God used the Gospel of John movie to draw me to Himself. I can't believe it. In 2013 my parents were watching the movie and I walked through the room and heard one verse, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him." It scared the daylights out of me and made me realize I didn't know what the Bible said. Three days later, I watched the DVD myself and God brought me to repentance and faith in Him.

I am saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. The bittersweet part of watching this movie now is my father did not choose Jesus Christ as his Savior.
And also "Flywheel" by the Kendrick Brothers. About a corrupt auto salesman who didnt have time to spend with his kid and rip off his customers until one day he became converted through the gospel preached, he sought forgiveness and try to make it right with the customers he ripped off and also paid off or canceled the car debt balance that a single mother with kid undergoing financial hardship didn't expect and was grateful. He transformed his auto business. One of his co workers chose to quit on him and join other car dealership that continues to rip off people. He would not give up and close to the end the customers rallied and gave him support because he was honest. He started having more time with his kid. What a movie. Flywheel is a must-see!!! Moving.
I like Flywheel too. Then again, I love all the Kendrick Brothers movies, especially Facing The Giants. I like the hoky old David White movies too. And the Jefferson Moore movies. 🤔
There is one I like called "Tortured for Christ." It is about a preacher, Richard Wurmbrand, in Romania that was imprisoned and tortured because he would not denounce Christ. Very moving.
Maybe no one out there is old enough to remember "King of Kings" with Jeffrey Hunter. I took the bus downtown to the theater to see it, as a 16 yr.old in 1962? Changed my life. Those old sunday school lessons came alive. Eventually sent me to study the Bible. I found the King of Kings!
As a child and teen, I watched the movie "King of Kings" every year when it was broadcasted on TV around Easter, then heard the Gospel from college dorm mates in 1974. Praise God that He used that movie and others to put a longing in my heart to know and trust Him and His Son, Jesus, unto eternal life!

I should add Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ' to this litany of edifying films. I am no Roman Catholic and furthermore I found the film brutal to watch. I have viewed the film twice, with a very necessary several year break between the first and second viewing. Yet, there has been no film I have ever watched that has quite brought home to me the absolute horror that the Christ endured, for the salvation of my underserving soul.
@@accousticdecay For the most part it is a beautifully done film, well-acted by the principles, with a haunting film score. The characters are talking in Aramaic, the language of Jesus, with English sub-titles to give it authenticity while being intelligible. The worst part of the film was when Jesus was being 'scourged' ie. whipped with a cat-o-nine-tails which literally ripped the flesh from His body. It was pretty horrific to watch. One could fast forward through that scene, and they would not really miss any meaning of the film.
I loved pretty much your whole list but The Passion of the Christ is in my Top slots because watching this depiction had me repenting and crying in the movie I forgot it wasn’t in English. Also, the portrayal of the suffering of Mary as she witnessed her son be crucified was unfathomable. Lastly, when the stone rolled away and Christ had holes in his hands…. Sent chills through my spine. Come Lord Jesus Come

I would also add The Prince of Egypt and Joseph: King of Dreams to the list (both made by Dreamworks). The latter I think is very underrated personally. The ending scene to Joseph: King of Dreams is really powerful and emotional.
In my opinion you missed "The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry." I too loved the Luther movie. Timechangers surprised me, the story was pretty good as was the acting, I recommended it to my neighbor. A nice list, Todd.
You ought to see Flywheel also. Great message!! Also I love the part in Fireproof where the wife finds out that it is actually her husband who paid for her mom’s hospital bed!!!!!
It’s not a movie but the animated series called the torchlighters is a really good series. It tells the stories of believers over the centuries and they actually did an episode on Martin Luther and John newton. There made by the organization the voice of martyrs.
When my husband and I left the theater afterwards, I needed to go sit on a bench by myself where I had a good cry. Loved this movie. A quote from an older book I read, “Once we have left this life, we will never have another chance to suffer for Christ.” The early church (the book of Acts!) sure did. We may still be given a chance in our current culture.
Documentary called Tortured for Christ was solid. Free on UA-cam too… and also another documentary series many have likely heard of called American Gospel
I really enjoyed Paul, Apostle of Christ with James Faulkner. It chronicles the ministry of Paul from when he persecuted Christians to his conversion to Christianity, to his imprisonment, to his martyrdom. And it is quite a powerful film, in my opinion.
I enjoyed that recent movie version of the story of the Apostle Paul. Years ago, I also enjoyed the TV miniseries "Peter and Paul" with Robert Foxworth and? I can't think of the actor's name right now.
