Ah Projared isn't playing with the narrator on. Well I guess I'll just have to say it. "Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer."
This game is always what I imagined playing a DnD campaign, where the DM is super into the diseases and insanity part of the handbook, would look like. Fun for a bit and then instantly painful.
Not only that, many other objects have similar things you can use on them. Observe what happens to your guys. For example: you use a thing, your guy gets cursed. next time use holy water on it. You get poisoned? use antidote. I think you can use bandages on sticky trees or sth like that too. You always get some extra stuff.
Interesting. I noticed that sometimes I could carry more gold, but never realized it was because of that particular class. I personally just liked the Antiquarian as a support (even had one in my party against the final boss which I just did today) who can do a little bit of everything I need from a defensive support. Not as powerful a healer as the Vestal, but makes up for it by making the party harder to hit by being able to both raise the party's evasion, and lower the enemy's accuracy. And if I need some damage, she can inflict Blight while also lowering Blight resistance. Also like pairing her with a Man-at-Arms for massive evasion gains, plus added riposte coverage (also working with the Highwayman) by ordering party members to protect her. Lastly, she gets some great class-only trinkets. However, I never once used her skill that causes her to move back while raising her own evasion, although I could see the use of it for dealing with enemies that use lots of move skills to keep your party in formation. Not an incredible class by any means, but I liked to always have at least one at the ready in case I had a party that needed some extra protection against damage without the need for healing, especially since healing is usually rather weak and can take a couple casts just to sometimes recover from a single hit. Either way though, I just found her fun to use.
I'm really digging the art in this game! It's really reminiscent of the works of Mike Mignola! Hell, even the highwayman class kinda looks like Lord Baltimore.
Enjoying the pilot episode of this series so far. I love this game and you're doing pretty well already. Just a few quality-of-life tips for you to improve your experience: -----Yes, Antiquarians are weak, but they provide a number of benefits: Examining curio with Antiquarians grants you additional loot, and increases he amount of gold you can carry in the dungeon. For example, you normally can only carry 1500 gold per inventory slot, but each Antiquarian in your party increases that limit by 500 gold. -----When examining curio, you can drag provision items on the window to try different interactions. For example, using Skeleton Keys on chests grants you additional loot. -When you come near to a trap (do still be careful when approaching them though) little spider web-looking icons will pop above your characters' health bars. Mouse over them to see how good each character is at disarming traps. -----When obtaining loot from fights or curio, you can use consumable items from the rewards, if you need them, by right-clicking on them instead of tossing them away. For example, you could have used that Torch you didn't really need at the end of the second dungeon. In that particular case it would not have mattered, but just so you know.
Yes! Wasn't expecting this, but all for watching this all the way through. Also you can use the items on the curios, such as the keys on chests; however some combinations aren't good ideas.
Ah, you've finally answered the letter, Jared. Well, welcome to pain, suffering and, of course, the "Oh, come on! What were the chances of that happening?". Remember to poke big red glowy orbs with torches whenever you see them. It's a tradition around these parts.
Matt Smith This is the first comment I have read about someone disliking Sam. Don't get me wrong, there's probably more, as I never expand the comments further than the first ones shown, but I still don't think, that some people disliking him is any reason to get rid of him. It's ultimately Jared's call and he doesn't seem to mind, or else the comments would've stopped quite a while ago.
The Doctor Actually, not sure if Jared told him too or not, but he has toned down the comments. Some of those Zelda videos are essentially visual novels (hyperbole to prove a point, I know it wasn't that bad) Maybe I should have chosen my words more carefully, we don't need to get rid of him, but his unfunny, repetitive comments get really old, really quick
I especially love the HP Lovecraft themes. Your relative excavated something that should have remained buried, and his mansion became the epicenter for an eldritch curse. Before he went the way of Curt Cobain, he wrote this in his will: "I beg you, return home, claim your birthright and deliver our family... from the ravenous clutching shadows... ... of the Darkest Dungeon."
This is the first ProJared Plays video I've seen, cuz I heckin' love Darkest Dungeon. I'm really enjoying the informed commentary and funny edits! They add a lot of pizzazz and personality
Really liked these series. Actually I just started playing Darkest dungeon after watching your 3 videos. Keep it up the great work, not only is entertaining but also helps me finding new games.
