There's been a million Death Metal frontmen since the early days of Obituary, but no one has yet to sound as original and as instantly recognizable as John Tardy. Van Drunen from Pestilence, Asphyx, Hail of Bullets has a similar technique, but it's easy to tell them apart
John is the ultimate death metal vocalist. Many of these guys try too hard to be heavy, but John just does it second nature. Saw them back in the 90s and the pit was like a buzz saw. Ever since then, I have been a fan. I would describe Obituary as classic death metal. They are the god fathers of the genre
I have seen them once live about 5 years ago. The thing that struck me about them most was that they were so into it (performing) and were not just going through the motions more so then a lot of bands I've seen. That might possibly have been because it did not seem so rehearsed (if that makes sense)
I agree, Obituary along with Overkill and Kreator are the best bands I've seen live no other gets even close to them, maybe Anthrax with John Bush too that show I did attend was crazy af from start to finish
Thanks for sharing this interview. John has always been such a nice dude, I have seen them many times since the early 90s & he has never been above talking to the fans. I'm glad Obituary achieved success. They deserve it.
John is such a humble guy and so is his brother and the rest of the guys in the band it’s awesome because these guys show up in jeans and a T-shirt and just do what they do obituary rules 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘😊💀💀💀
❤❤❤❤🤘🏽🤘🏽 the first live Obituary show had me hooked… I look forward to each one I can attend🤘🏽🤘🏽 they absolutely rock. Wonderful human beings ❤❤❤OBITUARY 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
What a great dude! Love this band so much. Followed them since Cause of Death. That wasn't yesterday. I was the only kid in school listening to death metal. I was an anomaly.
John is a good guy with an instantly recognizable death metal voice. Admittedly, I wasn't an Obituary fan back in the day. I was more a Death fan. I got to meet Chuck as well. But that's another story. Obituary rules. And this is a damn good interview because you get to see who the real man is singing that garbled vocal style stuff! Love it!
LEGEND… I grew up listening to their music and still love it. Not many bands can maintain their style over years, but Obituary do it successfully! Thanks guys!
I have been lucky as hell to hang out with John and the rest of the band a couple times and Trevor a third time. They are beyond cool and humble and just fun to be around. Love them! 🖤🤘
I did the same a few years back when the obies were supporting carcass. I like carcass but have been enthralled with Obituary since Cause of Death. When the Obies left the stage that night, my instinct just told me to leave a happy man. Never heard a note of carcass. O-bit-uary still being chanted as I walked out the door
I've seen Obituary live a few times (awesome) but this is one of the first times i've really seen his face cuz usually his really long hair is covering it haha. Good interview.
Very cool guy , I've only been fortunate enough to see them once, it was a goody, Sadus ,obituary, and sepultura, swallowed in black , cause of death , and beneath the remains ....killed.
Great interview! I saw these guys open for Amon Amarth this past year and they blew me away. They were the highlight of the show for me, and I feel bad that I never caught on to these guys earlier. I've since been collecting their library and I really really love it. His vocal style has this punk edge to it that just feels so right for DM! The latest album IS fantastic all around. The vocals are \m/. Hope to see them again on their headlining tour this year.
Obituary still killing it...Heck yeah...Bravo!!!😎😎😎... I still got a ticket stub left from Obituary, napalm death, and Carcass together in Wilmington NC. from the late 1980s or early 1990s 😎😎😎😎😎😎 and at 54 years old I now still love the heaviest of metal!
Of the foundation of death metal 🤘 Obituary have been for me many many times (count lost) insanely fun and fantastic to experience live. Good interview!
What a cool, humble dude! I had one or two Obituary cassette tapes as a teenager in the 90s and I always wondered how on earth the singer could make every utterance sound so brutal and tortured. Who knew he was so friendly and ordinary?
John is such a classy, humble and smart guy. I'm very impressed! Obituary is such a great band! Trevor is like him, classy, humble and smart. Definitely the reasons why these guys are still going strong.
Seems like a totally down to earth guy. I was already a longtime metal fan and the second Obituary album was one of my first introductions to death metal, along with Deicide and Morbid Angel's second records. Still dig that stuff.
I remember when I started a band back in the 80's because of Celtic Frost and then I got a tape from tape trading. It had Xecutioner labeled on it. It was all the songs from the first album but this was in 1988, before they changed their name. Been a fan ever since.
I was 16 when the end complete came out . Be er heard any death metal didn't even like Metallica at the time and was into more hair bands like jovie and skid row. But I ended up buying that album and it was no turning back from there . Now 44 and I still jam out obituary. 👍
True we payed allot more attention to what we had. Sometimes you also saw others "knowing no better" stuck with a handful of albums over a year's period. Great how enthusiastic and how naturally saturated folks were back then. But i am even a little younger, and was already having a treasury of exposure, because at the library kids could rent cd's. Thankful of having had those days.
One of the best bands ever ,especially LIVE! Grew up in Chicago ,now I stay in Fort Worth. If they role through the DFW area. I will be there....with my son. Come on through. So I can teach a lesson. Plz
To me JT looked like an angry little kid in videos like "I don't care" he seems far from that but I was blown away by their sound growing up in the 80s n 90s New Zealand the only way of discovering bands like Obituary really was word of mouth bootlegging tapes off of yer prized original cassette for other kids to listen to creating more fans of the genre leading us brave enough to venture deeper into the realm of the metal Gods for more beautiful music. Excellent vid cheers 🍻
I remember seeing Obituary open up for Cannibal Corpse in Philadelphia about 6 years ago. Every member of CC stood stage right and watched the full set. That night, Obituary stole the show.
I've always loved Jonh's vocals. One of the greats. I've always felt his voice, while being a landmark of death metal vocals, has an almost hardcore-punkish quality to it, which a thoroughly enjoy.
It’s funny because John is from Florida and Alex Webster is from New York originally but sometimes while listening to John speak it reminds me of Alex.
I'm glad he mentioned that they were only slated for 35 minutes on they're tour. I was disappointed that they were given so little time. But on the happy side. They'll be back for they're dying of everything tour and be the headliner! I only got to see them once back in like 1990 and never forgot that show. Then I was able to see them just last year in November I think it was? I think Cattle decapitation and Carcass were given too much time imo.. But I went and bought they're new cd from Greywhale and was very pleased that I found an extra cd cover inside that was signed by all the band while they were here!! I only paid like $17 or so!! So I'll make sure to see they're next concert in SLC I think in May!
John Tardy is maybe the most articulate dude I ever listened, I always understand perfectly what he says, I wonder if it has to do with where he comes from, etc

