Time to put Black Locust & Honey Locust on the Map for its uniqueness & beauty…….I recently saw a beautiful Black Locust Burl video on UA-cam ❤
Black Locust is a pretty nice wood. The longer it ages the harder it gets.
Gary
I've learned a lot Gary! Thank you!
Thank you very much Norm and thanks for watching,

I have some black locust firewood. I need to go out and see if I have one large enough to cut a piece off. The Black Light is fantastic. Thank you Ron USCG MKC RET
Thanks Ron, yes the Black Locust looks pretty cool under a black light. Thanks for watching and thanks for your service.
Gary
Remember little is usually mighty and in this it sure did come true beautiful bowl
Thank you so much Dennis! The other thing is little does not take up as much space. I have some rather large turnings that are hard to find a place to put them.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

I just followed a link from the Wood Database that shows how to identify woods by using a black light. Pretty cool.
It is very interesting for sure.
thanks for watching,
Gary

Gary
Gorgeous bowl, Gary...I have a Black Locust tree in my yard that is at least 100 years old. I'm waiting for it to fall apart, so I can turn it into bowls!
Thank you Carol, I was lucking with this one. A few years ago I saw that less than 1/4 mile from us someone cut the tree down. I had to go ask what they were going to do. They mentioned giving it away for firewood so I was able to get a few loads for turning.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you, sharing your details (speed, gouge choice, finishes used, ...) helps a lot. Your process is relaxed and practiced.
Thank you very much Lee I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank You Gary....That Black Locust was free of cracks! Very nice...It's also sooo nice when we are able to organize our shops for efficiency & not have to move equipment/stuff around just to complete a project. TM
Thank you TM, yes this one was pretty crack free. Most of what I got has been.
Yes I like what I have now and am getting ready to start a new video and you will see some of what I did at the begining.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice work and turning tips
Thank you very much Maurice and thanks for watching,
Gary
So cool still haven't turned a piece of Black locust yet. That trick with the blacklight just might make me look even harder. I have locust here on my property but I don't cut live trees. Happy turning my friend 😊
Thank you Edward,, happy you liked the trick. I heard about it when I first got some Black Locust and was not sure if it was Black or Honey Locust.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 where I live here in central Pa Locust was used for fence posts. I still have a couple of them that border my property and as the wise man that you are you know why. Locust is pretty rot resistant.
Furthermore, your videos are very helpful to me! I am looking at it with great interest. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Thank you Rob, happy you enjoy them.
Take care,
Gary
Awesome bowl
Thank you Michael and thanks for watching.
Gary
Well, shoot, that just looks like fun! No cracks, no voids, perfectly round! I get why you needed a quick easy turning but that doesn't mean it wasn't fun to do! It was fun to watch, I can tell you that! Great finish on the bowl, too, Gary. Now I want a snack bowl!
Phil
Well Phil it did feel kind of weird without bark flying off and stopping to check for a bad crack. But dang it sure was fun. And actually making something to use felt strange as well.
I guess it might be time to get the Camellia root ball out. Just to look at not turn LOL.
Thanks for watching buddy,
Gary
Very pretty work as usual keep it up
Thank you Lynda I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Yep, when the boss wants their own snack bowl, you have it almost finished. Stay safe!
That is a fact Harry! Keeps me out in the work shop having fun.
Take care,
Gary
So glad you found the remote for the dust collector!
Again, you are amazing! Simple yet elegant!
Thank you Mary. Remotes have a way of just hiding on me LOL.
If you are anything like myself,I usually put things in a safe place, and forget where that safe place is LOL
Thank you Tom, oh yes I have lots of safe places I put things. Sure going to be fun when I find everything LOL.
Take care,
Gary
That is a very pretty little bowl! I do love the grain on that wood! I hope your beautiful wife enjoys her snack bowl!
Thank you Julee and yes she really likes it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Always appreciated.
Thank you Scott and I always appreciate you watching.
Take care,
Gary
Love the little bowl. The grain is awesome plus it is neat how it shows green when putting it under a black light. At least the wife has a nice snack bowl.
Thank you Annette, yes she loves it.
Take care,
Gary
That was a gorgeous bowl for your wife. That’s for sharing!
Thank you Mark, she really likes it a lot.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Superb as always.
Thanks so much Grace and thanks for watching.
Gary
That last shot makes this bowl look like the Incredible Hulk's snack bowl. Were those Gamma ray coming from that light? LOL!!
Thank you Gil, I wont tell my wife that it looks like the Hulks bowl LOL. Thanks for watching,
Gary
I rally like it. Great job.
Thank you Rex I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Beautiful piece, Gary! I fell in love with black locust back when I was just turning pens. But I didn't know it would glow under a black light!
Thank you Billy, I forgot who mentioned it to me way back. But it sure does. I wish I would have had a better black light but it seemed to work.
Thanks so much for watching,
Gary
You make that look so easy, and it is anything but easy! I appreciated you sharing the speed you were running the lathe at various points as that is something I'm still getting a feel for as a new turner. Great looking bowl and thanks for the video.
