Finally, a dog like mine. I am ecstatic to see these videos. At home, Sully is an absolute gem, but out in public......ohhh noooo.....When my little sweetheart sees another dog, he completely loses it. There is no reasoning with him, there is only holding on for dear life and getting him out of the situation. It has become even worse after a terrible altercation with another reactive dog. And i’m 100% sure my apprehension at seeing dogs translates right to him and makes it worse. I will follow this case closely. Thank you, Zac. You are helping me to be a better dog owner.

We have a similiar problem.My dogs actually a service dog in training.We don't have money so I'm using these to train.My baby is amazing at alerting and bringing my meds but if he see's a person or animal he just goes crazy, barking jumping biting.I want to be able to take him in public where I need him most instead of never leaving the house at 15 years old so these videos are amazing

I was watching the video while my 18mo old labradoodle was sleeping. When Zak made the burrito squeek my pup jumped up and went searching for his burrito ( we have the same toy) When he found it he brought it back to me and I had to pause the video for a play session.
Oh such a good puppy.
You know that burrito has a toy inside if your dog ends up tearing it open!

What I would actually really like to see next is you training with an adult chihuahua. Like a cliche angry little chihuahua. I feel like, even tho people see them as beginner dogs (maybe because of their size), they’re quite hard to train.

He can have mine in training haha. Two year old and very reactive to EVERYTHING. Dogs, bikes, cars, people. But I'm working with him with a positive trainer who's certified. It's hard, but he's progressing. If he was a big dog though, I would have a very dangerous dog.
Ive had many dogs. He is the tiniest one I ever had and the most 'dog' I ever had. I've never experienced a dog so difficult.
I alsmost rehomed him because I couldn't handle his reactive behavior. At home he was great, but walks were mostly me having to have eyes like a hawk, and crying. I was so stressed and I didn't know how to help him not being so stressed all the time. My insecurity made him ten times worse. But then I found a positive trainer and we are finally on our way to becoming a team. His behavior has changed so much and I have changed too

I’ve trained a few chihuahuas since I foster them and the biggest difference I see in Moira is that they do not see playing as much as a reward. They pretty much only like treats (maybe pets) and since they are small even then they can get full fast and get disinterested in the treats. Moira catches on so quickly tho! I would love to see training with a more stubborn breed.

To me, it is so reassuring to see that Zak struggles too with training Moira. It shows me that it is normal to struggle, ad that it is a normal process to experience.
People who get energetic dogs need to see this show! Not only does it give you a good idea of what happens if you don't begin training early but it also shows people that it is never too late to start training.

Totally, totally relatable. Two steps forward, huge step back. I'm slowly learning some tricks to prevent being over threshold for my pup. He is fearful of car rides because it reminds him of the sound of the plane ride he had when he was younger, so by the time we get to our destination he is so wound up from anxiety and excitement that he starts screaming his head off on the top of his lungs. Work in progress!

I would reinforce the second he calms down.. and build on that with lots of patience.
Hi Zak! The engagement and viewership of this series has been insane and your recent grown as a UA-camr is well deserved! It’s not that your previous training series weren’t helpful- they were and I learned a lot about dog training from watching- but with this series, I finally see myself in your video. I hope this isn’t taken the wrong way but, seeing a professional run into the same obstacles I do as a new dog owner is very reassuring as a new dog owner. I can’t wait to see how Moira has evolved in the time you two have had together!

I say “no” sometimes🤔 But I try to make it a constructive “no” rather than a disciplinary “no” if that makes sense. True though, that the emphasis should be on what a dog is doing right and to build from there! So glad you like the video!

Zak is an excellent trainer for teaching "wanted" behaviors. However, dogs should be corrected for potentially dangerous "unwanted" behaviors such as: counter-surfing, lunging, jumping, and dog, people, and/or children on bikes reactivity. In short, "positive only" training will not correct or manage unwanted behaviors practically nor efficiently when you need it. If a dog owner doesn't say "No" to their dog and correct dangerous behavior with balanced training, that owner's dog becomes a threat to other responsible dog owners. My dog has been attacked by irresponsible and unrealistic dog owners such as yourself, and your comment reads misguided at the very least. These short and edited videos in controlled environments are not an accurate representation of dogs that have reactive issues and are over threshold. It is a 24/7 issue that has overwhelmed and impacted owners in a big way. Correction should be immediate and consistent. Unwanted behavior outbursts are distressing for the owner in an impactful way. A rainbow and sunshine approach to correcting reactive behavior doesn't get it done. I know this from experience!

