This has been a fantastic series. David is such a likeable guy and so talented. His endless devotion to going the extra mile is so amazing. The paint looks great and those rock rails are flipping tremendous. Great job gentlemen! Can't wait for next video.
The world needs more people like him. The world would be a much better place...
I guess you could say he went the extra step
$79! Ouch! My harbor freight stud welder with slide hammer was only $90
God bless that man, he is donating not only his truck but his time and home to help friends and a good cause.
I love how he just built those steps out of scrap metal he had lying around. This is the kind of stuff I want to do once I have a house haha
You figure the house will come with a scrap metal pile...?
Go Aggies!
Lexington & Concord Gig Em’ 👍🏻
Buckhorn Cortez depending on the house you buy, it might 😂
I do this cause im poor and I love it more the buying stuff
I really enjoy this build series with David. You should keep him around for other projects.
Truck looks great - but those rock rails are incredible
Right let's see it off road tested now 💪
Pleeaasseee tell me you're going to buff that truck out after the paint has cured. Will look 100x better.
I second this. You'll get that mirror-like shine you're looking for.
Needs a buff in a bad way! Would make a night and day difference
You going to buff the paint? There’s no clearcoat
@@Boringunguy even single stage paint needs buffed after application. There's always orange peel after curing- so yes you would buff the paint to produce a finished shine.
@@mattshansen9814 yes it will 😂 If the paint surface is uneven from application and curing (which is always the case), then buffing it will smooth out the paint. Smooth paint (both 2 stage and single) reflects lights better than bumpy/uneven paint. Better light reflection results in a better shine. So yes, single stage WILL definitely look better buffed.
Next time try tack welding on the screws, that way you can just knock them off and do some light grinding to smooth it out. Much better than drilling into the body and using a dent puller.
@Mr. Labreck Also if there is a extreme crease like that make sure to put the screws just on the crease as it will follow it and all come out. Also if you have the money invest in a porta spot stud gun. Best investment you will make if you have a lot of dents to remove
@@thegamingchanel100 As someone who used this same dent puller they did on _my_ truck, I must agree that a stud gun would be the way to go.
@Mr. Labreck Great advice I wish I had when I did exactly what these guys did lol
@rumpleforeskin73 Yes i agree 100% put dentless paint repair is a art that takes a lot of time to learn its not like being able to pull out a dent and bondo it. plus if you hire someone it can be upwards of 700 dollars just for a big dent in the side of a truck you can buy a new door and paint it for that
I used that kind of tool in 1981. Never again.
Roll some bed liner in and coat the rock rails with it also!
I love all of Tommy’s videos. He is my favorite TFL host by far!!! Sorry Roman, but you did raise an awesome son!
Yeah, he just seems to really be growing into the job nicely.
He doesn't suffer from the "old man" syndrome you get from Roman. Thank god
Good job guys but your supposed to put multi clear coats on it. That isn’t a single stage paint. It’s going to go bad very fast without the clear.
I'll triple check with David and Kase but we bought single stage paint on purpose for this project! -Tommy
@@TFLclassics If indeed it's acrylic enamel (aka "single stage") then my only criticism is that it needed ta be laid on heavier. Similar ta when applyin' clearcoat/topcoat, ya gotta go for the "wet look" as I & others call it...lay it on heavy...but yet not ta the point that it starts ta sag &/or run...it's a fine line though & most people tend ta opt ta go a bit too light when sprayin' because they're worried about it saggin' or runnin' (which it definitely can & will if it's laid on *too* heavy of course).
@shumpie41 I'm not sure if you can wet sand and buff metallic paint. I tried it once and ended up re painting the entire truck. The guy at PPG said you could but I had different results.
@@jimmotormedic your right not a good idea to sand or buff single stage paint. Lay down the paint the way you want to look and leave it alone and it will last for years.
If you sand the headlights and taillights with 1000grit sandpaper and then spray them with 1k clear coat they will look better than new!
Just did this to mine. Can confirm
Keep up the good work. This is good content, turning into one of the best TFL series.
I really love the work of the children’s home. Great project!
