  • Welcome to another Car Caves drive episode, where The Late Brake Show explores people's interesting car dens. Jonny chooses one car to take for a spin - this time a modified 1980s Fiat Panda 4x4. In episode 2 we visited Alton in Hampshire, where Vernon Hibberd possesses a Fiat Panda fetish for Fiat Pandas, especially the 4x4 model - the go-anywhere '80s Giugiaro mountain goat.
Vernon has 10 4x4s and a total of 30 Pandas - many of which live in his 'Panda pen' basement storage area beneath a barn. Sadly, we didn't have a huge amount of time to drive the car in between filming the basement and workshop full of Fiats, not enough for some decent off-roading action, however, Jonny managed to enjoy some town, country and back track driving in this modified 1986 mk2 4x4.

As a Defender 90 owner I absolutely love the 4x4 panda. Even the new one has a certain appeal. (And the Jimny.)
With so many Battery Barges around is easy to forget that big isn’t alway clever! Small is beautiful , a Defender 90 is shorter than a BMW i3!
TLBS is so refreshing. Showing us exactly what we didn’t realise we needed. Jonny’s enthusiasm, irrespective of what he shares with us is unlimited and shows us how much passion is out there for everyday vehicles. Thank you Jonny, and your team. Going independent is something we shall be eternally grateful for. Crack on!

I agree with you about the new Panda and Jimmy. Went out I'm a Panda and there was a Disco 2 in convoy with us. Both cars went all the same places without needing a tow.
Of course the Disco is far more spacious and if needs be could have toward the Panda. The Panda wouldn't have towed a Land Rover but then for most people that won't be an issue.

In the late 80’s my secondary school headmaster had a 4x4 Fiat Panda. We all knew as kids, if it snowed he would still make it in to school, which meant the school stayed open. Damn you Fiat with your ever so good 4x4 Panda, you stopped a lot of snow days….

You're 100% on-point about the ski resort part.
I had the scariest drive of my life in one of these awesome little machines.
Was in ski boots and hitching a lift in the French alps. A tiny French girl who looked about 16 pulled up in an old & rusty Panda 4x4. I threw my skis on the roof rack jumped in and off we went.
Jesus, I've never been so petrified in all my life. We probably weren't going all that fast, but there was no slowing down for the bends. And these were hairpin bends with 500ft drops off the sides on icy mid-Feb alpine routes. Thankfully the skinny tyres stuck to the road like glue.
This girl must have chain smoked about three cigs on our way up the mountain. After I got out I needed one as well. I was in such a befuddled state I even forgot to ask for her number.

One of the funniest things I have ever seen was a Panda 4X4 pulling a brand new (at the time) Range Rover Vogue out of a muddy puddle. The RR owner had zero idea about off road driving and still had road tyres on it. The RR Zdriver sat behind the wheel looking very meekish. The Panda driver was desperately trying not to laugh. I wish we had camera phones st the time.

I love Pandas... When I just finished school, those were used to deliver Meals on wheels and as run around for public services. After school a lot of school friends denied the service in the army and had to do a 1.5 year stint at public services. So of course there were races, Pandas 1000 and 850 class, rumours said that the Seat version was slightly faster. I now live in Switzerland and in those remote Mountain villages 4x4 Pandas are still used and a common sight. Because of the abilities, not for the lack if funds.

    Great episode!
My retired friend in the french Alps has one that I went for a ride in. They live on the side of a mountain and he casually took us up and down what looked like a graded scrambling route full of loose rocks. No problem for the little panda.
He and a bunch of his mates are also part of a Steyr Puch/ pinzgauer group. The latter are very impressive military spec off roaders. He took me for a ride in that too: we were going to join others at a mountain refuge high up the mountain for evening drinks then head home so we didn't bring anything with. We were crawling up these loose, steep tracks and suddenly a thunderstorm came upon us- biblical lightning and lashing rain. Not to mention it was now getting dark, the pinzgauer hesitated and stalled. It wouldn't turn on again.. we were at least an hour up and still had about 40 mins to go and nothing around but trees and lightning. Somehow he managed to get the engine to splutter into life and we nursed the temperamental pinz up to the refuge, by which time it was pitch dark and the others were getting ready for bed! We decided we would have to stay the night with them and I had to stuff newspaper down my socks and up my t shirt for warmth as I hugged myself lying on the table next to the fire. Good times!

1984 my wife and I moved from Minnesota to Sweden. Knowing what cars cost in Sweden (and Europe) we bought a 1984 Toyota Tercel SR5 - the one with a six speed transmission and selectable 4 wheel drive and put it in the 40' container together with all our stuff. We put 100K miles on it in six years driving around Europe and sold it in December '90 as we were moving back to the US. We actually got our money back and more.:) Six years on the west coast of Sweden and NO rust! Great car.

That was my first car, right there!
A 1992 Fiat Panda 4x4, with slightly increased ground clearance and mud tires! My dad bought it as an extra car for the countryside, but I got to drive it in the city too.
In the Italian countryside you still see so many of these, but at the time (this was towards the end of the life of the old Panda, mid-2000s) they were everywhere, by far the most capable off roader you could buy for that kind of money, and arguably the best in the narrow, bendy and steep tracks of the Roman countryside. I was always impressed by its performance, the fact it was so light made it so easy to go anywhere, and everytime something broke, it was very easy and cheap to repair.
After that died, we got a Jimny in replacement, which ended up being my main car for a decade, and boy oh boy I miss that one too.

My first car when I passed my test in 92 was white Fiat Panda 45. F41 TRD and if I'm honest the 1l fire engine was a cracking little thing, infact the whole car was brilliant for a 17 year old lad.

I’ve had a good few defenders and series Landrovers over the years. Also I’m off road driving instructor for a well know 4x4 make, so I’ve driven a lot of the fancy new cars. I think people who’ve not really had the opportunity to drive off road underestimate how important low weight is, much more so than any fancy terrain response or air suspension etc etc.
Panda’s are very impressive when the going gets rough. Had a drive of one in the Alps during a MTB holiday after getting talking to a guide, seriously capable on very rough terrain. He said in the winter they where the only thing that was any good on a lot of the higher mountain tracks. Absolutely believed him.
You should do more of this type of car if you can. Obviously the Jimny, but I would really love to see you drive a 2CV Sahara, if you can find somebody to let you drive one, I recon right up your street.

Generally I'm not all that interested in 4x4s as for most people they are unnecessary. These small utilitarian cars though are fascinating. A friend of mine had a modern Panda 4x4 cross and I was really impressed by it. So usable as a daily car on the road, comfortable driving quickly on poorly maintained roads and surprisingly capable off road too.