@D M, the problem with "No" is that many dog owners do not offer any "correct" behaviour for their dog to do instead of the unwanted one, nor do they have enough bond with the dog or at least a physical control over it. The focus of the positive reinforcement (as shown on this channel) is on building the bond while teaching the dog an easy, low input/high reward thing to do, and then using it *together with* prohibition. It surely is not about letting a 100+ lb puppy interact with the world unsupervised. Also, I am sorry for your experience with ignorant doggos and their people
I have a German sheperd/blue heeler mix. She is JUST like this dog. Very reactive with other dogs (she was attacked by our neighbor dog as a 4 month old puppy). She is very hard to calm around strange dogs she sees or hears, but can get along with new dogs in a VERY controlled environment. She knows her basic commands, but once you take her outside, she won't listen and won't take treats. I am very glued to this series, I want to help her, I just don't know how. Thank you so much for making this!
PS- Lucy (gsd 7 month Rescue) is working hard along with Moira. She has learned Let Go, watch me- make eye contact, crawl is in progress, and working on shake (trying to keep with with Moira here 😅). We have been acclimating to pups and working on reactivity by watching the neighborhood dogs go by from our porch.... and munching on chicken😂.

Our rescue is just like this. It was very comforting to hear you talk about how the over threshold stuff can be overwhelming. I had a little cry the other day when our rescue was over threshold on a walk (we got into a multi dog situation I couldn’t get distance from). It takes a lot of patience and understanding and not everybody can see that you’re trying your best to manage. This series is so helpful!
Omg this is my dog exactly! She wasn’t even a rescue , we got her as a puppy but with the lockdown we didn’t get to socialize her to other people or pets… I’ve got my work cut out
Great watch. As someone with a Malinois this dog just looks like a ton of fun. Not a training nightmare she would be a riot in the right home.
We just brought a Germanian Shepsky home and this series has REALLY helped me already! He’s 11 weeks old tomorrow and by using the lure I’ve already got him doing the “Down” command! Thank you for all your time and effort that goes into your channel!!!!
Zaaaak! I am love, love, loving this! I fostered a German Shepherd that was found abandoned at 4 weeks. She is part of the family now and at 11 months, looks just like Moira. As we go through this journey with you, Bree and Moira, we are picking up some great techniques to add to our training tool box! Thanks so much for helping Moira and us too!

Speaking of Cobra Kai, Zak reminds me a LOT of Daniel LaRusso. No only in how he looks but also in his philosophy. I wonder if there's a Johnny Lawrence dog trainer out there teaching the 'balanced' approach to dog training.
Oof, our 1 year old springer was like this on leash. We've spent a lot of time on teaching her more appropriate behavior. And we've been lucky that she's learned quickly. But, we live in our condo. She's still having some "over threshold" behavior when we're in our condo building. 9/10 times we leave our unit, we don't see anyone. So it's the 1 time it does happen, there's barking (less now, but still barks), and sometimes the excited lunging. We're trying to work through this, I know it scares her when there's a person all of a sudden, but I know it scares the neighbors too! Anyways, excited to see how Moira's barking and loose leash walking goes!! And I'm thrilled you're doing this with a rescue dog!

what happened to your hair style?
A dual-clip leash is a HUGE benefit with an over-threshold dog. 99% of the time, you walk normally, but those times that the dog goes over threshold, you take a firm hand on the end that's clipped onto the front of the harness/onto the collar, and turn the dog away from the thing that's sending them over threshold. The key to regaining control of a reactive dog is to regain their attention..and you can't do that from behind them. It's extremely important to be able to turn them away from the trigger. I have a 70LB lab that reacts to dogs like Moira does. Or he used to. With the help of dual-ended leads, I trained him to pay attention to me instead of dogs.
This gives me so much comfort. I have worked SO HARD with my husky shepherd mix and I feel still so far behind on certain behavior training. It's comforting to know even professional trainers admit it is a LOT of work.

Me too! Also, how to get them to not jump on people or kids when they're not that crazy about food. Mine isn't that interested and doesn't jump when I bring the food. 😐 That aside, great video and good, challenging dog! Loving it! Thank you, Zak! ❤

I know you touched base on the demand barking but would love even more in-depth. My puppy is a demand barker and it’s so hard not to get frustrated and we live in an apartment... hard to find full training videos on it.
My dog is also a demand barker, he has many problems and most are my fault
I'm so glad you started this series. I have a pitbull puppy whose about her age and has similar issues. She's pretty good on walks and is easily managed, but dog parks and getting her into doggie daycare without jumping up on people and pulling me are a challenge. And there are no professional dog trainers in our area. Seeing something this relatable gives me so much hope for my future with my Talulah Belle 💕

@@bankimoon5698 Why not? If you were a responsible handler your dog would be great around other dogs no matter which breed you train.
@@durkadur27 dogs parks in general are dangerous doesn't matter if your dog is super friendly and trained. People are irresponsible and bring in THEIR untrained dogs which ends in dog fights or worse; death. It's not worth it and most good trainers recommend daycares instead since they test dog's temperaments.

