We Built a $10,000 Subaru that BEAT A Lamborghini

- We modified this old Subaru and made it THREE SECONDS faster than a Lamborghini for LESS than £15,000. We did everything from upgrading the brakes and tyres, to completely stripping the interior and turning up the boost.
Because we wanted to see if two normal guys, with no real mechanical experience and a small budget could really build a car that was capable of beating a supercar. We got some stuff right, we got some stuff VERY wrong - but here’s how it went.
We’ve been modifying this Subaru over the last 6 months to try and make it faster than a Lamborghini for £15,000. Now it’s finally time to see if it can be done.
Over the last 6 months, we’ve fitted an uprated clutch, a set of coilovers, some sticky semi slicks, stripped 136kg of weight, upgraded the brakes, fitted stiffer anti-roll bars and then finally we pushed the car from 196bhp to 304bhp. That means we’ve spent just £9065 of our budget INCLUDING the car.

@@warlxrd5317 What is there to explain, they blew up their car cause they ignored an engine break in period, and the way they modified lowcar was absolutely bafflingly stupid. It was embarassing to watch. They went in with absoltuely no idea as to what they wanted to archive and threw parts at both cars that didn't really make sense.

Fortunately the engine didn't blow up like Donuts Subarus.
Apparently they had a beefier engine, which was the one more prone to blowing up

@@commandergeokam2868 i know first hand that subaru engines have their issues, but i got to thinking about donut media and the problems they had and i think it comes down to 3 things:
1. The desert heat
2. The long sweeping corners (boxer engines without a dry sump haaaaaate these, because it causes oil starvation at the sump and pooling at the heads and valve guides)
3. American cars are notoriously badly maintained in general, though i do think this is probably a non issue in their case.
Best series that I have seen all 2022.... Every single episode was entertaining... 👍👍👍

I'm curious where high/low car would be on that leaderboard it would be great to see all three of those cars together on the same track.
The budget for this car is much lower than the low car, that would definitely be interesting.
Donut's philosophy is just "throw money at things until they work", the scooby wagon is much better built and would smoke donut's wrx's

Donut made a "never buy a Subaru" ad while these guys made a "buy it if you're willing to do a shit ton of work to make it worth the money" ad. Interesting dichotomy.

Despite what commentors may have said, you guys did this right. All the supporting mods (tires, brakes, suspension, etc.)...and then lastly power. Great series!
Duncan mapped my wrx. he is genuinely the best. ran 340 on standard block and box.
Alsp, as a 12 year old, i helped build surrey rolling road with my old man yonks ago. charlie is a good man.

Man, this is exactly the reason why modding a car is so exciting🤩 Beating a Lambo with a Subaru is definitely a magnum opus that deserves to be engraved in a car history museum!
I'd honestly be willing to wait for better weather to see a rematch on a proper circuit like Donnington. Dry, warm weather, and a full race track to really see what times can be achieved. You might even be able to find some more upgrades on the Bananru whilst you're at it??

Now you have the car, try to beat that 1:16.7 when its warm and dry, it was a fair fight, but it doesnt completely translate to optimal track conditions, im sure Scott would agree 😁 And WE get to see more of the content!
For guys that supposedly don’t know much about the mechanics, you certainly did a better job than Donut Media.

yes sir all the right mods = similar to what i did to my SF5 GT forester = super great fun driving car !
Doing that on the standard TD04 turbo is great work. Staying top mounted but enlarging the top mount intercooler and mating it to the TD05 16g turbo gets you to a mapping at 340 / 350hp - for me that was the sweet spot in my Subaru journey. The 2L engine in the blob eye that you have has not really for the head gasket issues of the later 2.5. - Keep going and then take on something hotter still. Nice work. Keep going. I look forward to series 2.
The engine is fine, the 5speed is glass :D but I still want to see Driven media with 40k usd budget, that would be awesome

Ahah definitely, it'd be my dream, and they're inspiring me a lot too. Although I have the budget, i definitely don't have the time, patience, skills and motivation to accomplish such a thing q.q

So, I've owned my WRX 04 Wagon for a couple of years now and it's not my first Subaru. I've uprated the brakes to 8 pot D2s on the front and got braided and new hardlines all round. New Exedy racing clutch and an ultra light fly wheel. I need a new exhaust next and I'm about to strip the interior but I've had doubts. Now I have no doubts. I'm going for it. I'm excited but also on a budget so... this time next year...

The 4wheel drive probably helped significantly. And being turbo you can wind up the power easily.

would still love to see what the WRX could do on a dry day come Spring. How much more could it be pushed? If the Lambo lost 8 seconds between dry and damp, could you think that the WRX could push for a sub 1:15?

I daily a 08 base model mustang but I want to get something else so I can throw it around a track. If I do some good weight reduction and upgrades I think it’s gonna be a fun project like this
Should install a proper cage & Harness for safety and do some more track days! See if it can beat a supercar around a track like Silverstone or something bigger
You guys did a better job than Donut media. Those knobs just set out to drag Subaru through the mud. Hats off to you guys for showing how to do it right.

@drivenmedia can you please specify whether your HP figures were adjusted to calculate crank HP rather than WHP?
Something similar was crossing my mind. Stripping my Audi A6 quatro and going full send on the compressor pully. Then drive it with hearing protection *lol

No real experience, guts an entire vehicle

New it made 221 horsepower AT THE CRANK so 196 at the wheels isn't bad!
All vehicles have a crank hp rating, but there is losses throughout the driveline. So all that power does not actually make it to the wheels.
The 300ish you made at the wheels would put the engine's actual output closer to 330. Unfortunately there no set "this is what you lose" number and all cars are different. Some may lose 20hp some may lose 120hp.
196bhp at the wheels would make more sense as a before figure but there is no way it made over 300bhp at the wheels on the standard TD04.
Conversely if 196bhp was the crank figure to begin with (which would suggest the car was somewhat unhealthy!) I don't understand how it then made such incredible power with the mods/mapping. The TD04 is usually only good for 280bhp with all supporting mods.
My JDM WRX of same era made 273bhp at the crank with the standard downpipe still in place.
