I have been waiting on someone to mention “Turkish Women at the Bath”! Thank you! That record is in a category of its own. It can be found under Pete LaRoca’s name as the leader of the session as well as under Chick Corea’s name as “Bliss”. You can listen to it here on UA-cam. It is difficult to describe; my try: not quite dark but dusk, pensive, adventurous and nearly thematic as a concept album. It is intentionally mixed in such a way that the reverb is nearly as much of the session’s particular aura as are the selections and the musicians’ collective contributions. What’s more, you ask? Chick Corea on piano and, get this, John Gilmore (Sun Ra’s longtime tenor saxophonist) on the tenor saxophone! I consider it essential for any jazz collection that goes beyond the well traveled go tos. Thank you for recognizing this wonderfully strange, adventurous and, yes, beautiful LP!
Makes me glad I'm not buying much Jazz... I'd go broke keeping up with you Jazz kids. I'll say one thing so many Blue Note Jazz titles have such great artwork. 😎👍
My favorite 80s BN is Larry Young's Into Somethin for sure.... Smokestack, Foreign Intrigue, Indestructible and Alligator Bogaloo comes next. All great though, only got 23 out of the 37, but slowly getting there 👍👌
Nice video. Great to see brilliant 80 series getting some love … my current top 5 Elvin Jones Mr Jones Art Blakey Indestructable Kenny Durham Una Mas Jackie McLean A Fickle Sonance Herbie Hancock Takin Off
@@JazzBums maybe we both should do one of titles we'd like to see.... I have a lot of them!( of course what they can issue is based on tape availability and quality)..JG
Great video. I was literally thinking...where is Inventions and Dimensions....and then...boom 🔥Totally agree #1 by a mile. I’d also include Una Mas in my top 5. Checking out Smoke Stack now. Cheers Graham
If you guys want to take a look and virtual listen to an original inventions and dimensions… Let me know. I got the OG for free in the apartments of a gentleman who had passed away about 30 years ago.
Great recs gentlemen! Whenever you see Willie Bobo in the personnel there’s going to to be a Latin flair. Herbie new what he was doing when he nabbed up Bobo for Inventions and Dimensions. I also highly recommend Willie Bobo records when he’s the band leader. Great Boogaloo artist!
5 In and out. (I think other record beat it musically but this cover is top 10 all time in jazz m. 4 Taken off. Incredible lineup and I am piano biased. 3 Inventions and Dimensions for everything said in the video. It’s also why I love Kenny dorham because he does similar things on a couple records 2 Open sesame. Nothing else to be added from the video. It’s just great. 1. Indestructible. Love it. Top 3 Blakey record and he is a top 5 jazz artist for me so it’s a no brainer. Jazz messengers are just too good.
Hey Thom - I don’t think I can paste a link in the comment without it getting pulled down by UA-cam. When I Google “Blue Note 80 series” the first link will get you to the announcement page from 2019 - this will have the list.
@@JazzBums Sweet…thanks, I’ll check that out. What I’m trying to figure out is are the BN80, Classic, and Tone Poet all separate pressings with no crossover? What i mean is did, or will my BN80’s become Tone Poets?
We can't say for sure, but most likely they will not revisit the same titles across the different series. Blue Note considers the 80s and Classics to be all one series now basically. - Chris
I love your conversations, you're a great inspiration when I search for Blue Note's. Thank you!
Glad you like them!

Alright I need to give Foreign Intrigue another listen. I feel like I just listened to it once and didn't give it a critical listen. - Chris
@@JazzBums I was amazed how good it is just for the fact that its from 1985 but it doesnt sound like one..... thanks guys
Another fine session, gentlemen. Loved your picks - at least the ones I know. However the ones I don't know I'll be looking into. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching Geoff! - Chris

Cheers. Chris. I really like Elvin Jones Blue Note outings. Haven’t managed to track them all down yet …..
Forgot to add that my number zero and top BN80 is Pete La Roca Basra. One of Joe Henderson’s best ever dates
It is really really good :) - Chris
This is a great video. Very informative
Thanks, hope it helps people go see/find even more!!
Good Job... couldn't agree more!
Thanks, Jack! So many titles to choose from, picking 5 can be hard…. But can’t go wrong with any

Great vid. Hey Mike what was the name of that documentary you mentioned with RVG?
I believe it was said in this documentary: vimeo.com/744434960
Is the list you show at the beginning of your video available somewhere?
