Hi CO. I remember when Stingers first rolled out. Man they were like something from Buck Rogers. Fancy blue box and 5 point hollow point, long plated case and light weight bullet. The damage they would do to a sealed can of Coke was unreal. I have been hoarding a box of Winchester Super X 26 gr. Tin HP in a red box. Rated at 1650 fps. I did open it but have never fired any. When I saw your rifle, I thought it was a Remi 541, but was quite amazed seeing an (apparently) Remi (steel?) 511 magazine inserted. Another great, informative video. Regrettably, I only have a few boxes of Yellow Jackets and Vipers on hand. Still waiting and hoping for a video on how you converted the Remington 511 magazines for use in the 581. Meanwhile, I located a fellow Tennessean, John Reed, in Maryville, TN who makes beautiful custom made stainless magazines for the 581. I ordered two but have not had a chance to try them out yet. Nice video. I tried most all the hpyer stuff back in the day. Yellow Jackets were the most accurate for me. Stingers and the rest were basically junk. I used to squirrel hunt a lot. My favorite squirrel ammo was the same thing I used for rifle matches, the Eley Tenex or Eley match with the flat EPS point. !/4" groups at 50 yards, and quiet, and the flat pointed bullets hits with a big thud, really works better that hollow points, even on body hits, but I strived for head shots only anyway. Enjoy your channel, you seem to enjoy rimfires as do I.

I'd buy *_that_* for a dollar! 😉 Always enjoy your relaxed comparative video presentations. 👊😏👍
Nice to see some vintage ammo! I should have gotten into.22,s a lot earlier in life but just wasn’t interested honestly. Lately I’m noticing how fun and varied they are. I’ve seen yellow jackets quite a while ago. I have several of the ones you’ve tested except the old Winchester & Ci. You definitely need to find & try some Federal Punch, it’s quite a wicked lil round that would go good for personal defense also. Your other video I want to watch yet. There is a guy here on UA-cam who shoots it @ 15 yards away through his chronograph from his Taurus TX22. It goes through 32” of ballistic gelly. Quite amazing. Great Video! I would like to find some vintage.22 some day to try out.
That’s what I found when I first tried the Stingers in the early 80’s, they were all over the place, leaded barrel or not (Nylon 66). Went back to my Winchester Bobcats or whatever they were called lol. Velocitors my new favorite. Those Yellow Jackets are really impressive. Can’t remember if I ever tried them though. Great video!
I’ve always been impressed with the Remington Yellow Jackets they cycled great and were accurate, but they were hell on squirrels. I usually just did headshots to save what little meat there was and it basically decapitated them. The Remington Gold and the Thunderbolt were very disappointing because of failure to fire and inaccuracy. The CCI Stinger never cycled very well in my Remington 552 Speedmaster so the Yellow Jacket was my go to hunting round. I was very disappointed when Remington stopped making the YJ. Hopefully, it will make a reappearance. I’ve got about 600 rounds that I’ve found thru Gun Broker over the years.
I commend you on your knowledge and desire to share what you have learned over the years about this great little and often unappreciated little cartridge . And as always your well thought out presentation of such info is a pleasure to watch. Have you covered any of the other rimfire cartridges yet ?
I'd like to see you try out the Federal Target/Match for accuracy through your gorgeous 581! I think it would also be fun to offer a category of videos, each video based on one type of popular ammo, i.e. Stinger perhaps or Aguila and instead of trying several different ammos, use your large collection of rifles and several additional borrowed to see how each rifle deals with the specific ammo of the video.
Great video👍 I tried also diffrent hyper velocity out of my Anschutz but in my opinion this kind off ammo was not accurate enough for head shots. I stick with standard velocity Norma match or Eley Match ammo than i,m sure i shoot 1 centimeter groups on 50 meters and with a moderator super quiet. As you told a well placed precision shot is the way to go. The Velociter has a standard case length. I would not recommend to use a longer case length in match rifles. Cheers!
Good review I tried them all back in the day but weren’t quite as accurate as regular long rifle. Federal had one out too called spit fire I used back in the day
That's generally true. Nearly all of my rifles shoot standard velocity rounds more accurately S/K Standard Plus or Wolf target rifle ammo is amazingly accurate in most .22 rifles.
