    Respect for what Zak has taken on with this dog - just this morning, I had a taste of this myself: A very large dog came to our fence and wouldn't leave the fenceline of our property, as he was attracted by our own dogs. Staying there would have put the dog's life at risk however, as we have big building trucks go up and down the road here. No owner in sight. He seemed friendly and exuberant, so, I stepped outside the gate and slipped a slip leash over his head. NOW however, that large dog became a bit nervous and started jumping up and mouthing at me. I was able to lead him down the street, phoning up various neighbors as I went, and, eventually, I got the dog back into the care of his owner BUT it's no joke handling a completely uneducated large, powerful dog that doesn't know you, and you don't know it. It is a risk. I also wouldn't have dared letting that dog come near my own dogs without the fence in between, as one just never knows. Dogs that either lived wild on the street or half-wild as property guardians like my neighbor's dog, are VERY different from dogs that were raised in homes with humans. Great work, Zak, educating this large pup.

    Chop is doing so well 👏. You can see clearly how he’s bonded to Zak with the leaning on him and his tail is always wagging when he looks at you. It’s good you give him plenty of affection, I think that helps since he probably hasn’t had much of it in the past. Good job Chop 👍🥰

    I have a dog which I thought was a Black GSD when I rescued him at 5 weeks old from a lousy backyard breeder, but I'm having my doubts anyways at a whopping 70 lbs for a 6 month old pup yet you can still see muscle and rib you have no clue how seeing you handling bigger dogs is beyond helpful.

    At 6:51 when he was barking it really sounded (to me) like he was asking “why aren’t they coming to play with me???” In a young child’s whiny tone. So cute.

    The settle training is so good to see. It has made me realise I need to train that with my own dog. We have relied too much on using the crate when she needs to settle (and she does settle without any problem in there) but she isn't very good at relaxing outside of the crate so it has become this double-edged sword.

      I recently rescued a dog that placed the house. I started using the leash method I also started sprinkling dog food on her bed a say food girl. Just randomly when she was settled on it. She now keeps all her toys on that bed and she will relax there.

    I really loved the new editing style! I'm sure you've heard a million suggestions, but I think it would be great for you to bring a deaf dog on for a series. My parents have a deaf pitbull, and my first dog is my Deaf Boxer. I think a lot of people refrain from getting special needs dogs, and that you could really help get rid of their stigma!

    Thanks, Zak, for the brilliant video yet again. My GSD is almost 1.5years old and he does brilliantly off-lead with dogs - even stepping in to calm down situations in our socialising play group each week and reads other dogs perfectly, however with on-lead interactions he is reactive. He's my lifeline since I've quite bad PTSD and he gets me safely out of the house but we have to walk in quiet areas.
    Since your video of sitting in the park with Chop, we also done that for a few hours. Boy, was it tough for him to relax.. Hoping with more time he'll shape into a brilliant adult dog.
    Thank you for providing these resources online for free. Much love and pawsitivity from Ireland to all you guys.

    • @couchbug
      @couchbug 2 роки тому

      ooo that would be interesting but also unless he has experience training service dogs specifically and knowledge on service dog specific training methods it may be irresponsible to put something like that out there (given that service dog training is definitely different than regular dog training, since you're training medical equipment, and takes both a special dog and special trainer). as a service dog handler myself i'm certainly interested, but would prefer he not do it if he isn't confident he can do it right, both in actual methods and in sharing 100% accurate information on what service dogs are and what training and having one is like.

    You and Bree are so patient. My dogs do not bark in the house mainly because it scares the heck out of me. I'm finding Chop harder to relate to than some of the other dogs you have trained, although I probably prefer him to Moira but he doesn't hold a candle to Inertia for me. It never ceases to interest me what people find appealing about different dog breeds. Maybe he will grow on me eventually.

    It is natural for dog lovers to want to know how dogs feel. In fact, dogs communicate a lot with their whole body. Not only their tails and whines, but also their gestures and behaviors can tell you a lot about how they are feeling. For example, even gestures such as yawning can contain messages. Knowing the meaning behind each of these gestures may help you get closer to your dog!🐶🐶🐶🐕🐕🐕🐕

    Can you please make a video and/or series at some point, about working with desensitizing your dog to FIREWORKS in the weeks leading up to New Year's Eve?
    PS. Thank you for everything you have taught me so far!

