Jack White is definitely an "acquired taste". He's not for everybody, and I can relate to that...but to me he is beyond GREAT. I just somehow "get" everything he does. I'm always surprised when I hear something by him for the first time...it's never predictable. He is a true original. If he's not your cup of tea, please go listen to Britney or Justin or Celine...and leave us alone here, so we can soak in some cool Jack, without distraction.

Mountain music at its best! This kind of music came from forgotten poor folk, who were lucky to own A banjo! Proud to say some of those same poor folk of the hills of Tennessee who gave way to me. Some of the hardest working people who would share their last crumb.

To the people leaving the negative comments; I'd like to point out 2 things. First, this is a live version and as we all know live versions lack the refinement of the studio versions. Second, for those of us that grew up with and still listen to bluegrass this is pretty great stuff. Bluegrass isn't suppose to sound refined. Hell, it's not even suppose to sound professional. This is the music that grandmothers and aunts sang in the evening after dinner, miners around a fire..... I think his goal was to represent the true nature of bluegrass in it's unrefined glory. Perhaps the movie would give you better context.

Oh man that movie loses the universal feel of this, I am from Englishtown the Bluegrass Hall where Bill Monroe thrived, called it the Capital of Bluegrass and I grew with blue and in my heart and in my soul, I hear this train roll over Jordan on hot coals with no brakeman and no track to refrain, as if to be refined, it would be such the vinegar as to wine, a matter of taste perhaps, then again, listen to that voice and how deep the feel, there is nothing it lacks and for us who sees beyond the axis beyond our eyes, the evermore in our horizons, this lacks nothing to apologize, Kenneth such a darn great sympathetic comment, you have real heart and I do commend, yet for those who listen only with their Disney Dumbo mainstream ears, try a bit of being just being where the music is- it transforms my place into an endless room of windows without walls to fall into, and there is no gravity, no such bounds as would be defined as being depravity, in brevity, Jack's beautiful version, man, it sets me free. Best regards to you and yours... ~RaVen DaWn~ a man of many worlds.

@@RaVenDaWn999 I am a woman of the city, the suburbs, and strip malls, but this song just connects me to people everywhere in every time who sang to unburden their aching backs and weary souls as they toiled in anonymity. They are still here among us, yearning to return to their places of worship and shared belief. This mournful, yet hopeful song is such an anthem to their endurance of heart and unflagging faithfulness.

For all the versions I've heard of this song, Jack's still is my favorite. He lies this weariness in his voice that is so perfect for this song! An almost broke voice with a mindset of just going on to the end. He just takes it home!

"The Wayfaring Stranger" (a.k.a. "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" or "I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger"), Roud 3339, is a well-known American folk and gospel song likely originating in the early 19th century about a plaintive soul on the journey through life. As with most folk songs, many variations of the lyrics exist.

Every once in awhile you see an immediate "Classic" a Bonnie Raitt, a Stevie Ray Vaughn.....some people have thing about likeing something or disliking based on popularity or somehow trying to makes themselves seem more "hip" or "unique" as if their opinion on someone elses work makes them special. The music speaks for itself. Jack White is a Classic and Legend, it's been a decade or so since I felt that way about any new musician. If you feel more "elite" by turning up your nose, have at it.

This is the first time I've listened to this. Jack White is brilliant. I also found a version he did of an old Dolly Parton tune. Jolene. It blew me away. This one made me cry. I suppose those who do not like this type music, either are very young and in to wrap and all of that, or have no Southern Roots or exposure do this kind of music. I am Southern. Had many relatives who played lots and lots of string instruments. They did bluegrass and gospel. At family gatherings, wherever I was and heard the Pickin getting started, I would run just sit close and listen as long as as long as they would play even some of my Southern relatives who were present, did not appreciate this unique genre. I never understood that. Anyway, yeah Wayfaring Stranger made me cry. Much love to all of you out there who still appreciate this music.

Jack White's rendition of this fine olde tune sings of a tortured heart and mind. Fantastic and well done. it was done with the tradition that it was ment to be done in.

Love this song gotta keep them old traditional tunes alive. This one I think will live on forever and ever. First time I heard it was on a recording of a ban called Trampled by Turtles from Duluth Minnesota. I love songs that have this haunting kind of raw energy to them.

An incrediblely versatile musician who makes anything he does sound great. I had no idea the man had ever done any bluegrass and his vocal workon this one is raw and filled with emotion.

I am very happy the people with eclectic taste in music like Jack have brought songs like this to the masses. Another great band influenced by the blues is The Black Keys. Greatly influenced by Junior Kimbrough (spelling might be wrong). Check it out. Between Jack Whites music and The Black Keys, I feel relieved to have something new worth listening to. Please don't rip me apart if you don't agree. It is ok to think differently!

Funny that people seem to forget that about 1843 the Virginia Minstrels followed by other "Minstrel" shows toured Africa and Europe, including Ireland, where they introduced a great deal of Appalachian music. Some of these tunes later migrated back to North America under the guise of Irish music and or African music. The street goes in both directions and it is wonderful that musicians borrow from each other and blend styles. This enriches music for everyone.
