I'm that guy who will bring home the last Corydoras from a stock tank because all its friends went with someone else, so it's wonderful to find some Cory love from the youtube algorithim! Consider me a newly minted subscriber. First Corys I ever kept were a pair of trilineatus in a 10-gallon community setup way back in 1995. Currently I have a quintet of aeneus (three Venezuela Orange variety, and two standard). Hard to pick a favorite, as I consider this group to be THE BEST community fish anyone can keep, but splendens, barbatus, adolfoi, aeneus, and rabauti hold a special place in my heart. I also really like pandas and paleatus, but due to where I live, they always die on me during the one hottest week out of the year - I swear they need a chiller...
Thanks for joining! I am with you about those poor cory orphans...hahaha! The barbatus is new to me, have never seen those. Have you considered Sterbai due to your hotter weather? I love their orange fins.
I have a long tank and I scaped it with dragon stone and a piece of driftwood connecting two groups of the stones. I have my Osteogaster Venezuelanus (used to be called Venezuelan Red Sail or Venezuelan Orange Cory’s) in my long tank. I used a coarser sand with smooth edges for my substrate and planted with a variety of crypts, Anubias, dwarf sag and Hydrocotyle tripartita. I started with a group of 9 Cory’s and they have now grown to a group of 14. They spawn regularly and I usually get 1 that makes it out of each spawn. I don’t pull the eggs or anything. I also have a group of chili rasboras that I added as dither fish and they have also been spawning as that group has gone from 8 to 15. I run a heater and a small canister that gives a water flow down the length of the tank. I added a small sponge filter on the opposite end to help with some dead spots due to the length of the tank. I absolutely love my Cory’s. In addition to my Venezuelan Orange Cory’s in the long tank, I have a group of Osteogaster Schultzei (Venezuelan blacks) in another tank with my angelfish, and a group of Sterbai and a group of Eversi Cory’s in my big community tank. My favorite Cory tank though is my long shallow tank. I can really see the Cory’s interacting with the scape in that tank.
I agree! When I had no idea what I was doing, the old man who owned the fish store recommended I get was two corys for my tank. I was fascinated how they would also rest together under a "plastic" plant in my aquarium. I didn't even know they were juliis. I have learned a lot since then!
Im glad I found this video. I got a few Skunk Corys for a new 20 long I set up, as I didnt wanna over load the beneficial bacteria right away... 2-3weeks later I went back to get more, and they were out. As well as all 4-5 stores I checked over the following couple weeks. So I just decided to get a group of Panda Corys to help the 3 Skunks feel a little more comfortable. I can confirm the Skunks, and Pandas just accept each other. I've seen no difference in how they treat, or act around the other, and seeing this video gave me some extra solace in my decision.
That is great to hear! The "rarer" types of Corys can be hit or miss to find. You may see them all the time, and then not again for a year. I once wandered around a fish shop for 15 mins deciding if I should get a certain group of corys, and when I made my decision they were already scooped up and gone! So now, when I see a fish I already researched and know I really want... I don't wait.
@@FishLoft Yeah dude, Im still pretty new to the hobby so I didn't know Skunks were a little harder to find. Most shops have Pandas, Albinos, Sterbi, Bronze, and then theres ones (like skunks) Ive seen once, or ones only at one shop. It's hard to plan. A couple times I had a fish in mind, but would "settle" for something else if I couldnt find them. Like you said, if you see them... get them.
Nice video! I have a group of four Bandit Corys in my aquarium. They are all doing great with my collection relatively peaceful South American cichlids and a Bristle Nose Catfish.
A cory only tank is so rewarding. With no other fish swimming around, they are constantly out and sitting at the front of the glass. In my other "community" tanks, my corys mostly come out at feeding time and/or at night and hide away the most of the rest of the day. So interesting to see the different behavior!
We currently have 11 species of Cory's and are always on the lookout to get more. Our favorites are probably the Panda herd, we have a breeding colony of 10 of them. Next month I am hoping to get some Orange Laser and perhaps some Napoensis.
Have you had luck breeding the Pandas? I read Napos only get to about 1.6 inches....which would be a nice size for my tanks... is that what you have found? Thanks for watching!
I found that my corys really really love leaf litter to dig around in and look for copepods. I throw in dry oak leaves from my garden once a week and they love it. Not a clean look like this but its a fun behaviour to watch :)

I wanted to see how the white sand would affect the cory's overall color. Most Corydoras like to blend in with whatever sand they are on, and my corys on white sand are much lighter than my corys on black sand. Thanks for watching!
In my larger tanks I keep groups of otos, but they need a good deal of algae and biofilm to eat. In this tank, with the very low light levels I didn't think a group would have enough algae to eat. If he does okay, I might add one more so he has a buddy. Otos can be hard to keep. I have had some for ages, but some have died. They can have a very hard journey from the wild, to a middleman, to a fish store with little or nothing to eat and get very scrawny and sickly before you buy them. Thanks for watching!

Well, here is a roundabout answer. I have not used salt as a medication in my tanks, but here is what I know. Corys are scaleless, so when I had an ich show up on some of my cardinals, I used the medicine at half strength because of the corys, and my Pandas were fine. But different corys have different hardiness and sensitivities, for many reasons...if they are captive breed or are wild caught etc. Captive breed cories are most likely more adaptable and tolerant of changes in the water parameters, and might be able to withstand a low-dosage of salt medication. @FishLoft Thank you so much for your answer. Sadly, I don't have an extra tank or devices so I might just try a little dose and see how it goes.
What filters are you using?
I use internal filters, and currently I like aqueon (petco/amazon) for my main filter, they are inexpensive and do the job but don't produce a lot of water flow. So in my larger nano tanks I supplement with a small Nicrew filter (amazon). Hope that helps!
How long does it take you to do a tank build?
