    I think it felt nastier than usual ones because they normally make a sweeping generalisation such as ‘here is something to make women look prettier’, whereas this was very directed and personal - ‘ this woman wouldn’t be as ugly if she would just do this’. But yeah I agree it made me feel uncomfortable too! Overall I think the makeup was very nice (particularly that blush!) but I dislike overdrawn lips in any situation so I much preferred your silliness lips to the ones he recommended.

      I totally agree. That was a savage burn in the video. Wow! I think your makeup turned out great, minus the lips LOL! I think you had them right the first time. I'm in my 50s and to be honest, I probably wouldn't have noticed these comments if you hadn't pointed it out, which just goes to show what we got used to until recently! I absolutely agree with some commenters about the older generations being very critical, they were masters of "the look" and my mom (nearly 80) still does it to me as her mom did to her until 2 yrs ago (Granny was 101...), my MIL, too... :o I have started telling my mom I will wear what I like... she says things like "you know 'we' can't wear that sort of thing..." (we are both short and plus-sized) and then is really surprised when I wear something that doesn't follow her rules and then she compliments me LOL In fact, I was very amused to visit her last week and see her wearing exactly my "uniform" of skirted or A-line tunics and leggings, hilarious in fact!!
    I am very glad my 3 daughters of all shapes and sizes have grown up with a lot more body/looks confidence than I ever had, I'm so proud of them (aged 36, 29 and 24) as smart, strong and beautiful women :)

But they don't gain anything by bringing each other down. Men do. Because that way women fight each other instead of fighting misogyny.

He denies her right to self-determination. And he’s also insulting God, who made her “drab” face!

      Tbh, I see a lot of this attitude still hanging around in makeup trends today (you have to have an angular, "contoured" face, you have to have lots of eye makeup, you have to apply makeup in a very specific way, etc.) it's just pitched in a much softer, more subtle way. We have made progress on this front, but beauty companies still profit off of our insecurities and the rise of social media has only made the situation worse as one specific way of being "good at makeup" has risen to the top thanks to beauty gurus.

I think this sounds really interesting and I wondered if you would like to try it out. She said it worked really good, gave nice curls and the hair did not smell like beer. Together with the toothpicks it would have some major bar vibes!

    The woman looked good with either make-up look, as well as without make-up. And the guy was incredibly rude. But, that was the time, a woman had a responsibility to look good and there was just one way to do it, one face shape, one body shape, one desirable aesthetic. It kinda reminds me of my issues with people who are like "Oh, I wish I lived in (insert decade here), the clothes and hairstyles were so much prettier back then." You can still wear that stuff today. Today, you can look any way you want, whereas back then you had to look a certain way to be deemed acceptable, and that acceptable standard had very real sexist and racist undertones and implications.

    • @TheVampireTwinz
      @TheVampireTwinz 4 роки тому +26

      Mmmmm I disagree. People can’t just go about dressing how they want. People are equally as rude and judge mental and condemnatory now as they were then, the standard may have shifted to more attainable wearable standards, but if you dress outside of it, you’ll notice that there is still a very specific standard. Unfortunately Racism and sexism are very much alive. It just doesn’t effect some people personally, because people don’t talk about it, so they don’t hear of it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not still very much a reality for some people. If you were to dress truly individually, you’d see the effects of those standards. Your social circle, your social standing, the way you feel about yourself, you may notice you feel that you’re not allowed to feel good about yourself. There are more, and it’s honestly fascinating to see that some people think individuality is acceptable. At least this is what I’ve noticed in my experience.

      The original comment was incredibly ignorant and deceptively optimistic. It would amazing to live in a world so happy and equal. But it’s unfair to minimize the daily struggles of many people who do not have the advantage of living in the world the original commenter seems to live in. Their comment was ignorant and begs to be corrected :/ as harsh as that is. It’s not okay to just say “it’s all good now, cause it was worse then” it’s not all good now. And that needs to be said.

