Finis Jhung Ballet Technique: Pirouette en dehors from fourth position

The key to finding your balance when you make the pirouette en dehors (outside pirouette: turning to the R on the L foot) is to make sure you maintain your supporting side (supporting shoulder over the supporting toe) as you turn your preparatory plié to the back foot.
Whenever students ignore this preparatory movement and don't push the floor with both feet, they choose instead to lift the position foot up off the floor and bring it to the knee as they close their arms and try to turn their bodies around. This makes them unable to get on their leg and balance the turn.
You must always keep all your weight over the supporting foot - the foot you will turn on - and push down into the floor rolling through all your toes. To make sure you place your body correctly over the supporting toe, circle your arm first toward the supporting shoulder, then forward, and around to the back. It's what I describe as "completing the S curve. Your arm in first position is the bottom-half of the S. The circling of the hand and forearm creates the top half of the S. This must be coordinated with the turning of the plié.
Remember every movement you make comes from the floor, beginning with your toes, ending with your toes. It's not about the position, it's about the preparation that will put you on balance so that you can turn without feeling.