Him sayin he still texts his mom when he makes the billboards is awesome
John is just a happy dude, he seems to not even have special preparations for his voice. It seems to come naturally. Amazing.
I agree for real bro.
Long time Obituary fan, John Tardy's voice is iconic, and he is such a great person!

Those two stand above the rest
Van Drunen🤘 Asphyx has clawed their way to my number 1 favorite DM band.
Then there is Chuck.
Yes.. mr Drunen has instant recognition for me when he sings. Love Asphyx and Hail of Bullets 🤘🏻🔥🔥
@@Forferdelse666sounds like hes gurgling razor blades....one of the best....consuming impulse is a masterpiece

Obituary are a treasure to the universe. The first death metal band I heard and eventually the band that made me a fan of death metal.
World Demise was one of my most played metal albums in the 90s with Chaos AD.
2 spectacular albums
I bought their new album-Dying of everything and was really impressed. They still have it.On top of that they seem like really chill dudes.
I went to their concert a couple of days ago and was literally amazed. They blew me away. Probably the best metal act I've seen live
They are bad asses...

John is a gift to death metal fans; the most original voice out there. He sounds terrifying sometimes lol.
Thanks for sharing this interview. John has always been such a nice dude, I have seen them many times since the early 90s & he has never been above talking to the fans. I'm glad Obituary achieved success. They deserve it.
So well said frenn
They really are down to earth dudes, one of the best early death metal bands in the world
Good interview. Love Obituary and John's voice is iconic.
John is such a humble guy and so is his brother and the rest of the guys in the band it’s awesome because these guys show up in jeans and a T-shirt and just do what they do obituary rules 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘😊💀💀💀
Fun fact about Don is that he played drums for Andrew W.K. in the late 90's and early 00's
Love Obituary. Took it to a different level
Death metal artist are some of the most humble friendly people
I still remember the day my friend put on Obituary in like 1991. Been hooked ever since, seen these guys twice and cant wait to see em again.
To this day seeing obituary live was one of my greatest shows ever attending in my life. And I’ve been to about 150 shows

