  • The battle between M-Lite models and proper M cars has been a topic of debate since the introduction of M Performance cars. However, deciding which one to buy has become even more challenging with the impressive power and performance of M-Lite models like the BMW M240i and M2. So, let's highlight the key aspects of each to help you make an informed decision.
The BMW M240i boasts several compelling reasons to be considered. It is a small BMW coupe with a relatively conventional design, which is a rarity these days. Its proportions are visually appealing, featuring a long hood, a short rear deck, and the iconic Hofmeister Kink. While it may not be as visually captivating as its predecessor, it still outshines most contemporary Bimmers in terms of appearance.
In terms of performance, the M240i is astonishingly fast. Its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine generates an impressive 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, defying expectations.
One advantage the M240i has over the M2 is its available all-wheel drive system, known as xDrive. This feature enhances all-weather capability and ensures consistent performance, providing confidence and eliminating concerns about traction loss. The M240i can be driven with full force regardless of weather conditions.
Cost is another favorable aspect of the BMW M240i. With a starting price of $49,895, it is significantly more affordable than the M2, which starts at $63,195. Additionally, the M240i offers a more comfortable ride and a quieter cabin, making it an appealing option for daily driving. It also provides interesting color choices, adding to its allure.
However, the M240i does have a few drawbacks to consider. Its steering lacks sharpness and feel, making it less engaging compared to the M2. Additionally, it lacks a manual transmission option, which might disappoint enthusiasts. While it excels as a daily driver, the M240i leans more towards being a good all-rounder than a pure sports car.
Now let's turn our attention to the BMW M2, which has its own highlights. Its 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6 engine produces an impressive 453 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. With a claimed 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds when equipped with the eight-speed automatic transmission, the M2 delivers exhilarating acceleration. The availability of a six-speed manual transmission further enhances the fun and driver involvement.
Handling is another area where the M2 shines. With suspension components derived from the BMW M4, it exhibits remarkable chassis and suspension sophistication, providing a sharp and thrilling driving experience. It offers precision, balance, and poise that truly set it apart.
Visually, the M2 features unique flared fenders, giving it an aggressive and sporty appearance. Its design follows the M car tradition of being assertive and muscular.
However, the BMW M2 has a few drawbacks worth mentioning. Its grille design differs from the M240i's, which might not be as well received. It is also heavier compared to its predecessor, affecting its agility and sharpness. Furthermore, all-wheel drive is not available, which may limit its appeal to customers in colder climates.
Price is another consideration, with the BMW M2 being priced around $63,000. While it offers exceptional performance, only a few tenths of a second separate it from the M240i in terms of acceleration. The track-oriented performance advantage may not be significant for most customers.
In conclusion, both the BMW M240i and M2 offer compelling features. The M240i provides a balance between performance and comfort, making it a versatile sports car suitable for daily commuting and enjoyable on twisty backroads. On the other hand, the M2 delivers a truly exhilarating driving experience, with its powerful engine, sharp handling, and aggressive design. Ultimately, the decision between the two will depend on your priorities and preferences.

Strange thing. In Germany the M240 has 374 HP (compared to 382 HP in US model) and the M2 got 460 HP (US: 453 HP). I know that british and US horsepowers are a bit different to the german used definition. But the difference should go in the same direction and not be opposite.

acctually if you would watch dragrace between these two cars the M240i has much faster acceleration then M2 because of X drive... bmw just cant show on their website that M2 model is slower then M240i... it may have got faster engine but the Xdrive is doing its job...

The grill of the m2 is such a disappointment. Reminiscent of of those dumb late 2000s dodge grills.
