    Silly comparison. 38mm 4grain sugar motor, likely full "I" class(somewhere around 600Ns), vs a 29mm hybrid which likely came in at a "G" or "H" class(somewhere around 160-300Ns). They didn't really configure the competition to be highest altitude per motor volume, or propellant mass, or anything. They didn't use the same size rocket either. The Sugar motor was just plain bigger, and naturally if you compare a bigger motor and a smaller one, the bigger one will go higher.

    The sparks in sugar rocket is from added in Iron (III) oxide for better combustion. This can make the fuel 20% more energetic, by increasing the burn rate.

    • @Frisso92_
      @Frisso92_ Рік тому +1

      Hi, I'm doing research about rocket propellants and the use of iron oxide for better combustion is really interesting. Can you elaborate on how does it work? I thought that it was a little like the sulfur in gunpowder, but I'm really not sure And especially, in what proportion is better for the combustion?

    • @inverse2k1
      @inverse2k1 9 місяців тому

      the iron oxide is well known in the field to be a catalyst in sugar based propellants, it increases the burn rate by quite a bit. The 'why' it works requires an explanation way behind the scope of this place, in very short, it lowers the reaction activation energy. @@Frisso92_

    Back in the 60s, the kids down the street were making rockets using sugar + potassium nitrate as a propellent. All went well until one of the kids had a few fingers torn off when the rocket motor exploded on him, as he prepared to launch. I was still too young at the time to mess with any of that, but just a few years later I briefly experimented with rockets (but I used commercially available rocket motors). Then I moved on to RC airplanes, gliders and helicopters.

    This is what Hamas use in their Qassam rockets BTW, a sugar plus potassium nitrate mix.
    You can use fertiliser to get the potassium nitrate, which is probably where they get it.
    Once you pack enough in there, they are able to get their homemade rockets to go up to 30km in distance, which is pretty impressive, it also carries a 10kg explosive head.

    The hybrid with PVC lost a whole lot of Nitrous Oxide venting outside of the motor when fill tube stayed attached all the way up the tower. U/C valves are terrible for this, especially in such small motor.

    "Sugar is a great fuel because it has so much Hydrogen in it". Nope. There is a reason they're called Carbohydrates. For every two atoms of Hydrogen in a carbohydrate molecule, there is an atom of Oxygen. The Hydrogen already wasted its energy. The only energy left to burn is from Carbon. This is also why alcohol is not as good fuel as gasoline.

    • @hunterwheeler5510
      @hunterwheeler5510 5 років тому +11

      They’re not saying it’s better than other fuels, but for being sugar, a common household item that isn’t dangerous then it’s a good fuel

      True. And sugar is also a very unstable molecule with a low burning temperature and lots of carbon so if you likened this sugar/potassium nitrate fuel to the more common black powder rocket motors, the sugar takes the place of both the carbon and sulphur in a common black powder mixture.