Never ever go to dog parks. AKA fight club for dogs! unless testing obediance outside it. Never take others owners training for granted. You'd be suprised the amount of owners that don't have solid recall or high energy/nervous dogs and can't read the behaviour and there let loose, perfect recipe for a fight. Look at the mess Zak is making of this dog.

I got my dachshund puppy during the Kona series. Cannot express how much it really was my new puppy survival guide. Signed up and downloaded the 30 day perfect puppy course. Everyone always tells me how impressed they are of how well behaved she is for being so young. Even though I don't have an older dog with behaviors to work through, will always watch and like every video to support the channel and what you guys are doing. :)

Yes! I loved seeing Moira over threshold just like my own reactive pups! She is so smart and easy to teach (also like mine). I’ll be so interested to see if you can conquer that reactivity in two weeks 🤣 it took us a year to conquer one of my dog’s people reactivity, and we are still working with the other on cars. It was good to hear you say “one step forward, two steps back”...it feels like we go through that all the time. But it’s so worth it. I am absolutely loving this series!

I can't help wondering if she'd make a good police dog (or working dog of some sort). She seems to respond so well to training and bonding with a human and has lots of drive.

Yes exactly. My rescue was a young adult dog with no training. Puppy training videos helped but were not as relevant to the situation. But the play biting....have you found a way to curb that? I have only managed to correct by about 60% still trying to figure out the last 40%
Mary Wigle I personally have not been able to do it very well. I think it definitely helps when I give her (a GSD) huge praise when she’s playing rough with her toys. I think it helps her understand that’s what she’s supposed to bite. That being said.... she still just about tips my foot off every time she has to poop
@@marywigle9668 i've adopted a rescue from another family (which couldn't handle him and just made it worse tbh). For play biting every time he'd start, I'd become instantly boring and catch his muzzle and close it for a second or 2. Then start playing again, as long as his teeth weren't on me i was fine with it. once he'd put his teeth on my hand again I'd do it all over again. I think he stopped after 1 week. Some dogs might take it as part of the play though so it is inportant to make it "outside" of the game cycle by dropping the game first.
I'm never afraid of being physical with my dog since body language is about the best thing they understand, but I also never cause pain.

Moira is such a beautiful and smart dog. I am glad she is getting a 2nd chance and training to make her a good dog companion for someone. Time and effort well spent.
Only just starting this episode but THANK YOU for making this series. I love your videos and have used them to train my rescue dog but THIS SERIES is the reality for lots of rescue dog owners. It gives real insight and perspective into how to to train problem behaviors in real life!

I like to take the "nothing is free" approach with my dog, too. So I make her lay down when I prepare her meal or make her sit while I put on her leash.
I have a 5 month old German Shepard and I am loving the new series. All your videos are super helpful, but the latest episodes are so relatable. I watched the Kona series and found myself wondering how she was so attentive and quick to listen (particularly when out and about!), so it’s great to see how you adapt to training with Moira in situations where she is not as responsive straight away. Thank you for showing that training is not always straightforward!

I really needed to see this video today; My rescue dog had an over threshold moment this morning that resulted in me in tears in my apartment because I felt like it was such a massive setback in the moment; She didn't know anything in October when I adopted her and now she's generally SUPER well trained, her only vice being other dogs at the apartment complex [The shelter said that she was dog friendly. She is not.]
She's come so far this at at well but it's really embarrassing to have my dog bark and lunge and growl and hackle. It had been a while since she had a moment like this but we were also caught off-guard [never leaving the house without counter-conditioning treats again, not even for 30 seconds apparently lol!!]

I went for a walk in my community today, and my neighbors knew I was dog training from your videos just by walking past me! We talked about how much we love this new series. I’ve got a 6.5 month old pomsky, and I’d swear he’s part wolf with how stubborn he is even after 4 hours of training a day including hand feeding his meals and keeping him on leash all the time. It’s nice to see a dog who’s also stubborn. We moved to a slip lead because our puppy was just not reacting to leash corrections in a harness. Our trainer friend recommended a prong collar, but we figured it would be a good intermediate step since prong collars seem painful and are banned in like 3 countries. I can’t wait to see how you train out leash pulling with a strong dog only using a harness. We’re feeling pretty overwhelmed with leash training after months of positive enforcement only training with the harness and moving to the slip lead. So happy to see the evolution of your channel! The strong shelter dog is definitely an untapped training source on UA-cam; you’ve struck some serious gold! The shelter dogs of New Orleans are lucky to have you!