Thank you so much for putting together this list I am enjoying watching all of these! The Ten Boom story is such a strong example of what living for Jesus should look like!
To me, the best depiction of Jesus and the gospels was in the miniseries "Jesus Of Nazareth" (1977). This miniseries stuck very closely to the material in the Bible, depicting many of the events mentioned in the gospels.
Although there have been actors since that I believe look more like a Jewish man of that era than Robert Powell did, I will say Powell nailed the delivery in so many scenes. Especially when he rebuked the Pharisees! Such a powerful scene!
Bruce Marchiano when play Jesus always smile.. my favorite is The Encounter Movie - A road closure leads five strangers to a remote wayside eatery shop. There, they encounter with the diner's owner, who happens to know about them and claims to be Jesus.
@Placeholder Username 2195 the movie is good, but not nearly as good as the book. My children had read pilgrims progress multiple times, and they enjoyed the movie as well.
I haven't seen a "good" version of that book put to screen, the few I've seen had bad acting and poor production quality. But if you have please tell us how to find it.
The Robe...1963. Had a deep impact on me as a child. Richard Burton testimony before Caligula on The Kingdom was piercing oratory. He went from murderer of Christ as a Roman, to a Martyr for Christ. Victor Mature was his converted slave. Scenes of early church life/love, baffle Marcellus.
I'm glad to see The Nativity Story up near the top. I never went to see it in theatres because I find most "Christian" films lacking. Most have a heaping helping of cheese. However, one Christmas four years ago, I gave in and watched it. I absolutely loved it!!! It really made you realize just what Joseph must have gone through. No cheese, just great acting. I noted with interest your omission of The Passion of the Christ. I have a love/hate relationship with that film. While I find it excellent in some respects, and especially love that it was an attempt to be ultra accurate, even down to Mel wanting it to be in the original language with subtitles (which I would have loved), I find I cannot go back and watch the entire film over again because of the violence, and the film puts too much emphasis on the physical suffering of Christ, without the context of what it meant. My last comment is about Fireproof. Let me first state that I have massive respect and admiration for Kirk Cameron and his sister. I love them, but honestly, this was one of those Christian films with far too much cheese. You can see it in the clip you showed. The acting, the dialog, the cinematography....? Not sure which is responsible... Maybe a bit of all of it, I am not sure, but the end result doesn't feel natural. It feels forced and cheesy.... Like it's trying too hard. Pretty good list. I think I will revisit Ben Hur. While I don't feel like an actor portraying Christ is breaking the second commandment, I do agree that there is a certain power in the director not showing the face of Christ. It really makes that scene. That's my thoughts. Happy New Year everyone!!!
I would add “Risen” to the list. It is fiction, Joseph Fiennes plays a Roman official who chooses to follow Christ after his resurrection. Quite a bit of theatrical license, but a very good film and well acted.
Another movie I would highly suggest is "End Of The Spear" put out by Every Tribe Entertainment. It's based on a book by the same name by Steve Saint, son of one of the five missionaries killed by the Waodaini (Auca) tribe in 1956. Jim Elliot, probably the more prominent missionary from the book "Through Gates of Splendor," was one of them.
For anyone who was a fan of Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments, I'd also highly recommend Samson and Delilah (1949) and Quo Vadis (1951). Surprisingly enough, before superheroes became such a big thing, Hollywood was very much into adapting the Bible and Christian novels, as weird as it may seem today.
good recommendations .... Quo Vadis (very long) but saw it as a kid (in school?) and some of those images never left me. have it now on dvd (as well as the other two you mentioned)
Yes, they used to do some great Biblical movies. I always liked "Samson and Delilah", David and Bathsheba. There were also movies about Ruth and Boaz, and Solomon (with Yul Brenner). Not sure of all the exact names of the movies. I saw "The Robe" maybe once, but remember it being good. Love "Quo Vadis" and have seen it several times.
Me, too!! I know what he's going to say because I've seen the movie many times. But, being transported to that moment, and hearing Jesus say it, is so powerful, my goosebumps get goosebumps!
For something current, I would recommend "I Heard the Bells" which was released December 1 and tells the story of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's life and inspiration for the well-known poem. Very inspirational - and the first movie production by "Sight and Sound" based in Lancaster, PA.
@@eileenniehaus5368 I'm not affiliated with Sight and Sound, but know they currently they sell an annual pass that includes that movie as a streaming selection.