Thank you Jon! I realize that many wonder at what speed they should be turning. You will catch on to it the more you turn. If you think surface feet of material passing by your cutting tool that will help. If turning the inside of a bowl and working toward the center you will it is not cutting as good as it was out toward the wall.
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice! Thank you 🙏
Thank you Craig and thanks for watching,
Gary
Great job.
Thank you Cal and thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, I've been wanting to add a lathe to my "retirement" woodshop. Your videos have helped in that decision. Your commentary and instruction are very concise and informative. You do beautiful turnings and I've learned much from your videos. Thanks for sharing your skills with all of us!
Thank you very much for your comments. A lathe is a great addition to a workshop. There are endless things you can make on it and I like doing them all.
Looking forward to hearing more about it.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful love it
Thank you Adrian, happy you like it.
Gary
Phil from Shady Acres dropped your name... I can see why he likes you.
Thank you very much. Happy you stopped by and happy you enjoyed the video.
Phil is a great guy and if you go back to a video on New Sanders he did in Oct. 2020 you will see us together. On a trip my wife and I took we stopped by for a visit.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Fantastic snack bowl! I had no idea about black locust and a black light very cool.
Thank you Lindsey, when I first heard about the trick I knew we had a black light around somewhere and sure enough we did. It did not put out much so I bought a light bulb that had the black light elements in it and that worked pretty good.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice job. I am in the same boat with my shop. My pops is moving to a small place and he keeps giving me tools which is great but I am loosing track on where anything is. Anyway the bowl looks great! Thx for sharing
Well I try to give my son's tools but they do not want to end up like me with no place to put them LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and experience. I learned a lot!
Thank you Kelly I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching,
Gary
Wonderful bowl Gary, the finishes used are well explained.
Phil’s tenon removal process works a real treat, however we’ve used it down under for ages.
Nice commentary keep up the videos.
Great trick with the UV light
Thank you Greg, Yes it is very interesting what a black light will do to some woods.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely piece Gary. Great practical advice throughout. From a frosty Scottish start to the day, take care.
Thank you very much Kevin.
Take care from a bit foggy morning here in Oregon.
Gary
Beautiful bowl. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thank you Brad and thanks for watching,

Gary
Beautiful bowl.
Thank you Nathan and thanks for watching.
Gary
Beautiful.
Thank you Khan!
Great video and bowl. Lovely item.
Geographically You must be close to Phil Anderson, going by your voice. I’m a follower of his ( Yours too now ) and being English your accents are a treat.
Tones of the Great Burl Ives.
Well thank you Stephen, yes Phil lives in the state above the one I live in. Not all that far and on a trip in our motor home last year we stopped by for a visit.
I had to laugh as we never thought that we had accents LOL. But all across the USA we seem to have different accents. I experienced that when I was in the army in the mid 1960's.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful little bowl. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Gary
That was the most informative video on bowl making I’ve seen to date. Very well done.
Thank you
Thank you very much Tom. Is this something you would like to see more of?
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Another beauty Gary, with lovely grain patterns and of course a lovely finish, the black light certainly makes it look different but there is nothing like the natural grain look, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al, for sure the grain is wonderful. Looking at it under a black light is interesting but it does not show off the wood nearly as well as natural light does.
Take care,
Gary
Lovely bowl, lovely tutorial. Thank you!
Thank you Peter for your comments and thanks for watching,
Gary
My gosh, it is such a beautiful piece of wood & expertly turned, of course, with a beautiful finish too Gary. Thanks for sharing this one & thank your wife too for letting you. Don from South Aust.
Thanks Don, it was lots of fun to make and my wife loves it so it was a big win for me.
Take care,
Gary
That is beautiful wood! Love the bowl, perfect for snacks!
Thank you Sandra! And it is working great for snacks.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I love black Locust made couple bowls myself. Beautiful wood grain . Thanks for the Video
Thank you Brian, I do love the wood as well. I took a lot and now wish I had taken all of it. It makes a great end grain turning but can be difficult to do.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice bowl, love the grain. Really cool black light trick. Phil Anderson tribute was nice too.
Thank you Michael! Yes I was a bit sad when I saw it did not get recorded just because I had mentioned Phil after the nub came off so nicely. So I had to at least add it in at the end.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Glad to see you using black locust. It's a very beautiful, under appreciated wood. That is definitely good for more than just fence posts ( although it's great for that too).
Thank you
A number of years ago someone cut the tree down about a 1/4 mile from us. I had to stop and ask about it. I should have taken more but I did get a bunch and have some left.
I did not know at the time that it was used for fence post but I can see why.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great bowl. Glad you found the remote.
You and me both. And luke always it was the last place I looked...plus I wasn't even looking for it LOL
Thanks!
Gary
Beautiful little bowl, Gary. your wife will loves it Thanks for sharing Dave
Thank you Dave, yes she does love it. Thanks for watching.