We hand feed his kibble as training treats, so he has an extra 2 hours a day, one in the morning and one at night of training practice
@@emilyraney9515 And have you thought about that your dog might be so hyper because you entertain him too much throughout the day instead of too little? Puppies sleep around 20 hours per day, grown dogs around 18 hours - so maybe he's not getting enough rest? My 6 months old pup definitely is super hyper if I don't give him enough time to sleep throughout the day... just a thought :)
Also have a pomsky puppy. Very stubborn, especially with the going into the garbage cans. Whines a lot. They have so much energy, she tires me out. She can nap for a while but as soon as someone gets up she’s right behind us and stops napping.
Reassuring to hear that having a dog focused on one toy is a positive. I find my boy (3 yr old GSD) is very easy to train with treats but with his coveted red ball he is SO hyper and excited about it, his focus is 100% on the ball and not on me. I am trying to transition away from treats but I find he can't learn new tricks with the ball because he is soooo jacked up. This is going to be a challenge but glad to hear it is not insurmountable!

@@zakgeorge Yeah because there are millions of videos that teach you how to train a dog from puppyhood, where people can just edit and trim out the bad parts - probably already prime the puppy beforehand so they appear good on video, but this series really helps illustrate the hard parts.
Zak, thanks for publishing this series. It's easily the most instructive set of videos you've done. And it's beautiful for us because 1) Moira is so like our recently deceased Reina who passed away in her sleep at 10 years and eight months, also a German Shepherd, also adopted at approximately eight months, and 2) we just took on a Malinois pup, Saki, who's between 7 and 10 months old and displays a lot of Moira's behaviour "traits" - I don't want to say "problems" but you know what I mean! Sure Saki is going to be an absolutely fantastic dog, with training, patience, and love. This series is a year old now, is there any chance you can post an update with Moira's progress?

what a well timed video. this is exactly what we've been experiencing with our new rescue. when that prey drive kicks off for him he goes right over threshold and it's been so overwelming for me and my family. it's sent my anxiety a little out of control where im worried that if im not watching him every moment even when he's just sleeping in the crate that something terrible will happen... its really good to see someone honestly talk about what those moments are like and how they can affect you

I just took in my family’s two lab mixes and they went from having their own backyard and very quiet house to live in, to being in an apartment with plenty of dogs and people making noises and scents. Seeing you be so positive in the face of Moira barking and pulling has been invaluable to me learning how to train my doggos to perform at a higher level in the face of these distractions. And your relentless positivity and focus on what your dogs do right, even when your dogs get difficult has helped me lead my own dogs and have a much better time training them than a no/punitive approach.

I got my puppy a bit earlier ( only 4 or 5 weeks old ).now he is almost 3 months old.he still bitting like crazy. BUT..thanks to what I had learn from here he already know 5 tricks. Sit,down,high and low 5,roll and almost got the fecth.....

My wife and I bought a standard Goldendoodle puppy back in September, and while we've done a decent job training him so far, he still has some of those bad puppy habits.
He's a great dog... he loves everyone and every dog he sees, but at 9 months his manners aren't quite there yet. Barks, doesn't always come when called, lots of hard puppy play biting that leaves bruises, pulling when walking, etc.
We don't have any kids, so he's our baby and want him to have the best life possible, which means proper training, so I can't wait to see what else this series presents. Great content as always!

Love this series so far! I really like the emphasis on getting dogs exercised and starting with baby steps in training. The hardest part of training is training ourselves to be patient and these videos have helped so much in my own training ventures
I swear every time I'm watching your videos I'm like nah this wouldn't work with my pup she's a disaster... let me try it and BAM it works! She learned leave it in seconds with the method you used with Moira I have been at it for like a month. It felt like magic. Now I'm reinforcing her to it but it has already made a world of difference with her walks! No more wrestling to get unknown tissues out of her mouth. Thanks!!
This man should see my rescue dog. Very similar behaviors, plus food, crate and human aggression... he’s just smaller so it’s easier to manage certain things... training him with professionals got rid of human aggression but took lots of work... we didn’t give up yet tho!

So happy to see this series!! We're struggling with a reactive/frustrated greeter 7mo old GSD - such smart dogs but very highly strung so I'm really intrigued to see how Moira does with overcoming her reactivity. We're about to engage with a behaviourist but will also be taking hints from this series for sure 😊

When you first did the Inertia series I was so excited, our dogs were just a few weeks off in age but my dog is much more like this pup
This series has been a big help. I have a border collie, German Shepherd, blue heeler mix who has a lot of energy. He is 2 1/2 years old and trained in the basics but struggles with jumping on new people and come when called. I’m looking forward to see how you work through these. Also, Super chewer is an amazing box!!!
