    I wish I had caught on sooner. I was also in cardiovascular work back in the early 70's. I too saw open heart surgery, and was involved in a study regarding the effectiveness of medical versus surgical techniques. But here I am nearly 50 years later just catching on. I was never fully conscious that we are indeed herbivores. The bad science of Paleo lead me down the worst possible path. I was miserable. Luckily I'm made of something strong. One month in, and I hope to recover fully.

    After 5 years of treating myself for type 2 diabetes and fatty liver dysfunction I embraced a paradigm shift in to whole food plant based consumption. After 6 weeks my blood glucose stabilized to normal(102-112). I discontinued my $450 monthly Humalog/insulin habit. I drink only distilled water, at least 1.5 gallons per day. I have done a 48 hour water fast several times. At 62 y.o. I was reborn, I was transformed in to mind blowing adventure of losing 28 lbs. , waist size from 39in. to 32, memory significant improvement, I have more energy than my sugar addicted kids. Thanks to you and others who set me free, I know the truth. Mainstream media is, imho, demonically littered with propaganda aimed to brain feed youth with SUGAR ! Your vid is especially accurate, thanks.

      Apparently distilled water is not good for long-term consumption because it has no natural minerals or anything in it. It's great short-term, but shouldn't be your sole source of water for long periods.

    Thanks for bringing us this wonderful interview. I also caught on to plant based eating in the early 80s. Altho not perfect, along the way, I am so grateful that people like Dr. Klaper, Dr. Ornish, Dr. Pritikan, and others were getting the word out already at that time. Without them, It was sort of like being lost in a forest of people who not only don't understand, but actively hated you for even talking about this eating plan. I finally am 100% a McDougaller and can thank Dr. Esselstyn for finally giving me the "No oil" message. Yes it takes time, at least it did for me. I always try to remember that when I see my sick relatives refuse to listen. Now, I just love them and let them ask, if they want to know something. Even then, I just keep it simple, answer the question, and refer them to some links. I agree that the next generation is going to turn this thing around.

    Thank you, Dr. Klaper! You have AWAKENED me! AS OF THIS MOMENT, I am following a WholeFood, Plant Based Diet! I think I'll start with a few days of "Water-Only Fasting." Not sure what to do with the animal products in my fridge and freezer right now. I'll probably go look for a homeless person to take them to tomorrow. (It's after 11pm right now where I am.)

    • @secondact7151
      @secondact7151 7 років тому +12

      I started in January and have lost 50 pounds so far with thirty more to go. Last year I bought a half of a grass-fed cow twelve organic chickens and wild caught salmon and a lot of it is in the freezer. But this has turned out great. My 17 and 21 year olds are not seeing the light as far as vegan diet, so the freezer has become a visual indicator of how long they have for me to provide meat. Because they are being eased into it, they have not been very resistive. Instead of meatless Mondays in our house, I cook meat for them on Sunday's only ( but don't tell them I skipped the last two Sundays and they did not notice.) Slowly I think they are actually warming up to the idea from the comments they are making. My son today, "this vegan lasagna is actually not bad." They know when the freezer is empty, it will not be filled with meat ever again.
      So anyway the point for my very long reply is this--don't just get rid of your food. It takes time to make a change. For me it happened relatively fast as well after reading Dr. Greger's free bird flu book, but it still took time to figure out how to feed myself and two kids. I know you will see great benefits with WF, PB and eventually others you have influence over will as well. I've been talking about my experience on my UA-cam channel, Second Act. The things I have found most helpful are batch food prep, NutritionFact.org, and Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen App.
      Are you in Utah? I'm in Idaho.

    • @michaels4255
      @michaels4255 6 років тому

      Hmmm...although I am sympathetic, watching the aging boomer generation go vegan en masse will not necessarily increase its cool factor among the younger generation. "What, Grandma's going vegan? She's so cool! I wanna be like Grandma!" I had terrific grandparents, but I was hardly a trendsetter among my cooler age mates. Also, if boomers go vegan, the burden of paying for "pay-as-you-go" social security, and also Medicare and Medicaid (for the poor, but mostly funds the elderly poor) as more and more boomers live past 85, when medical expenses are especially high, will weigh more and more heavily on the younger generation. Where is your compassion? Animal consumption may be like smoking: by killing people earlier, it is a actually a net fiscal benefit for the taxpayer, even if the flesh-eaters and/or smokers are less healthy while they still live.

