This may be the most incredible project to come from the retro community, I never even considered the possibility of reverse engineering the motherboard and then engineering an improved motherboard, and for this to come from one guy blows my mind, it’s the engineers and modders like mathijs that makes this community so great, and the modders and UA-camrs like yourself macho for shining a light on these projects and then being able to dumb it down to be easily understandable and simple enough for anyone to get into modifications, so thank you mathijs and macho, can’t wait see what’s next, I’m hoping this leads to reverse engineered boards for other handhelds

With none of the knowledge needed to do it myself I had to look to commissioning it from someone, unfortunately no one I thought to talk to seemed very interested and I ended giving up on it. Glad to see someone else with the needed skills eventually had the same idea. The thing I'd like to see going forward that I'd thought of at the same time is the main board being reduced in size and a new smaller more comfortable case being made with a larger single battery compartment and made with the new lcd screens in mind. If it's possible maybe include the power, sound & main boards all in one single board or maybe even a Bluetooth module for headphones.

What a fantastic video and a delight to see a new life given to the game gear. Now, this maybe a stretch but it seems he has the talent to pull it off. I would love to see a N64 board redesign for portable use. Ive seen many modders cannibalize existing n64 boards and McGuiver these boards for portable use, but perhaps a board designed with portability would be easier
    Thanks again!

I wish console and controllers manufacturers aimed towards that kind of reliability, longevity and overall quality in their products.

This is really amazing, and I think stuff like this is the endgame for game preservation. I'm very glad to see that it's open source as well. I'd like to see more motherboards like this made in the future for other systems, maybe with some options to use an FPGA to substitute in for the proprietary chips.

I would love to see more mods for the Sega Nomad. I never had a game gear when I was young, but I absolutely LOVED my Nomad.

I'd love to see what he can do for the Gameboy line. This work on the GG is epic.

That's amazing! I've got two dead ones that I've been trying to revive but no luck so far (tried replacing the caps with ceramic ones like in one of your previous videos), so if these boards become more available that would be great to revive them and add them to my collection. I'm wondering if some sort of FPGA chip that mimics the original ASICs would be more viable in the future - maybe that's a job for MVG and other coding/firmware experts? All the same, hoping to see more of Mathijs' work in the future, possibly in other handhelds like the Gameboy Advance. Thanks Tito!

Tito, I've been on a marathon watching your videos. Amazing work, I love everything about them and I really like the fact that you showcase the efforts and incredible work from the modding community. I hope you get the recognition you deserve, love the videos, keep this amazing work up!

This is so cool. Mathijs is amazing. Can't wait to see what he does next. A new motherboard for the 2-asic model would be pretty cool, but since he's already done one game gear it'd be cool to see him do something else, maybe something rare like the wonderswan or neo geo poacket.

Would love to see these kinds of projects for both various Game Boy models, and the Sega Nomad (maybe with the triple bypass rgb mod built in).

The idea of doing things like this gives me hope that maybe someday folks will find a way to make a small replica N64DD that can run image files off an SD card. Could add a lot for modders and homebrew folks!

13:31 - Considering that an Analog TV Tuner is pretty much useless these days now that most markets have transitioned to Digital broadcasts, then that's even less of a con.

I’d personally like to see more switch like mods to allow a dock for displaying to TV and using a controller. Always loved that about the switch and to see it be brought to old consoles would be amazing. Anyways, merry Christmas Tito looking forward to stopping by another stream sometime 🍻

Awesome work from Mathijs! Talking of reverse engineering, and I know it's a totally different job, how about re-engineering the ASIC[s] on an off-the-shelf FPGA? the patents on the actual ASIC have gone public domain for ages, even if they were never released to the public. Yes, I repeat, I know it's a titan work, but it doesn't have to be identical to the original, just compatible, and some improvements may show up on the way...

Awesome work, and with the new shell it looks so good !
I wish he would do that for the original DMG gameboy, with built-in usb-c battery, internal pro sound, and all the cool stuff.
