  • A few months ago a friend of mine got in touch to say his wife found her childhood gamegear but it didn't work and would I like it.
    Hard to turn down an offer like that so let's first see what else came with it then see if we can get it fixed.

    To the viewer who commented "why bother?" on your previous video, I'd reply that the joy you demonstrated when you got the sound working again was reason enough.

      I do tend to get a bit carried away in the moment when these old systems start working.

    Awesome. I've done a couple of these, one using electrolytic replacement capacitors and the other using ceramics. The only difference I make out (so far) is that that the one with the replacement ceramics will not work with my modern 9v switch mode power supply as it goes into protection mode a fraction of a second after the console is powered. I'm suspecting that this is down to additional inrush current given that many of the ceramics in the kit I received have higher capacitance values than the original electrolytics. It seems to work fine with batteries and the origainal sega power supply though.

      Interesting and thanks for the info. As I said it's not something I would do so I've not looked into it in any detail but I would have thought you still want to keep the same capacitance level although maybe use a higher voltage.

    I'm really happy with this video, got a recap coming up myself! This video was really useful. Thanks a bunch for sharing your knowledge 👍

    for the battery pack... if that's NiMH, use low self discharge (LSD) cells. they'll last longer on the shelf.

    The Game Gear was by far the smelliest recap I've ever done.

    i agree the fun of being a collector is fixing and taking care of your consoles computers ect....i wish i could do what you do as far as fixing these great systems...i said that maybe the apple is beyond repair .....by no means was i telling you to quit....nice job as always..

      @CRG  Рік тому +1

      The apple may be beyond repair to be honest but the fun is in trying. It's back on the bench at the minute and I'm giving it one more go. Fingers crossed I can fix it.

    All those pads were in lovely condition all things considered. I’m halfway through recapping my GG and several pads were corroded away to nothing 😅

      Yeah they tidied up well. I think I just got lucky because as I said I've seen some other horror stories. Hopefully you're making a video of your recap? Always interesting to see another take on it.

    I don't think you should substitute Electrolytics with Ceramics.
    They are two different kinds and Dave Jones made some Videos about Ceramic Caps.
    What could, in theory, maybe, work is Polymer Capacitors or eventually Tantalum. At least in A/V Circuits or Bypass Caps.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  Рік тому +2

      Polymer caps probably would work although I think the modern electrolytics will last many many years before giving problems.

  • @RVNR2022
    @RVNR2022 Рік тому +1

    all sound board use smd aluminum caps. 99% of the kit use all through hole component. few people use ceramic cap for the recap. more reliable tha electrolitic ones

    • @CRG
      @CRG  Рік тому +2

      A little disappointing then that the kit didn't include the correct caps although I suppose the through hole parts would work fine.

    • @RVNR2022
      @RVNR2022 Рік тому +1

      @@CRG for me it Is easier not to use the smd elettrolitic ones mainly because is difficult to find the one that fit exact the same as the original. There are tiny cap which fits well when are positioned orizontally. Or even better with ceramic 0805 size

    What is the orange tape you use to cover other components to isolate and insulate them when de-soldering nearby components?

    • @CRG
      @CRG  Місяць тому

      Kapton tape or sometimes sold as high temperature masking tape.

    "Why bother?" Why bother asking a silly question to someone whose channel specialises in repairing and restore retro hardware? Just because something is an antique/vintage doesn't mean it shouldn't be fixed if possible. Anyway, nice work as usual. 🙂

    I really should do the same on my Gamegear. I did a Mcwill screen upgrade on my Lynx and it's very, very good.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  Рік тому

      Yeah if it hasn't been recapped I'd highly recommend it. I looked at the McWill screen but it was a bit out of my price range. Does look great though. Hopefully the AliExpress version of looks good, hopefully it works 🤞

      @JVHShack Рік тому +1

      @CRG Perhaps you may have bypassed the middle person and bought from the source of that kit. I have considered the McWill kit for my wife's GG and find it to be rather expensive for what you get. Could you provide a link to the AliExpress kit that you got?

    I Collect "Vintage" Computer & Video Game "JUNK!" as the wifey calls it lol
    I told her, if she gets her Dream House, I better have a Garage & a Basement.
    the Basement I played off as a Cool Place in the Summer for the Kiddos to play...
    But wouldn't you know...The Furnace & Water Tank are housed in a nice Utility Room that's a good 16'x 12'!
