  • Welcome to a tour of my zone 3 Minnesota garden in July! This is a special video because not only is it my first YT video (woo hoo!), but this is my first official revealing of my NEW garden on our new 240 acre homestead!
We tilled and prepped the area on May 30th and I moved all of my plants over on June 2-4! Most of them I had already planted in my existing garden (this move happened rapidly and shook our plans a bit!). I transplanted what I could and started over on what I could not (potatoes, corn, rutabagas, carrots, green beans, etc.). I'm a little behind schedule due to this, but I'm so thrilled with how it's going so far!
Garden planning is one of my favorite parts of gardening, but I know it can be very overwhelming. I'd love to help you prep and plan your garden with my comprehensive course "How to Plan a Garden: Step-By-Step". Check it out here: learn.thehomes... and use my code "GARDEN" for 10% off! See you over there :)
    ITEMS IN THIS VIDEO:

-Extra mini fence posts for the fencing (highly recommend!): amzn.to/3DiEe3C
-Solar powered electric fence controller (this is my favorite one and what I've used for 8 years; don't get the one I show in the video!): amzn.to/3DlaYsY
-Plug in electric fence controller: amzn.to/3K70T6J

My hot and sweet peppers really came along in August but I still have not figured out bell peppers here in zone 4 MN. They are always puny and only a few on each plant.@@thehomesteadingrd

Your garden is incredible!! Would definitely love an August tour. There's not many Zone 3 youtubers so I'm excited to follow along. I'm Zone 3 from British Columbia, Canada and just a beginner. Can't wait for more videos!!

Great video, loved the tour, subscribed to your channel. Some friendly tips: De-leaf the lower leaves on your peppers once they don't look brilliant, top leaves do most of the work (per Charles Dowding). Stake your zucchini to a T post, gently tying it as it grow, removing lower leaves, huge space saver and improves air flow (you know the drill). To dramatically improve your clay soil, bury your entire garden in leaves (12-24 inches) in the Fall. Then in Spring they'll be greatly reduced, move them aside to plant in the soil or rake into walkways. If you use whole leaves they'll mat and really help keep weeds down. Whereas if you shred them they'll break down much faster. Doesn't hurt to throw some nitrogen on top of the leaves in the Fall. All the rain will wash the nitrogen thru the leaves helping to break them down faster. By Summer the leaves will be mostly "gone" and turned into beautiful topsoil by the worms which love leaves. Also a great mulch in the summer. Growit Buildit YT channel has a good video series on it, showing each year how it converted his heavy clay soil into beautiful topsoil. Cheers.

Congratulations on the land purchase and the beautiful garden! I am learning so much from you, would love a monthly garden tour if you did that. I'm in zone 3b here in WI, and this is all so helpful.

Thank you so much for this informative video!! You did a thorough job with it!
Yes I would like to see a monthly video of your garden during the year
I have the poultry netting for my chickens and I have been very pleased with it. I have all hens so I bought a brown Chinese goose to keep out hawks. So for, no predators.
I did not know I could purchase the stakes and corner post holds. I’ll be ordering some
When you have time I would like for you to share your pickle, kimachi and other recipes you use for your garden produce
I am so very happy for you🙌

Oh my gosh...I feel so bad I didn't see this yesterday 😞 I follow you religiously on IG and have been begging for a video here on UA-cam!! I definitely made sure to touch the bell so I get any future videos 😂👍
You garden is really doing fantastic all things considered. You two have been busting your backsides getting everything done at your new place. Just think how beautiful next year's garden will be! Will you be expanding it at all?
And YES definitely, please do an August garden tour.
Actually any type of video from your homestead would be fantastic ❤️
    Thank you

No worries - I'm glad that you were able to find my YT video and I appreciate your kind words! I am so happy with how well everything transplanted and eager to see how next year will be with a normal gardening schedule :) I would love to expand the garden, but my electric fence is almost maxed out! Maybe I need a second one :)

I did not realize you could plant broccoli around this time and it would produce by the end of the season. I’m zone 5 so it should work. Thank you

You sure can! However, it might be too late if you're starting from seed. I started these indoors on 5/31.

THANK you for the tour! It is beautiful. I love seeing gardens. You certainly have done a ton of work. 😃 I'd be interested to see the growth and harvest in August. I am new to follow you. I love that you have similar weather as I.
I'm in Michigan about 20 minutes away from the migardener. After I found him, he has changed and educated me on so many aspects of gardening. I am truly grateful for people like you and Luke. I frequently visit the store and his events, I can honestly say Luke is ALWAYS happy like he is in the videos.
How many SQ feet is your garden space?

    How fun! Thank you!
Question, how do you water everything? And two, nightshades always get devoured for me. How do you keep pests away?

    • @thehomesteadingrd
      @thehomesteadingrd  Рік тому

We have a well and the cabin isn't too far away, so we are bringing a hose over. What pests do you have? I personally don't do anything for pest control minus picking them off when I see them, and I use companion planting with the flowers.