Love and appreciate your new bolder format - comments turned on and everything! Will be tuning in more often, and as always, thank you for the “good stuff”. God bless
I am shocked you didn’t pick Passion of the Christ in your top 10 Edit: I didn't know it was Catholic. I watched it when I was teenager in a protestant church. It was memorable to me because it brought to tears over the brutality Jesus endured. It made appreciate the gospel even more. Really!
There’s a video on UA-cam called, “C.H. Spurgeon: The people’s preacher” by Vision Video. It’s a docudrama a little over an hour long but was really well done.
The movie "Joseph" (1995) is the best and most accurate movie adaptation of the story of Joseph and his brothers. A beautiful movie from start to finish, highly recommend it.
Love The Gospel of John...'I tell you the truth!' Henry Ian Cusack did a great job, but also Scott Handy as John the Baptist...'Make a straight path for the Lord to travel!!' Total defiance in the face of the Pharisees. Great film.
Dear Brother Wretch! Spot on with # 1's!!! Anytime someone asks me to recommend a movie about Christianity, I pick one of those two, if not both of them. As a family, we've been watching them for years and I have used them to personally evangelize many people who wouldn't listen to me, until after seeing them. Powerful tools! Keep up the great Kingdom work. Merry CHRISTmas! Love ya bro! >
I love the two movies with Charlton Heston. Beautiful epic productions. I also loved "Fireproof", a great movie. Another movie I have always loved that was not mentioned--Quo Vadis (also a novel).
9:35 I tried to Google "Timechangers," and the only result I could find was "Time Changer" (singular) from 2002. I have an interesting connection to that film. My mother was a private piano tutor, and among her students were the co-producers children.
The most obvious and surprising omissions from this top 10 list of best Christian movies are Franco Zeffirelli’s phenomenal miniseries Jesus of Nazareth (which totally OWNS The Chosen, by the way!) and The Passion of the Christ, but The Robe should definitely be on here too. I would also add Courageous, which is still the best-made Kendrick Brothers film, and October Baby, which is also excellent. Another often overlooked and underrated movie about Christ is a brilliant animated film from 2000 titled The Miracle Maker. No joke, I’ve yet to see a more scripturally/historically accurate visual portrayal of Christ. It’s truly a *masterpiece*!
C’Mon, man! Your list is excellent, but mentioning October baby in the same breath as the others causes you to lose credibility. October Baby is a convoluted mess with only a fair prolife message.
"A Hidden Life" the story of Franz Jagerhutter. Martyr. "Bonhoeffer" ( 2003 ) I cannot quite handle portrayals of Jesus, as in "The Gospel of John" or "The Visual Bible". It's impossible for any actor even with modern film techniques to capture His essence, as sincerely as it may be attempted. It is always less than the reality. Awkward. But I will concede that they have a place. And, how about Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ"? Stunning. Profound.
As for myself, I try to avoid watching movies that have a member of sinful mankind portraying my sinless and holy Savior, or movies that try to portray God Himself in a frivolous manner. They may be produced with good intentions, and they may be of very high quality, but I have been guilty of watching them in the past. And I must confess that I have broken the second commandment many times, ironically offending the God who died for me. Father forgive me, for I knew not what I was doing.
We share all time favorites in Amazing Grace, The Hiding Place, Luther, Time Changer, The Nativity Story and Fireproof (for me really ANY movie by the Kendrick brothers). But my list also has to include the 4 hour film Jesus of Nazareth.
There is also The Visual Bible of Acts that's pretty great too with Dean Jones as Luke narrator. And I also enjoy Dean Jones in St. John on Exile one man show. Paul Apostle of Christ, Passion of Christ, Case for Christ, Pilgrim's Progress (animated), The Robe, David and Bathsheba, and most of The Bible Collection (especially Jeremiah) all pretty fantastic as well.
Todd. Explain to me how you can commend Ben-Hur for not making a graven image but put these portrayals of Christ as your top picks? I’ve seen all these movies for the most part but in my growth have stopped due to considering any portrayal of Christ is something I shouldn’t watch because the man in that box isn’t my Christ. Thank you

To me, the best depiction of Jesus and the gospels was in the miniseries "Jesus Of Nazareth" (1977). This miniseries stuck very closely to the material in the Bible, depicting many of the events mentioned in the gospels.
My all time favorite!!!! Best one ever in my opinion!! Amen!!
Although there have been actors since that I believe look more like a Jewish man of that era than Robert Powell did, I will say Powell nailed the delivery in so many scenes. Especially when he rebuked the Pharisees! Such a powerful scene!
Was that the one with the kids?
I agree! By far my favorite portrayal of Jesus...and the whole miniseries was very well done.