Gary
I be been watching your videos for two years now. I’ve finally gotten a lathe and I’m so excited to start turning. Thanks for your very informative videos. I know I’ll be less nervous turning than I would have been if I didn’t get some good info from them.
Thank you Robert and congrats on the lathe.
I am sure you will really enjoy using it.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful grain. Nice little snack bowl.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching.
Gary
Pretty little bowl with beautiful grain. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Thank you Mary. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice, Gary! Thanks for the lesson! Cheers, Pete
Thank you Pete and thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice. It's great to see projects like this for those of us with smaller lathes. Thanks!
Thank you Dustin! That makes a lot of sense. I know some of the bigger pieces will not fit and can be a bit overwhelming so I will try to do smaller ones as well. Plus it is really hard to find a place to put a 17 inch bowl.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
What a special glow with the black light😎. Never seen before.
I like this simple snack bowl. This type of bowl is always very handy to have around.
Well done Gary.
👌Frank.
Thank you Frank, it was sure a lot of fun to make and the fact my wife really loves it is great as well.
Take care,
Gary
Thank you Gary!
Thank you Norm and thanks for watching.
Gary
Thanks for the videos, I've lear ex a lot from you.😊
Thanks so much Charles and thanks for watching,
Gary
Excellent
Thank you very much!
Well now, a black light is on my Santa list. She was wondering what to get.😃
Kind of fun as other woods do similar under a black light. I bought a black light bulb at Home depot but I think it could have been a been stronger.
Nice job
Thank you Vern!
You’re right, wood grain is fantastic 👍👍
Thank you Jim, hard to go wrong with grain like this.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Great job, Gary. Your wife has a beautiful snack bowl.
Thank you Crystal, she really likes it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful work.
Thank you very much! I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Love that grain! Outstanding video and outstanding lathe work. Thank you sir!
Thank you Ed for your comments and thanks for watching.
Gary
Appreciate so much your pure honesty about wood finish products. I rarely accept anyone who does paid promotions. Just my natural reaction. But the fact you say good things about products you like and use personally goes a long way with me. Thank you!
Thank you Abe, I have a number of products that I like to use. If I find something I do not like I just move on.
Happy you enjoyed the video.
Gary
New subscriber here. I really enjoy your relaxed style, it makes your explanations and tips more comprehensible. The snack bowl creation was beautiful!
I’ve always been interested in turning bowls, etc., just never taken the first step. For now I’ll continue watching, learning, and dreaming.
Thanks for sharing your art.
Thank you very much Sly! Keep watching and then when you feel like it perhaps you will get a lathe and give it a try.
There are so many types of turnings to choose from and I enjoy doing them all.
Thanks again for watching, subscribing and commenting.
Gary
Love the bowl and grain. I have a chunk of locust I have been saving. It's even more beautiful turned than what I was guessing. Going to have to get a blank cut and spinning.
Thank you Larry, Black Locust is a very pretty wood with amazing grain. I love the contrast of the colors in it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow who needs glow in the dark pigments! That is fantastic
Gary. What a sweet little bowl.
Thank you Jane, the black light I used did not seem to have much power but it did make it glow.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Thank you Grammy Bear!!!
That turned out great! Love the markings in the wood...awesome 😁👍❤
Thank you Heather! That was nature at it's best for sure.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice.. I love Black Locust . Thanks
Thank you very much. I think Black Locust has some of the nicer grain.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl!! Still yet to get my hands on a chunk of this wood but I'm excited for when it happens! Thanks for sharing 😁
Thank you so much. We have a bit of Locust around here. They took down a huge Honey Locust tree behind us. Not happy with what they are doing there so I did not even want to ask for any of the wood.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, I really enjoy the information you provided. I come from a long line of wood turners dating back into the late 40’s and 50’s . I worked in my uncles woodturning shop for years learning the trade. Most of his production was spindle type work and furniture manufacturing components. I have been intrigued with you information on star and you 3D effects glue up for segments. Will try and catch more of your videos. Look forward to seeing them. Thank you
Thank you very much Robert. Must have been a fun job working in your uncles shop. I worked as a wood patternmaker and really enjoyed my job. There was plenty of turning but some of the other things were very challenging and I really loved that.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very pretty wood. The grain is awesome. Great bowl
Thank you very much Jean and thanks for watching,
Gary
She’s a beauty Gary! Thanks
Thank you Russ! I am happy with how it turned out.
Take care,
Gary
Great little bowl. Love how black locust finishes and that it will glow under black light. Makes it pretty special.
Thank you Doug! I do like Black Locust a lot. It looks really nice in an end grain turning but boy is it hard. I did a droop bowl out of it and it looks amazing done in end grain.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Mr. Gary you are awesome and the bowl is beautiful.
Thanks so much Donald. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful bowl Gary. Appreciate you taking time from your very busy schedule to share with us. Well done my friend 👏. Joseph
Thank you Joseph and not sure why I make it busy. Sheesh you would think after almost 10 years of being retired I would have some spare time LOL.
Take care,
Gary
