I was cleaning my shop a bit today, creating a home for the drum sander and just watched this video. Now I know what to do with small pieces. I'll have to do the dovetails on my router table (No CNC), but I should be able to devise a jig. New challenge! Nice piece! Josh
I have watched many of your videos and I do believe I like the way this bowl looks the best. It reminds be of a jigsaw puzzle. In addition, your mind must be working 24/7 without stopping in order to create so many different patterns.
Thank you very much Irma I am pleased to hear you like this one. Yes it does look like a jig saw puzzle and I do have an idea based on that. It will take more work so I am thinking about it. I do like to keep my mind busy on good things like this. Thanks for watching. Gary
That was really cool. I an see where there are a number of possibilities for different looks. For instance, each ring is alternated in the direction the dovetails point; or, two walnut dovetails into opposite sides of the maple and also put dovetails on the maple with the same treatment. There are a bunch of ways.
Thank you very much. i did that one a number of years ago. It was sure fun to do and I have been wanting to do another similar This one is about 7 feet to the left of me on a shelf and I like to look over now and then. Thanks again, Gary
I always love to see your work! The CNC mill sounds like a valuable tool. It sure made for accurate work. I think for me to accomplish this would have been my Keller jig to cut dovetails into strips. Glue the strips together and then cut the mated blocks. I would have far more waste. Again beautiful turning Thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much Todd. I have had that mill for a long time. Actually have 2 of them. The first one I took a JET mill/drill and converted it to CNC. Thanks for watching, Gary
I think all the adjectives have been used and I agree with all of them. Hard for me to add anything new. I do believe this should be a beads of courage bowl. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Gary....outstanding job ...definitely a cookie jar ...or as we call it a biscuit barrel ... my goodness there was a lot of work involved with the dovetails...but totally worth it...great video... take care...All the best.....Andy
I love how you explain everything, If I knew you in real life you would probably throw me out of your workshop as I wouldn't be able to stop asking you questions :) As I was forced to stop work early due to health, I have missed creating things & I have had this little nagging voice in my head telling me to empty out my garage and turn it into a workshop. This might be able to happen in the new year, so I will keep my ears open for all the advice I can grab from your experience.
Thank you and happy you enjoy that I explain what I am doing. I created things out of wood my whole working career as a wood pattern maker and loved it. After I retired I continue making things in my home shop which I have had for almost 50 years. It has expended a lot since then though. I hope you are able clear out a spot and make yourself a shop. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Take care, Gary
You have amazing talent for super detailed pieces of art! This is so awesome and gorgeous. You are fantastic at putting together pieces of different woods that make masterpieces! Absolutely stunning! Bravo!
Gary, Just came across this, and I am stunned. This is truly a magnificent piece. I really like the segmented projects, and look forward to my own first one. While watching this, I couldn't help think about ways to make this bowl with every segment having a dovetail on both sides. I don't have a CNC machine like you do, but I think I might be able to do it with just my router table. I hope so anyway. Thanks for showing us all how. I really appreciate it.
Thank you Mark and it can be done with a router and some holding jigs for sure. To do it with a dovetail on each end the pieces would need to be held on the same angle as the joint. But that would just be a matter of making a fixture to hold each piece. Now I think I should work on making one. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you very much Dennis..If I put cookies in it I will have to stand guard. One to keep it safe from dings and the other so I get all the cookies..lol Take care, Gary
Gary, yo just blow me away with your segmented turnings. You seem to have so many segmented ideas you make my head spin. The precision of all those little pieces, jointed so beautifully, Made possible by your skill in building all of your sleds for the precision cutting of your pieces. This particular segmented piece is out of this world & the finish is totally sublime. These pieces show all the mastery of skills just as you display in your natural turnings. Brilliant my friend, Don
Thank you Donald! These are so different than natural turnings because most of the time I have control of what the shape is going to be. Which I also really like because what I did for a living I had to end up with exactly what was on the drawing. That is one reason I love natural turnings as I have the freedom to let it be what it will. I just made something that will help me with another segmented job that I will be starting soon once I decide which woods to use. Take care, Gary
The tedium woodworking requires is clearly exhibited in this wonderful puzzle pieces bowl! Ah, the hearts of true artists... 😊😁 Thanks for the example and the reminder. Love the work. Really appreciate the art form!
Merci beaucoup et j'apprécie que vous regardiez. Bonne chance dans vos aventures de tournage sur bois. C'est quelque chose que vous aimerez et il n'y a pas de fin à ce que vous pouvez faire. Prends soin de toi, Gary
Thank you very much Don for those kind words. There is one waiting for next Friday. It will be much different than this one but it is very special. And my wife loves it and is using it for something she loves. You will see next week. Take care, Gary
Thank you very much Harry. I really like the wipe on poly for a finish like this. Right now i am using Polycrylic on something. I think it will be a nice finish as well. Thanks for watching. Gary
Thank you very much Gord. I have gotten a lot of use out of both of them. The first one was built from a Mill/Drill. I installed balls screws and servo motors. I also built the electronic controller box. The one I used in this video is an older Bridgeport mill that I upgraded the electronics in as well. I am really thinking of selling the smaller one. It would make room for a drum sander. Thanks for watching. Gary
Thank you Valerie! Cookies are good!!! I have made molds for making cookies for weddings that had the couples face made right in them...so I could make a mold for shaping dovetail cookies. They could be 2 part made with dark and light dough and you could take them apart to eat them. Hmm...now you have me thinking.
ThePapa1947 Let me know if you need an official taste tester!!! The dark side would have to be chocolate with walnuts and/or walnut flavoring, of course!
I don't know what I like more, Gary. The tight fitting joints, the design of the piece, the lid and knob or the finish. Each step was well explained and illustrated, too, making for a great video. You remain the master of segmented turning! Just another beautiful piece we have come to expect from you. Great job, keep'em coming! Phil
Thank you so much Phil for all those wonderful words. I truly appreciate them. This was lots of fun for me to do. Although I was just not sure if I wanted a feature ring of dovetails or the whole thing. Glad I went with all of it being dovetails. Next weeks is going to be a bit shaggy looking compared to this but it has a real special meaning to us. You will see and understand I am sure. Thanks again and take care my friend, Gary
Thank You Gary...Very fancy, very intricate...Glad you described each step, so easy to get lost in the process..That is a beauty indeed and the polishing past works very well...TM
That is a very unique and incredible lidded bowl, Gary. I have a jig that was sold by the guys who used to do the PBS show "Router Workshop" years ago that could do much the same. I have thought about getting it out and using it but never got around to it. Now, I don't have to!!! LOL. Really enjoyed this video, Gary! Stay healthy, my friend!! .....Gord
Thank you Gord I am happy you liked it. Well since you have that jig it seems you should put it to work..lol Although I have a dovetail jig I made 40 years ago for the roll top desk I made. But the CNC does all that work for me now. Happy turning, Gary
Thank you very much. I am using that same fixture which has been modified again to hold a very odd shaped piece. Lots of strange fitting joints. Take care, Gary
I'm envious of the level of precision in your work, and the patience that takes to pull this off. I saw that you made the lid's knob (and whole pieces in other projects) out of black locust. I'd heard that this species fluoresces under UV light, so I just harvested some to see. If you haven't already tried it, the wood glows with a vibrant yellow light, very similar to the color of yellow highlighting markers.
Thank you very much Kevin I appreciate your comments. When I first got the Black Locust from a tree a 1/4 mile from us I was not sure it was Black Locust and not Honey Locust. I learned then it would glow under a black light so I tried it. Yes indeed it does glow. I did some video of it and was going to include it in a bowl I turned back then but changed my mind. I should do that the next time I turn some. Thanks for watching. Take care, Gary
I am very impressed 'Gary'that you are always segmented by the new angel, very beautiful dove tail bowl and lidded is so pretty cool. Thanks for sharing I am very happy to see this video. Take care my friend
Gary, I believe this is possibly one of the best bowls I’ve seen you make. That walnut is something else for grain & finish. Just fabulous my man! Thank you for sharing & please be safe out there.😷
Thank you Manjit I am happy you liked it. I made a roll top desk 40 years ago and cut my first dovetail joints. I used a router bit and hand carved them for parts of it. They are so interesting looking. I hope your son has lots of fun making them. Take care, Gary
That's really beautiful and really unique, Gary. Again, the lid just gives it that added touch. I really like your jigs and fixtures for cutting pieces, too. Stay well. Bill
Thank you very much Bill. After it was glued together I was not even thinking of a lid. But the dovetail joints by their self was not going to be enough. I normally do not plan on lids but for sure it needed it. Glad you like the jigs and fixtures. I have made another on something I am working on right now. Take care, Gary
Hi Gary, I saw the Thumbnail and thought I can't wait until Sunday. This bowl just takes segmenting to a different level. Beautiful Gary. My wife Jane agrees with me as well. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw

Thank you Judith and I have a number of videos using Black Locust. Just finished on as a matter of fact and will probably do another one soon. Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful work Gary. At times our creative genius coupled with boredom can really cause lots of work lol, but the finished products are a joy to watch evolve.
You are absolutely correct on that Jim. It did cause a lot of work. I did divide that over a month's time so that helped..lol Thanks for watching and take care, Gary
Thank you Michael and you are right. A great finish starts long before the finish is applied and then each coat has to be prepared for the next. I will say that wipe on poly is one of the easier ones to use to get this. Take care, Gary
🐼 Big Bear Hugs from a 67 yr old grandma in Kirby, Texas, USA 🐼..
Thank you Grammy Bear!
You made me a cookie jar!! ;) So. Pretty. :D
Thank you Nan, you never know. It should become someone's cookie jar rather than sit on a shelf.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow! A cookie jar with tons of strength with all those dove tails. Outstanding!!
Thank you but there has not been any cookies in it yet. But if they do they sure will not be able to escape!
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I was cleaning my shop a bit today, creating a home for the drum sander and just watched this video. Now I know what to do with small pieces. I'll have to do the dovetails on my router table (No CNC), but I should be able to devise a jig. New challenge! Nice piece! Josh
Thank you Josh and you will love having a drum sander. As soon as I can make room I will have one as well.
Thanks for watching,