I too, am impressed at your knowledge of this old ammo. I still have a full box of the old blue box stingers that no longer has the old label you showed at the beginning of the video. I originally bought 2 boxes and used them sparingly. I have since bought some of the later boxes of stingers. If the ammo supply ever breaks loose again i will get a decent supply of velocitors but not at todays prices. I always used T-22 standard velocity for all my 22 hunting and shooting which was for squirrels. This was more than enough for squirrel at any distance imo. Most of the local coon hunters used a small cheap single shot 22 to bring down treed coons using cb caps and sometimes shorts because of noise while in woods that they had no permission to be in. .22 is a very versitile and useful round
I sometimes find vintage ammo at gun shows. I recently got some Winchester .22 short hollowpoint (3 bricks), and some Remington/Peters short hollowpoint. It was a relatively rare find, but sometimes I get lucky. I also picked up a brick of T-22 ammo that is still in pristine condition. I may shoot a video featuring this older .22 ammo. Thanks for commenting.
I found the T-22 ammo to be very consistant but i was not and am not a good judge of such things. I did buy it on the recommendation of an experienced shooter back in 70ish time frame. Tom was a cherished friend that has regrettably passed from cancer. A
Thanks, well done, I have a few boxes of the stingers, I can remember when they first came out. Two years ago I did put 300 rounds of the cci velocitor away. I have a Henry that just loves to shoot them in a dime. My other 22s not so great. I thought I knew about every 22lr round ever made. But I was certainly wrong. I have never heard of the winchester round you tested. As always with your vids, very interesting ,I enjoy all your post. Thank you.
Thanks for the compliments. Every now and then I still run across vintage ammo at gun shows, yard sales, flea markets, and of course Gunbroker. When I see something that might interest my UA-cam followers, I buy it and try to do a review for you folks that can use the video to help you out.
@@markbeck3115I'm not sure where you have been looking for one of these rifles. If I were you, I would check local pawn shops, and gun shows in small towns. The last one I found was at a local pawn shop, and I gave $125 for it. It turned out to be a great little shooter. So keep that in mind, and you might just locate one of these gems.
I was never inclined to use hollow points. I preferred to use a semi-auto Cooey / Winchester. (Probably a fluke, but it was one of the most insanely accurate rimfire rifles I'd ever encountered (got it for Christmas when I was seven and used it almost exclusively into my 30s) My personal experience was that hollow points had slightly softer tips, with a tendency to 'chip' during the loading cycle. It may have been a characteristic of that particular model, but that 'chip' would obviously have an affect on accuracy. I stuck to solid tips in the semi and only used hollow points in a cz bolt gun. Those flat tips seem like a perfect compromise. Good video!
I tried the CCI Stingers and the Rem Yellow Jackets in my Glenfield 75. I don't remember specific numbers, it was long ago (I still have that original Stinger box), but I know the groups were so bad I never bought any more. Maybe the Glenfield's short barrel is not compatible with the higher velocities. Good to see you got some impressive results.
Each rifle will tend to do best with a few specific loads and others not so much. With .22 LR, probably the single biggest factor for that is rim thickness and how that matches up with the individual rifle chamber. It's even common for two of the exact same make and model of .22 LR rifle with one of the two shooting excellent groups with a given cartridge, but the other not doing very well with the same cartridge. There are several other variables with each cartridge that control how it will do.
Good point. I have a Winchester model 52 that has a slightly shorter chamber. When I load Stingers or Expediters into it, the front of the bullet bearing band engages the rifling. Thanks for watching.
I’ve shot quit a few squirrels with the stingers. They act like FMJs and don’t expand. I bought the hi shok versions and cant wait to try them on game. Both the hyper velocity HP and solid Aquila’s won’t group worth a darn in my ultralux or browning target pistol. Both the stinger and hi shok will group at a half inch at 50 yards. Not great but enough to get the job done. The Winchester 333’s shoot all in the same hole and anchor squirrels better for me. I tried the velocitors on squirrels. They stop them quicker then the 333’s but don't group as well out of my gun. Wish I could find yellow jackets. Haven’t seen them in stock anywhere since the 80’s.
Indeed they are. The rifle I was using typically shoots Stingers much better than what was depicted in the video. After about two or three shots, that gun can print some impressive groups with most anything. Mixing up the ammo the way I did, was unfair to the gun.