Dude, antiquarians are very important. They are weak fighters, but when they search curios they get extra rewards. They also allow for gold to stack to larger amounts. Bringing an antiquarian on a run trades the combat liability for extra currency rewards. They are key for building up your hamlet and characters.
OH MY GOD, HE'S PLAYING DARKEST DUNGEON!!! THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE GAMES!!! (except of the weald... fuck the weald... And the hag) Edit: yeah, many people have said this, but managing your team order and setup is critical. Make sure you have someone designated to each spot, or groups of people that can exchange spots. Only want the best for you. Oh, yeah, remember how I was talking about the Weald? USE A PLAGUE DOCTOR THERE!!! Trust me, that place is the worst without a dedicated blight/bleed and disease healer, and the heal of 1 means that you can keep your party out of death's door Edit v2: I love the edits on the characters. I know how much time it takes, but it's awesome. Final Edit(sorry, I just think of these things): Most of the people watching this are gonna be people that love this game, since it does have a bit of a cult following. Just so you know, The comments are gonna be a bit dodgy for this series, since it'll be helpful, but can also get prickly from the anger everyone gets when a youtuber makes a mistakes in a game. Just warning you.
Use the antiquarian. You get to be able to hold more treasure and you also find more treasure. It's also always good to have your party maxed out because you can just fire people any time so you literally don't lose anything by making sure your roster is full.
And bring more friggen shovels!. At least 2 for a small, 3 for a medium and 4 for a large. This is the lowest number of shovels I would recommend. You could bring 3 for a short as well, just to be safe. More torches and food wouldn't hurt either. When camping on medium and long missions, you will always want to feast when you camp and still be able to withstand 3 food activations. Some extra food for healing out of combat is important as well. The number of bandages and anti-venoms you bring depends on the area you are in and your parties abilities.
If you're curious, there's a pretty cool mod for this game called Pitch Black Dungeon. It changes a bunch of stuff and adds monster modifiers and some other cool stuff. If you want to see it in action, Baertaffy is doing a LP of it right now.
Jared to make it easier in the future, on the map screen in dungeons there is an icon in the top right of the map section that when clicked it resets the party to it's original character positions.
there's a button specifically for resetting your party order to the way it was at the start of the expedition, it's the bottom most of the two buttons on the map screen
Holy shit you actually made your facecam slot semi transparent when there was something going on in the corner. Jared once again proves why he's one of the best channels.
Jared! Might be a little late to say, but the Antiquarian is there basically to farm gold! If you put them in the back of the team they can give basic buffs and small heals, as well as some useful debuffs to the enemy team. But the other thing they do is find a LOT more gold and items. They dig antiques out of everywhere. You wind up getting so much more money for basically a harder run.
the Antiquarian is a highly useful mercantile hero who boosts a number of unique properties than can help a party earn gold on an adventure: - Firstly she increases the amount of gold you can carry in a stack from 1500 to 2000. Every subsequent Antiquarian will further increase it by another 500 (for a theoretical maximum of 3500 with a full Antiquarian party). -Secondly is that she causes unique loot to drop. These are Minor Antiques, which are worth 275 gold each and stack to 20, and Rare Antiques which are worth 1000 each and stack to 5. Antiques will only be looted if the Antiquarian interacts with the curio. Rare Antiques, being more expensive than their minor counterparts, are less likely to be dropped or looted. The exact ratio is 1:6 -Darkest Dungeon Gamepedia: Antiquarian Tho due the lenght of the game and looking back to history I doubt we will see or reach The Darkest Dungeon.
BTW, when it says a name above a specific party, it doesn't do anything. It's just cosmetic and is made to just look cool. Also, look up a Curio Guide. It shows what each curio can be cured with, allowing you to get the most out of the curios you come across. PS: Antiquarian is only useful for looting. She can produce trinkets while camping, she can make you gold stack to 2,000 instead of 1,500, and when she interacts with certain curios, she can find Common and Rare Antiques, which can stack a lot, which results in a lot of money.
No kidding I just tried this game today and thought "this would be a good ProJared Let's Play...any game that breaks his sanity is always a great watch!" ...good luck ProJared!
