He's a gem!! Not only is he a great trumpeter, but he could imitate Louis Armstrong like no one else I ever seen/ heard. In the late 1980s PBS in New York had a special on Louis Armstrong and Byron Stripling was the interpreter of that music. It was like watching and listening to Louis Armstrong. His sound was amazing. I would put him ahead of many trumpeters that make the top 50 list.
+Carter Landon This was arranged by Eric Dixon, tenor sax player of the Basie band. Dennis Mackrel composed and arranged "And That's That," which is on the same DVD.
CARTER LANDON: ARE YOU SAYING THAT THE VERY DRUMMER ON THIS ALBUM ARRANGED THIS WHOLE PIECE? IS HE DENNIS MACKREL? THIS DRUMMER IS FABULOUS! SYLVIA - FL - 9/13/2019
One of the most under rated trumpet players around! Huge sound, can solo with amazing feeling and accuracy and can powerful play lead without sounding "thin" like many players today. It's ALL about the quality of the sound!
Man, this guy is one of the greats!!! I have most of Basie’s albums. That same year I saw Harry James and his orchestra I thought I had died and went to heaven, later the Woody Herman band. Wish this was still alive as it once used to be.
I can't believe I'm only now hearing this in 2021. At 36 years old, and Night in Tunisia being my favorite song. This is maybe the best trumpet solo I've ever heard.
THIS IS Soooo JAZZY! JUST THE WAY I LOVE JAZZ TO BE PLAYED. AND, CAN'T BRYON BLOW THAT TRUMPET WHILE HE IS SWINGING? I'M SWINGING WITH HIM. THE BAND IS SO GREAT. THE DRUMMER IS JUST KEEPING IT ALL TOGETHER AND HE DOESN'T MISS A BEAT. I LOVE DRUMS! SYLVIA -FL 9/19
Duke Ellington is a philosopher of big band, where the sounds are the colors of a painting; Count Basie is the Albert Einstein of the big band, where the music are maths and physics.
OMG! Saw this edition of the band at Rocky River HS near Cleveland right around this time. Was a jazz major at Akron U and all the 'cats' were there...met Freddie Green & had a nice conversation with Thad afterwards, bucket list item CHECK! Huge debt to all these great gentlemen.....

I saw this same orchestra in 1986. Powerhouse doesn't even come close to describing the sound from this group of "Top-Shelf" musicians. Byron was spot on that night like usual. He's a Ferguson and Severinsen rolled into one!
this version of Tunisia cross to the bones and goes directly to the soul... Best version, Thad's conducting and Byron best soloist ever!! So young he was....just 24!! was there record for that? LP, CD, DVD?

World class trumpet player. Beyond brilliance.
That’s some of the most brilliant and powerful trumpet tone I’ve ever heard
Freddie Hubbard had it, too.
@@thomassicard3733 wot I thought ....
can't argue with that. clean as a whistle.
can't argue with that. incredible.
My trumpet has greatly improved by watching and listening to this cat! ❤ Thank you, Mr Stripling and Thank you for posting this video
I was lucky enough to hear Byron live several times. He's one of the underappreciated masters of the horn.

Yes, I couldn't agree more. And how beautiful the tribute to Louis toward the end.
You’re not kidding. Never heard him play, but his sound is so clear and precise.

Byron, playing an old NY Bach, and a Bach 1 mouthpiece. Not a 1C, a 1. A cannon. He just doesn't miss.
Massive lips big mouthpiece
As a lead/Principle player, the Bach 3 was it for me. The Bach 1 was just too big for my amount of wind & endurance. My horn of choice was Benge.

That is actually crazy. He's playing on a bucket and is screaming like it's nothing
a Long time ago in the 40's.....Dizzy And Bird...gave us this sound....they call it night in tunisia...and...the melody still lingers on...❤️
Great solo by Byron Stripling. Hat's off to him. Really.
This was arranged by the drummer, Dennis Mackrel, who directed the Utah All-State Jazz Band, when we played this. Pretty cool guy.

I think this is the best version I've heard of Night in Tunisia. Great playing all around.
Sonio: fo my the BasysyBand is and was the greatest band of all the time 💗💗🤩
Yes, the most elegant version ever!

