1985 Honda ATC 200X Leaky Carb Fix / Repair. Keep your gas in the tank, not on the floor!

- Today we put on the Southern Offroad hat and got to work on my 1985 Honda ATC 200X. This thing has had a leaky carb since the first time I put gas in the tank. Naturally, we immediately think of a stuck float or a needle valve that has dried out... so we pulled this beauty into the shop to get the carburetor off of it and see what it looks like inside.
We were thrown a couple curveballs in this process. I don't want to spoil it for you, but it didn't go exactly according to plan... so have a watch and let me know what you think!

Very nice sir! Cant beat a Honda.
That's right! Thank you@
well i'm glad i'm not the only one that does everything properly and still has to do the job 2-10 times before its finally fixed lol I enjoy your vids a lot, nice calm demeanor, none of that fake x games machismo on most of the atv channels and it gets me amped up to work on my Manco's. I even bought a 3'x6' "Manco machines" banner to display at Trikefest next year and a NOS manco machines hat, and manco long sleeve shirt from back in the day. So its a official, i have to get this thing done by then, bad back and cold damp weather or not.
HA! Thank you very much for enjoying the videos! That was one thing that was important to me was to just be real, so if you meet me someplace, who you meet is the same guy you see on UA-cam. I don't want to have to put on an act. I appreciate you enjoying me being me. Can't wait to see that Manco set up!!
@@ThisOldTrike My parts for a custom inverted fork/disc brake/billet and BEEFY aluminum triple trees just showed up today and finally got all the parts for the 480 cc briggs v twin. I have a 620 vanguard that I plan to go through and really make some decent power (50-60 hp) with eventually. The 480 is just mild, only about 20-25 hp, so your 350x is safe for now lol If you ever get one in your hands from your parts stash, man I really wanna try to run a 81-82 200x front fender, but need to know the distance between the fork cutouts to see if it will fit between my 48mm shocks. Its always better to just be yourself on these sorts of vids, it comes across much more genuinely/professionally IMO then the guys tryin to ham it up for the camera.
Why not disassemble and immersion dip the whole catb in cleaner while you have it off the bike? The smallest amount of grime or dirt can cause that float to stick or the needle to not seat. Get a gallon can of it to keep around the shop.
It wasn't my goal to get into things that far. I would have preferred that, and also to detail the entire machine, but dinner was about to be ready!
😂"looks good, but leaks gas" I had a ol' girlfriend like that once.😅
I bet that's why she's an old girlfriend!