I hope that you may or may not have invested in some simplicity mods, like faster combat animations and instant backtracking through explored terrain (So you don't have to walk back all the way from an end tunnel). Sounds like this'll be fun! Edit: Also, AoE attacks are usually your worst choice. They may seem appealing, but 4 enemies at half HP are all hitting you, while 3 at full is one less attacker. Plus, later on a lot of enemies combo spells/heals/protection, so you really want to focus to take out singular targets. Also, I'm a guy who got muted on your Twitch for backseat gaming, so ignore me I guess. Edit, edit: You can press W to interact with doors/curios/etc, which can make things a bit less "clicky".
I like how you mention you got muted for backseating, then proceed to backseat some more, and even pull out the extremely aggravating passive-aggresivism that is so very distinct to you awkward basement dwellers. Let ppl do whatever the f they want with their games, how bout it?
ilikepie9161 im all aboard for that - when the person wants to have that information. If they specifically ask NOT to, then its disrespectful to try and push what YOU think is more practical and fun. Some people, like jared and myself, like to figure stuff out ourselves. Its part of what makes games fun for us.
I agree about the AoE attacks, but also can't blame Jared for using them so much. I loved them as well early on, but then gradually realized their limitations the more I played. After a while, only really using them if it meant a guaranteed kill on at least one target (be it the damage, or upcoming Bleed/Blight), or to clear out piling up corpses for units like the Crusader and Leper who have limited reach. Of course, this excludes AoE skills that inflict status effects, or debuffs.
Antiquarians have a passive of finding sellable items on any expedition they are part of. You can either find 275g antiques, or 1000g rare antiques. They are extremely, extremely useful *edit* these antiques can be stacked, and they don't have an upper limit on how much you can stack them, I once had the standard antiques stacked up to over 10
Thank you ProJared for showing me a cool new game to play. I just bought it, and I'm having a ton of fun playing it! I look forward to seeing how you play the game. :D
This is just because I'm super cautious after losing so many party members, but holy hot damn your lack of torches on that first run was freaking me out XD I was just waiting for death's door, so bravo on staving that off. Looking forward to more, I love this game.
Jared please listen! If you like games like this- Name characters with unique traits, slowly increasing difficulty in a survival setting where your characters get stressed, sometimes act on their own, and can die at any minute- then TRY RIMWORLD. That game is incredible.
OH MY GOSH YES!!!! I am so excited for this series!! Hyyyype! :D If I may make 1 request though.. This isn't meant in a rude way, but please do your research Jared! There's a lot of the game that is not fully explained, check a guide or two so you have a good idea how to start off, otherwise you just cripple yourself later on! Can't wait to watch this series!! :D Keep up the great work!
Oof, Jared is probably already well into this but I'll say a few things for flavor anyway. Grape Shot sucks unless it's to finish off weak foes, it's less accurate, maybe equal damage spread out, and probably also less crit. Deeeefinitely remove that awful Kleptomania as soon as the ward opens. Antiquarians RULE. They are a bit weak, no doubt, but they are all about that loot! Gold stacks can be bigger, they find antiques that usually trump gems, and can produce trinkets. Their skills in battle can actually be solid though too once you understand them, especially the party dodge % boost. Don't do darkness runs. Just don't. It's not worth it. You can risk some sometimes, but to do a whole dungeon in the dark is asking for the huge amount of stress and barely surviving that you got.
Darkest Dungeon is always a favorite for me playing and watching wise so I hope to see that you'll be able to beat the game! If not then just seeing you LPing it makes me happy! :D
Just had a postmortem on the game from the Lead Designer at my college the other night. He was really casual and it was really cool to get to hear his side of it. Plus I got to talk to him about adding my Journal to the game from backing the Kickstarter! I hope you can find some of its pages although it is an extremely rare drop! :D
The antiquarian, in case you don't already know, gathers extra money and trinkets from quests, and increases the amount of gold you can keep in a stack from 1500 to 2000.
Oh god, yes! Started to play this one myself few weeks ago, I have beaten first two bosses and also had one my parties wiped by another boss. Damn that Hag...