@@CumberlandOutdoorsman I've missed them up before even with center-fire rifles I always wandering if it's different powder fouling the barrel that makes them not shoot not as good generally because the rifle liked both loads by themselves but not when being mixed and I didn't take the time to clean the barrel before switching
This is one of the biggest problems I have found with the 22 rimfire ammo is that you can not find what your gun prefers or the type bullet you need for your use after a few years because they quit making it.
True That's why it pays to find a cartridge that does well that also has many decades of popularity to see that it stays in production. That's one of the reasons why it's so nice if you have a gun that does well with one of the real classics, such as CCI Standard Velocity.
about the only thing that varies in bulk ammo is the powder charge if you want to make match grade out of it you must weigh every bullet and keep them in piles of the same weight.
To help allot of folks with older 22s is to research which rifles with shorter chambers will not accept the longer cases as the stinger. Jammed big time in the Remington Mod. 550-1. now I would like to make you all cringe. I was a dealer in the 70s, bought 20 bricks for $ 16.50 per and over the years gave grand kids a brick for birthdays and Christmas, I cry with 1 brick left today.
I have never used the Federal Hyper velocity ammo, although I once saw it for sale. I don't think it is still in production, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the info.
Don't judge ammo by three round groups. Do an average of five 10 shot groups and then decide. Particularly with .22 ammo which can be very variable even in single lot of ammo. Also get your bore seasoned before shooting groups.
The same reason some people keep a gun in it's original box for decades without shooting it.........for collectability. Some folks keep wine bottles without ever opening them, and as time goes on the vintage becomes more and more valuable.
With Remington beginning to produce 22 ammo again, let’s all hope they concentrate on the production of some high quality performance such as Eley , SK and RWS at a price that’s compatible. It’d be great to have something compatible to the imported ammo.

I keep waiting for one of these larger firearm companies to offer a quick-change barrel, maybe similar to the Browning ATD-22 - one with the standard 16:1 twist and maybe one for the faster HyperV ammo in, say, 12:1. I'd buy *_that_* for a dollar! 😉
Always enjoy your relaxed comparative video presentations.
👊😏👍
1100ish - 1200ish fps is all I buy, never been a fan of the hypers, thx for the vids
How do the Remington Vipers fare. Just as good as the yellow jackets?
I just stopped in to watch you shoot the 541S. Nice presentation, too.
Winchester Wildcats !
Yes I have. The .22 short, the CCI Mini Mag, and several others.
Are the Remington Yellow Jackets still made? I can't find it locally. I used them as a kid hunting groundhogs with my dad. Good memories.
Great video. Thank you!
All have been excellent
I have a couple packs of those federals they came in a red case that've never been opened I bought them about 1980
I too, am impressed at your knowledge of this old ammo.
A
Well done. Thank you.
where can i buy that ammo here in Manila Philippines ive got only CCI STINGER i want other brand
I have a model 60 carbine an a Marlin bolt action both are very accurate with the Velociter
@@CumberlandOutdoorsman what model remington is that 547?
@@markbeck3115 That is a customized Rem. model 581.
@@CumberlandOutdoorsman I want one so bad but they are outrageous
@@markbeck3115I'm not sure where you have been looking for one of these rifles. If I were you, I would check local pawn shops, and gun shows in small towns. The last one I found was at a local pawn shop, and I gave $125 for it. It turned out to be a great little shooter. So keep that in mind, and you might just locate one of these gems.
Seems like I had some hyper velocity in the 90s that came in a florescent orange plastic chew can. They could have been federal spitfire
Winchester currently makes a SuperX Hyper Velocity 40 grain 22LR rated at 1435 FPS. It was tested to 1460 FPS and 185 Ft-Lbs. by another UA-camr.
I was never inclined to use hollow points. I preferred to use a semi-auto Cooey / Winchester.
(Probably a fluke, but it was one of the most insanely accurate rimfire rifles I'd ever encountered (got it for Christmas when I was seven and used it almost exclusively into my 30s)
My personal experience was that hollow points had slightly softer tips, with a tendency to 'chip' during the loading cycle.
I have read that some rimfires are not recommended for stingers due to chambers a bit short for the longer case. Have you encountered this?
Good point. I have a Winchester model 52 that has a slightly shorter chamber. When I load Stingers or Expediters into it, the front of the bullet bearing band engages the rifling. Thanks for watching.
Remington 550-1 stingers will jam in that guns chamber big time.