Is there anyone cooler than David? That guy is awesome!
when the truck rolls out, you can feel it like a second rebirth
What y’all did with this truck is awesome so far !!!👍👍👍👍
Wet sand and polish now. 👌🏼
These are great videos! Have y’all changed all the fluids, like in the diffs? Keep ‘em coming.
TFLclassics Is my favorite! Kase Is the man! I really like all the fabrication and DIY stuff that you guys started doing once he came on board. Kase and Tommy great team and great video! Looking forward to more...
God Bless you guys for helping those in need through giving willing Charity!!!!
The truck looking amazing keep up the good work!!!
Awesome job. Nice to see some real world affordable stuff you can do in the ole barn anywhere.
The best way to learn, get an old truck and just start working on it. Is it perfect, no, but you learned, and the next one will be better.
Whats the paint called and paint code for that new paint?! It looks amazing!
2:09 a proper tack weld dent puller is better especially on pointy corners and keeping it from have a hole in it
Wow. Great turnout! Those rails look amazing and I liked the whole background story of where they came from! Great truck, excellent job and good to know that you guys are restoring and auctioning it off to support a good cause! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼😊
Definitely needs a good buffing, but way better than the flaking clear that was on there before.
Some plastic polish from Meguiar's will help with those taillights, just like you guys did with the headlamps
You’re doing a great job that truck went from a pos to respectable to drive. Keep it up and I’m sure you will get a lot of money for your charity. TFL Keep doing what you are doing.
Dang that looks amazing! I'm looking at a 96 F-150 project so I might be doing some of this.
Damn you for eating Popeyes, you know how hungry i am for chicken strips now?
Love the rebuild series so far and the paint job and rock rails / steps looks great!
The truck is looking great now. I would happily drive it anywhere.
Great project for a great cause. I hope TFL will continue to produce DIY videos with David. He is absolutely amazing.
The paint needs to be sanded and polished. You can also polish the lights on it to make them look brand new.
Great job guys, paint looks good. Can’t wait to see the truck rolling down the road.
Key word is "better" as good is a no dents and feathered plus cut and buff... that I have a feeling will come with time. It is like looking into the past and going into the future at the same time. A real nice job..
David is a true gentleman and craftsman. Great series.
Nice video and lots of useful information. I have a 92 Ford truck that I got a few years ago. When I got my kayak cord caught in the tailgate, I found out by accident that those tailgates come off very easily!
I LOVE videos of restoration of trucks!!! ❤️
You have to drill multiple holes like that for a dent that size. Just make sure to wed them up and grind flat, treat the inside of the door with corrosion protection to prevent rust! Y’all did good for beginners!!
most realistic painting I've seen of a truck/car! Great video!!
David is such an over the top generous person. It's amazing how much he cares. I wish we had more people like him.
@@mattshansen9814 What "downfall of this series?" And what part are you disagreeing with? That he's a nice guy or we need more people like him?
Guys.... just wetsand it now and polish it!
the paint is very dull, should have some clear coats on it now. Best part was the rock rails.
paint the tailgate letters red, blue, or white to make it proper
your new friend david is awesome. everyone needs a friend like that
Spray the inner wheel wells with Bedliner when you do it. Great durable coating and it adds to the lines of the vehicle when the wheel wells are dark.
Those rails/steps look better and more robust than aftermarket. I'm already starting to want this truck.
Wow paint looks awesome! That’s the exact color I want on my jeep
Use glexo cold glue for dents next time
Really great series. Nice to see TFL crew turning those wrenches. Perfect project to learn these skills on.
Orange peel gang 🤘
Make sure u don’t get chicken grease on that paint
Wow, I love this series! Might be tempted to throw a bid in on it for my girlfriend. We both love this body style of Ford! Love the rock sliders too! They are so unique and cool looking!
David did an awesome job on those side steps....
Super job on those steps David,..well done and Thumbs up, absolutely.
Careful eatin' those cookies Tommy,..you might get FAT!
