I have the 36 inch model of that grill. And while I am very pleased with it, overall just a word of caution. If you are using wood chips, mixed with your pellets, I find that even at a 50-50 mix. The grill will not ignite without putting a handful of straight pellets in the hopper. The wood chips definitely provide a smokier flavor, but it becomes a bit of a pain in the ass because when the grill doesn’t ignite and you shut it down, it wants to go through the cool down sequence even though the grill never got hot in the first place. If you just go ahead and unplug it, it confuses The controller and it still doesn’t know what to do. So I have found that the best results is to just take a handful of pellets throw them in the hopper and start it that way if you’re going to use a 50-50 mix.
Love my LSG 42 Pellet. Came from a $1k GMG and such an upgrade. I really considered the Campchef Woodwind Pro as well so will be interesting to see how they compare... though even though it's a lot more I had to go for the quality, even though I think that wood drawer is really nice. Also after my GMG I was determined to NOT have a pellet smoker with a long auger run to the center and a hard to clean out burn pot. The Knotty Wood Pellets I would use would clog out the GMG and burn pot every cook and after rain etc jams across the auger sometimes too. The LSG is so easy to clean, pop that burn pot out, the short open auger and chute prevents most jams etc. Then a deeper clean out every once in a while.
Man I have been using one of these for over a year and I love it. Very consistent and reliable. I had no idea you could mix in wood chips. That was the only thing I was missing. Thanks for the info!
I've had a few pellet grills over the years and the one consistent problem with them all is you don't get the smoke flavor like you do with an offset stick burner. For anyone that owns this and likes their BBQ smokey how would you say the smoke flavor is on this compared to a stick burner?
Can’t wait to see what you think of this thing after some cooks. I’ve been wondering how much more quality you get from something this expensive, and if the food comes out so well it helps to justify the cost
Looking forward to your comparisons with the Woodwind Pro and even more so the Masterbuilt 800. From your videos, it seems it's hard to beat those two, especially the MB800 for the price. I'm about to get myself an MB800 and look forward to all the delicious foods I've seen here. Thanks for all you do!!
For sure! There will be comparisons with both. The one thing that I can immediately say is that the build quality DOES make a difference and will outlive MOST pellet grills and smokers out there.
Would to see how this smoker does during the winter months. I have a Pit Boss 820 going on 3 years and Iive in NJ and it’s been doing pretty good with my insulated blanket. Of course I want something bigger and something built in the USA. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Good Luck with your LSG!
You won't need a blanket to maintain a set temp. A blanket may reduce the amount of pellets you burn, but it'll hold whatever temp from 160-450° you want. That steel is thick and there's not a single leak point in that chamber besides a tiny port (with cover) for the temp probes.
I live in Alberta, Canada. I’ve smoked at -15 Celsius(about 5 degrees F) and this thing runs like a champ. It obviously requires more pellets at lower temps but once it is up to temperature it holds heat very well.
Thanks for taking the time to do this video. Since the fire box is completely removable, I would have liked to see how the electrical connection is made when it's slid into place, and how durable that connection is when removing and replacing the fire box over time. Also, when this thing is running, what is the maximum amperage draw? Any heating appliance draws more amps, so it matters where you plug it in. I'm guessing it's designed to run on a 20 amp 120v circuit wired with 12-2, but if other things are on the same circuit, it matters.
The firebox has no electrical connection or components. It simply holds the pellets as they burn. In terms of the current draw, the most comes at ignition.. then it’s only auger and fan for the rest of the cook. I have a clamp on meter that I can use to see current on start up, I’ll do it this weekend when I pull it out to cook.
I am thinking about geting a new smoker for our new house when we move. This thing would be awesome of course! BUT first I want to see your comparisons to the other high end smokers then hear your opinion on which is the best. Looking forward to this journey with you, you are the man!!
I love the direction these manufacturers are going (incorporating actual wood chips with the pellets). I will be watching your channel closely for more on this. A comparison with the WW Pro and the Gravity feed specifically. As always, thank you for your honest reviews.