The best!!!
Bruce Marchiano when play Jesus always smile.. my favorite is The Encounter Movie - A road closure leads five strangers to a remote wayside eatery shop. There, they encounter with the diner's owner, who happens to know about them and claims to be Jesus.
The movies with Jefferson Moore playing Jesus that are based on the David Gregory books are great also.
The series was wonderful, too.
That must be a good list. But i was also expecting "Chariots of Fire"
That movie breaks me whenever I see it! The story behind the movie is really much more compelling, the individual lives.
One of my favorite movies is Hacksaw Ridge. Every single time it brings me to tears and moves me in a beautiful way.
We'll have to check that one out. Andrew Garfield, right?
- Ethan from Wretched
I stood on that Ridge 55 years after the actual event.
Great movie
Hacksaw Ridge flip yeah
This is my 15 yr old daughter's olds favorite movie!
I love The Case For Christ! I would certainly add that to this list. And Bruce Marchiano always plays such a likable Jesus!
Thank you Wretched team!
I can’t believe “The Pilgrim’s Progress” was not mentioned!
Didn't know there was a movie but the book did it for me. The version with the wife's story added on.
The book is amazing but I'm told the movie is only mid.
My 8 yr old loves the Pilgrim's progress, we watch the movie / read the book almost every night.
Shalom and blessings Todd. Oh the irony of following the 'Hiding Place' with 'Luther'
"The Robe" (1953) and maybe its sequel "Demetrius and the Gladiators" would be two other good choices.
One of my faves for sure. I’ve watched it a few times.
I remember they used to run the ten commandments every year on network cable around Resurrection Sunday. Now, good luck with that.
The Ten Commandments, shown because of Passover. Ben-Hur is much more for Easter!!
I would add “Risen” to the list. It is fiction, Joseph Fiennes plays a Roman official who chooses to follow Christ after his resurrection. Quite a bit of theatrical license, but a very good film and well acted.
I really enjoyed Risen (2016) starring Joseph Fiennes.
I have heard good things about that
Yes.. It's a really good movie. Enjoyed it
@@1overcomer333yesss
@@1overcomer333 totally agree! It’s chilling!
@@1overcomer333 My favorite scene was the last one of Jesus rising up to Heaven. Gives me heart palpitations every time. It's so majestic.
Play the flute and the case for Christ are some of the favorites
For anyone who was a fan of Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments, I'd also highly recommend Samson and Delilah (1949) and Quo Vadis (1951). Surprisingly enough, before superheroes became such a big thing, Hollywood was very much into adapting the Bible and Christian novels, as weird as it may seem today.
.....The Robe too
good recommendations .... Quo Vadis (very long) but saw it as a kid (in school?) and some of those images never left me. have it now on dvd (as well as the other two you mentioned)
@@sadiqsuleiman1480 And it's sequel Demetrius and the Gladiators
Yes, they used to do some great Biblical movies. I always liked "Samson and Delilah", David and Bathsheba. There were also movies about Ruth and Boaz, and Solomon (with Yul Brenner). Not sure of all the exact names of the movies. I saw "The Robe" maybe once, but remember it being good.
Love "Quo Vadis" and have seen it several times.
I have seen most of these and do also like them. I always get goose bumps when Jesus said before Abraham was I Am...
Me, too!! I know what he's going to say because I've seen the movie many times. But, being transported to that moment, and hearing Jesus say it, is so powerful, my goosebumps get goosebumps!
I just loove fireproof. It's a great story about forgiveness and love. Watched it already 10 times.
For something current, I would recommend "I Heard the Bells" which was released December 1 and tells the story of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's life and inspiration for the well-known poem. Very inspirational - and the first movie production by "Sight and Sound" based in Lancaster, PA.
Sight and Sound in Ronks PA is a once in a lifetime experience and worth putting on your bucket list. JESUS in 2019 was sensational!
Read the poem aloud,extraordinary.
I totally agree! I watched this one for my birthday and loved it!
Would love to see I Heard the Bells but still no dvd. Limited release stuff doesn’t make it to my area. 🙁
@@eileenniehaus5368 I'm not affiliated with Sight and Sound, but know they currently they sell an annual pass that includes that movie as a streaming selection.
Great suggestions!
I also enjoyed The End of the Spear, courageous, and Facing the Giants.