There needs to be so many more of those in this world.. however I'm curious if you address food addiction at your practice and get your clients help for that as I think that is a huge component of how people end up in these conditions. My wake up call was a couple of things....I'm 33 I love growing food and started a veg garden with my children who DID NOT KNOW veg comes from the ground!!! After a year of growing and eating veg straight from the garden we became somewhat self sufficient......then came the ex battery hens....we decided to rescue hens I was offered 3 ex battery hens free and jumped at the chance...we bought a lovely coop and put a few natural elements in place to make it fun...on collecting these hens I asked why they were in such poor condition missing half their feathers I was in shock my daughter cried they looked horrific.......I then done my homework....hens used for mass egg production with no room to move look it up it's horrific!!!! THEN the picture below them on the internet......KFC Chicken grinding machine with hundreds of dead chickens and blood on the floor......instant vegan never touched meat, dairy, eggs nothing animal based at all again........I have nothing against meat eaters at all what I will say is I have never felt healthier in my life....I had constant hormonal acne for years I tried tablets, antibiotics, different birth control pills to stabilise my hormones and creams probably 9 or 10 all from a doctor.......I became vegan and within 2 weeks my hormones evened out and after a month my acne had gone..... I've never had a breakout since!!! And the energy I've had is more than I ever had eating meat!!!!!!

    I am on a plant based plan and in two weeks lost 15 pounds. The only issue I am having is not eating enough fiber, and that makes everything I eat come out as as runny in the toilet. I am going to start steaming rice with the veggies to help with the digestion and the bacteria in my gut. I feel great, however it's disturbing how it just shoots right out of me ( so to speak). I am about 1-1/2 pounds per day, with running or weight training everyday. Also, I have decided to eliminate coffee and switch to tea.

    I've come the conclusion that the key at least for me to transition to vegan was to get off dairy. That is hard for so many, especially cheese, which appears to be addictive. But the meat flavors seem to be addictive to many people also. Meat-eaters could recognize that smoking was not good for you, but what is on your fork, I know I didn't have a clue. Most of us did not make the choice for ourselves to eat meats and dairy, but it is something we can change. But so many do not have the inner strength.
    But for me, my mother and sister died of breast cancer, so did my mother-in-law, my father died of Alzheimer's disease and my maternal grandmother with dementia. I was the care-giver for my parents, so I did see the results first-hand and I more than anything, did not want to complicate our children's lives trying to take care of their parents because we would not transition to plant-based. This is the power of love. They know we did it for not only our own health, but to be able to help them out when they need it not to expect them to become our care-givers.
    We've both lost 50 lbs. each, and if we lose more, my husband needs to lose more than I but I am finally at a normal BMi and am not considered obese any more. Our numbers are all good and my husband is post-cancer. He is doing so well, even got over life-long asthma going plant-based. He still isn't fully on-board but he knows he has had benefits and that plant-based tastes good. He finally has the energy to get up and out of his chair.
    I regret in no way going plant-based. I am vegan completely most days except about twice a year having an egg or two because I could not rework a recipe but I will finally figure it out. But am headed in the right direction.

    I'd rather have a mushroom burger now instead of a hamburger. I was plant based for two months. Went off of it. Wish I didn't. lol. I been back on it again for 3 days. Taking Acidophilus. I just was reading that it helps with Sinusitis as well. Why didn't doctors tell me it works for it instead of giving me antibiotics all the time? Which I think ended up messing up my stomach. When I was plant based My sugar level was at its lowest. Now its back up. But am anxious to do this again to feel better and be healthier. I believe this over Keto any day. When I eat cheese and too much of it. I get sick anyways. I was low on B 12's. Now I'm on 1,000 Mg a day. So Since I'm having to take it anyway. I thought what could I loose. :) I also have acid reflux and its bothering me with other issues. I even hurt all over from it. And get headaches. I believe this will help me. :) And I crave veggies and fruits. And I'm type 2 diabetic. Wish he was my Doctor. :)

