When I initially heard this piece I thought it was absolutely beautiful, nothing more. Later I was given the opportunity to sing this piece with Mr. Stopford during a Concert Series at the University I attended then at the annual Christmas Concert. It was there, at the Christmas Concert, that the full meaning hit me like a ton of bricks. Once the final chord was cut off the audience was completely silent, no one said a word or applauded for a good 5-10 seconds. An absolutely stunning moment.

Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you.
I have called you by your name; you are mine.
    When you walk through the waters, I'll be with you;
You will never sink beneath the waves.
When the fire is burning all around you,
you will never be consumed by the flames
When the fear of loneliness is looming,
then remember I am at your side.
When you dwell in the exile of a stranger,
remember you are precious in my eyes.
You are mine, o my child, I am your father,
and I love you with perfect love.

That descant was one of my first solos back when I was just starting to open up and not be so shy... It certainly helps when you love the music you're singing, and I remember the adrenaline and sense of pride when we sang that. It will always be a bit nostalgic for me.

I'm so happy for you....incredible piece! That descant is beautiful. These moments are too rare a wonderful glimpse of what awaits us on the other side, we are lucky to be gifted them while here on earth. Keep singing.

So I have played this song several times now, and I can't help think of this, even though it was composed for a baptism, as a welcome home song when God calls us home to heaven to be Him. At the moment we leave our earthly bodies and our spirit sores to be with our creator. An all encompassing experience, all-surrounding moment(s) with light and love; the spirit travels in light speed till it reaches its final destination. I pray that when my times comes, this is the song that is playing in my consciousness. Amen.

Thank goodness it's not just me. I 'm a permanent deacon, and I was sitting on the altar during an ordination yesterday of permanent deacons, and I heard this song for the first time. And the overwhelming thought occurred to me that this is the song I need to have played at my funeral. May God bless you, Philip - you have obviously inspired many people.

I first heard this a fortnight ago at our evensong for All Souls' and Remembrance Day, the night before a funeral for a beloved friend/surrogate mum, and I completely fell apart, thinking exactly that - she would have loved this played at her funeral, and I need it played at mine. And I'm crying again, having found out that parents commissioned it for their wee one's baptism: it is also the perfect song to bring someone into the Christian life.

Our choir has been blessed to have this in our library. During rehearsals I had been unable to get through the piece without crying until I read that it was written for a baptism. (I know that makes no sense) I have regretted that this was not playing while my mom was taking her last breaths in this world. Thank you Mr. Stopford for sharing your gift with the world.

I remember singing this with my collage choir freshman year, this song got me through a terrible time and i remember weeping in rehearsals whenever we sang this song because the music spoke to my soul. This is true worship, and when I managed to compose myself to sing again my director gave me the descant, my first solo in college. Beautiful work, makes me tear up to this day.

Happy "10th anniversary of first performance" Philip! I love singing your music (I'm a humble and unaccomplished bass), and encourage our choir director to choose your music as much as I dare. Thank you for uploading performances for everyone to enjoy. I am currently in love with your Missa Deus Nobiscum, and would have ascended to heaven if I had been in the audience, I have no doubt! You are God's gift to choristers everywhere.

I just now purchased 2 copies of your "In My Father's House" CD (signed, YAY!). One for my choir director as a Christmas present (his name is Devon) and one for myself. What a great surprise that will be for him, and will no doubt inspire him to choose more of your music for us to sing. Thank you Philip!

Not at all. Regardless of their sweetness, sometimes the promises of God break upon us, and, in our unwitting callousness to them, shake us frightfully out of it.

When you are down and out, and it feels like the water and fire will destroy you, what a message of hope this delivers.
The music Philip made and the words he arranged from Isiah 43, incredible.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!" For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper And from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark. You will not be afraid of the terror by night, Or of the arrow that flies by day; Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, Or of the destruction that lays waste at noon. A thousand may fall at your side And ten thousand at your right hand, But it shall not approach you. You will only look on with your eyes And see the recompense of the wicked. For you have made the LORD, my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place. No evil will befall you, Nor will any plague come near your tent. For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, That you do not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lion and cobra, The young lion and the serpent you will trample down. "Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name. "He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. "With a long life I will satisfy him And let him see My salvation."”