Great video. One tip: DO NOT run any wood chips other than the ones available at Lone Star Grillz. I missed that part in Greg's video from Ballistic BBQ and had an auger jam due to some of the wood chips being too long. It ran great for a while then jammed. Can't wait to see some cooks and comparisons.
Congratulations on your lone star, I'm looking at the smaller version myself, but I'm also looking at the hasty bake Kent Rollins roughneck and teaming it up with a reqtec bullseyes 380x pellet grill, together price is under 2000. But lonestar quality is tops and would outlast the reqtec. And now lonestar comes out with the patron. Ohh well, thanks for your outstanding video's
I would love a taste test between the Lone Star and your Camp Chef Woodwind Pro. Most interested in the difference (or lack there of) on a brisket. This will help me in my future decision on my next smoker.
I'll be doing this soon! Have been waiting for the wood chips from Lone Star Grillz... they have been out of stock for a while and they are a MUST for this comparison!
I love all your videos brother! How ever I can only imagine how much that thing cost I would guess somewhere from 1200-2000 For the price of that and again I’m only assuming price, you can buy a custom off set smoker! I would and this is just me prefer for that price to use actual wood rather then pallets… good review tho for those that would prefer pellets for that price point!
Could you possibly test the charcoal basket? As well as steak searing! I also have been drooling over this pellet smoker since it was released. IMO best on market . Period. Great review - Thank
Excited to see what you cook first on that beast. 👍🏽 I actually wasn’t even thinking of comparing it to the Camp Chef Windwood Pro but I’m curious to see how it goes. I was actually thinking of comparing it to a Pitts & Spits pellet smoker or a Pellet Pro Cabinet smoker. Maybe even a gravity fed smoker. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
I have the pitts and spitts maverick 1250 with the smoke cage. I got to tell you it’s a game changer. Clean constant smoke and burning wood chunks. Wood wind pro wouldn’t come close.
I'm looking at buying a new pellet smoker in the near future. This is one of the one's I've been looking at along with the Pitts and Spitts and Yoder. Any input would be great!
I wonder how this compares with the Yoder 640s, I think it is.?? I'll bet they're close to neck and neck, but I don't know. This looks like a brick (you know what) house grill. Great review and I'm looking foreward to some cooking and comparrison videos in the future. Marc.
When you compare the Camp chef that burn chunks of wood, and this Lone star smoker…what do you think is the closest to the off stick burner smoke taste? Regards, Tony. Ps does the pull handle pivot the wheels for steering?
Will you be doing a comparison with the WWpro? Obviously different price points but it would be interesting to see the difference the wood box makes vs adding wood chips in the LSG. I’m in the market and down to these two.
I'll be doing this soon! Have been waiting for the wood chips from Lone Star Grillz... they have been out of stock for a while and they are a MUST for this comparison!
I’m looking at ordering one but keep looking back at the woodwind pro. The wood chips keep me hopeful. Be great to hear the best way to go. Cost is not the concern although I’ve been saving for a year and can pick only one. Is the LSG the one? Also trying to decide 36 or 42 for a home cook and occasional group. Love to hear your thought so I can maybe have it ordered and get it before Christmas. Great videos also just saw the xxl pro in person and man that is interesting.
I’ll be comparing the LSG and WWPro here soon! In terms of 36 or 42, I think the 42 all day. At the little cost difference, I think it’s worth the upgrade
Thank you for the in-depth review. Appreciate it. Can you tell me how long it took from ordering until you received it? Just asking because I know they make each one individually and have great quality because of that!
Now you got me thinking. I was going to buy the Camp Chef WWP 36 with that smoke box, but after watching your review on this, I don't know...this one has potential!@@AndersonsSmokeShow
From what i heard is that it's consistency comes from the programming in that fireboard controller..... i have a fireboard that runs a masterbuilt 1050. Its very consistent but that a different kind of grill... Idventure to say that I could 100% believe that theory.