    yes, i noticed similar things at harvard medical school and waterbury hospital. ~ 1:00 that the patients do not really get better on all of this medication and with all of the medical and surgical interventions. no doubt it is nutrition that is the key to health. the gateway to health is nutrition. adk, m.d.
    specifically i agree with 0:41 - 1:33. the healthcare system is not focused primarily on getting patients well. otherwise nutrition would always be emphasized especially in obstetrics, pediatrics, family medicine, and primary care internal medicine. and it would not simply be eat fruits and vegetables, it would be utilizing all of the sciences to clearly educate the reality of the effects of nutrition on health, longevity, quality of living, and prevention of preventable and modifiable chronic diseases, as well as for some acute diseases.

The main problem with restaurant is that the veggies would rott fast so it has to be used quickly. Many restaurant relies on freezers to keep food to cook, like frozen potatoes, and frozen meats.

    Genetics plays a major role in all of this.. I am 42 years old... Drank heavy for 20 years... Worked midnight shift and ate Taco Bell at 3 in the morning... I eat Bacon, Pork, Chicken... But I do say I eat all of this in moderation... I cut down on my drinking, I do eat more vegetables, but I still eat fried chicken, Pork Chops, and other meats... I've started lifting weight and I walk a mile a day... I lift 4 days a week and do cardio the other 3 days... I went from 270 lbs to 248 lbs in 3 months... I went to a physical for the first time in 11 years before making any of these changes... My cholesterol, liver enzymes, and blood counts were all normal... Doctor had nothing bad to say...Now there are others that can eat 2 pieces of bacon in a 2 month span and their cholesterol jumps to 190 lol... You just have to find what works for you and your body...

    Talking with people about eating meat one can see how we as humans can accept things by crafting a reality that's inconsistent with what actually happens. That's how all violence happens, it's rationalized and the first step is desensitizing people to their violence.

    Just as there is a paradigm shift in nutrition, there is also one regarding cattle. Deserts are growing and tundra is fading because there are actually too few animals. Current husbandry practices lead to overgrazing and the subsequent grain production for animals, wherein historically before fences were put up, tens of millions of herbivorous animals like cows, Bison, reindeer, and the huge host of other megafauna that have all disappeared used to cover the land preventing the encroaching deserts and sustained the tundras. Look into Holistic Land Management. It's biggest opponents are the cattle industry as is currently in place, which is heavily dominated by cattle feed lot operators and the grain producers who feel threatened by HLM. Like many things, you will know the truth by who opposes it. Just as modern medicine rejects plant based nutrition and fasting, so too does the cattle industry reject Holistic management.
    But what about all the animals if not to eat them? Let them live on open land and roam free as they once did just a few hundred years ago. They can take care of themselves. But with the land fenced off everywhere, this poses a separate but serious issue for grazing type animals. These animals in large herds till the land with their hooves, eat the new growth of perennials before they begin to oxidize on the surface (think of dead and yellow grasses in unmoved fields) and then deposit fertilizer right into the freshly tilled ground. They then move on and won't be back to the particular area for months and by then rains have come and the land has healed. Fences destroy this, unless the land is managed.

    I agree with the enormous benefits of a plant based whole food diet and lifestyle and it health benefits. However, your stance on the environmental impacts of eating meat Is nothing short of ignorant and unfounded. As a practicing environmental engineer there are no “real data to support climate change. I’ve been studying environmental changes on our planet for decades with a very open mind. There is absolutely no data to support human derived climate change over the last 5000 years. Keep in mind the ice age didn’t occur because humans ate to much meat or caused an adverse carbon impact from our automobiles or industrial equipment. It is simply that our planet goes through cyclical climatic changes due to gravitational impacts of neighboring planets as well as from various heat driven gases that emanate from stars such as our sun - just to name a couple of sources of climate variations over time.

