Bob is the alternator on a 2010 terrain w/a 3.0 engine, the same position as this one? Same steps? Guy wants $200 to change my alternator. I think that's highway robbery.😦 My concern is the A. Having the right tools. B. The 1st nut you reconnected- w/the alternator not mounted. (Something) about a copper thread(?) & the electrical connections. I'm afraid of dropping or breaking something.
Single mom with kids, I’ve always worked in cars myself to save on $. Thanks so much for teaching alternator swap so simply and making it so people can understand!
I've even worked as mechanic for a couple years, and going back to not having a lift is quite a pain for me as I'm pretty big. Thank you for explaining this in a way that doesn't require me to lift the car 4 feet into the air!
Huge Time Saver I could have figured out how to change it. I've change alternators before, but it's the little things like removing that stud and not fighting with the AC lines that make this such a great video, thank you very much... this is exactly why the internet is so powerful I would argue that I'm orders of magnitude more capable than any of my ancestor before me
Thanks very much for making this video. Great job. I watched this and knew I'd be able to swap out the failed alternator in my 2010 Equinox with 86k miles. Turns out mine was bolted on with 3 bolts, no stud like the one you found. I bought the car used from a lot so have no history on it but I would assume it's the original alternator. I also removed the entire air filter box in one piece rather than remove the top cover first like you did. Saved a bit of time. I also removed the air intake box, the large plastic box that attaches directly to the throttle body. Only have to loosen up the hose clamp attaching it to the throttle body so that's real easy to pull off. Gave me a bit more room to reach down there.
Yeah the EQUINOX LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME JUST GOT 3 BOLTS AND THE GROUND WIRE AND THE CONNECTOR TO THE ALTENATOR IS ALOT EASIER TO DISCONNECT BC THERE IS NO ALUMINUM LINE IN THE WAY BUT IT IS ALL THE SAME ALMOST THATS CRAZY LOL TOOK ME ABOUT 20 MIN ITS EASY FOR SURE
One more time saving tip: skip the step of removing the 4 bolts and the air box lid. Loosen the hose clamp as you did then the two back bolts on the base of the air box. The whole box, top and bottom, will come out as a unit.
Good tip on the stud removal for clearance. Wonder how seized that stud would be up here in the salty northeast after a few years 🤪 Happy Father’s Day Brian
So, mine just went out. If I take it to a shop, labor shouldn't be anymore than 3 hours right? I just want to make sure they don't try and rip me off. I'm saying 3 hours because they "jave" to do their diagnostic, the actual swap, take another hour to make the job worth their while, then do proper testing ti make sure everything works properly. I just got a new battery probably about a year ago, I know it's dead now, but under warranty. So I'll need to go and get a new battery once the new alternator is in. So estimated cost for this repair should be a little over $2k? That being parts, diagnostics and labor correct?
Just purchased a new high output alternator, and have seen that it is recommended to replace the factory ground strap and charge wire, how would this be done?
An ECU right in top of the battery! I saw a film by Scanner Danner of him tracing a wiring short on a Chevrolet Equinox. He found some corroded wires on the harness coming from the ECU that was mounted on top of the battery. I reckon that's a common thing for y'all full-time mechanic folk. Engineers, whether automotive or not, should be forced to work on everything they design. Three questions my friend, did you try the normal serpentine belt removal tool to access the tensioner first before using your bent-handled ratchet? The ratchet seemed to provide easier access than the straight, belt removal tool would. Also, you took off the serpentine belt just enough from the alternator pulley, you didn't have any issues of resetting the belt on any of the other pulleys? One last question. How was that engine bay so clean?
Donald Hollums I can see in the future that PCM being mounted on the battery is going to have some issues with corrosion. As far as the belt tensioner goes there was plenty of room to get just about any style ratchet or belt tensioner tool in there. It was just a matter of choice. I chose the ratchet because not everybody has a belt tensioner tool. The engine bay was clean because it’s a California car with only 30,000 miles on it.
HI, I have a 2016 chev equinox (2.4L) and I checked the voltage while car was running (under load with lights, radio, heat on) and it's sitting at 15.2, is this too high? If so, I might need to replace my alternator?
I have 14.90 on my original as was looking to change out thinking regulator was bad as the battery got so hot it boiled the water out. I saw the same 14.95 on video, IS THIS NORMAL for this model? A year later what have you done or what issues have surfaced?
@@bartrowe3705 No it's not normal I found out, my alternator was over charging the battery. The second I replaced the alternator everything went back to normal.
So when I took my alternator out, the main power feed wire came out with it. Connected to the alternator. So I swapped the wires over, but I don’t know where the other end of the power feed wire goes 😭
@@HowtoAutomotivewhat were you trying to put? I was worried about frying my 2012 terrain, so I put a weak single 12 inch sub. I hate it lol. Looking to put some decent 2 12’s. Maybe 500-750 rms
Hi Brian, I watched your video on How to Replace an Alternator on a 2010 - 2017 Chevrolet Equinox. One question, the voltmeter in the video showed an output of 14.95 volts. From what I have seen online, the output should not exceed 14 volts. Is the voltage output on this new alternator okay, or too high? My current 2010 Equinox has an output of 14.67 and my voltmeter indicates it is too high so I am wondering if it should be replaced. Thank you for your assistance.

If you can’t get The stone removed then you’ll have to create clearance by removing the AC line. Which means evading the system then unbolt the hose to make room.
