My Babcia (Grandmother) was born and raised there until the Nazi's took her from there when she was 18yo. She was a nursing student and forced into a labor camp in Germany. She is the only one of her family to survive and was not allowed to go back because it was annexed to Ukraine. My Dziadek (Grandfather) was from east of Lwow, a town called Tarnopil (Ternopil now). He was in the Polish Army and a POW for 6 years under the Nazi's. I hope to visit sometime.

Beautiful cityscape and I felt grounded and peaceful inside like everyone was my family I've never been outside of the USA but for over 25years I've felt good about the idea of living in Ukraine as well as a few other European countries like Germany ,Moldova , Bulgaria ,and so on I could feel at rest in Europe something that I haven't ever felt in the United states I don't belong in the USA even though my ancestors came here in 1601 I belong in European countries so I want to thank you Gabriel for helping me to see the beautiful places that are there in Europe I enjoyed watching this video in all honesty it was one of your better videos not because you made a comment about not really intending on doing a video but because it lacked alot of the historical context this video allowed us to feel like we were right beside you walking through the streets and parks it didn't feel like an tour guide video it actually felt like an I'm on vacation from everything video it actually felt more relaxed than some of your other videos where you do some local history background information we got to feel as though we were on an actual vacation

I’m a retired American living in Saranda, Albania. I leave for 3 months each year to start the 1 year visa-free time period over again. I just returned from 2 months in Lviv and it was everything you said and even much more! Fabulous city! And.....SO inexpensive! Almost like Albania in that way!
Thanks for showing some things I didn’t even see! BTW, the place with the oil wells is called The Gaslight. One of the most famous eateries and bar/pub in Lviv. The interior has literally hundreds of oil lamps hanging from the walls and ceiling. The bar serve tiny vials of those multi-colored liquids you saw outside....some kind of designer spirits that are very popular with young patrons👍
    Thanks again!

The map you have shown at the end of your video is not a map of Ukraine. It's a map of Austro-Hungarian Galicja which covered southern Poland and part of today's Ukraine. You can see Cracow and Tatra mountains on this map if you take a closer look. Galicja disappeared when Poland become independent in 1918 after over 120 years of Russian, German and Austrian occupation.

10:26 "Gazowa Lampa" restaurant. Ignacy Łukasiewicz was a Polish pharmacist, engineer, businessman, inventor. He was a pioneer who in 1856 built the world's first modern oil refinery. His achievements included the discovery of how to distill kerosene from seep oil, the invention of the modern kerosene lamp (1853), the introduction of the first modern street lamp in Europe (1853), and the construction of the world's first modern oil well (1854). So you saw there an oil pump :).

Thanks for the walkaround Gabe. Your video was exactly as long as my bus commute home from Manhattan and heckuva more interesting than my view would have been of New Jersey. We had lunch recently in Berkeley on our way to check out Reno, Nevada and such and I thought of u and your dad building a building there. On our way back from Nevada the smoky haze from the Napa/Sonoma wildfire was pretty thick over the northern Bay Area and Central Valley. We stopped in Nevada City for lunch which was without power and most of the businesses were closed - just a few with generators were open. Enjoy Finland with your friend!

Great video on the flavor of Lviv Center. I was there first in about 2001. Then it was just like walking in a black & white movie. In 2003 I was back & was surprized to see the first building exterior being painted. It is the one on the right, lighter building ( Polish built, ~120 y.o.) at the 21:10 mark. I bought the flat on the 4th floor ( & you see one of the bedroom windows on the 4th floor, in the video). The other window overlooks Saborna Cirva (Church) Courtyard (seen at the 26 min mark).
I have been back 15 times since but last in 2017. The economic development has accellerated dramatically since about 2015 & though most of the world is concerned with the "civil-war/Russian-incursion" on the south eastern corner, Lviv is on the Western side of Ukraine & probably the safest of all Ukrainian cities. Tourism to Ukraine is strongest there for that reason, but as well, the Square mile around Ploshtia Rynok ( the City Square that you walked through at the 12:30 mark.. there is a tavern on the square that is said to have been open continuously since the 1400s ) is a UNESCO designated World Heritage site for its archetectual heritage from the height of old Europe ( about 100 to 200 years ago).

There are people that visit only one place outside their country every year. I know people here in Greece that only go to London or Italy every single year, simply because they like it and don't want to change that. p.s. In Poland there are many more things to see than large cities, e.g. Zakopane and its surroundings, the Vistula town, Krakow with a magnificent old town, the Tatra Mountains, the Swietokrzyskie Mountains, the Beskids, the picturesque Kazimierz Dolny, the Białowieża Forest with Bisons, the green lungs of Poland Warmia and Mazury, and Podlasie, where the deepest Lake Hancza is located, and there is also the Baltic Sea coastline with the Lazy and Bukowa lakes separated from the sea by spit of land. Worth seeing is the Hel town, located on the northernmost peninsula of Poland. In winter, sleigh rides (Kulig) are organised in some regions of Poland (one or several horse-drawn sleighs with attached sleighs in the form of a retinue. This is a type of fun organised in the last week of the carnival. It has a long tradition in Poland), ended with bonfire and frying over fire sausages stuck on a stick. There is much more to it, here I presented a small part of it. Poland is a beautiful country with a rich tradition, history and culture. Worth to see! :)

Nice city, not very turistic yet, so that's a good time to visit, I guess you visited Portugal once and you missed to visit amazing places.

Ah, Gabriel...I beg to differ. Let me preface this by saying I too am an extensive traveler. Difference with me and you is that I do not vlog and do not breeze through places, but choose to slow travel. I just spent a month in Lviv and wanted so much to tell you of all the underground secret places you missed while there. But my urge to comment today is in regards to Poland. Do you have some historical connection, as your choice to repeatedly not go there over the years when you have danced around it for years holds something to it. I am actually glad you haven't gone because it already has been taken over by swarms of tourists and you vlogging it would only increase that. Having said that, I chose to spend my entire Schengen Zone allotment time in Poland (am also a U.S. citizen-Oregon). That is how awesome I find Poland. Why do you believe it is like so many other European countries? It is cleaner (great mural art, but no graffiti) much more affordable, beautiful, has a history like none other. I could go on and on, but when you do eventually get there, go to Krakow first! And speak about the ways it is not like other European countries you have been too. You have been near Poland so many times, yet chose not to go there...something deeper going on that had you avoid going there. I wish you would go but not vlog about it as it is quickly turning into the sardine nature of Prague. Prague is crammed these days. Anyway, happy travels...

To miasto zamieszkiwali Polacy a z nimi wielu Żydów Ormian!

Oooh, at 10:45 you said, "what the heck..." and the boys ran toward the laptop immediately! Hahaha. They are obsessed with that phrase recently :-D The architecture reminds me of Bratislava and many other cities in Slovakia and Czechia. Nice video!

Funny. "What the heck" is the milder version of "what the hell". A general statement of surprise or confusion.

I went to Krakow this year it was great lots to do and see particularly beyond the city into the countryside I fancy poznan, Gdansk and Warsaw but I get that ultimately it may not appeal to you and you travel to places that wouldn't be to everyone else's taste. Poland was very touristy.

Hi Gabriel, I wish could travel as much I believe there’s a certain richness obtained from traveling it’s an education you can’t quantify. It’s true your alone on these trips you can’t do everything it’s impossible and I’m sure your planning on seeing other things in the future but for now your seeing what I’m sure you have planned. I also believe the purpose of this traveling is also to get other people involved in traveling and seeing parts of the world that have yet to see and experience that richness with traveling anywhere.