    • @BoundlessEyes
      @BoundlessEyes 2 роки тому +3

      Victoria Stillwell (It's Me or the Dog) basically just arranged an irresistable treat e.g. cheese, bacon pieces etc., and when a firework went off she said 'yes' at that moment and fed the tidbit. She kept doing this throughout the round of fireworks. Essentially you cause the dog to associate the sound of fireworks with something really good happening. It's also helpful to do this at a fair distance from the actual fireworks, possibly indoors in a safe space. (And if your dog is too anxious to take treats, I can't help you! Make them a sofa den to hide inside of and crawl in there with them for a hug. :) )

    • @susanlippy1009
      @susanlippy1009 2 роки тому +5

      Use UA-cam to play fireworks on very low volume during supper times. Gradually increase the volume over time. Feed pup in a space you can allow pup on days when fireworks will be set off. Stop getting excited yourself when fireworks go off. You do you just don't notice it. Your expecting pup to respond creates a greater likely hood pup will respond, vicious cycle. So don't react anymore, they simply are a part of the environment. Most dogs hate fireworks, they are loud and bright. Dogs don't see the range of colors we do so all the downside and none of the good. I often put my dogs back in the bedroom where they are used to chilling. Most mine never cared but my latest is more sound sensitive. I need to desensitize her.

    I have so many questions for you! First, the couches and console table at the house in Alaska, I love them, do you have a link where I could find them? I need a dog-hair friendly sofa! Second, this is my episode, the one I needed! My puppy is 8m, and potty trained fully, but not trained in house manners. But what I need is this episode with four children and a cat running around the house too. Training seems to take four times as long with kids because just when I think I have something trained, they reinforce the negative behavior again and we start over. Or I'm trying to focus on something, and then a brawl breaks out between a couple boys and my back is turned for a minute and she's on the table or stealing a shoe. I give her undivided attention during training sessions while they are at school, but she ends up penned up and barking when they are home. We need a breakthrough!

    Very curious to see what kind of mix Chop is! I'm thinking there could be some Anatolian Shepherd!
    I've got a heeler/GSD/chow mix that is hands down a herder! If people in the house are up moving around, she is circulating the exterior of the room, she lies down when people sit down. She is like my shadow or always placing herself in eye shot of me! I know this is in her nature so I allow it as long as she isn't in the way.
    I do however need to work on getting her to stay out of the kitchen when I'm preparing food! 🤦😜

    I absolutely love this series! I love how you're showing every detail that goes into training a dog, which not many trainers show!
    As an owner of a lab myself, I have a question. I have been training my dog the 'leave it' command. I just started it today and it went pretty well. I put treats on his paw and he wouldn't even look at them until I command him again. But the problem itself lies there. He will listen to me as long as he knows I have treats with me. The moment he sees I no longer have them, he's back to his energetic form! And the strange thing is that whenever he's super excited, he would grab any random slipper in the house and run wildly with that in its mouth. And I dare you to leave your slipper with him for 5 minutes, and it'll be torn off to bits in seconds. I almost had a breakdown today begging him to leave the footwears in the house alone, but he would merely ignore me. Everyone is upset with his behavior and I can't let this continue :( So, if you got any tips regarding this, I'll be really glad you helped me out. 🙏

      Labs are retrievers - play into the strengths and you will win.

    • @zuzuspetals9281
      @zuzuspetals9281 2 роки тому +9

      All training takes TIME and REPETITION. Every day, every time, the same thing. Please don’t be discouraged after one day, week, month. Use the treats for a few days then taper off because they need to learn they’re not doing a trick, they are following a command and learning a behavior. Labs and Retrievers are smart and catch on quick, but they also catch on quick to the idea of “I’ll only do it for a treat.” Transferring the behavior to “I’m doing this because you said so,” is important. Your dog will get it soon. Our dog is 12 and we still have moments of “Bea, SIT, STAY!”, when almost always a hand signal and look are enough. Be patient and IGNORE what other people are saying, expecting, pressuring. This is about you and your dog and your relationship. Take time, repeat, repeat, repeat, it will work. Promise. (Also go to a thrift store and buy a bunch of slippers. When he decides to pick one of yours up, use the “Leave it” command and show him a thrift store slipper to exchange for it instead of a treat. Start using slippers to exchange for your slippers, then wean him off those. I believe he’ll grow out of the stage of doing this. Make sure he has several plush toys to enjoy as he seems to like squishy things, when he grabs your slippers don’t chase him or yell, just a firm Leave It command and show him another slipper or toy to exchange, Good Boy. I think he’ll catch on quickly.)

On the rare occasion that she can poke her face into the basement door and snitch one, she's got pretty good "drop it" and "leave it" commands. Sure, she still runs off delightedly with them every now and again. So when she does that, we ignore it. She wants us to play. Chasing her makes it fun. So we don't! In just 3 weeks, we've seen a huge improvement. Keep at it, stay consistent, and it'll work!