I want to see some cooks first and foremost, but a comparison with the Woodwind Pro is what i really want to see.. A cook with the Woodwind using chunks and the LSG with AND without a mix of wood chips. Can also compare and demonstrate the examples of build quality. Thinner, lighter weight "stainless" steel (at half the price of the LSG), compared to the build quality of good ol' american steel.
As always brother great video, since you asked, I’m really interested to see what you think about close to a charcoal/lump, lump, gravity series the food is, or do I already know the answer? Keep up the good work bro 💯👍
Looking at a Lone Star Pellet grill. I have a Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24 now. Like the smoker a lot. But, I question if the Lone Star produces as good or better than the Camp Chef. I know you have both smokers, have you thought about doing a side by side comparison?
I have, and I had been waiting for the Lonestar wood chips to come back in stock. They are supposed to be delivered this week, so that video will be coming soon.
I was hoping you could do pellets only and see how it compares. Never seen so much smoke come from a pellet smoker. I have seen videos comparing to an offset. Would be cool if you did a pellet only & pellet wood chips against the Camp Chef. Thanks for the reply!
Hello there Anderson, the reason I'm asking this question is because I just watched your Lone Star pellet grill video. I am looking into acquiring a made in America smoker. I was looking at the Yoder YS640S and now thinking about the Lone Star Grills pellet grill. Would you have any information that would help me make my decision easier. Thank you
I’ve seen the Yoders, I’ve watched other cook on the Yoders and I think they are nice smokers! I do think that this Lonestar is top dawg when it comes to pellet grills
Thank you . I appreciate all your videos . I would like to order one of these . Question i would like to add a custom logo on mines . Worrying where or how you came up with yours . Tia
Have you used a Yoder YS640s? If so how is the smoke compared to it? Has the gasket placement been a problem as far as drippings and deglueing? The auger output location and lack of shielding seems prone to food/oil buildup. Has it been a problem? It looks like the bottom grate has to be completely removed to slide the grill shield over. Has that been a pain?
After having this for a while do you find that the off-road package makes the smoker too tall? Any regrets in not going with the 8 in casters? I am looking to order soon and was concerned it might be too tall. I am around the same height as you.
This is the ONLY pellet grill that you can run a blend of Lonestars wood chips(smaller uniformly ground) with pellets or even chips alone for the ultimate pellet grill experience. Try that in a Traeger without jamming the auger....s When you compare this to that Camp Chef (which is cool for a chinese made inexpensive smoker) make sure you compare this to that using just pellets on both. Then using pellets and wood chunks on the camp chef and chips and pellets @ 50/50 mix on the Lonestar...
@AndersonsSmokeShow sweet!!! I will DEFINITELY be waiting for those videos. Its gonna taste 100% better with those chips added. I have a smoke daddy magnum P.i.g. smoke generator hooked to my traeger. It makes that traeger taste like a stick burner. Finally these companies are starting to evolve these pellet grills. Blending real wood and pellets and other various hybrid styled grills.
Great video,I’ve been considering this smoker . Hope you consider a pig on this beauty. Been enjoying your videos for years and really like your show , Thanks. Mark from Clarence Center,NY
I have a Yoder ys640 and I still have to use a smoke tube for additional smoke flavor I want to know if you need it for the lone Star pellet smoker is a smoker tube needed or not
I heard you make a comment that have the door closed when the grill is igniting. I've always kept my lid open til I see the display reads, ignite. Is that not the case for the LSG?
The instructions say to keep the lid closed during startup. Most pellet grills say the opposite, but apparently this controller needs to sense a temperature rise.
@@AndersonsSmokeShow I recently went from a Recteq to a Yoder because I actually had a couple of issues with burn back through the auger. After the first time I just couldn't trust the unit after shutdown. The shutdown program on the Recteq is only 300 seconds which in my opinion is far too short. I've been happy with the Yoder but also love that it and the Lonestar are made in the US. That's a huge plus for me. Looking forward to the comparison. Both Fireboard, both have sear feature, etc.
You should probably include in the video or at least the description that you did not pay retail for this due to an agreement with lone star grillz. People can still make independent assessments despite a professional discount, and its hard to imagine you won’t be enthusiastic about the results given the investment in time and money, but without acknowledging the discount its hard to trust your review.
