How To Crochet A Foundation Chain Stitch:
1. Begin by making a slipknot (see video above if you don't know how)
2. Put your hook through the loop, then hook the yarn
3. Pull the hooked yarn through slip knot. This makes one chain stitch.
4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until you have the desired number of stitches. One loop will remain on hook.

I like the fact you split these concepts into separate videos. I started getting disillusioned my first time crocheting at the fact that I'd lose track of what I was doing easily (like I was trying to adjust my tension, count chains, turn my work, and it was too much all at once!). These make it a lot easier to digest the information and pace myself so I don't feel as overwhelmed!
Thank you, I thought that would help people to see it separately.
@KristinsCrochetTutorials Crocheting is something I'm supposed to learn for my Complex PTSD. There's so many patterns, and stitches you will always have something new to focus on. I've been so completely lost. I can now do slipknot and I'm onto foundational chains. Truly, thank you. I think I might have it this time ❤
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! I am so happy to have found your channel on UA-cam!!! I was about to throw out everything I had to learn how to crochet! If you can believe it, I bought the book called "Idiot's Guide to Crochet". It was above my level of learning! I could not for the life of me figure out how to make a chain. Looking at detailed pictures does nothing to teach me! BUT after watching you it clicked!! Watching someone is so much better for learning!! I can now make a chain and can not wait to see the next chapter!! God Bless you for saving this "Idiot".
LOVE IT...CROCHET SUCH A RELAXING HOBBY...YOU FORGET EVERYTHING....TRULY YOU WILL...GIVE IT A TRY YOU WILL LOVE IT..
Thank you so much! I actually just started doing crochet yesterday and looked up tutorials on how to do a chain stitch and none of them worked! I got so frustrated and now I found this and I’m happy with it! Thank you so much! I recommend for people new to crocheting.
Hello Kristin, my name is Angela and I am a 39/40yr trying to venture out into different avenue to create more streams of income. I have researched different videos on this technique and I have to say that your videos and the way you break them down and explain them are Awesome and Truly Appreciated! I watched the first 2 and now know how to slip knot as well as do a chain!! I so proud of myself because I almost gave up on the YT technique and was going to go hands on until I found you!!! I have subscribed as well as saved the videos so that I can become proficient in this crocheting. I currently am a Cna and have been for 20+ yrs. I have Clients that constantly ask me if I made my own hats and it drove me to venturing out into trying this out, I believe that God has blessed us all with Talent's and Skills and this is and will be 1 that I have to take on!!! Thanks again and please continue to upload more on this topic and technique!! May God continue to Bless your hands and all that you're doing!! Take care!!
I’m 49 & told by my adult kiddos that I needed a hobby. I also read in an article that crocheting or knitting was good for the mental health so here I am. My oldest child (non-binary AFAB pronouns they/them) already knows how to crochet. They told me about the Bella Coco videos. She was confusing me. Then I find your videos and now I can do a slip knot & a chain. I’m still working on the chain part. Thank you so much. I’m looking forward moving to the next video after I master the chain.
I've watched several this is the only one that made since and made me comfortable holding the yarn and hook. Thank you
After many failed attempts at crocheting watching other videos this helped me learn :)
Thank you so much for making this video! My mom was amazing at crocheting. I always wanted to learn it, but could not get the basic down. Number was for me!! And I was told by a teacher in school, give it up, you'll never get it! You helped me prove her wrong 40 years later! Thank you so much!!
Absolutely terrific. You speak clearly, explain every step, and go slowly. I have crocheted, on and off, for many years. Thanks to you, I’m learning that what I was doing was not the way it should have been. Thank you so much for helping me learn the correct way.
Yes it is very comfortable listening and watching her videos.
Thank you for showing me how to make a slip knot plus making chains I was doing it totally wrong now I got it!!
Thank you so much!!