    • @Cranberrycheesecake1
      @Cranberrycheesecake1 4 роки тому +19

      @@TheVampireTwinz I think both your and her perspective make sense. No not everything is well and good in todays society. It depends on where you live as well. But we can agree that there are more opportunities for more people nowadays. Simply because we progressed in time and in styles. It's easier to have more options of wearing clothes nowadays because there are simply more decades and options to choose from. I do believe there are more possibilities in most societies nowadays (and possibly more so in the future), but it depends on so many factors like country, culture, type of government. Of course there are less options for people in a country like North-Korea but for most of the western countries the options are better now. While back in the day restrictions were also there in most western countries. So there is some progress, just not a completely linear line of progress.

    Also, I’ve heard my own mother and grandmother spout some of this depreciating nonsense. I like vintage things, but I do find it wild how thinly veiled these grooming statements are. “there isn’t a woman in the world who can’t become more beautiful” and other such comments really do worm their way into ones psyche and stay there.
    I don’t believe that our generation is too sensitive, I think we have the knowledge of mental health and the necessary tools to deem certain choices of words as damaging.
    While this was a different time in history, I find it still pertinent to compare the time periods for growth. Both are equally lovely in their own way, and show beauty throughout the centuries, but we don’t have to continue the time honored tradition of putting others down to lift ourselves up.
    All in all, cool video!

      Evelyn Pinkley - Thank you. I really appreciated your comment. In particular, mentioning we are more aware of mental health - not thin-skinned without reason.

      Yes exactly! Very well put. It's funny, whenever someone tries to stand up for himself nowadays the reaction is often: you are too sensitive or soft.... Meaning: it's your fault if I say something that hurts you, I don't want to change my wording. I think that although times and cultures may differ, human nature doesn't change all that much.

    Back in 2003 when I was looking for SFX makeup schools, Westmore was a huge name. I never got into doing movie makeup, unfortunately, but this video is more informative than anything you could’ve researched back then.

    I agree the model looked much more square than round faced, and agree that your natural lip shape looks adorable on your face! I think the widened lip looked especially attange on you bc your face is actually round (or maybe heart shaped) - in any case your jaw tapers, so the wider lips looked out of proportion, whereas her jaw was rather square, so it could more easily contain wider looking lips. (And the round overdrawn ones did indeed look bad.) Probably the fact you had to overdraw to get wider is why it seems weird - using a light base and underdrawing the lips' fullness might've given a better "wide" effect. And I bet that blush placement worked bc it was the precursor to modern contouring methods! (It's where many might place bronzer these days.)

    Wow! Westmore is savage. He's not sugar coating or beating around the bush. I could see the blush actually being something that might help the face look less round. It was mainly the change in hair style that actually seemed to have more affect tho. It's interesting that they leave out talking about the hair.

    Ahhh. The good old days? This is the kind of thing that some folks want to go back to?
    Women still (sadly) are too often defined by their looks, and I think social media perpetuates that in many ways.
    But we are making progress when most people see the problem with these kind of statements.
    Love your videos!
    Finally, regarding appearance, perhaps Mr Westmore should have followed his own advice...

    I think this videos of the old days are all more ore less offensive. Today there is a culture of awareness, that is allowed, to name it. Back then the woman had to sit and listen and not give a word back.

      Very true. Back in the day, a "lady" was meek and mild and never complained. Think of all the old Disney princesses.
      Which is why so many women then turned to valium ("mother's little helper.")
      My mom reminded me regularly that I would never catch a husband bc I was too outspoken. Everyone else considered me too passive. 😱
      Therapy now!!!

      @Chrissy 123 As a boomer and proud mom of 3 millennials (or maybe gen z's...I can't be bothered to keep that all straight) I ask my family and friends the same things all the time.
      Of course the next generation is different; that's the way it's supposed to be! We were all so proud of ourselves for listening to music our parents hated. And now, if I have to listen to one more angry old jerk say "back when music was good and times were simpler" I will scream.
      The 50s and 60s weren't all drive-ins and record stores. Like you said, if you weren't a middle class white male, well, it sucked to be you.
      I lived it (the 60s anyway). Don't want to go back. Music was good though.
      Thanks for the chance to rant! Cheers!!