Facing the Giants is my #1
Love and appreciate your new bolder format - comments turned on and everything! Will be tuning in more often, and as always, thank you for the “good stuff”. God bless
I am shocked you didn’t pick Passion of the Christ in your top 10
Edit: I didn't know it was Catholic. I watched it when I was teenager in a protestant church. It was memorable to me because it brought to tears over the brutality Jesus endured. It made appreciate the gospel even more. Really!
Because it's a catholic movie
Do you expect an anti-catholic channel to pick a movie made by a catholic movie director in their list.
Catholic pagan homosexual church of Satan
Regardless, it’s a great great film..
It was fantasy. Catholic mythology. Anti-biblical.
The book of acts was an excellent movie, word to word...3 plus hours I had my Bible open the entire time.
I’d love a movie on Spurgeon!
There’s a video on UA-cam called, “C.H. Spurgeon: The people’s preacher” by Vision Video. It’s a docudrama a little over an hour long but was really well done.
@@shrewdthewise2840 i watched it it was great
There is one
I have a nice list of movies to watch this winter. Thanks!
The movie "Joseph" (1995) is the best and most accurate movie adaptation of the story of Joseph and his brothers. A beautiful movie from start to finish, highly recommend it.
Agreed. I have watched that plenty of times.
Agree
Yes I was about to mention that one! The Abraham, Jacob, and Moses movies were also good as well.
Moses and joseph are my top 2 favorites of all time.
I grew up with "Jesus of Nazareth". Saw it on the history channel and had to get it. A lot of great actors of the time!
The Passion of The Christ, prince of Egypt, and dreamworks Joseph are also very good, as well as Risen
Thank you Wretched finally I can watch the movie with my family again.
Do You Believe is my favorite Christian movie. I recommend this to anyone looking for a solid Christian movie with great acting and plot!
Love The Gospel of John...'I tell you the truth!' Henry Ian Cusack did a great job, but also Scott Handy as John the Baptist...'Make a straight path for the Lord to travel!!' Total defiance in the face of the Pharisees. Great film.
I make it a point to watch Jesus of Nazareth at least once a year. It’s a marvelous three-part film that keeps me captivated with Christ in mind.
Thanks Peter!!
- Ethan from Wretched
I love the two movies with Charlton Heston. Beautiful epic productions. I also loved "Fireproof", a great movie. Another movie I have always loved that was not mentioned--Quo Vadis (also a novel).
Play the Flute is something I have to give as gifts whenever possible. Very moving!!
9:35 I tried to Google "Timechangers," and the only result I could find was "Time Changer" (singular) from 2002. I have an interesting connection to that film. My mother was a private piano tutor, and among her students were the co-producers children.
Time Changer is good. I have DVD.
I think it's on Tubi. It has Gavin McLeod
Yes, Jesus of Nazareth is a great one! Thanks for the reminder!
I love The Robe
C’Mon, man! Your list is excellent, but mentioning October baby in the same breath as the others causes you to lose credibility. October Baby is a convoluted mess with only a fair prolife message.
'The Least of These' about the Staines family's ministry in India. Made in India, written by Australian Andrew Matthews.
Very powerful.
For another old (but much less known) classic, I really like Barabbas.
"Greatest Story Ever Told" is a good one
End of the Spear was great.
Chariots of Fire. That was always a favorite of mine. It would be in my Top 10.
What about "The Passion"!!! That's a GREAT movie!!!
'The Hiding Place' has a sequel, 'Return to The Hiding Place', it is also a great movie.
The excellent book PEACE CHILD by Don Richardson should be put to film!
Thanks Todd
A hidden life is a masterpiece
you forgot my #1 fav Christian film: *THE CASE FOR CHRIST* (story of Lee Strobel) ... if you haven't seen it yet, its a MUST SEE!
“Secrets of Jonathan Sperry” probably my favorite Christian movie.
Me too!!!!!
I bought that on cd when my son was about the age of those boys. It was an excellent movie and my son still loves it as an adult.
Yes, I loved it ! I listed 3 movies. ⚘💕
We share all time favorites in Amazing Grace, The Hiding Place, Luther, Time Changer, The Nativity Story and Fireproof (for me really ANY movie by the Kendrick brothers). But my list also has to include the 4 hour film Jesus of Nazareth.
Oh thank you for this list.
The passion of the Christ by far is number 1
Wonderful! Thank you. I haven't seen some of these I think. Now.....where's my popcorn? 🍿
I Heard the Bells (2022)
Risen (2016)
A movie called Heavens War. A depiction of the battle of good and evil over each human soul. Edge of your seat.
2014 The Gospel of John directed by David Batty. This team also released The Gospel of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Narrated living Bible, beautiful.
Thank you