Hi there I was looking to get into a new hobby and my sister suggested that I try crocheting so I joined Annie's caring crochet club of the month . But I couldn't quite understand their instruments not until I started watching your videos thanks for sharing . Your instructions are very easy to follow and understand thanks again .
After checking so many tutorials to learn how to make a simple chain stitch I got confused & I stopped the video to go look someplace else . I looked at about 6 videos & your tutorial was the easiest to understand. You did not give me a n entire lesson plan on crochet needles or you did not make me go out to the store to buy this special yarn or thread.I have some stuff here & I just want to know the basic steps wether or not I have this or I have that. Thank you for breaking it down in simple terms for me no nonsense . I'm a simple person I get it now.
I'm so glad you are talking about yarn tension, and getting used to what is most comfortable for you, and to try to keep your tension the same (whichever way you choose: tight tension, medium tension, loose tension) so that your stitches are uniform. That's so important, and even if you've been crocheting for years but took a few years off from crocheting and now are returning to the craft, it's important to get used to handling the crochet hook and crocheting the way that feels most comfortable for you, and keeping it uniform. Crocheting is so much fun, and your videos are so helpful for newbies and also for those of us returning to crocheting after a hiatus. Your videos are so helpful and you explain everything so clearly. Thank you!
So glad I found you! I’ve been crocheting since I was a kid, but my old hands haven’t been wanting to cooperate. I’ve had to change up the way I work. Thank you so much for helping me not to give up what my granny taught me to do over 50 years ago.
I've watched several videos and this was the only successful time I did a chain
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS HELPED ME I WAS STRUGGLING SO BAD BLESS YOUR HEART!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
I've been crocheting for 50 years, and learned on steel needles and thread weight yarn. A friend wanted to learn, but we are an hour's drive away from each other, so can't get together often for in-person learning (and I'm retired, she is still working!). Your videos on the foundation chain, sc, and double crochet are VERY clear and easy to follow, so are going to recomment she watches and then works along. For those who think the videos are too fast, they can always use the tool symbol on the UA-cam video to choose a playback speed. I recommend .75, or even .5, for learning. Good job, and thank you for these!
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been wanting to crochet and I remember doing the chain forever ago but I couldn’t remember how to get started but thanks to you I’m doing it again! I really appreciate the video!
THX SOOOOOOO MUCh!! I have watched 5 different videos today, this was the only one I understood
I love this explaination, saw a bunch of other videos before arriving to this one and i am definitely referencing you in the future. Thanks for simplifying this
Thank you I'm using your videos to help teach my granddaughter how to crochet she lives an hour away so we practiced when she's was here she will be watching some of your videos when grandma's not around appreciate all you do
Excellent video, thank you so much. It has taken me 5 attempts but I managed my first chain. Looking forward to viewing your other vids.
You’re an excellent teacher!
I appreciate how clear you speak and your video is very clear
I'm brand new to crocheting and your videos are excellent. I love your slow demonstration videos for beginners.
Thank you so much!! Your teaching method is at the right speed for me.
Thank you! I have had the darndest time doing a chain where I can actually see each individual stitch. This has helped tremendeously.
Thanks for showing how to hold the yarn! It seems basic, but I was struggling!
YW!!
trying to teach myself to crochet (after many failed attempts as a kid). This video already corrected 2 big frustrations! Thanks!
Thank you!!! This is super simple and clear.
Okay, so I’m super new to crocheting. I’m at the just chaining over and over again Til I get the hang of it. My question is, how to do you put away your thread & needle so that what you have chained, doesn’t come undone?
I hope that made sense.
This video so far was so super helpful.
If you cover this topic in a later video and I just haven’t gotten to it yet, I’m sorry. Like I said, I’m starting at the very beginning. 😀👍🏼
THANK YOU!!
You made this soo much easier for me to understand, I went through 3 videos b4 I found yours now I’m in a roll 😊
Love that you go nice and slow and have a great view of the technic.