Byron was only 24 at the time this was recorded. im almost 30 now and wish i had half the skill level he did back then.

Same I've been playing trumpet most of my life and I thought I'd heard just about every version imaginable but I m just now hearing this
You might take a listen to Dizzy Gillespie with his big band on this. Also amazing!
What a double threat - a Lead trumpet player that can also play AMAZING jazz!

Only the Basie band can swing like this ,great soloist musician at the top of there game ,and Thad the man RIP
World class trumpet. One of the best.
Doesn't get much better than this. What it means to be a "lead" player. Chops with sound.
So true !
oh teah big time the lead trumpet was unreal
Trumpet solo was 🔥🔥🔥.
Byron Stripling

Best performance I ever heard in Night in Tunisa bravo maestro 👏👏👏
love this arrangement
Sammy Nestico arrangement !!!
Loved how he quoted St. Louis blues
I've never heard much of Byron although I know he's very well known. All I know is I've seen him in the GRP All Star Jazz Band.
I LOVE IT!!!
Oh yes that's Thad Jones... He also make the Danish Radio Big Band swing like hell... A born natural.....

Always loved the Basie sound!
just had to listen to this again. he simply has the best sound ever on a trumpet.
Tad Jones!!!and CB Orchestra Great!!!

Never seen a man shred on a trumpet before, damnn
LA ORQUESTA DE COUNT BASIE SIEMPRE TAN DIVINA. ALWAYS COUNT BASIE' ORQUESTRA SO DIVINE.
stunning.
Did these guys always go this hard? Nice.
E un piacere ascoltare dei proffesionisti bravi e fanno della buona musica
Actually the MPC is a custom model that Scott Laskey made for him, Byron told me so in person-Laskey's blanks look very Bach-ish (I played one)
Rest in peace Thad Jones.
wow that's awesome!!!!
This is the most amazing fucking Trumpet solos Ever!!!!
Mad respect.
1:55 circular breathing!
No dude, wonderful solo, but he does breathe at 1:57. It's just a short one, but watch his neck and you will see. But Byron is the man!
Also at 4:11
Increible
any one notice @ 1:18 how the two trumpet players int he back pick up a white towel and drop it off in sync?
hulk julien good eye. This performance was so good that all parts of the band were grooving in sync, and you could see it in the tiniest details!
Come on man...you are top-notch!
Jose....Anjos....BRILHANTE....
Fabuloso!
Check out Thad Jones' reactions to what Byron was doing!
Wow! This is like a nuclear blast musically. What a fine collection of musicians, and the trumpet soloist was killing it.
I've seen A night in Tunisia, and he's the most technical
this version of Tunisia cross to the bones and goes directly to the soul... Best version, Thad's conducting and Byron best soloist ever!! So young he was....just 24!! was there record for that? LP, CD, DVD?
Byron is crazy sick. That SOUND!!!
Hooooo!!!!! Che meraviglia
Byron Stripling is the trumpet soloist.
He later played with Woody Herman and does a lot of solo work at this time ( 2013).
Great player .
very very nice sound !
They don’t need no conductor these guys are professional and could play in their own defices

Although Count Basie' s band was based on swing and Blues, he was open to other forms of jazz as can be seen here.

Count Basie in a modern vein.
Hate or love the guy that was a damn great solo! 🎶🎺👍👏🎧
Listen to Sonora Poncena version sounds awesome with the Latin beats
Actually Byron played with Woody Herman before he joined the Basie Band.
You can tell by a players tone if they have good range or not. I’m realizing this by watching this video
BelowAverage not always. clifford brown had high G’s which you would not guess listening to most of his stuff
variation on the lick at 1:48
Almost the lick at 1:47
Was he circular breathing at 4:11?
Yes he was
rebecca frazer I believe he was
What a guy
LA ORQUESTA DE JAZZ!!
WoW!
Coun Basie band playing a to number not usually associated with the band's style of it music.
What was that lick he played at 4:52
damn the lick at 2:34
Can you buy the score to this version of the song anywhere?
2:31 The lick!
Superb!
This reminds me of some Jon Faddis shit.... Except an octave lower lol

Sammy Nestico arrangement ! Rip
can't believe they got an ex-storm trooper to play trumpet!
I hope this is the last thing going through my ears when its time to die.