What a spectacular rollecoaster of emotions throughout. Great video Preston. Thats reality of three wheelin.
I even had to cuss a little! Imagine what I said OFF camera!
I had to remove my header pipe to remove my carb. It was supertrapp exhaust which is much larger in diameter than stock. Good for you that you didn't have to.
Oh wow, yeah, that's a lot! I was very surprised how tight the fit was.
Still my all time favorite machine. Great video
Thanks brother! I appreciate that!
I always take the 200x carb out and in on the left side go under the intake.
Yes, intake removal makes it easier to r&r.
Also, pine sol makes for good cheap carb cleaner that is not as harsh on carb parts.
Good tip sir!
May not be the floating aspect...it could be the fingers that hold the needle are worn theres not enough travel to stop flow or its cock-eyeing the needle and its jamming in the brass bore
I'm picking up what you're putting down.
I was available all day Saturday, and Sunday.... the hotline is always open i would gladly pass on all the tips and tricks i have on the matter
I should have called!
Good evening bud .
Howdy partner!
The baassani pipe must be different. Both my 200x have cobra pipes and carb comes right out the back on both of them. Ive only ever had cobras so not sure what the big difference is.
Yeah, the Bassani pipes are pretty uncommon. It has a nice sound to it. I really dig it. I have a DG on my 83 and it's pretty loud.
A great way to clean the brass needle valve seat is with a Q-tip in a drill with a daub of metal / brass polish. Makes that brass seat shine like new.
I had some mothers polish I was looking for, but my shop is a disaster and I couldn't put my hands on it... Next time!
@@ThisOldTrike so funny... there is no doubt stuff in your shop just grows legs and walks off. Always learning something from you my man. Love the channel...and you have an awesome family!
@@71rcode72 Thanks brother! I appreciate those kind words very much! Family is everything!
Im only at 6:10 but the slide needs to come out first the air boot can stay just pull carb off studs collapsing the boot then once free of studs push carb down and spin and twist and rotate till it comes out and the shock nitrogen line has to be moved to the side or down to the case.... all that said... the 84 i did 2 weeks ago has a stock pipe 7:20 yep
I think you did too much work.
@ThisOldTrike it sounds like alot it ends up coming out the shifter side of the machine
Would removing the intake boot (2-8mm bolts)off the engine give enough clearance to sneak the carb out?
I was trying to disturb as little as possible.
My 84 had a riveted petcock and my 85 as well... that looks like someone knocked the rivets out put a gasket in it and used screws 27:37
You are correct sir. Someone has been in there.
@@ThisOldTrike why honda had some serviceable and others not, is beyond me
Bonjour,
Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo.
Tommy
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching!
Interesting video, really good stuff, thank you! 👌
Really glad you liked it sir!!
I have a I think it’s a 1982 Honda atc70 I got it from original owner it’s all good except the tank. I hadn’t been run in about 35 years been kept in a shop its whole life. I put new tires on it and carburetor cleaned points and cranked it actually runs great can you tell me what it’s worth thanks for your time
Instead of using steel wool, a q-tip and rubbing compound/polish works well too
P.s. you're not alone in your carb removal woes 😂
Thanks for the tip brother!!
Thanks for the content, keep up the good work!
You put the plastic cone over the main jet upside-down.
My buddy Brian pointed that out too. I'm unsure if I did it wrong all three times now...
I was waiting for the mouth to mouth air blow test on the fuel line to test the needle valve. I can't put a small carb back together without doing it once!
Ooooh, I like that. I'm going to add that to my bag of tricks.
Its handy when you want to make sure the valve is seating correctly, Right side up, blow, air go thru, turn carb upside down, float falls, valve seats, blow, should hear no air go thru. Too bad it won't diag a float that no float though!@@ThisOldTrike
Hey bud don’t know if your looking but there’s a lot of almost mint 3 wheelers on market place On the east coast
Hey bro ingotnan85 200x but my little son move the hoses from the carburetor. I have no idea which is the position of them. Can you show to me whic are the position of hoses form carburetor please each by each😊
Nicely done. You did get me worried about your paint for a little bit. Sounds good 👍
Thanks brother!!
Push choke closed and slide out towards shock ad going up.
As soon as it leaked I was like son of a.. exactly at the same time as you 😂😂. Excellent video as always Preston! I do enjoy the wrenching moments
Thanks brother!! We're in this together! Lol
They can be frustrating sometimes, but there worth it. Good video Preston. Just became a insider.
I saw that! I need to put a new video up and welcome you!
Beautiful 85....
How does MRC builds make it look so easy???😂
Way to keep at it man!
The magic of editing!
The carb was taken of my '85 200X this summer when I cleaned and re-jetted it. Your's has 2 vent hose's and mine only had the one. Any idea on that?
It sounds like you're missing one. One is to drain the bowl, one is the overflow. Which one are you missing?
@@ThisOldTrike The one next to the choke according to yours. Funny though because it's never been off on the 38yrs I've owned it till this summer. I don't remember one even being there.
That's the over flow. They're not held on super securely. Mine actually came off while handling the carb during the video.
@@ThisOldTrike Thanks, I will address that situation.
The plastic piece around the main jet is not installed correctly. It’s upside down.
Yeah, couple guys mentioned that also. Now I can't remember if I did that all three times or not.
No worries just wanted to throw it out there incase the float was hanging up on it. I watched to the end and glad the new float cleared up the issue!!
@@ryand8639 Very much appreciated! I bet it's in there wrong. Honestly I want to detail the machine up more... so I just may get in there again for the hell of it.
I noticed you had two needle valves on the table
Good eye! One was out of this carb. One was out of a kit I had previously used, so that laid there too.
@@ThisOldTrike my neighbor was working on a carb and called me over cause he couldn’t figure out why it was dumping out gas. He forgot to put the needle valve in. So when I saw two I figured the same. Love the videos
Where can you get the oil seal kit for a 84 200es??
Great question...
congrats brother.
Thank you sir!
Take the intake off
I'm employing a "disturb as little as possible" technique.
She’s clean
Thanks buddy!
Too many duch bag quotes.😊