Nice! I think this is just h the thing after those Zelda runs! I have to ask, any chance of your viewers making it into the game? If so, I'd like to be a Hound Master named Frost Sempai!
Not sure if you know but you can use items on curios. Like holy water on altars for stress relief. I'll let you figure out the rest on your own, since that's the most fun.
When a character reached 100 stress, they have a chance of becoming a hero. This gives them a pretty good permanent trait, restores all of their stress, and buffs them. Don't count on it though, as the chance of this happening is tiny.
Although it's too late for me to say it, the Antiquarian nets you more money! (Random artifact drops that stack really high and money stacks higher [2000 not 1500 in the version Jared is playing]) She also has a good guard buff and clutch heals that are nice.
Scout runs tend to be pretty empty with few challenging fights... just wait until he comes across some of the bosses... THEN it gets fun... *Has that DM Grin of 'you just f*cked up'*
Quick class run down Crusader: Balanced frontline Leader, with no particular strengths or weaknesses the Crusader is an excellent general use Hero. Highwayman: Versatile Damage Dealer: Having both ranged and melee attacks ensures this Hero is always in range to inflict harm Vestal: Versatile Healer: Lighter on offence than other Heroes, the Vestals strength is in keeping her allies in good health Plague Doctor: backline Disruptor: With her bag of poisons the Plague Doctor can afflict the enemy with a variety of debuffs like Blight and Stun Arbalest: Focused backline Damage Dealer: This Hero excels at targeting and destroying specific enemies quickly Antiquarian: Out of Battle Support: While not much help in a fight, this Hero allows the Party to find more Treasure while in the Dungeon Man At Arms: Strong frontline Support: This fighter excels at keeping his allies safe from harm with a variety of Buffs and Counters Hellion: Furious frontline Damage Dealer: An all offence Hero, the Hellion is capable of inflicting large amounts of damageJester: Mixed Bag: A difficult Hero for sure, the Jester cam both harm his enemies or aid his allies, just be sure to watch his position I'll be sure to add more as Jared encounters them.
24:04 It was thanksgiving during the time of this video and thanksgiving on the time of my comment. I think they need to be fed right now 25 food each.
I'm sure you'll figure it out before you even read this (if you ever even do) the Antiquarian is a loot booster class. Use them to open chests and stuff to get bonus loot. Sucks for combat, but great for easy loot runs.
Good stuff Jared, but I hope you take more care into your party ordering, having the arbalist (crossbow/archer) as far back as possible for example, instead of the plague doctor. Also, point blank shot on yourself is awesome, as when out of combat you can move yourself to the front, then when in combat, take the shot (which moves you back and does hella damage) and be in your preferred position behind PBG.
And then, here i am, playing PITCH BLACK DUNGEON, without torches and looking at Jared... i have waaaaaay more thrill watching Jared's friends die than my own soldiers. xDDDDD
Ah Projared isn't playing with the narrator on. Well I guess I'll just have to say it. "Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer."
I kinda love the narrator, he really add a LOT of atmosphere for me :)
here i'll help. "Carelessness will find no clemency in this place!"
"These nightmarish creatures CAN be felled! They CAN be beaten!"
Victory. A hollow and meaningless notion
"A death by inches!"
This game is always what I imagined playing a DnD campaign, where the DM is super into the diseases and insanity part of the handbook, would look like. Fun for a bit and then instantly painful.
gamerfellow I
Well, at least you didn't get Mummy Rot... XD
Use the keys on the chests, even when you're not specifically asked to. You get extra loot.
Antiquarian gets extra money from interacting with things in a dungeon and allows you to carry more gold. It is used to earn money.
But it's pretty much useless for everything else
Demon: Yeah, but the dodge buff she can give everyone is still pretty neat.
I'm personally fond of "Protect Me!" Gives pretty rad protection and nullifies the concerns one might have about the class's glassy nature.
I never got that class on my playtroughts at all
Interesting. I noticed that sometimes I could carry more gold, but never realized it was because of that particular class. I personally just liked the Antiquarian as a support (even had one in my party against the final boss which I just did today) who can do a little bit of everything I need from a defensive support. I have to say, Sam's comments make everything better.
