interesting point about the dragonstone. I've only one 4 gallon aquarium and it has dragonstone for hard scape. It seems to get the same species of algae.
Great editing on your video 👍 It was very clear to see clean-up to addition of new roomates. 😊 Quick question for anyone, do you have videos explaining who "gets along" with who in a tank?
Everything looks so lovely. I know it was likely a bit of an editing pain, but I really enjoyed the way you did it. I'm already looking forward to the next video.
hi matt! been wanting to ask since you've taken care of them in the past - would you recommend putting a school of chili/phoenix rasboras in a 10 inch cube tank? the volume is around 4.33 gallons/16.39 liters and it's heavily heavily planted. the internet seems to be divided on this! thanks
It's definitely on the borderline of what I would suggest. If planted well and maintained well you shouldn't have too many issues. But remember with that small a tank everything will be far more volatile and can go wrong quicker. But as long as you're careful and maintain the tank well you should be able to do it.
39:05 how about some marbled hatchet fish? And yes to lemon tetras. They are so underrated because they don’t show well for a while, and definitely not in a shop!
Matt I’ve found that the Oase Biomasters are more effective with the sponges at the bottom of the canister coarse to fine with the biomedia on top. It also seems to reduce cavitation. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for letting me know. I'm actually testing something at the moment and seeing how different medias work in different places and with this one being quite botanical heavy I wanted to see what it would do to the biomedia.
You do have 2 male flag fish in the tank, i breed those so i can have an infinite fleet of algae eaters. When they are young the males dont have the black eye spot on their dorsal fin that females do. If they are very very young (basically just out of the fry stage) they may have a faded eyespot that eventually will fade away.
I'm on the mega clean side of the fence lol, some would probably say a little ocd about how clean I like my tanks. Currently running 13 aquariums with the thought of redoing everything and going towards breeding. If I do the end goal is to have 40 tanks. A rack with 30 20 gallon tanks and another with 9 10 gallon tanks and I'll keep my 5gal cube on the desk.
There's many ways to keep fish and as long as the fish are happy, it doesn't matter how you keep your aquariums or at least that's how I feel. That will be amazing if you can get all that breeding setups done!
Really liked the sequencing of this video. Also, you obviously have a mix of male and female Florida Flagfish, so what about putting them in a pond in the spring. Mine love being outside, and breed there as well.

Unfortunately, as far as I understand, we are not allowed anything other than the few fish that are actually sold for ponds outside in the UK.
Same here I think they enjoy the leaf litter in this tank. I also think I'm so used to seeing them in a shop with very little in their tank that they do just hide all the time.

Yeah to be fair, I was always under the impression that they would hide away but actually now thinking about it in a shop. You don't have much in the aquarium. But now they're in this tank with loads of leaf litter. They're actually out and about all the time.
Never kept Rice Fish, they look lovely in this tank. I'll never keep Khuli's, their snake like look aint for me. Loving the rest of your tanks. Love a peacock goby!

I have 18 kohli loachs in my aquarium. I only see one or two daily for a few seconds when I turn the lights on in the morning. They swim fast and go hide in their caves
Hi @FishShopMatt I'm having trouble deciding whether I should stick with my filtration I have in my tank already or go with a fluval u2, my current filter is a simple sponge filter which does a Stella job on bio filtration but I'm getting sick of particle matter floating around, I like the idea of the U2 but it's a Molly tank and they don't like alot of flow and don't know if that would be too much for them, the tank is a fluval roma 90 and it's planted. Would be great to have your opinion! Cheers man.
An Amazon tank is it? Silver dollars are nice, but they will out grow the tank eventually. I have some Emperor Keri (Purple)tetras. They kind of spread out all over the aquarium rather than shoaling or schooling. Maybe Pigmy hatchets? They do school, and because they have such a different shape, they are a real eye catcher. A pair or trio of rams would add a lot of colour to the tank, and would be something different from the ever so common neon or cardinal tetras. I seem to remember that you already have some pigmy corys, but maybe a more regular sized cory (or whatever they're calling them now) for the bottom? Another one that could be really interesting if you were able to get them are one of the wild species of swordtail, such as the Rio Atoyac, Aztec, or Mountain swordtails. The mountain swords are smaller than all the other subspecies of sword, but have ridiculously long swords. Both the Aztec and the Mountain swords have a caudal fin which is reminiscent of an Aztec headdress in profile. They are all speckled green in colour and have swords which are red outlined in black on the males. Females, of course, do not have swords. Us ladies are demure and peaceful, even as fish. Just as I wrote that, a dozen or so exceptions came to mind, so maybe I should have prefaced it with "Usually". Lots of situations where it's "You'd better play nice or I'll cut off your balls!" That would be piranha, and they're a bit too big anyhow.
Cool video! I would like to see red eye tetra in the festive tank, to occupy the top of the tank. Especially since the black phantoms seem to stick to the bottom.