Stingers were 1.59 a box when they were released in 1977.
I've had some rifle that shot stingers really well and some didn't but on the rifles that did they was devastating on small game
My new CZ 457 American said do not shot long gated 22lr such as the Stinger
I returned to using non hollow points for squirrels years ago to reduce meat damage.
This is one of the biggest problems I have found with the 22 rimfire ammo is that you can not find what your gun prefers or the type bullet you need for your use after a few years because they quit making it.
This is no joke lol. Except if it likes cci loads or somthing super common!
True
That's why it pays to find a cartridge that does well that also has many decades of popularity to see that it stays in production.
That's one of the reasons why it's so nice if you have a gun that does well with one of the real classics, such as CCI Standard Velocity.
I never had luck with a Stinger they go all over, yellow jackets are always consistent
i am having trouble getting my newspapers soaked as well - even leaving them in the wading pool overnite didnt do a thorough job - any ideas?
Try using hot water.
Let them soak for a week.
Uh, they are called ground hogs NORTH of the Mason Dixon line too.
Indiana has ground hogs
There was a well known. 22 R/F shooter that had a video awhile back on that copper bullet.
I have a couple of those boxes of stangers I bought in the seventies seventies that have never been opened
And at $ 1.65 for 50 rnds. and the first box he held up.
Cool video!👍👌
What did you do to make your 581 accurate mine is not
Good Video
I only use 22 shots for Squirrels , Those Yellow Jackets are great for Ground Hogs
CCI mini mags have been my go to .22lr always perfoming flawlessly however Stingers have sub par accuracy for me 😮 😢
CCI now offers a segmented version of the Stinger. I have hunted with Stingers, Expediters and Yellow Jackets and prefer Yellow Jackets.
about the only thing that varies in bulk ammo is the powder charge if you want to make match grade out of it you must weigh every bullet and keep them in piles of the same weight.
What are those stickers on the new ammo boxes? They look like cigarette tax stamps.
the second shot with the stingers didn't sound as loud to me
😲😲😲😲verygood i from THAILAND ..4MK.65
My 1911 22 loves the yellow jackets.
Forgot how many times I've watched this video! LOL
They call them groundhogs in the Midwest and PA.
22lr is my favorite bullet for rabbits to hogs
Is that new house going to be a problem with your shooting range?
To help allot of folks with older 22s is to research which rifles with shorter chambers will not accept the longer cases as the stinger. Jammed big time in the Remington Mod. 550-1. now I would like to make you all cringe. I was a dealer in the 70s, bought 20 bricks for $ 16.50 per and over the years gave grand kids a brick for birthdays and Christmas, I cry with 1 brick left today.
better find a case of yellow paired with that rifle!
Shot many deer with the stingers! Keep shots under 25 yards aim for the White patch in the neck .
Aguila also makes that hiperin hollow point
I haven't seen it here, but I'll keep a lookout for it. Thanks for the info.
federal spitfire was another.
Well dun , ben shooting yellow jackets for years...
Thanks. Maybe Remington will continue making them now that they are back to work.
I'll take the Aguila all day every day.
What rife are you shooting?
Your fine rifle, really likes the Remington. I could not agree more on ethical hunting.
Yellow Jackets are 33 grains.
No you are wrong I'm from PA and we call them (Ground Hogs)
i’ve still got 3 bricks of yellow jackets …
Whatever you do hang on to that Remington rifle! With hyper velocity 22 ammo it is extraordinarily accurate
my 10/22 hates cci hyper ammo period.
Why do you keep ammo for 50 years instead of shooting it?
The same reason some people keep a gun in it's original box for decades without shooting it.........for collectability. Some folks keep wine bottles without ever opening them, and as time goes on the vintage becomes more and more valuable.
Expediter was the best round on the table..
With Remington beginning to produce 22 ammo again, let’s all hope they concentrate on the production of some high quality performance such as Eley , SK and RWS at a price that’s compatible. It’d be great to have something compatible to the imported ammo.
How much can a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood ? 🤣🤣👍🇭🇲🇺🇸
I Remember CCI'S FIRST ADVERTISEMENT OF THE STINGER...
IT SHOWS THE STINGER RIPPING APART A CAN OF RC SOFT DRINK
I WAS WONDERING IF CCI DISLIKE RC
Today they would get sued over it!
Use the best grouping and stay with it, enough said, Eck usmc