I LOVE YOUR TRUCK SO MUCH IM GONNA MAKE MINE LOOK EXACTLY LIKE YOURS just its gonna be the f150 version with the strait 6
The '89 looks real good to me also. Nice Job Boy'z❕ I shore like the runn'n boards he made. I shore need a short set for my '87 regulator cab & flatbed......You want to sell that
L-Tank?
Nice paint job Kase. The hummingbird is always eating. Awesome step rails David a little WW2 in them is cool. Nice job guys.
I like the colour! Good job boys
Now all it needs is a set of manly tires
Paint matching wheels with chrome beauty bands and center cap with a set of 33s! You would have a real truck then💪🇺🇸
This is an awesome project TFL I just wish you were raffling it off instead of auction, I think a lot more people could enter to have a chance at it, I would definitely enter but don’t have the funds to try to buy at auction, i think it really limits the number of people able to give money to the cause. One winning bid, or thousands of donations for a chance to win the truck.
I applaud you for keeping the 87-91 front end. Almost everyone that restores those years right away change it to a 92-96 front end.
You need to let that guy have a day in that McLaren! Pass on the giving! I hope somebody that's doing well steps up to donate a good chunk for this truck.
Nice job y'all, truck is coming along nicely. Love Tommy's shirt btw. Keep up the great work y'all
Holy gunsmoke! That paint came out pretty good. I had to build my own rock sliders too very nice
The truck looks great 👍
You literally have a welder, you should not drill a hole and put in a screw to pull the dents, you could have welded a stud to grab. Then just geind them off. No holes. Or get a paintless dent repair kit
David us a great skilled guy
That dent puller is really effective but the way I always used it was as a full kit. I dont even know if they still make the one I used but it has a big hot-glue-gun looking thing that you would load with a copper rod-looking rivet. You'd then use the gun to tack weld the rivet to the body and then you'd use the slide hammer (the thing you used) to pull the dent. It's the exact same concept but without the holes being drilled.
Why didn't you just pull the door panel off and knock the dent out with a hammer and a stick? Really enjoyed this series, the truck looks good. I like the steps, David is a cool cat.
The world needs more people like David in it. Great job guys, truck looks great!
no offense, but the pain job looks like trash. orange peel, its more like pineapple skin. good effort, but you needed some more experienced painter advice and instruction on gun technique
Body work all comes down to how much time and money you can afford it, and we are very limited in both.
@@kasevr doesnt take any extra time or money to watch one youtube vid on proper gun handling, tuning, and spray distances lamo
@@whatchu_talkin_john_willis I've done research but its still easier in theory than in practice. I've been painting simpler projects for years and painting a 30 year old long bed truck in two days was a challenge
All it needs is some paint buffing but it looks great none the less 👍🏻
What a great job!👍🏼
Dang I miss my 89' half ton LB. It was Maroon Red.
Just skim coat the little dings it doesn't take much to fill in the shallow dings.
Lol why would you drill holes in a door where you can reach the back side with less effort than driving to harbour freight.
Not perfect, but a spectacular transformations. Becomes one the best looking 1989's on the road.
Back in the 70's we had a shop in my city that just sprayed cars and light trucks. You did all your own body work, prep and masking except the windows. You drove it in...they did the final masking...sprayed with primer ... and sprayed two coats of paint and sent it to a booth to bake. They had 12 standard colors to choose from and nobody clear coated back then. Any car was $250 and light trucks for $300 and they charged an extra $50 if you wanted inside the hood, trunk and some of the hidden places painted, if you were doing a complete color change. They operated 24 hrs per day and processed about 16 vehicles per day. Those were the days! LOL
Honestly, when I first saw that spray primer can, I was worried you guys would use spray paint for the whole project. Things got serious quick though and this thing turned out great. Seriously, well done y'all. 👍👍👍👍
I always shake my head at the people who say they could have done a better job. Well, why don't you? If you've ever worked with metal flake paint, much less any shade of gray or silver, then you would appreciate that though this job wasn't flawless, it's pretty great considering the materials. If you could do a factory quality paint job with stuff like this, then shops wouldn't be starting at $4000 and going up from there.