      Avocados, nuts and seeds are healthy for you. Coconut flesh is high in saturated fat so should be consumed in limited amounts of not at all for someone with heart disease. Generally when plant-based Doctors talk about a "low fat diet" it is low in fat in relation to a standard Western diet which contains high levels of fat due to all the meat, dairy and oils. A whole food plant-based diet with some nuts, seeds and avocados is generally very healthy. The only exception would be for people with existing heart disease who may be best to avoid overt fats altogether (see the work of Dr Caldwell Esselstyn)

      @@SanTelmo1981 To the body though a fat is a fat correct? Let's just say you have elevated cholesterol over 200 while on a plane based diet. Would be wise to not even eat avocado or nuts in this case or are we saying that the body can distinguish the difference of good fats and bad? I say this because that is me. My cholesterol is 236 while being on a plant based diet and has been since the end of 2015. I add avocado or guacamole to several of my meals a week kind of has become a staple but I'm realizing that maybe it's not good for me to be eating them at all. I know my mother has elevated cholesterol and has for many years so it could be a hereditary trait. Who knows? This is why i ask.

      @@eppyz Well saturated fats are different to polyunsaturated fats, which is why nuts and seeds are recommended over coconut flesh. The fat from oil is particularly unhealthy as it is not bound up with fibre and antioxidants like whole plant sources of fat.
      If you are eating a whole food plant-based diet with no processed foods, oils or added salt and you have no other symptoms such as high blood pressure, then your cholesterol level may simply be what your body needs it to be for hormonal regulation. I'm on the opposite of you, a high carb, low protein, low fat whole foods vegetarian (ala Kempner diet), also grain-free (currently "beefing" up my gut lining with quercitin and L-Glutamine supplements for 4-6 weeks to be followed by a round of dairy-free probiotics). I was dismayed to learn recently that gluten proteins have a half-life of 3-4 months in the bloodstream! It will take 10 years to reach 1/billionth of their original content!! I guess I shouldn't have loaded up on it when I switched to vegan. Oops. Not all plants are good for you. I have started taking cod liver oil capsules and that's all I consume from the animal kingdom, did it for tooth health but may switch back to flax.

      Plants survival is dependent on pollinators in order to spread their seeds. Plants can also be harvested without killing the whole plant whereas animals can not. If you're worried about harming plants animal agriculture kills more plants than eating them. New research is also being done one how plants have receptors can can sense when they are being picked and the shut off sensation. Finally animals scream when in pain and in suffering. Go vegan

      a potential issue with high fat (I'm guilty of sometimes doing it, too) is that it increases blood viscosity but that's also a potential issue for high sugar, although I'm not sure what the difference is between sugar and natural sugars. All grains, including corn, oats and rice have gluten. Rice is like 5% gluten. I've started trying Klaper's recommendations for supplements to fix a leaky gut, I assume I've got one so 4-6 weeks of supplements shouldn't make/break my gut if it's not leaking but I assume it is, I also have IBS. How long did it take to cure IBS? His video is on youtube, just skip to near the end. He recommends 500-1000 mg each of Quercitin (to tighten the gut lining cell walls) and L-Glutamine to feed the new gut wall cells. Followed up after the 6 weeks with non-dairy probiotics, like coconut water based. I've switched to drinking hibiscus tea instead of berries, cheaper with lots more anti-oxidants as long as you consume it with some fat to make the anti-oxidants more bioavailable. I might try green smoothies at some point, just have a cheap blender, though, it might still be able to handle it.

      Getting one's diet right is a very complicated affair, it seems. It's a very personal process as we're all different. I may eventually settle on an 80-10-10 approach but for now, am limiting protein to about 5%. But I keep screwing up and eating foods that are high FODMAP, like avocados! lol, healthy fat just rough on the gut. I'm gonna have to be more disciplined about it. Sounds like you've really learned a lot about how your body handles foods. Elimination diets really help and although that's what I did, it wasn't my intention. I just got rid of foods that were causing me issues. But now my weight has dropped way too low and I have to revisit my diet to ensure greater calorie intake, my metabolism may be going up faster than I thought due to my joining a gym and going for really long hikes, etc. I may need to ratchet up my fat intake for calories.

    • @1too3fore

      Now, I'm starting to add foods back to see if my gut has improved starting with lentils, great source of fiber and less expensive and less sugar. Also, started my ginger bug back up to add homemade probiotics, a lot less expensive than store bought.