      Hi, leave it is a great command but it does take time. One thing about training with treats is that once you are sure they know the command, you'll want to mix up when they get treats instead of giving treats every time. (Keeps them guessing, and keeps the treat valuable.) When it comes to something like footwear or garbage, the most important thing is to set the dog up for success by making the things they want to get into unavailable. Find a place to put shoes where your dog can't get them, get everybody on the same page. That is the best way to get a dog not to do something: Make it hard/impossible for them to do it. If he has a shoe in his mouth, offer him an appropriate toy instead and make it as interesting as possible. Make sure the shoe is the boring option. I hope this helps.

      @@emilyestelle7471 I trained my girl to bring me the socks when she picked them up. I would use the excited voice: have you got my sock?! She starts heading toward me: ohh thank you for that sock! She drops it in my hand: I hold it to my chest, excited voice: ohh Ilove that sock! She then follows me to the fridge to get a gold reward: Chee$$$e lol
      Her sock hunting is a great trick at other ppls homes as well.

    Do you have any tips for dogs that react out of fear towards other dogs? My dog likes to play with small dogs, but he's terrified of big dogs.

      Just guessing the advice here, but when Zak was socialising Inertia as a pup and tried to introduce her to a friendly but huge wolfhound and she hid, he arranged some more playdates with suitable medium large dogs to work her up to the wolfhound giant. :) Suitable playdates is important - think 1:1 play in a safe space rather than dog parks and off leash dogs bounding out of nowhere on walks.

    When you do training in Alaska could you spend some time focusing on how to get dogs to stop chasing wild animals? I live in Alaska and moose come in the fenced backyard sometimes in winter and my 15 lbs dog tries to charge them even after getting kicked once while I was in the yard with him. I'm not sure what to do, and there's not much info online about this issue. Love your videos, they're so helpful with my rescue pup.

    This is so nice to see! I'm fostering a dog for my friend who is so hard to get the attention of when he focuses on something else and it's so hard. He'll bark a lot like Chop and will ignore us, even for high-prize treats. Thank you for this video.

    This series hits me so hard because I rescued a husky mix while you were doing the george series. The similarities are blowing my mind. Mine was a stray before I got him and knew nothing of living with humans. Less than a year later I have him mushing like a champ. This was mostly due to you and your amazing videos. Thank you so much Zak and Bree!

    Saw ya carrying a gallon of water, so I want to share. Depending on your dog's size, get two plastic containers. Fill one with water & cut the other one, saving the lower 1/3. Use that 1/3 as a dish. Slip it under the water bottle & carry together.

    The reaction to other dogs is what I'm really interested in learning. I have a mini chiweenie that has a Napoleon complex.

    This is so great to see Chop making progress. Slow and steady-as you said, distance and time really helps. It's always nice to see Chop and Inertia playing together. Have you found out what mix of breeds he is yet? Thank you so much for making these videos-they are SO helpful! This series in particular has been super! Keep up the great work, Zak!

    chop is a kangal mix, i should know, i have one. they are not "lie down and relax" dogs, their job is to patrol and make sure everything is ok. also, he will probably not listen to come if other dogs are around, kangals are notoriously difficult to recall when there are distractions.

    This was a great video!! My dog is similar to Chop in that she can be reactive towards other dogs too - but I notice for my dog it's only when she's restrained (on-leash). She reacts this way also when people directly approach her when she's on-leash. Would love to see if you have training for calming reactivity specifically in regards to being restrained. Will also continue watching this series to see if this training helps with my former street dog as well :)

    Chop is doing great. Do you think he would do better as a sled dog, maybe for someone who does the sled dog races in Alaska. I think he’d be a good sled dog if he can get along with the other dogs. The ones I’ve watched on UA-cam are chained apart, so they can’t fight, but close enough to still say hi. But he would have to behave when on the sled dog line and all the dogs are together. Once in awhile, the dogs may have a disagreement but the owner is right on top of it to stop it. It doesn’t happen too often and I’m sure the good sled dog owners know how to train them. Just a thought because he’s so active and loves to run.

    around the minute 8 of the video what I would have done is #1 give more distance to chop, 2# make sure to have high value treats to mark and reward right when he sees the dogs but doesn't react and #3 go away by trowing a toy the opposite way. And like you said the goal is that chop doesn't react anymore when he sees dogs. but shortening the distance between chop the dogs must be done gradually and at his pace.

    How many times a day do you train in a day and for how long is each training session?