Good interview, John is one of the all time greats of the genre. 🔝🤘
You are right. Legendary voice in death metal. 🤟
My favorite dm vocalist. Great interview! Thank you for sharing it.
One of my top 3 favorite death metal vocalist, Obituary still kills it 30+ years later, a timeless band.
Thanks for sharing the interview with us. Best wishes to Obituary. Great band, love the discography. Solid new album.
You are welcome. He is like my 2nd favorite vocalist from death metal after Corpsegrinder so it was amazing to talk about this subject with him 🤟
@@chaoszine corpsegrinders on my list , too.
Great interview, as always 👍 🤘🤘
What a great dude! Love this band so much. Followed them since Cause of Death. That wasn't yesterday. I was the only kid in school listening to death metal. I was an anomaly.
Just saw these guys live and they were amazing. John vocals still so sick.
Great interview!
I often wonder " had it only been Obituary featured on Ace Ventura..."
Things would be different perhaps.
Perhaps not.
John is great frontman, Really likeable and down to earth guy. I have liked Obituary since the first album...
Been a fan sine slowly we rot. 48 now and still getting the same cool vibe when listening to Obituary.
John is a good guy with an instantly recognizable death metal voice.

I grew up listening to their music and still love it. Not many bands can maintain their style over years, but Obituary do it successfully! Thanks guys!
This band is so great. Dying of Everything is so catchy. Amazing to see them continuing on strong and staying relevant after so many years.
the opening track for the new album hits you like a punch 👊 in the face 🤘
Just saw Obituary with Sepultura twice and still there’s no band like Obituary. Absolutely crushing and great.
I have been lucky as hell to hang out with John and the rest of the band a couple times and Trevor a third time. They are beyond cool and humble and just fun to be around. Love them! 🖤🤘
I just love Obituary. I saw them in Ybor in support of Hatebreed. I left after their set a very happy person.
Cause of death has to be one of the most iconic albums in deathmetal ever! Greatest album of the 90s in new zealand.
I've seen Obituary live a few times (awesome) but this is one of the first times i've really seen his face cuz usually his really long hair is covering it haha. Good interview.
John is one of those rare expectations where his voice has gotten better with age. All the obituary dudes seem like the chillest people ever!
Love this guy. He's nice in person too. The whole band is
Very cool guy , I've only been fortunate enough to see them once, it was a goody, Sadus ,obituary, and sepultura, swallowed in black , cause of death , and beneath the remains ....killed.

I love his vocal skills.
Possibly THE best DM vocalist ever!

I saw them in 2008-ish for the first time in a rather small venue and man, what a show!
His voice is still great to this day I will be seeing them in Philly next month already got tickets. I never miss when they come around.
This is an excellent interview! All the questions are great, thanks for posting!

John you're an absolute LEGEND brother 🔥🤘
Met the band about a year ago in Philly at a Meet n Greet before their show. THE COOLEST, MOST down to earth people I ever met!!!
John you are awesome seen you many times never disappoints. Your brother is one of my favorite drummers.
Obituary is the coolest band in metal. Met them all and they are so easy to talk to and down to Earth. My favorite band!!!!
Seems like a totally down to earth guy. I was already a longtime metal fan and the second Obituary album was one of my first introductions to death metal, along with Deicide and Morbid Angel's second records. Still dig that stuff.
Can’t wait to see you guys headline in Salt Lake City. Your energy is amazing. Never miss a show when you’re in SLC...

Very unique vocalist! Got he’s own style that you know it’s Obituary🔪
Saw them over 30 years ago for the first time and about 20 times since. As good today as way back then

Congrats from Brazil!! Great John!
I was very grateful to grow up in a place where I can go see obituary all the time. I was a little 13 year old West Palm Beach kid.
No one could ever replace him
One in a million
Such a chill dude.
I like the interviewers questions.
Great interview!
definately -our mouths open, when we first heard "slowly we rot" way back in 1989. john's voice is the ultimate death metal voice for me.

...one of the best live shows I've ever seen, Trevor had the flu and didn't sing but they managed to kill it, just amazing live, idk who filled in.
Best death metal vocalist ever, bar none.
OBITUARY I'm Lovin'it
Fun vocalist......fun guy.....Fun band. OBI numero uno.....en mi vida diaria....🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I love you, John!

Hard to imagine when he is talking normally he possesses an unreal grunt
Slowly we rot is still such a great album.
They Rule ! One of the most distinctive and sickest Deathmetal voice’s still
John Tardy is maybe the most articulate dude I ever listened, I always understand perfectly what he says, I wonder if it has to do with where he comes from, etc
Could be of course. But I guess its more the style. 🤔