Man O Man!! I really love this. You've out done yourself this time.

Thank you very much Gord. I have gotten a lot of use out of both of them. The first one was built from a Mill/Drill. I installed balls screws and servo motors. I also built the electronic controller box.

Well since you have that jig it seems you should put it to work..lol
Although I have a dovetail jig I made 40 years ago for the roll top desk I made.
But the CNC does all that work for me now.
Happy turning,
Gary
Excellent job Gary.
I like the small parts holder. Great idea.
Thanks for sharing your ideas and skills with us.

Thank you very much. I am using that same fixture which has been modified again to hold a very odd shaped piece.
Lots of strange fitting joints.

Thank you Manjit I am happy you liked it. I made a roll top desk 40 years ago and cut my first dovetail joints. I used a router bit and hand carved them for parts of it. They are so interesting looking. I hope your son has lots of fun making them.

Thank you Huw I thought you might be interested! I did a dovetail bowl that basically looked as thought it was holding a maple side to a walnut side. I wanted something a bit different here. I did that one years ago so no video on it.
I will send you a picture if I can find one.

Beautiful work Gary. At times our creative genius coupled with boredom can really cause lots of work lol, but the finished products are a joy to watch evolve.
You are absolutely correct on that Jim. It did cause a lot of work. I did divide that over a month's time so that helped..lol
Thanks for watching and take care,
Gary
Wonderful project. Taking the time gives a great finish.
Thank you Michael and you are right. A great finish starts long before the finish is applied and then each coat has to be prepared for the next. I will say that wipe on poly is one of the easier ones to use to get this.