That's why I like to show them off and make sure you know that we do have issues that we don't hide.
I fiund with khuli loaches the more there is the more you see them. They like a small community of themselves much like corys the more the merrier and more they are active.
I also got some of these rice fish last Friday! Five of them are living with my Blue Dreams now. They're a bit expensive at Diebo. Had thought of buying them in Soest at Shrimpmania, but it's a bit further away and that route has loads of speed cameras. Been there once and managed to navigate without exceeding the speed limits. But with a lot of changes in speed limit, that is kind of nerve wracking. Besides, Diebo is close to the office as well so I can pop after work. I'm hoping to breed them so I'll have more of them.
I love the fact you're choosing which fish shop to go to, because one has less speed cameras on the route hahaha. It's great when you breed a fish that's a little bit expensive. Makes you feel like you've got something back.
@@FishShopMatt I don´t mind speed cameras, but what is kind of unsettling is the speed limit switches from 80 kph to 50 kph and vice versa a lot because you´re passing through very small villages along the way. Since I´ve started driving in 2012 I´ve never been fined and I´d like to keep that clean record. Because when I go to Diebo, there are speed cameras on the parallel road of the A12 but the speed limit doesn´t change all the time. My did get photographed there a while ago....

I think that's what makes you a breath of fresh air really
Florida Flag Fish are also used to control the mosquito population in ponds and lakes in Florida, they eat the mosquito larva.
Oh that's interesting! They are ravenous so I can see why!
Over 80k… here we come 100k… hope you’re ready for us!
So close! 😂 Subs aren't really my goal to be honest but it will be nice to get there.
@@FishShopMattthink it’s a mandatory achievement for all creators. Badge of honor!
Matt what cloth/spounge are you using to clean inside your tanks? Thanks xx
Wow 80k man congrats I’ll be here in the million sub count someday ;)
ROFL The Khuli Loaches remind me of me lol, during any social event ... 😶🌫😶🌫😶🌫🤣😂🤣
Hahaha agreed!
I fiund with khuli loaches the more there is the more you see them. They like a small community of themselves much like corys the more the merrier and more they are active.
Yeah agreed I also think it helps to have loads of hiding spots.
Tak!
Oh my word that's so so kind of you!
Do you use cold water straight for the tap in your water changes? I’m always worried it will be too much of a shock to them in a nano tank
You should add a pair of apistogrammas to the south American tank
Yeah! I'm thinking this would be cool!
Another great video. I have a question about the floating plants you have with the long roots, what is the name?
Mike B

Where do you get that u shaped hose nozzle used to fill the aquarium?
Some Glas Catfish for the amazon tank.. I know Thailand etc etc. But they are cool !
Yeah I maybe in agreement with you as I saw some great ones the other day.
@ currently have 4 running with 20 black diamond neons and 4 koi betta females, among shrimps and Corry’s, rabbit snails and a L134
Their rainbow accents in the right lightning looks amazing !
I was looking at khuli loaches but my son picked out horse face loaches instead and they are always out and about.
Horse face loaches are epic and a great choice!
Hi Matt, what kind of sponge are you using to clean your glass please? 33:49
So I just re built my first tank as the wood came up first time. Still getting white stuff over the drift wood - what is that and how do I get rid of it?
Colombian tetra for the festivum tank
They would look great!
How long did you soak your dragon stone? I was thinking of using it - but to be fair anything I get including sand etc - I soak for two weeks. It's my first tank so I don't want anything going wrong! xxx
What about some congo tetras for the amazon tank? I've been thinking of building a tank around some as I think they're really beautiful but would love your thoughts on them