Lone Star Grillz probably said “Hey, Barbecue Guy, we will give you a top of the line smoker, with upgraded golf cart wheels for free if you pass along a few kind words about the smoker in one of your videos” Barbecue Guy goes “Oh Hell yeah!, where do I sign? ?”
@@AndersonsSmokeShowit does matter. It’s about integrity man. It definitely builds trust in your review if you are clear that you paid full price or not, but either way will give an honest review. That being said I paid full price for the grill and agree with everything you said. It is an awesome grill and that was a very informative video. 👍🏼
As much as I love your videos and enjoy you, 4k is straight up stupid for a smoker. I’ll take that 4k and build a small trailer and competition smoker. Also in my opinion pellet smokers should be off the market period. Otherwise I am looking forward to some 321 rib comparisons!
I'd love to see it side by side with a 980 or other gravity fed. Close friend has this smoker and I have a 980 run by the fireboard. We'd love to settle the argument 🙂. Thanks for the great video!
It’s hard to say without doing a cook comparison and seeing them run side by side. In terms of smoke from each just with pellets, this thing SMOKES a lot! No worries though there will be some cook offs between the two coming later this month and November.
You asked what I would like to see... I REALLY would like to see a message from you that asks me to give you my address so you can send that thing to me. It is my dream. My PB just took a dump on me for the 3rd time and now I am trying to figure out how to replace it, and put a Christmas together for my kids, and pay my mortgage.
I wouldn’t pigeonhole myself like that. There are some pretty awesome products out there… and let me ask you this, does Traeger say “there’s only one beka for me and it’s beka4780”?
I have the 36 inch model of that grill. And while I am very pleased with it, overall just a word of caution. If you are using wood chips, mixed with your pellets, I find that even at a 50-50 mix. Has the gasket placement been a problem as far as drippings and deglueing?
The auger output location and lack of shielding seems prone to food/oil buildup. Has it been a problem?
It looks like the bottom grate has to be completely removed to slide the grill shield over. Has that been a pain?
I have the YS640 and I have the exact same questions. Hoping for an answer soon.
Nice job man....
Thanks!
Awesome! Cant wait!
Weather also sucks in Ohio, so that buys me some time
Any quick thoughts in your experience just the difference in smoke flavor in the two? Are they close? Sniff a stick burner??
After having this for a while do you find that the off-road package makes the smoker too tall? Any regrets in not going with the 8 in casters? I am looking to order soon and was concerned it might be too tall. I am around the same height as you.
So I’m 5’9 and I don’t have an issue with the height, but it’s right on the verge of being too tall. Closing the lid I’m almost on my tip toes
Going to give it a shot. Ordered it yesterday. Can’t wait. Thanks.
This is the ONLY pellet grill that you can run a blend of Lonestars wood chips(smaller uniformly ground) with pellets or even chips alone for the ultimate pellet grill experience. Try that in a Traeger without jamming the auger....s
When you compare this to that Camp Chef (which is cool for a chinese made inexpensive smoker) make sure you compare this to that using just pellets on both. Then using pellets and wood chunks on the camp chef and chips and pellets @ 50/50 mix on the Lonestar...
I need to get me some of those chips. When I got the grill they were out of stock. I plan on doing several comparisons between them
@AndersonsSmokeShow sweet!!!
I have a Yoder ys640 and I still have to use a smoke tube for additional smoke flavor I want to know if you need it for the lone Star pellet smoker is a smoker tube needed or not
There will be a Yoder comparison coming in the somewhat near future!
Great video
It’s my next smoker
It’s a great one too!
Great video! How wide is the from tire to tire? I want to see if this fits between my gate.
I think it’s near 40 inches… but I can measure when I get home.

Whats the highest temp is goes to? Does the temp go high enough to be able to "grill" as compared to some of others such as weber or camp chef?
450F but can get upwards of 600F with the direct sear
Nice grill. Wish I could afford one. I would like to see you smoke a brisket or a pork butt or grill a streak.
There will be some of all of that!
