    Thank you for sharing this Heidi! My kitchen is very small and gets so hot when I cook for longer periods, so summers are brutal for canning. I just rescued a turkey fryer similar to yours and I'm over the moon excited to use it like you do. I don't know why I never thought to use it this way, thanks again.

    I have a screened pop up 12x12 shade shelter that's where I use my single burner . I use painted plywood on saw horses for my prep counter. Use the hose for water source for my old sink that sits in another sheet of plywood countertop. Actively thinking of changing out the single burner for a Camp Explorer not as many BTU's but still plenty I think.

    A propane camping stove is a good idea. You can get 2 or 3 burners. That means you can use it for 2 canners. Another way is to use 22 wick kerosene cook stove. St. Paul Mercantile sales a steel Butterfly brand unit. They are made to hold the largest canner. If you are interested in looking into kerosene as an alternative, visit Miles Stairs Wick shop. He has a treasure trove of information on kerosene use & safety. God bless.

      You can use the propane camp stove. You can get 2 or 3 burners. There are several YT videos on canning with these. An extra burner gives you a place to keep lids warm or two canners going. The legs detach & you can build a table set up to place burner unit on.

      @RainCountryHomestead  4 роки тому +2

      Not at all a dumb question and in fact I go over that in another FAQ video I have coming out but since that will be a couple weeks yet, the answer is that yes you can but it only seems to work on the wide mouth ones in the older style (NOT EZ seal and NOT the regular mouth of either style). In 2014 I vacuum sealed up coconut and sunflower seeds using the wide mouth Tattlers and they worked great. Still have several jars sealed up from that time

    So Heidi Do you prepare everything indoors and then just take the jars outside to the canner? I am trying to get this figured. I just cant can in my kitchen....its too small... Would love to see a video of something where you take us through the whole process. I will go back and look for anything on your older videos. I have only canned a couple of times. I find it tedious because of time and space but I really want to do it. I have constant trepidation about it. I know its not hard but for some reason I get really stressed out. I don't have an extra set of hands and that is always helpful the first few times until you get comfortable. ugh

    What about using the hotplate for canning - if it is plugged in to a normal outlet?

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  2 роки тому

      Most hot plates do not get hot enough nor are they stout enough to handle the weight of a full canner. Electricity is electricity, does not matter if it is solar, public, or gas generator. It is the wattage of the hot plates themselves that are the issue. Some get hot enough to bring water to a low boil but not a hard enough boil for canning.

    I used my glass top burner with my All American Pressure canner and the element went bad. I ended up having to replace my cooktop. So, I used the pressure canner on my rocket stove with success. I had to babysit my canner on the electric stove anyway, so it didn't make a difference as far as not being involved. Since then I have a friend who owns a gas range and we can together. Easier clean up than using the rocket stove. But the rocket stove works. Just make sure you cover your cooker in soap so the suit washes off easily; and higher up than you would expect. Thank you Heidi for all if your knowledge that you share. ❤

  • @tinnerste2507
    @tinnerste2507 4 роки тому +1

    My rocket stove boils water faster than my propane range, i like to use pinecones, small twigs and tree bark cause we chop firewood and have tons laying around. I suspect that if you use the same kind and amount of fuel the heat sould be consistant enough? Ive never canned anything on mine, but ive boiled and fried foods with less temperature swings than an electric stove top. I use an old oven tray to support the pot over the chimney, but a slab of iron might be even better for canning at a consistant temperature, if you can support all that weight on the oven....

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 роки тому +2

      Someone else recently was saying that their electric stove was not getting hot enough to get the water to boil for canning, that is very odd. They must be making the burners with less wattage. I do not know much about Presto but I do believe I have seen people use them on propane so it may be likely they are covering their own butts like All American does one theirs by not recommending using on glass top though many have and do. Hoping someone here can answer that for you.