I literally just went to Hobby lobby got some yarn and the perfect top hook to Match it and now I am here
Hi Kristen; thanks for this video I am helping my great granddaughter learn to crochet and have chosen this video to help get her started
Hopefully more videos are available by you for various other stitches she will soon need to know how to make
Your videos are so easy to follow and easy to understand what you are trying to teach
i like this because ur teaching Begners
Great explanation. Not sure if you are still on UA-cam but thanks for the video ❤
Trying to do this but I suffer with lack of concentration & understanding various institutions in a way I don’t understand ~ this is brilliant & I’m determined to make it happen. So glad I saw you. 🙏 J
I really couldn't crochet till I found this video. Thank you for explaining the mechanics so well!
Hi I like your video it's nice and easy after trying couple of times trying to crochet for first time
I love your videos they help me a lot. Thanks so much in God bless
Thank you. I am just starting out and want to learn to crochet I have now managed to do a chain 🤗
Thank-you so much for your videos, I find them to be very helpful!!
Thank you again for another super beginner video. I knew I couldn't be that dumb to figure this out. Your ability to slow things down and not combine 10 things in one video is to be commended. Thank you for being here to teach me like my grandmother was sitting next to me. I only wish I'd had the drive to learn from her when she was still with us. I want to make an afghan in the worst way. I figure if I start now in May, by fall I may actually have one when its cooler, lol.
Fantastic video, thank you for doing it slowly ❤
Your a great teacher
Thank you! I was trying to teach my daughter and my technique wasn't working for her, but when we watched your video your technique just worked well for her fingers.
You are an awesome teacher! Thanks for the clear instructions.
thank you!! home in "shut down" due to corona.... your videos/explanations are very clear!
Thank you 😊👍❤️. I love your teaching skills, I watched your video on making the slip knot, & did it easily on my first attempt. I've spent year's trying to manage it. Also my chain looks good to me too.
I'm determined to learn to crochet again after decades of not doing it. Your videos are super helpful & love the slow details 👍
Hi Kristin, I'm new to crocheting but your videos are so easy to follow I'm sure I'll be better very soon.
I'm new to your channel. It really helps to now know how to properly hold the yarn and work with the hook. Thanks,I'm now of to practice.
Good luck!
Thank you so much..I used to to be good at this but my memory fails me off and on. Hopefully this will help some.
So helpful thank you 😊

Oh that's why I'm having problems because my hope is always up thank
This was so helpful! Thank you!
❤ Thanku 😊
I’m learning a lot. But at this point I don’t even know if I’m doing it too right or too loose.
Hi I'm new to your channel and crocheting. I really like your tutorial style. You explain it really well for beginners like me.
Im glad it helped. I’m in the process of recording a bunch of new videos, so those should be up soon
Hi Great video. Is there a particular way I should be holding the chain as progressing. Your chains are very distinctive where mine our not. I can’t tell from one side to the other. Thanks Candace
You are the best
Really helpful tutorial.. thank you
Are tension rings you wear better when your a beginner please
Thanks for the video. I am a newbie. How do I stop myself from using too much tension? The loop on the needle is so tight I am having trouble getting the hook back through and of course my chain is loose then tight then loose then tight.
Honestly, it’s just with practice. I’ve been crocheting for so long and I still have a moment here and there where my tension is too tight.
this was a big help
Love this really helps me
Awesome!
I was wondering if my stuff is too small/thin my hook is 4.00mm/ US 6
Could you make a video of this and keep chaining please?
HEY I am a first time crochet
How do you make sure it’s tight??
I need some help with tension.
So I am having problems with the tension. It starts off tight but then gets looser as a go up. What am I doing wrong?
Do you crochet in the round video. I seem to only understand your ones!
How do you keep your chain from twisting? What am I doing wrong?
Been trying for weeks and struggling with tension. I hold it really tight and it won't go through the loops, I loosen the grip and the top of chains are so big compared to the bottom 😔