Compare it to the master built please
That’ll be coming!
Awesome looking grill , don’t think I am talking wife into it though 😭😭
Yeah that’s the most challenging part 🤣
Ask for forgiveness, not permission 😁 - 12months same as cash financing too (payments only start when they begin fabricating)
Wished they'd do a gravity
They have a great explanation as to why they don’t in their FAQ
How many Boston Butts will it hold please.
I don’t see why you couldn’t do a dozen or more
Looks fantastic. Very well made and I love that it’s all US built. Any thoughts of this compared directly to a Yoder?
The plan is to film a comparison between them this fall
@@AndersonsSmokeShow I recently went from a Recteq to a Yoder because I actually had a couple of issues with burn back through the auger. After the first time I just couldn't trust the unit after shutdown. The shutdown program on the Recteq is only 300 seconds which in my opinion is far too short. I've been happy with the Yoder but also love that it and the Lonestar are made in the US. That's a huge plus for me. Looking forward to the comparison. Both Fireboard, both have sear feature, etc.
love it
Me too!

Gotta get me one
You should probably include in the video or at least the description that you did not pay retail for this due to an agreement with lone star grillz. People can still make independent assessments despite a professional discount, and its hard to imagine you won’t be enthusiastic about the results given the investment in time and money, but without acknowledging the discount its hard to trust your review.
This was mostly an overview where I’m stating facts, which makes no difference regardless of our agreement.
Damn, was looking forward to the coming videos too
Poor people HATE lone star grillz 😂
@@AndersonsSmokeShowit does matter. It’s about integrity man. It definitely builds trust in your review if you are clear that you paid full price or not, but either way will give an honest review. That being said I paid full price for the grill and agree with everything you said. It is an awesome grill and that was a very informative video. 👍🏼
My question is how does it hold heat in winter
I live in north east Ohio, so I’ll be able to tell you in a few months 🤣
@@AndersonsSmokeShow sounds good lol it's already freezing here
As much as I love your videos and enjoy you, 4k is straight up stupid for a smoker. I’ll take that 4k and build a small trailer and competition smoker. Also in my opinion pellet smokers should be off the market period. Otherwise I am looking forward to some 321 rib comparisons!
The best part is that you’re free to do or use whatever you want.
@@AndersonsSmokeShow you are absolutely right! I just don’t see the point in spending 4k on a smoker that size.
Needs limited slip differential.
I'd love to see it side by side with a 980 or other gravity fed. Close friend has this smoker and I have a 980 run by the fireboard. We'd love to settle the argument 🙂. Thanks for the great video!
There’s definitely a comparison cook coming!
Like your reviews. No B.S..... Would like to a video or you loading it into the truck bed. I'd hold my breath ....
I haven’t had the reason to take it anywhere yet, but I’d LIKE to think that I could lol
More smoke than woodwind pro?
It’s hard to say without doing a cook comparison and seeing them run side by side. In terms of smoke from each just with pellets, this thing SMOKES a lot! No worries though there will be some cook offs between the two coming later this month and November.
That’s my next smoker. Hopefully tax time 🤞🏻
Yikes 😱 💴. I’ll stick to my recteq for a while.
It is costly but the build quality is far beyond the rest of the pellet grill market
For me: Only Traeger for Life!!!
I wouldn’t pigeonhole myself like that. There are some pretty awesome products out there… and let me ask you this, does Traeger say “there’s only one beka for me and it’s beka4780”?
@@AndersonsSmokeShowI know that they wouldn‘t say that, but that is my opinion! I am so satisfied, so Traeger is for me the best (quality and price)
3000.00 lol
Camp chef smokes a lot and I mean a lot more than his review shows… fake sponsored review
There will be comparisons coming. Nothing fake or sponsored here.
Lame review and no comparisons to the other grills just stating specs lol… super lame
This is an overview of THIS Lone Star Grillz Pellet Grill. Comparisons are coming. Not a fake sponsored anything
Paid advertisement.
Nope.
No balls .. super middle of the road review
Make your own videos then 🤷🏼♂️