I'm not sure if I should believe you, you're unqualified to give advice
sam?
whos that
I enjoy them, though I do not find them funny. I find them endearing, instead? I don't know. I wouldn't hate it if he kept them OR removed them.
John Doe how old are you if I may ask?
John Doe I feel the same about em.
24:10... Projared: I'm hungry...
PBG: Dude we are in a dungeon and we just had a lunchbreak...
You named your characters after your friends and yourself? You shouldn't have done that...
Robert Sides he'll learn soon enough
When you start naming them, you start getting attached to them. Then you begin to act weird in the real world.
I made this mistake... I miss my friends
Ugh.... Dont remind me again the lost of my whole family in a single run...... I was the only survivor........ Sigh*
*****
nah XD but it was a bit disturbing to see a virtual me see the death of my family XD
I'm really digging the art in this game! It's really reminiscent of the works of Mike Mignola! Hell, even the highwayman class kinda looks like Lord Baltimore.
The One and Only Michael McCormick agreed, glad to see another mignola fan too.
7:10 No excuse! Surely Flintlocks were accurate from that range. Maybe his powder got wet...

Why? I enjoy Sam's comments.
The Doctor And a lot of people don't, as seen in the randomized zelda runs

Well, so long Jared's sanity, it has been a pleasure sir.
Doing well so far! I must recommend having a primary healer at all times though, and an antiquarian for her treasure boost when she opens curios.
Every time I see the attack "Graveyard Slash," the Monster Mash pops into my head.
This is the first ProJared Plays video I've seen, cuz I heckin' love Darkest Dungeon. I'm really enjoying the informed commentary and funny edits! They add a lot of pizzazz and personality

poor fellow
High darkness runs are rough, but so satisfying when you come out on top against the odds.
Really liked these series. Actually I just started playing Darkest dungeon after watching your 3 videos. Keep it up the great work, not only is entertaining but also helps me finding new games.

what genre would this game go under? like, action, adventure, horror?
Horror RPG.
Xifihas thanks. :)
Roguelike
Lovecraft's softcore buttfuck fest
turn based strategy, dungeon crawler, lovecraftian, roguelite I think
No kidding I just tried this game today and thought "this would be a good ProJared Let's Play...any game that breaks his sanity is always a great watch!" ...good luck ProJared!
I'm so happy you're playing this! This game is freaking awesome!
I think he picked it up because it is 40% off XD good ol' cheap Jared... Just ... like... meeeee :(
At that price it'll be worth every penny
Okay, I'll poke fun at Jared for declining the Antiquarian when he starts complaining about gold, lol XD

VinceInTheNorth Yea, how dare he try to tell projared about something that might make the game more enjoyable and fun!
;)
ilikepie9161 im all aboard for that - when the person wants to have that information.
Jared, I love this game and I love your commentary, I hope you will continue this series.
Antiquarians have a passive of finding sellable items on any expedition they are part of. You can either find 275g antiques, or 1000g rare antiques.
They are extremely, extremely useful
*edit* these antiques can be stacked, and they don't have an upper limit on how much you can stack them, I once had the standard antiques stacked up to over 10
Just letting you know Jared, you can click on the torch bar to use torches instead of clicking on torches in the inventory
why did you mute the narrator hes the best part of this game.
probably because of sam's involvement in editing in some snarky remarks
Thank you ProJared for showing me a cool new game to play. I just bought it, and I'm having a ton of fun playing it! I look forward to seeing how you play the game. :D
This is just because I'm super cautious after losing so many party members, but holy hot damn your lack of torches on that first run was freaking me out XD I was just waiting for death's door, so bravo on staving that off. Looking forward to more, I love this game.
Jared you can use the holy water on holy alters for damage buffs, also the keys can be used on chests to get more hierlooms items for town :D
Jared please listen! If you like games like this- Name characters with unique traits, slowly increasing difficulty in a survival setting where your characters get stressed, sometimes act on their own, and can die at any minute- then TRY RIMWORLD. That game is incredible.
B4TT3RY rimworld....... Fucking squirrels wiped out my whole colony....
B4TT3RY rimworld....... Fucking squirrels wiped out my whole colony....NEVER TRUST IN THOSE LITTLE BASTARDS......
looking forward to this series ALOT
Oh god yes. I fucking love this game so much Jared, it's the best thing Steam Early Access has given us.
