      This is my rescue to a T. Major anxiety, everything the same except for barking (she does not bark all). I’ll throw in a monkey wrench and say my dog is not very motivated by treats, toys, or food. She will “train” if she wants, when she wants, for as long as she wants. She doesn’t like kongs, or bones (she has many but relocates them around the house only). She has terrible recall and only comes to you if she wants something. Will run into the street if not on a leash. She has flunked out of dog training for simply not wanting to engage or for being wild. She’s turning 5 (not exactly sure of age) this year. Please help 😢. She’s family to us and I want her to live a fulfilled, happy life.

    There isn’t any other training videos quite like this. My 18 month old male intact 100 pound GS still behaves like this pup. I’m doing my best to desensitize him to anything with wheels, people, dogs, cats, squirrels etc. he is crate trained. I really appreciate you showing the raw realities you’re facing with a breed that loves to chase and bite things. You’ve given me a new Hope! My entire family wants me to sell him. But I don’t think anyone would buy him the way he is right now and he would end up being put down. So I’ll continue on doing my best with a head halter taking him every night to a park with high-value treats and try to desensitize him after one hour of hard exercise.

    I’m so happy right now. After watching the 1st video and now this one, I feel validated. Thirty years ago, I trained dogs using what worked for me and my Dobermans. I used many of your techniques including those you demonstrated for leave it, look at me, down, etc. I did very small steps at a time and it worked so well. Thank you! I can assure everyone watching that this technique really works well. You never need to yell, intimidate and especially never *hit* your dog. There’s no excuse for EVER hitting your dog.

    If Moira doesn't do well in crates, she'll just be a bed dog. She looks like a great cuddler.
    Separately, this series has already started to help me with my dog, Ginny. I am teaching her "let go." She already knows "leave it" and "look at me." I've also realized that it's easier to train a dog on what to do instead of what not to do. My dog, Ginny, is very reactive. When we walk on the trail, she tries to lunge at people. For a long time, I was just pulling her away and saying firmly, "No." Now, I've been teaching her that every time I stop on our walk, she should automatically sit. So we stop, I put her in a sit and love on her/give her lots of praise for being a good girl. I make her stay in the sit position until the people pass with some distance, and then we resume our walk. This has also helped her to stop becoming overly excited because that's when she starts to pull on her leash the most.

      Prong collars are not harsh corrections. If you get a good brand (hermes sprenget) Otherwise the dog would be yelping, crying etc. prong collars distribute even pressure instead of choking a dog out with a flat collar and potentially damaging their trachea. You just have to know how to apply it properly. E collars (good ones not shock collars) are great to get a dog’s attention as well. I wish people would educate themselves and realize they are tools that can help dogs to train them. So many dogs who otherwise would’ve been euthanized have been trained with them. And you don’t have to use them for the rest of their lives. You should open your mind and not limit a dog’s training. Upstate canine academy on youtube has many videos educating people about prong and e collars and demonstrating tom davis helping reactive or aggressive dogs.

Not fun when you’re a younger teenage girl who’s super small for your age. He’s not aggressive, but he jumps and bites when he gets overexcited. I weigh less than him, so nooot good. He knows sit, down, and bed (placement command), so that’s a plus, and he’s good on leash. It’s playtime when all that falls apart, and he goes crazy. He’s a sweetheart, but he’s still a puppy, and has that over-the-top, hyper mindset.

    For me the thing that helped the most with the crate training was turning the crate into a dark cave/den with a cover while leaving the door open, started doing that when she was only a few months old and now every time its nap time or sleepy time she shuffles into the crate on her own to sleep. Its helped build that association when it comes time to run an errant or similar when she has to be kept in the crate for a bit while I'm away in that she will just go to sleep for the duration of time shes put in the crate.

    • @colleenanne4032
      @colleenanne4032 3 роки тому +1

      That's what we did too. We pushed the crate up to the corner in our bedroom so two sides were secure and we left the door open so she could go in and out. Then we kind of turned it into a game, we would put a kong with peanut butter and her food in it (put it in the freezer first so it took her longer) she would go in literally one minute intervals with the door open, then shut and for her meals.She had been bounced around homes and was frantic in the crate but she was also excellent at getting into things that were dangerous for her if we didn't watch her every second. And since we had jobs and school I needed her to be unsupervised and safe or 2 to 3 hours at a time we needed her to be comfortable in the crate.. It took about a month but it was important that she was comfortable and safe.

