  • Drove to Fiesta Island with 3 model rockets: a Two Stage with name I forgot because I lost the paper, a Boosted Bertha Two Stage Rocket, and a Big Daddy rocket. We painted the Big Daddy red white and blue and nicknamed it the "Patriot Rocket". The Over The Line tournament was going on so they restricted available field use to a small available area and did not allow the launch of double stage rockets. The first double rocket would not fit the recommended C-6-0 and C-6-5 motors so we glued to base and used an A motor with some paper wrap to make it fit as a single stage.
My son said it was going to be a lawn dart and it did a 180 degree turn then hit the ground. The motor was sufficiently strong to break the base section of the motor.
The Patriot Big Daddy made two launches. We were concerned about the rocket drifting over the OTL players, and used a lot of paper wadding on the first launch which caught fire and started to smoke. On the second launch, we used the packing provided by DARTs but packed the parachute tight to delay its deployment a little. The parachute did not function and it was a little singed when we pulled it out, but it looked good otherwise. The large Patriot was easy to see and follow on the launch and even survived a nose first crash on the second launch with minimal damage.
Overall, fun day. Enjoy the video.