    A quick note, I use a induction hot plate dual, NUWAVE Double Precision Induction Cooktop, Portable, Powerful with 2 Large 8” Heating Coils, 94 Temperature Settings from 100°F to 575°F in 5°F Increments, 2 - 11.5” Heat-Resistant Cooking Surfaces - no this is not an ad for the product.
    It's just that I found using my cast iron cookware on an induction top so much faster AND incredibly responsive within seconds, not minutes of my temperature changes.
    With induction cook tops you will save even more energy. On some data it is claimed that you will use 50% less power to do the same job.
    As a test when I first had my induction top. I timed how long it would take to boil 1 cup of water using various cast iron cookware. The result was amazing!
    1 cup of water = 1 minute.
    It was not very scientific, just a quick observation.
    Now for another non-scientific observation.
    With both "burners" on it did take up to at least 35 minutes to bring approximately 4 quarts of cold tap water to boil. But I also did not have the lid on that pot, so there is that.
    And thank you for pointing out using a deep fry turkey burner. I had a idea it would work just fine!

    Good morning, Heidi. I just used my pressure canner for the first time in close to 45 years. Yep, 45: not a typo! Of course the instruction manual is likely around here somewhere. I didn’t remember to leave the petcock open to evacuate the air. I bottled bone broth to get some of it out of the freezers. I’m at sea level (open ocean at the foot of the garden) so processed pints for 30 minutes at close to 15 lbs and quarts for 40 minutes at the same. My kitchen has the Garland restaurant stove with the most powerful burners and keeping it at 10 lbs is impossible without stacking the iron thingys on top of each other and I don’t trust that it would be stable enough with jars and water in the canner. Do you think it’s safe to use the canned broth or should I reprocess the jars since I forgot about venting out the air for 10 minutes? I’ve never known another soul in this part of the world who had a pressure canner. Probably only about 5 percent of the population here even cooks from scratch.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 роки тому

      I personally believe it will be fine as long as the right time and pressure were used and all the jars have sealed.

      Thanks, Heidi. I’ve been watching your U-tube channel since I discovered it. You’ve inspired me to resume doing the things I used to do (way back when my friends and I considered ourselves “hippy” chicks, sorta’). Like you, I cook this time of year on a wood cook stove but for this, the constant temperature is best served with the gas stove. Years ago, I used an old propane burner that my dad had in his fishing boat outside on the deck.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  2 місяці тому +1

      You can take them inside at anytime, as long as you have a towel or something to set them on so the heat does not ruin the countertops. I usually just let them cool outside unless it starts raining then I bring them in right away so the cold rain on the hot jars does not cause them to crack

      The little gray triangle is to the right of the video title at least on an Android phone. Also agree with what Edie said.

    Do you recommend stainless steel
    Or is aluminum canner ok?

      Most canners are aluminum, including the All American. In this case it is not something to fear as you are not cooking in it, you are canning and the water does not get forced into the jar but rather air is being forced out of the jars

    off subject.... have you had the Augason Farms black bean burger mix.? If so, do you know of other ways of using it, not just to make burgers?

    Can you use stock pots to can? What pots can you use besides canners that are excellent alternatives?

      You can use stock pots for water bath canning but not for pressure canning

    How many BTUs is your propane burner?

    We made a wind shield from 24 inch galvanized metal flashing.
    It has a long metal hook to hold it closed, and wire loom covering on the edges so no rubbing on the propane line.
    Now our turkey fryer... has much more dependable flame control.

    I seriously wouldn't recommend even purchasing a glass top range. Back when we had electricity I owned one.
    Yeah ,they look neat but once heated they take forever to cool down. One of us was forever getting burned or worse yet a cat would get burned.
    Then one day my husband simply dropped a mug on the top and it shattered.
    So, uhm no I definitely wouldn't suggest canning on one

      I have had my glass top for 25 years and never had a problem with it and I am a klutz in the kitchen. However, if we ever replaced it, I would go with propane for various reasons, I have always been very pleased with the glass top as the flat surface makes it multi purpose and clean up is a breeze.
