love this era of Obituary. heavy hardcore riffs + thrash metal speed sections + death metal soloing and vocal style. not overly technical or complicated, just heavy and groovy. Cause of Death one of the greatest death metal albums of all time!
Obituary is unique, true to themselves, original, hardcore, grassroots, pure, and death metalish.. but in their own way.. on their terms.. like a new sub-genre of Death Metal.. the most supreme Metal. Their music is profoundly pervasive. They are metal gods. PERIOD.
Can you believe how technical this guys are? Notes, vocals, fucking everything. Not surprised yet? Well, 30 fucking years after they still sound exactly the same. What an amazing fucking band man. Seriously.

This is just beyond amazing! I'm so freaking stoked! Great sound and James Murphy era? My God! The best eargasm ever. Why didn't I find this footage before? I am watching this alone in my room after smoking a stogie and let me tell you, I'm zoning like never before! Obituary forever!!!
I was very lucky to have seen obituary live back in 90 on this tour. They were at Bogart's downtown Cincinnati Ohio, I'll never forget it man. James murphy killed it that night. The whole band did. It was insanely fn brutal.
FUCK YEAH!!!! I was at this show! The Country Club was the shit back then. I saw all the Death Metal bands that played there... The Hollywood Palladium and the Troubadour were two other awesome places for Death Metal shows... Good Times!
I was at this show! Fucking Killer! Sepultura was supposed to play last but for some reason they played before Obituary and Sadus. Alot of people left. I guess Obituary was mopping the floor with them on tour.
A G E M 🤟 One of the very best footage of the oldschool times 🤟 Whoever did film this video is as genius as the band! 🤟 THANX SO MUCH for uploading! Cheers!
Brilliant footage from a golden age. James Murphy had unfortunately already moved on from Obituary when I saw them at the Marquee (UK) in 91 with the Cause of Death album. Great to see this video with him in the line up 🙏
I love how the rhythm guitars have OBVIOUS flanger on them pretty much all the time. Make we wonder how many gigs I've been to who had this and I never noticed back in the day!
Nope, no flanger at all on any of the guitars, rhythm or lead... neither one of us even owned one, and we'd have crucified any soundman that did that to us, lol... no, what you are likely hearing is the effect caused by the movement of the camera/mic as the videographer changed positions.
@@JamesMurphyProducer Holy crap, I think you're right actually. "Flange the old-fashioned way: PHASE CHANGES OVER TIME". I think it's just reflections of the sound coming back on top of the direct sound due to - like you said - the microphone moving as it records. Cool effect though!
This is without a doubt my favorite death metal band of all time. I had forgotten James Murphy was even in the band but there he is in all his glory and six string mastery. They are intense and still are. I want to see them live but I think I will have to go to Charlotte to do this.
I saw this tour at the famous L'Amour in Brooklyn da crazy shit was I was 16 years old and went to go see Sepultura with my cousin and when Obituary opened it was like the best show I had ever seen I was an instant fan the power Aggression the whole crowd was either headbanging or moshing but nobody was standing its truly 1 of the best shows Ive seen and after they finished Sepultura played and it was never the same, Obituary completely stole the show.
This was a great show except for the guy I got into a fight with. Some weirdo kept pulling my hair over and over and over. I kept telling him to go F*ck off and he persisted to yank the back of my hair down pretty hard to. I had enough turned around and punched him right in the mouth. Problem solved. It was right at the end of Sepultura's set. Maybe the guy who was pulling my hair will see this.
It was a 6-band show and Sepultura actually played in the middle. The first three bands were local thrash bands who "paid to play" and thus paid the promoter's expenses for the gig. After seeing three local bands, no one wanted to slam through two more bands before Sepultura, so the headliner played 4th, then Obituary, and Sadus played last.
@@JamesMurphyProducer - Would love to see a video of all the guitars you’ve used on albums and tours throughout your career, if you still have most of them!?
The main camera was the Canon A1D Hi8 camera on the SteadiCam JR, and editing as done in UMatic-SP with a Video Toaster. The balcony camera was a similar model, Canon A1 mkII. But what really makes this video is the smoke and the lighting, which I was not involved in!
This is the best footage you'll find of obituary live in 1990.

James Murphy fit perfectly into Obituary's sound, CAUSE OF DEATH has so many great solos, shame he didn't last long with the band
such a damn shame indeed!
James Murphy is definitely one of my favorite death metal guitarists 🎸
Dude is a Death Metal royalty.

Jesus Christ... James' solos are just a delicacy to my ears! Wow, so clean, so deep, so warm, so perfect! That guy was Gold
James Murphy is one of my favorite guitarist, also check out the Spiritual Healing, the album he did with Death.
Better, check out the solos he did with Solstice on their self titled.

Same. The solo is so freaking amazing.
Prime Obituary, peak death metal

Well, Sepultura was headlining the tour and thusly they played last, so yeah… People definitely left after Sepultura played 😎