Thanks to you I have been able to train my 2 dogs (Pomeranian and jack russell/ schnauzer terrier). They are not perfect but with your help they behave so much better than they once did. Thanks ! By studying your videos with Kona, and watching your work with Moira, I feel like she'll be a great doggo. I admit I don't always find him consistent, also with his verbal cues, which creates confusion, and his timing is off sometimes. However, he is a good trainer in general and I love his positive training, which I prefer over 'balanced' trainers and trainers who work with physical corrections. But I do miss some strictness and following through. With inertia he had to lure her in a sit and to come with him for months, instead of her listening to the command. There wasn't much progress for a long time and for a trainer of his stature, that should not have been the case.
      But his theory is sound and though it takes more time than for example with harsher training or an e collar or prong (which I hate) you create a way more stable dog that knows he can trust you and that loves to be around you.
      So yes for his methods, but as a trainer he does have flaws. Yet I take away a lot from his training and I do use it. Because positive training works. And I'm happy this dog is getting a chance with him, and for him it will be a good learning experience too. Rescues are very different than green puppies.

      @haydeltae5887 3 роки тому

      @@liennuh same-I find his timing is off a lot and I think he’s lacking in clarity and crispness with a lot of his training. The amount of time between his marker word and when he actual rewards sometimes drives me nuts, plus all the hand gestures. Also I definitely have different goals than he does-I rely much more on management than training every little issue, and I prefer to focus on competition obedience vs pet dog training. But I 100% love that he’s a relatable person for a lot of pet dog people and that he is teaching some pet people a kinder way.

    • @Kelly-gj5xr
      @Kelly-gj5xr 3 роки тому +2

      @@liennuh Yeah his timing and mechanics are terrible. Almost hard to watch. He is super unclear especially to newbie viewers that when he has 'trained' something he has actually just started something and has many weeks of proofing that behavior, with distractions and increasing criteria, and finding ways to generalize it to other contexts. He trains like a new dog owner that has done some research and watched a few youtube videos, not someone who's been a trainer/'expert' for years. This is how I trained sit and down when I had no idea what I was doing, and had no idea about markers, timing, etc. This dog is smart so she will figure it out, but it's not good training. For example, in a 2min period he used the same generic hand signal along with three different commands (sit, let go, stay); used a different hand signal he hadn't taught yet for sit; asked her to 'look at me' and rewarded/released the second she looked away lol; asked her to 'leave it' in a context when she clearly does not know it well enough to succeed, with the toy; etc. Obviously everyone makes mistakes, but these are simple mistakes that a good trainer wouldn't make, and if they did, would be able to explain it so that people watching would get it right. For a smart dog, even if your timing isn't perfect, some things they will eventually figure out; for others things, its super important. And it's always better to be as clear as possible to the dog, so that it is easier for them to succeed. On another note, there are also many other in-between steps you can take for crate training if your dog seems to be showing some separation anxiety. There are so many better and more knowledgeable R+ trainers to watch to get more efficient training and even slightly more comprehensive information. I see why people like him, he is very relatable - but the way he acts is like your friendly neighbor you're seeing train their dog, not an 'expert'.

Seeing and relating to everything he is experiencing and realizing that I’m not a total failure and that like Zak you have to preserve and train, train, train. Here in the this series, training is not always perfect and a process whereby Zak is perfect when imperfect. Well done! Encouraging to all of us.

    Zak I just subscribed recently to your channel. I left a comment on the first episode of this reality training. I don't know how to thank you enough for how you train dogs. I totally resonate with your sensibilities regarding dog training. I'm the woman who has a service dog that I owner trained. I used very old techniques because I trained for 20 years but I'm 62 years old now. Back then we used E collars. of course using them correctly, and no treats were ever part of being a dog trainer. it's really come a long way and I love how you represent positive reinforcement training, because you stick in there with reality. What it's REALLY like to train a dog. And you show here's what you do if it goes wrong. Finally. I have been on UA-cam for years I cannot relate to any of the other very well known dog training channels. I just don't flow with what they're about and most of them show positive reinforcement training with a perfectly trained dog on the task they are showing on the video. it doesn't show a realistic dog. A dog that isn't perfectly trained when you get it and how to keep going in little increments to achieve results. You are a gift to me as I am going to be training my new little service dog. And I need it to be simple to understand and simple to know how to properly attain excellent results. I'm so excited Now I feel ready when my new dog comes that I will rescue to become my service dog. Have a good evening !!

    I appreciate how REAL this is. I think many of us get frustrated because we arent dog trainers and seeing someone who always has every answer and a perfect dog who listens every time makes it easier for us "non trainers" to give up when what works for one dog doesnt for another. I'm dealing with that when Moira learned so quickly to "let go" and I sprained my wrist and had bloodied, blistered hands after attempting the same with my pit bull BUT, seeing you trouble shoot and adjust for each dogs unique temperament and personality shows me that it CAN work, I just have to reevaluate and adjust for my own enthusiastic baby. Just remember we support you, because I know I cant be the only one thinking this. You got this!!👍👏❤