What kills any possible criticism from me is the fact that they were more or less donating everything for the good of kids. Most people wouldn't give ten minutes of time to help anyone.
Well, $600 not counting a compressor capable of the necessary CFM at the required PSI, plus a decent gun, plus access to a large indoor space, plus a live-in metal fabricator. Don't get me wrong, I liked the series, but if you didn't have any equipment prior to beginning, the cost would be significantly more. Good content though.
Mountain States sounds like a great cause, well done guys!
If you boys need any help modding out the injector pump and tuning it for performance gains on gun smoke. Hit us up with our stage 1 idi kit we can get you to 250ish hp and 450ish ft/lb of torq on stock injectors, injector pump, and all without a turbo. If you go the turbo route we can get you anywhere from 320-900 hp and 500- 1300 ft/lb with the top notch parts from our buddys at classic diesel design. All depends on your budget. These motors get a bad rep. for being very doggy and slow. The aftermarket is small compared to the 7.3 powerstroke. But like you've said they are all mechanical (except the fuel cut) you can make big reliable power with these your just going to spend more compared to a powerstroke for the same gains. A worth wile trade off for the mechanical reliability and ease of repair in my opinion. My shop truck has 900,000 miles on it and damn near stock compression ratios and on its second injector pump still on the factory injectors if that doesn't impress the idi sceptics then i don't know what will. - Ant Slade. P.s. - first thing to do is cut that soup bowl out of the air filter hat, its free and will give you greatly improved air flow with a small but noticable 5ish hp gain. Also if your going to turn up the injector pump by yourself without modifying the gov. spring and fuel cut spring be sure to go no more that 3 flats ( that's a half a turn clockwise) as anymore than that will actually cost you power, fuel economy, it will smoke like hell and an over fueled truck can cause overheating issues and worse cylinder wash down which WILL end in engine failure and will likely run away on you. Hope you or someone finds this comment helpful.
Sorry guys I cringed when you did the screw dent pulling. You could pop it out by hand or small pry bar with the door panel off. Next time get the 99 dollar welding pin dent puller. Also you could easily make patch panels for the cab corners and bottom of doors with some simple cuts, a sharp edged table or side of a lift or 2×4. Use another 2x4 long ways and bop the metal over gently but firmly until desired angle.
FYI.... just bought new taillights for 40 bucks for same truck - woulda made such a difference in the end.
The US Navy Seabees used those Pure Steel planks to build those Runways in WW2. I’ve seen those planks at the Seabees museum in Davisville Rhode Island TFL
I applaud the effort, but the paint job could have came out way better with the right cap, the right air, and the right technique technique. Single stage metallic bypassing basecoat/clearcoat is very tricky. The makeshift spray booth looked dangerous.
Tarps & tea cup hooks make a garage into a paint booth well. 👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸 those rock rails are awesome. 👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸
Buddy Holly shitbox build😂 Seriously though this is awesome! I love watching old ford builds, but knowing this one is being built for such a good cause really warms my heart. It's always good to know there's good people left in the world!
David looks like Mr. Robot in the Mr. Robot series 🤔
Sooooooooo can I order some rock rails like this or what??!?!
Great paint job, and those rock fenders are beautiful.
Next time use a slide hammer that pulls dents with hot glue
That was such an easy dent. You could have pushed it out by hand from the inside 90% with a diy soft wood paddle. 0$.
I guess you got bored of the body work because you left quite a few dents untouched. I don't blame you sanding body filler sucks.
Question for any auto body painters out there.
At 7:45 he is stopping the spray at the end of the panel.
You want to keep going once you are past the panel and then stop the spray?
Right?
The way he is painting it will make the paint on the corners thinner, right?
I am not trolling these guys, they did a hell of a job and I love it when people actually build and fix stuff.
It’s just a technique question.
Thanks!
PSP was used in Vietnam also.
If I could add a suggestion I'd put the 95-97 f350 250 aluminum rims on it they look sweet and have the factory look
I'm surprised you didn't use a $10 Harbor Freight paint gun like most of the other DIY paint jobs on UA-cam. Use the gun for one job and throw it in the trash! It turned out good, guys!