RIP incredible narrator voice :(
Joshua Colquhoun Did the narrator pass away?
Projared's playing with the narrator voice turned off.
I'm so happy to see you playing this :) Good luck!
OH MY GOSH YES!!!! I am so excited for this series!! Hyyyype! :D
If I may make 1 request though.. This isn't meant in a rude way, but please do your research Jared! There's a lot of the game that is not fully explained, check a guide or two so you have a good idea how to start off, otherwise you just cripple yourself later on!
Can't wait to watch this series!! :D Keep up the great work!
...Nevermind! You seem to know what your doing haha! :D
Awesome video! I love Darkest Dungeon! This is gonna be an awesome series!
Maybe it's just because I get spooked by high risk, but I never keep light that low. It's interesting to see how others play this game
This will be perfect to get me motivated about getting back into the game, there have been so many new updates.
The antiquarian, in case you don't already know, gathers extra money and trinkets from quests, and increases the amount of gold you can keep in a stack from 1500 to 2000.
Keep playing please. I'm loving this.
Good luck to you Jared, beyond the difficulty of the game itself some of the community can be rather... spirited when voicing their help.
Oh god, yes! Started to play this one myself few weeks ago, I have beaten first two bosses and also had one my parties wiped by another boss. Damn that Hag...
Really glad to see you playing this game!!
I just got this game a couple days ago. Now I want to play it even more!
YES! This is an awesome game and I am glad you are playing it. I just hope it lasts a bit longer than most of your recent series ;)
Love this kind of content, Jared is always best when he is playing rpgs
Nice! I think this is just h the thing after those Zelda runs! I have to ask, any chance of your viewers making it into the game? If so, I'd like to be a Hound Master named Frost Sempai!
Alexander Frost I just want to be in :( but so do thousands of others
Not sure if you know but you can use items on curios. Like holy water on altars for stress relief. I'll let you figure out the rest on your own, since that's the most fun.
Oh my god, Jared... Use skeleton keys on chests! Extra loot over what you'd get normally.
Aww, but CommanderHolly would've made a great plague doctor!
AGREED!!! Plus, Plague Docs have to go through ALOT of dirty things... JUST LIKE STRIX!!!
also that was her costume on Table Flip :P
I love the speech bubbles!
I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH
My favorite youtuber playing my favorite RPG. keep up the awesome videos @ProJared Plays
(Random artifact drops that stack really high and money stacks higher [2000 not 1500 in the version Jared is playing])
She also has a good guard buff and clutch heals that are nice.
Cool game, looking forward to seeing more of it.
This game makes me feel like I am playing a theatre of the mind table top rpg while travelling a nightmarish version of the Oregon Trail.
"Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer."
I read "Dankest Dungeon"... Damn, those dank memes are really influencing...
Gonna need more of this!!!!
Hey, the home base music sounds a lot like Irene Adler theme in BBC Sherlock!
Love playing this game, but only in short bursts
Jared is actually doing surprisingly well. By this point I would have lost someone. Really though, what was up with that almost empty dungeon?
Scout runs tend to be pretty empty with few challenging fights... just wait until he comes across some of the bosses... THEN it gets fun... *Has that DM Grin of 'you just f*cked up'*
RNjeesus. that's what's up with it.
HELL YES JARED PLAYS DARKEST DUNGEON
I'm sure you'll figure it out before you even read this (if you ever even do) the Antiquarian is a loot booster class. Use them to open chests and stuff to get bonus loot. Sucks for combat, but great for easy loot runs.
Ooo this seems right up jared's alley. Nice pick Jared!
I love this game and the pvp dlc is coming soon! I am so pumped!

All I can do is suggest that you keep your items in mind while messing with the chests and curios.
Doing good Jared! enjoying this a lot!
I think there's a default party order button on one of the menus, so you don't have to manually switch them back every time you get surprised...
And then, here i am, playing PITCH BLACK DUNGEON, without torches and looking at Jared... i have waaaaaay more thrill watching Jared's friends die than my own soldiers. xDDDDD
You missed out on using your keys. Whenever you see an heirloom chest, you can use a key to get more loot.
